The History of the Vorlons (Babylon 5)

  • When in the presence of other races, Vorlons often wear encounter suits. As such, few people have ever seen what a Vorlon actually looks like. Since Vorlons are capable of surviving in an oxygen atmosphere, the suits are used entirely to hide their appearance. Apart from allowing them to hide their appearance, encounter suits allow Vorlons to navigate the environment more easily, interact with others, and conduct business as necessary.

      And Kosh was absolutely right. mentally we were not ready for immortality, we were not evolved enough plus that immortality came of the cost of two lives for every one that would become immortal. he knew that the culling and chaos that would be caused by this, would lead to an ultimate shadow victory. something he could not allow.

    • @michaelhviper
      @michaelhviper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking of that very moment. Yes, they weren't ready for immortality because they are too young and the price they would have to pay: taking lives to achieve it. Really gives you a parent feel to it.

    Kosh was considerably older than 1000 years. If you remember Sheridan's first meeting with Lorien he said "Did you know you have a Vorlon inside you? Well a piece of one anyways...."
    Sheridan responds "Kosh?"
    Lorien answers "Is that it's name. I think I met it once; a long time ago."
    Kosh is often mentioned as being thought of as insane by his own people for having no problem spending extended time around humans and other younger races. And the $64000 question is.... Ever wonder what might have made Kosh that way? Possbily his meeting with Lorien?

    A couple of inaccuracies:
    While the Shadows did start attacking openly after a time, they didn't employ their Deathclouds until the Vorlons unleashed their Planet Killers.
    Also, while the Shadows believed that they were going to crush the Vorlons and their allies at Corianna-6, the encounter was orchestrated by Sheridan in order to force the Vorlons and Shadows into a direct confrontation, giving Sheridan the chance to open a dialogue with both of them using Lorien as a mediator.

    • @pcuimac
      @pcuimac 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It was a good move by JMS to show that the "army of the light" was a propaganda lie by the Vorlons. There was no good vs evil scheme here. Both sides, Vorlons & Shadows had become stuck in their ways and an evil to the younger races. They had them fight about whos ideology is right. In the end it would have wiped out everyone in the Galaxy, maybe even Shadows and Vorlons.

    • @stevenmorton2059
      @stevenmorton2059 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@pcuimac Despite their bickering and the near disaster that resulted, the Vorlons and Shadows actually succeeded in achieving their original goal. The younger races gained the wherewithal to realize what was happening and to stand on their own. That and some gentle prodding by Lorien sent the message that their job was finished and it was time to go.

    I remember fondly this storyline and the reveal. It set the bar really high for my expectations of storytelling in science fiction. The only thing that came close in recent memory is The Expanse.
    To me Babylon 5 is kinda like the opposite of cosmic horror. Whereas Lovecraft makes us cower in terror of how puny we are in the face of celestial beings, Babylon 5´s greater races inspires us to explore and evolve into better versions of ourself.

    • @robwalsh9843
      @robwalsh9843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Also, in cosmic horror advanced and ancient beings are usually indifferent to the existence of mortals. The Shadows and the Vorlons have a vested interest in the younger races. They view them as their kids in a weird way.

      As per th-cam.com/video/IOOoiQwSd5I/w-d-xo.html
      I would say Kosh is a single collective consciousness of a millions years history that "already happened".
      In that video we can clearly see that vorlon are just human of the future ending or at the end of the cycle of time then jumping in the past.
      The timelie of Babylone 5 is a fixed timeline with many time travel that somehow can't be change at all, this is great in the theory that everything already all happen at once and history is only replaying itself over and over.
      I believe we could also say Kosh is a single spirit sharing multiple "body suit" which contain only a fragment of the collective, as in the understanding that each eye have it's own angle of perception and timeline.

He was young by the standards of his people and would have a hard time convincing others of the mistake. Kosh was old even by Vorlon standards. He was well over a million years old. He was an oddball in the sense that he actually gave a crap about the younger races and didn't see them as expendable (to a Vorlon, younger races have such short lives that it doesn't matter if they die 'old' or 'young' as it's all the same to them).

    The cause of the Vorlon/Shadow war was never explained. At first they had rules of engagement and agreed to respect the others position, but then something changed and each side thought they were in the right. For my money the Vorlons began genetically tinkering with Younger Races to encourage their development in orderly fashion. The Shadows objected, they believed in free evolution and chaos. They skirmished and argued for centuries. But then the Vorlons decided to adjust younger races to perceive them as godly figures. That was too far, the Shadows took it as a declaration of war and sent their agents among the races the Vorlons had changed, subverting the Vorlons work and using their technology to foster chaos. The Vorlons were enraged by the flagrant breach of the rules and fought back. This way both races thought they were the one under attack, that the enemy fired first and convinced them that they were the righteous ones.

    I have trouble accepting the idea that the Vorlons had some form of collective consciousness, largely because I think that if they had, they would have realized that the humans of Babylon 5 had killed the Vorlon sent to replace Kosh, whose name, I understand, was Uklish. If nothing else, they would have noticed Uklish's absence from that collecting consciousness.
    I also thought that the Shadows did not start using their "Death Cloud" until after the Vorlons started using their planet killing ships.

    • @OmegaOrdained

    I feel like they had 20 different writers on this.
    In the beginning Kosh could only be visited by entering a gas-filled chamber. Later he roamed around the ship with no issues ("wearing a protective suit" which he wore in the chamber too). Then they explained the need for the suit with him being a known entity, no mention of the chamber again. Then we was revealed to be an angel (which reminded me about a cross over of Stargate and Superman. Powerful being known by many cultures around the galaxy but doing everything to hide that and "blend in"). In one clip he was shown to have tentacles or something that came out of his suit. Not an issue in true/angel form and never comes up again.
    What also isn't really explained is their absolute need for a mindreader which they apparently use to dump their brain into. Super weird.

    I believe when the replacement for Cosh arrives at B5, this replacement refers to itself as Cosh; so they may be a collective of carbon copies of one another or have a give mind. This is similar to the alien species in the movie Puppet Masters, where when interigated and asked how many of them there are; the alien says one. So, this species has no concept of individuality.
