  • This review looks at the new NVIDIA RTX 2060 Founders Edition card vs. RTX 2070, GTX 1070, 960, Vega 56, and more.

Reviewing the RTX 2060 Founders Edition card takes aim primarily at gaming benchmarks, with particular effort dedicated to thermals, overclocking, power, and noise. The overclocking results are the most interesting, considering how they interact with RTX 2070 positioning, and are worth a close look when considering buying the RTX 2060 vs. RTX 2070. Vega 56 also gets testing, of course, and represents the more enthusiast OC style.
As for thermals, power, and noise, the RTX 2060 undergoes this testing with the Founders Edition cooler and reference PCB, which is the same as a reference RTX 2070 PCB except with fewer memory modules.

Nvidia has officially killed the mid range. $350-$400 for cut down, bottom of the barrel 106 class silicon. I don't care that it matches 1070 Ti/1080, the 1060 BEAT the 980 in many games at the normal (X)X60 class price category (and had 50% more VRAM to boot). Nvidia has consistently been increasing prices while simultaneously moving lower quality GPU dies/silicon into higher card tiers (e.g. 2070 now uses 106 class GPU die vs 104 of previous generations).

Navi needs to be a winner for AMD. Everybody was kind of hoping that the Vega64 would be much closer to GTX1080TI than it actually did. AMD needs a GPU that is at least an improved over the GTX1080TI. Mining saved AMD big time..
They need at least an RTX2080 comparable GPU. If they would price it at the $750, it is still a lot cheaper than the RTX2080 and at the same time it allows AMD to finally make some profit in order to boost their R&D..

@@2Fast4Mellow This is what happens when there is no competition in the market. Nvidia had no real competition for most pricing brackets or literally any competition in this "new tech" that's basically just throwing dedicated muscle at a problem until it's not so bad. They bumped everything up a pricing bracket to match their lastgen performance-counterparts, and there is nothing AMD can do to really compete until Navi. The only competition Nvidia has right now is practicality in the sense that you don't need any of these new cards for much of anything really unless you want an antialiasing prototype that situationally looks and performs better.
I also don't think Navi is going to reach the 1080TI. If anything I suspect we'll probably see 2070 performance for 1070 prices, the way it should be. Maybe if we're lucky we'll get 2080 performance for 1080 prices, but I'm highly skeptical AMD would push Navi into that sector of the market when Vega2 is becoming a thing.

Idk if this site is good, but here are some comparisons. www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=4051&gid2=3957&compare=geforce-rtx-2060-6gb-vs-radeon-rx-vega-64-air-xt-8gb Considering the hbm2, and the cryptocurrency vega craze. Nope we ain't there yet.
given that the RTX series is on a smaller node, we should be expecting the gains from that half node shrink and any frequency and architectural improvements.
We went from 1280 to 1920 cuda cores but over twice the die size on a smaller node due to the 2060 being a cut down 2070.
Physics has nothing to do with it as it's more than feasible for them to have fitted 1920 cores on a much smaller die that would have been only slightly larger than a GP106 (200mm). Interestingly there's little to no frequency gain but there is a 50% cuda core gain that is corresponding to the performance increase.
Node shrink = more cores (that's physics), it's purely the decision of management that has caused this.

For example, I just played the RE2 Remake demo at 4k/60 and it only really dropped below 60 in a cutscene with heavy DOF usage. I had almost no GPU headroom, though. If I was on a 2060 I'd be dropping below 60 FPS consistently. 2070 also has extra ray tracing headroom thanks to a minor increase in rt cores and tensor cores.

People who are complaining about the GTX 2060 being priced at $350 are seriously daft. The VAST majority of gamers out there according to many statistics play their games up to 1080p resolutions. Look up on store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey under display resolution. 1080p and below amounts to a total of 91% of gamers out there. And probably 90% of those play on monitors that are standard 60Hz. 1080p 60FPS IS STILL THE STANDARD for gaming.
And here we're talking about bloody 4K performance, where the GTX 2060 is able to consistently deliver playable framerates of over 40FPS, up to 60FPS! At maximum details! For 1080p max details, a GTX 1060 will average out at over 100FPS in Sniper Elite, for crying out loud! A GTX 1060 is capable of flat out 1080p 60FPS on every AAA game out there (with some tweaking of details here and there). THAT is the mid range for 91% of the gamers out there and the 1060 delivers in spades.
GTX 2060 is already in a premium mid range league here, delivering 50% more performance. For the same 50% or so of extra cash. How is that a problem? Those 3.9% that play games at 2K according to Seam will also get a bloody good value out of the GTX 2060 at $350. What is your point with these complaints?

The problem with GTA V is that the soft framecap makes testing artificial. I guess a 2060 is low tier enough where you might be curious about 1440p and/or 4K performance but otherwise you're likely to be jacking up AA and/or supersampling to keep the framerate under 150 or whatever the limit is.

So about July 2018 the general consensus was that you should buy a used 1080Ti for about $500ish (after the bitcoin crash folks claimed the cards were flooding the market).... I found that price point *REALLY* optimistic and managed to procure two EVGA 1080ti FTW for right at $700 (incl s/h) (They both appeared to have been nearly new, no dust, no dings, pristine box. everything included. even the ad-in papers and stickers were uncreased)..... I thought: "Well I might have paid a premium but at least it is quite a bit less than $1100-1300 that the 2080Ti is going for"
Six months later and I now count myself not just lucky but VERY fortunate to have spent the money to ensure that I am set for the next three years at least as these things run perfectly for 1440p ultra settings on EVERYTHING. SC2, Witcher 3 and every single other game including my old Command & Conquer games run with zero issues at 80+ frames and about 55C - 59C temps even in furmark and stress tests.
I checked and 1080Ti cards now go for $1000+ and 2080Ti are listed at $1300 .... HOW is it that this makes the tiniest bit of sense?
Just count me tickled pink to have dodged this graphics card generations bullet.

@@Alecxace I am glad I'm not alone in noticing this, my laptop uses an Intel CPU paired with a Nvidia Quadro GPU and even my laptop at 1080p output to the same monitor looks 'Lacking' when compared with the AMD GPUs I have used such as the R7 370, HD7000 series and HD6950, at the same resolution output settings and game settings, it's really shady, cutting back on video quality in order to gain more performance doesn't make your GPU or the technology it's based on superior to previous iterations/competitors technology, I want uncompressed 1080p video output from my GPU, not compressed or pixel binned resolutions or compressed colour profiles, Nvidia needs to be more honest about how exactly it makes gains in GPU performance and provide more details to inform customers about exactly what they are buying, I wonder if HDR in-turn effects Nvidia GPUs more than AMD GPUs, unless Nvidia also does heavy compression of colour and pixels with HDR formats too.....

I've noticed this since the HD2xxx and HD4xxx. It's the reason why design studios go with radeons and why macs use radeons. Our whole graphic design team noticed it even while in desktop. Biggest change though is from Intel to Radeon. Since then we'll use even the lowest end Radeon card like a 4350 or a 3450 which is enough for non-3D graphic design.
For me geforce picture quality looks like a washed out unsharp non-native-resolution jpeg compared to Radeon's PQ. To most people, they won't notice it especially with crappier monitors.
I personally started noticing it since I used Radeon since the 9600 Pro model and noticed the shift in clarity and color when I had to borrow a 7300GT since I sold my Radeon card and I haven't gotten my new card yet.

I didn't expect it... even at 1080p, I didn't expect it. I thought it was going to be another dumpster fire. On another review I think they even said it could meet 60fps, on low RTX, at 1440p? I'd didn't see that option here... But anyway, So: great one-size fits all, below the luxury/high-tier. Look forward to future titles developed from square 1, with RTX in mind. @The Perfectionist Just lower texture off the uncompressed ultra setting and it stays over 60 FPS with everything else maxed. Soon with DLSS it will do 1440p 60 FPS.
