How to Calibrate ASR Traction Control on a Vespa GTS

  • Steps are:
    1. Turn on the scooter and ride forward a few feet
    2. Wait for about 5 seconds before holding the front brake, ASR button, and electric start button simultaneously. The ASR indicator will begin to flash slowly on the dashboard.
    3. Accelerate to a steady 18-20mph and hold it there until the ASR indicator turns off. Throttle control is important here. If this process fails, you were likely not steady enough at maintaining the right speed.
    4. Once the ASR indicator turns off, turn off the scooter and pull over to wait 30 seconds (minimum). Count 35-60 seconds just to be safe so you can do this in one try.
    5. After the time has elapsed, turn the scooter on and start it up. You'll see the ASR light is slowly flashing. When you begin to ride, it will disappear. This means your ASR traction control is calibrated.
    If you would like to turn off traction control you can do so on the switch. If you see ASR on the dashboard solid, traction control is turned off/disabled. Use this for spirited riding, or if you are on an uneven surface like gravel, dirt, etc, so that the scooter will respond to your throttle inputs. Otherwise, you might as well leave ASR on in case you get into a sketchy situation on the street. It might keep you upright in an emergency. Be safe out there.

    My 2022 somehow lost calibration.

    No need to hold the front brake, at least according to the owners manual on my 2020 300 GTS HPE Super Tech. I have reset mine without holding the brake and it works fine. That said, thank you for all of your great videos.

    Great info. Had my Vespa at local dealer they had no idea what to do with it. Quick question can you do that proces on the center stand ?

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cannot do it on the stand. The wheels need to be rolling so the ABS sensors are engaged. Good luck.

    Hello, great video!! I have a 2020 GTS Supertech and suddenly I can no longer turn ASR off. I was always able to start up and then hold in ASR button to deactivate the ASR which is indicated by ASR lit up solid. My tire pressure is good, I tried to calibrate the ASR system but I can’t because I can’t turn off ASR at all. I wonder if my ASR button is faulty. Any suggestions?? Thanks

    An explanation of what ASR is would be nice

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Traction control. Basically two sensors trying to keep both wheels rotating at the same speed. If one gets out of sync it will ignore the throttle until they’re back in sync.

    Hi, guys
    Lance here. I miss PDX, so thanks, Andy, for the little tour of the shop environs. I bought my 2017 GTS300is Super from you. I have a new rear tire, but my scoot does not have an ASR button to push, so how do I do the reset?

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  ปีที่แล้ว

      ASR on the pre-ASR switch models will be part of the start button.

    Just bought my GTS Super Sport 125, ‘22 model, and it has ASR OFF on the dashboard all the time. ASR button does nothing. Decided that it probably wasn’t calibrated. But when I’m holding and pressing as shown in the video nothing happens. Would appreciate any help. Thanks and keep up the good work. Love your videos.

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  ปีที่แล้ว

      We don’t have the 125 GTS in our market but I’d imagine the process is basically the same. Make sure to roll forward a few feet before you try the process. Other than that… your local shop is going to know the most about that specific model. Sorry to not be of much help!

      Hello, did you solve the problem?

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@svcicek Took it to the mechanics and he spent like half an hour trying to set it up to work normally. And he mentioned later on that he had another Vespa 125 that didn't have ASR activated and working from the get-go. I don't remember but I think he asked for directions to set it up from Italian Vespa service.
      Now it works, but I don't really use it. But was annoyed by the ASR OFF constantly on the dashboard.

    Tried doing what is instructed in the video. As my scoot is running not smooth with ASR on. Dealer said ASR should be always turn off but i dont believe that. What happened was the ASR started blinker as per vid and then I ride around 20kph but ASR doesn’t goes off then the check engine lit up. What would the problem?
    -bike still running the same condition but ASR is always appear on cluster and check engine

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can always see ASR on the dashboard it is not calibrated. If it is calibrated properly it will turn off (disappear from the dash) as soon as you hit the throttle. Maybe take it to the dealer and have them re-calibrate and plug into the pads diagnostic system to see if there is something else going on. Check engine light is often a notification that ASR is not set properly. And of course keep up on making sure your tire pressure is correct before and after calibration. When your PSI drops, the weight of your wheel changes and it will mess with the ASR’s calibration and cause that not smooth acceleration when you throttle from a dead stop. Good luck.

    My ABS light is constantly on and ASR flashing ..it does not ride over 3k revs so in limp mode. I have to press the ASR Button and get the Light to go static ...then rides fine. I've had diagnostics done and had the rear sensor changed ...this went back to normal for 3 miles with no fault ..then back to fault again. I noticed initially the ABS wanted to kick in by the lever rumbling then going solid rock hard for the rear brake but with these lights on Not anymore. The main dealer checked and both sensors are working . I've spaced the sensor to the ABS ring as per the manual after this. Tried calibrating as per the video over 10 times. Dealer is refusing to look at it anymore " cannot help you " so I'm reaching out to the world for help !! Any suggestions greatly appreciated

    Me again
    My vespa gts turn off after riding a couple of blocks, leaving the dashboard on without any warning light? It's 2014, does anyone know what it could be?

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stalling out, huh? Could be a clogged fuel injector if it has been sitting for awhile. Could also be bad gas. For that just keep running it until the clog clears. Battery terminals may be loose. Spark plug cap may be loose. If your bike has been sitting in the rain for a long time you may have corrosion on the kill switch which could cause the bike to stall. For that one just turn the kill switch on and off like 40 times to break up the corrosion.
      Those are the basic things to check. Beyond that, hit up your local shop. Good luck.

    • @VespaPortland
      @VespaPortland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joe! Not calibrating the traction control may cause your check engine light to illuminate which can make you think something is wrong with the scooter. It’s also a feature that can keep you upright on a slick road so unless you’re a spirited rider who would rather not have the bike attempt to keep you up, you might as well calibrate it. You’d know it’s not done if the ASR light is on solid when you ride. Take care!
