VW Beetle Convertible Replacement Power Window regulator cables too short - how to fix it!

  • I noticed I wasn't alone when it seemed like my replacement power window regulator cables were too short for my 2008 VW Beetle. After reading a few things on the internet, some people said the trimmed the metal cable housing to get them to fit. I will show what I did to make it work for me. Also, after I made the video I realized I put the regulator on backwards...I'm going to reverse that. Make sure you keep track of where everything goes before you take it apart!

Fantastic! I replaced the driver's side rear window regulator today on a 2009 convertible and made use of your tip to cut down the length of the coiled steel sleeve. I started with 6 coils and ended up taking 9 off all together to get a good fit. Great tip.

Just got to do my first one on a 2007 convertible. We have a Euro parts place here that usually specializes in VW parts. My boss and I literally ended up breaking the new repair kit. Thought ok we messed up. Routed the second one and same thing. Followed the tip here and it works. Only helpful video I've seen so far, thanks.

Thanks ody - Wasn't sure what to do. 1st set I ordered was totally wrong, made for the sedans, not convertibles. This set was close enough. Still working fine right now (knocks on wood). Hopefully it won't go and break now, hahah.

Nice! Glad it helped. Beats paying big bucks to the dealer. Based on what I've read it can be as much as $1000 to fix the power windows on those cars.

@@theworkshop3706 yes it does, sometimes it’s the simple things. I find it amazing how little content for these cars exists compared to my E46.

Great video! I am replacing mine now, not where you bought yours but I needed the right/passenger regulator and they are impossible to find for the convertible, their a few dozen listed for the drivers side.
I had to buy it from ebay, only like 2 sellers

Glad the video helped! I was surprised too at how hard they are to find. At least there are some out there and the job isn't too bad. Good luck!

So I did what u suggested it worked perfect but the problem I am facing is that it doesn't fit when I place it in the Door it seems like the wire crossing is too short

It was a little tight for me when I was trying to get the unit back inside the door. Not sure how much these cars vary between years. Mine is an '08. The window parts for convertibles seem harder to come by than the sedan. You can buy the whole assembled unit for the convertible, but when you can find them they're hundreds of dollars.

Should the free crossing cable be on top of the spool assembly cables? I’d imagine the clip for inner panel support on the free cable should be the one next to it.

How do you fix the cable tension it's the white little box I can't seem to get mine to stay in place thanks and it was a great video

Hi Ron - glad you liked the video. That little white tension box was a pain. If I recall, you have to keep it compressed while routing the wires. I think it comes zipped tied down from the factory, and I cut mine when I was unpacking it. I recall wishing I hadn't cut it because it gets stuck if you allow it to come out all the way and it took a lot of fiddling to make it go back in. I let it pop out more than once -haha. I think it has like a ratchet inside so it can compensate for wear/stretching of the cables over time so it can self adjust. Just get it to compress all the way in, then hold there some how - either with zip ties or a wrap a stiff piece of wire or something to hold it until you're done. Then you can release it and till will take up any slack in the wires. Good luck!
