How to Properly Tint Tail Lights & Side Markers (Vinyl Wrap)

I recently worked on a 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe and a lot has been done to it. In this video, I outline how I use tinted vinyl wrap to tint the side markers and tail lights on this vehicle. All of the tools you will need are in this video and they are also as followed:
- Vinyl Wrap Large Enough for Panel
- Heat Gun
- Very Sharp Knife / X Acto Knife
- 'Lil Chizzler Squeegee
- Soft Foam Squeegee
*Felt Squeegees tend to scratch the surface of the vinyl wrap

Hi Milan, a great trick on separating the adhesive layer from the plastic layer of the tint is to use your teeth and kinda rub the corner back and forth little. Really helps I used to struggle and my friend showed me it. Thanks for the videos I enjoy watching them:)

Kinda wanted to see the taillights done more. I have a G37, and did the tails in a vinyl wrap. But couldn't get the ends to lay/stay down. So i cut the them. I've ordered the new wrap, but nervous as HELL about doing it again! Great job on the video..

Yeah i'd love to! When it gets warmer, I can do a DIY if I get around to wrapping a buddy's roof. In the mean time, you have to remove the roof rails (if you have some on your roof), wash the roof, clay it with a clay bar, dry it COMPLETELY, clean the seals along the windshield because you are going to be tucking the wrap into seal afterwards. Then go ahead and clean the roof with a wax and grease remover to the wrap can properly adhere with nothing interfering. After that its just a matter of wrapping the roof. Take your time, be patient. Buy quality wraps like 3M. If you make a mistake or a bubble, you can lift it back, apply some heat, and you can try again like nothing happened.

Hey! I have a nissan altima 2008 coupe, and I'm wondering how you can paint the rotors & calibers as mine are extremely rusty and look horrible lol. Also, with the tint for the side directional shown in the video, can you do that to a side blinker on a mirror? Thanks so much!

solid info...you did it dry. any problem compared to wet application? seemed very user friendly and could be lifted as needed.i'm only doing 4 flat side markers so like the dry method for small areas. any info appreciated dman
Do you know how to get rid of the little "Hail sized" dings in the body? Have a black Civic and really don't want to have to repaint because of small dents.
What kind of dip did you use on the wheels? Grey metalizer? Silver metalizer? I'm redoing mine next winter? Nice job btw!

hey dude, i was wondering if you had any suggestions for an exhaust system for my 2013 accord coupe l4, i want to get a Y pipe and mufflers and the tips for it but i don't know what ones to do, do you have any ideas?
Well you can't get a y pipe as the i4's have a single collector pipe. So you can get a new down pipe from RV6, what I have on my car, and change that up. I would recommend maybe a magna flow exhaust system and make it a dual exhaust. If I could do it again, I would go dual for sure.

what kind of film do you use? some people are saying that using a window tint to your tail/headlight are not the greatest compared to vinyl tint. let ke know what you think. thanks
there is alotta condensation on the headlight as well btw. but i think u saw that.

I'm thinking of doing this. There are companies out there that sell pre-cut film but cost a lot more than just buying a roll and doing it yourself. Do you know brand of film and shade percentage you used on the side markers? Where did you get the film?

Can you just use any window tint to tint the lights or do you have to use a special kind of tint specifically for tail lights ?
Can you link me to the tint you used on the side markers. I can't find the right percent tint that darkens it so you can still see orange but not too much.
I noticed you had after market headlights. what brand are they? I noticed condensation inside one of them.

Hey i have 2006 g35 coupe tailights..they have the sunk in tailights..you think you can make a tutorial on tinting those headlights specifically, cause they different than the ones used here..i failed twice already :/

Hey that looks really good. Did you know that the side markers on the G35 snap off really easily? Not sure if that would make applying the tint easier. Also the wheels look amazing. What exact colour and make of dip did you use? Do you get your dip from dipyourcar.com or somewhere else? thanks!
Wrapping something off the car, I find, is only easier if you are wrapping a large part (tail lights, headlights, etc.) but if you're doing, for example, side markers, window trim or emblems, I like doing it on the car.
The wheels are Matte Black PlastiDip with 2 coats of metalizer. I put down 5 coats of matte black, let it dry, and came back to put 2 coats of silver metalizer overtop. I picked up the dip at HomeDepot as it was actually cheaper there than from dipyourcar.com

that's a suede squeegee not foam. however there is a sponge in between the suede and teflon.

+tududecarfreako Absolutely. The wraps have come a long ways and are very durable. As long as you go with a reputable brand, like 3M, you can't go wrong with wrapping your roof :)
What percent tint is the lighter one? Would look really good on my Accord tail lights!
The light tint I showed is a 50% tint and the dark tint is 25%

+Natural Bro TV Unfortunately I dont but most bumpers all come off the same way. Tabs from the rear wheel inner liner that needs to be removed, clips under the trunk, and any wiring for the licence plate light need to be removed.

I would get some tint, wrap the roof, and maybe paint the brake callipers the same colour as the body.

Yeah if you have tinted windows, I find that a glossy black roof looks GORGEOUS if you have body lines that will accent the tint
Hey man what brand plasti dip did you use? It looks really good. I just got a G35 and my wheels are in bad shape.
Regular Black PlastiDip. I then used a silver metalizer overtop the black once it dried.

Do we absolutely need the heat gun to do this? I want to do this to my car but I don't have a heat gun.
+Rated MsT It makes like a lot easier. If you don't have a heat gun, you can use a hair dryer or something else that makes heat. If you have access to it, use it because it makes the vinyl want to stretch and conform.

I have a question, why do some people spray the adhesive with soapy water? Does it work better? Have you tried doing it that way? Thanks :)
FXloaphy The only reason why they do that is so the film will be able to slide once you apply it to the panel. The only time it sticks is when you use the squeegee and push the soapy solution out from under it.

It seemed harder to use when i tried the soapy water.... it wouldn't stick at all :c maybve it was just cheap tint with shitty adhesive
Hey just a question.. where to find tinted vinyl? Its easy to find tint film but am assuming what you using is not a film but some kind of vinyl that is easier to remove in comparison to tint film?

paint from 2:44 looks different to 7:20, its only the glue or is for the heat?
jahmarko The bumper was repainted using spray cans and it wasn't baked to cure the paint. This meant that the clear coat wasn't bonded to the base coat, which is what you see in the 7:20 shot. The clear coat peeled up when I took off the excess wrap around the side marker.

I tried to tint my side markers but it keeps peeling up what could be causing this, I made sure it was clean and cleaned it with alcohol
+karnsaini if its 100% clean then the area might be rough, try a little sanding with water, if that didnt work then remove the side markers off the car, wrap them and put them back on.

I couldn't tell you. The best way to do it is to measure your tail lights, and get 1 extra foot. So if your tails are 3 feet wide, get at least 4 feet per tail light to get it done.

+Lumison Jean They will still project but just keep in mind that the output is going to be diminished because it has to go through a tinted medium. For headlights, I suggest not tinting them, but blacking out the interior housing

How did you get the rust off the rotors? Mine are pretty rusty. Also my front left has a huge gash on one of the spokes from the previous owner and a bunch of curb rash. Should i just plasti dip over it?
For the rotors, I used a drill with a wire wheel and ground all of the rust off, then painted them so the rust wouldn't come back. For your wheels, I would plastidip it a matte colour or even a metallic. If you go with a matte black for example, it will hide the gouges and scratches very well.
im thinking about silver or the color you used on the infinity and then put gloss on it so its metallic. Thanks man
PolskieBMW I really love the look of the silver metalizer over a black base. I think its one of the nicest finishes for wheels

I used VHT caliper paint in Real Red to get that bright red behind the wheel. :)

milanmastracci One could always tint the inside of an element with tint foil or tint spray, but is there any way to prolong the life of elements tinted using the method that you show in the video? Maybe applying layers of clear plastic over the tint foil or spraying the element with some kind of clear base/finish?

Easy way to separate the tint from the other piece of plastic is use two pieces of tape and pull apart. Literally come off.

They are bare metal so they rust if not driven, drive it around hit the brakes, boom clean rotors.

Not a problem!! :) It'll probably up within a month. I have a friend's Charger that needs some wheels dipped, and while I take the wheels off, I'll fix the rust on the rotors.

If you can take them out, it might make it easier for cleaning. However when you're installing the film on the side marker, its nice to have it in place and not move.
