I bought 1 Mandavilla & 4 Dipladenias for my Mom & Dad. My Mom had radiation through Gamma Ray in the first week in March. Her grown kids made her get up daily & come outside & every day she would sit outside by her gorgeous flowers, smile, drink tea or water, & eat. From now on, Mandevilla's & Dipladenia's make me smile & have a new meaning! They are super beautiful! Thank you!!! :)
I just rescued two big clumps of what MAY be dipladinias from the dump. They are inside a greenhouse recovering from being cold and dry. Your video looks very helpful so thanks!

In my experience, I've found these plants to be absolute troopers! I bought some last year and they did wonderfully. But when I brought mine inside for the winter, life got in the way and I sort of neglected them, but amazingly they kept on going! Even w/o my attention, in a rather cold and dark house all winter long, it managed to hold. (Granted it didn't look the best). So I nursed my first two back to health and was so impressed by their longevity and rather easy care, I bought two more today. GREAT plants for people who want a tropical touch but don't want something too care intensive.
That's very similar to my experience with them. I tend to just leave them alone when they're indoors without much warmth and light. They bounce back so quickly it seems easier than trying to keep them growing steadily all winter.
I love them, buy some every year. I always hope to keep them over winter by bringing them inside on my windowsill just keeping soil damp, not a lot of watering, I am in UK. We only have the centra heating on when it's really cold, not all day, every day. The same thing happens every winter, leaves turn yellow and nearly all drop off.? Some survive until spring but not all. Help please
Live in Southern California . Easiest plant I have ever owned, and I think I have tried every plant . I do get bored and replace if the plant doesn’t product flowers . This plants grow flowers 11 months for last 20 years in the same small to Large pots . In December, some leaves may drop and plant rest for a bit . Come March they r making a show! My favorite plant .
I love mandevilla! They are my favorite plant. I live in MA, so I over winter them in my sun room. I've had the same two plants for 4 years and this past winter, I got a seed pod!!!! Those babies are growing right now! So far 10 of the 36 I planted!
Thank you for all your information about the Mandevillas. I live in Alberta in a zone 3-4 and today (Aug 14) bought three plants that were marked down to $1.94 CDN. They were very dry and I am giving the roots a good soaking overnight. I am going to repot them tomorrow and keep them in the garden for another month. I am hoping to overwinter them in a south window but I may have to purchase a grow light. Keep your fingers crossed for me, and happy gardening!
I’m in Ontario zone 5a. Just took my 2 dipladenias outside. They’ve been over wintered 3 times. Other than having to cut them back in the fall and trimming their very long vines a couple of times during the winter they put up with neglect and grow back every summer. A very rewarding plant!
They are beautiful!! I have a red mandavilla and was gifted a dipladenia that has not flowered yet, they both receive full sun until about 3 in the afternoon. They both have beautiful green leaves so that a plus. Thank you sharing, take care.
Pink, pink and more pink. I think I might want to try this this year. I’m kind of anxious to get home and see what’s going on in my northern garden, but then again I’ll miss seeing my daughter. Last week it got sooooo hot and humid down here, well actually it was the beginning of this week, anyway I was ready to go home right then. Wait a day or two and I just about froze by butt off this morning. Fickle weather. I may go out to do some weeding today, but then I’ll want to go home again and do my own weeding. I KNOW it’s much colder up there, highs only in the 50’s, but that’s when I like to be outside the most and get the heavier work done, mulching to be exact. I’m just getting into tropical gardening. I live in zone 9b, right at the cusp of 10a in Florida. I’ve always tried to grow things here that have a more cottage vibe, like hydrangeas and lavender and such which doesn’t do well in the subtropics. I’m finally giving in and trying to learn to embrace the tropical vibe. Your love for a tropical garden is helping me do that. I’ve never even heard of these flowers you’re showing, but I really like the vining one. I may get one of these and see how it goes. At my last house I had some tropical trees/plants because it’s what the gardener I hired suggested. The cana flowers started growing out of control, I thought they were weeds and I pulled them out and threw them away all the time. Their roots grow so crazy underground couldn’t get rid of them, they even grew under the fence and into my neighbors yard. I had no idea people went out of their way to get these things! I have a lot to learn. You even have me liking canas now. 😊 I’m moving into a new house this week. They yard is littered with unkept palm trees, bamboo, about 8 angel trumpets, bleeding hearts, dragon fruit and of course things I don’t recognize that’s probably great, too. I can’t wait to turn it into a little tropical paradise. The front of the house is Spanish inspired, complete with arches and a built in trellis across the front. I’ve been thinking bougainvillea, but this trailing plant you’re showing here, hmmmm 🤔
Sounds like you're living in my dream garden! I know the grass is always greener, luckily cannas take a very long time to spread when grown this far north. There are a few plants I grow that I know are considered pesty plants down in florida, like bananas and palms that seed everywhere like washintonias and queen palms. Sounds like you have been busy and that garden is probably just gorgeous!

Hi Jeff! I absolutely love the Mandevilla family of plants. I do notice that my Dipladenia are prone to fungal diseases (black and brown spots on the leaves) as well. I will generally spray with a copper fungicide in late winter or early spring as new growth is emerging and this helps to keep the disease under control. Great video as always! 😀

Using my mandevilla plants in my dead tree. In making a hummingbird sanctuary with feeders also I supplement with banana peels to bring in small fruit flies, etc. and also put hummingbird feeders. I’ve seen some videos where they have hundreds of hummingbirds in their backyard so far I just have two!😊
I live in Canada and I purchased my Mandevilla vine for inside my apartment. I have a tetrastigma that has latched onto my blinds and now the Mandevilla has sent out at least 10 vines in one place and about the same in the other. It's amazing how it makes its own ropes by wrapping itself around itself 😂it makes itself stronger and is sending it out like 2 ft out into the airspace to latch onto the tetra. Amazing to watch. My apartment is warm and moist, very tropical all I need is birds now🤗.Happy growing.💐💐❤️💐💐❤️
This year is my first time ever getting to have my own balcony with my own plants and when we moved in, in January, the pink mandevillas were one of the first plants i bought and it was mainly for the hummingbirds. I've totally fallen in love w the beauty of these flowers and recently we went out and got a trellis to see how we can grow the vines. It's exciting to see whats to come with these flowering plants. I will say that I've had a bit of trouble with aphids and i think it might have some to do with the fact that my apt complex has lots n lots of plants and flowers around and most are infected w those yucky aphids i noticed. Not entirely sure. But i do manage to get rid of the aphids quickly w a little bit of neem oil. Also, thanks for sharing the diff between dips and mandevillas. I had no idea lol Right now im trying to grow more from the cuttings of my mandevilla. We shall see!! Thanks for the good info!! God bless
In zone 8b, I wintered over my dipladenia in the house. It lost a few leaves , I would take it outside whenever it was warm and let it get sunshine as much as possible during the winter. And it survived. Our winters can be mild. But we do have a few frosts and freezes. Just bring the plant into the house and treat it like a baby and it should survive.
Thank you for the great video very informative! I am new to Mandeville I bought my first one at Costco in May in zone 6 Missouri. I decided to put it in a little bit bigger pot and to put the pot itself halfway into the ground where I wanted to plant it to climb up my Stone and wood pillar on my front porch. The plan is just to pick up the pot before the first Frost at the end of fall early winter this year and keep it in my basement and then put it back out in the spring. I have seen leaf drop and so far today it is June 13th and there aren't any buds or blooms yet 😢. I'm not sure what I need to do to get this beautiful plant to bloom! I used regular gardening soil in the pot as well as put some perlite in the soil I also used Espoma brand BioTone to fertilize when I first potted. It gets full sun morning and afternoon. Do you have any tips? Thanks!
I just bought 6 of these from Home Depot. Thank you for the great information. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma with hot hot summers. I am going to put a few in the ground in half-day sun. I think that I’ll put the other 3 in containers so I can easily move them if the sun is too intense for them and then bring them in for the winter because we do get frosts and freezes. I fell in love with the beautiful pink flowers. I hope they do well. A new plant for me!!! 😊

I grabbed one from Lowes after work. Thanks for the tips. I have a plant light that I use on my Calla Lily and 🍋 tree from seed. This mandevilla has flowers that are white with orange center. Its actually leaning toward the plant light. It is Vining so I need to get a few more stakes. Thanks for the tips❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
For me all reds!! One instance with mealy bug..after that a blessed spring n summer till AUG. Then came the baked leaves from harsh temps. Moving them to back patio and morning sun..so far so good . Zone 9b gives me time to get them ready for winter inside . They can enjoy our no- fall, fall ..and a prune back for when they come inside.
Glad I found you. For the life of me I could not remember the name for a dipladenia. I could swear I knew different generic name for dipladenia. Now I can look for that. Glad you mentioned the rootstem at the surface. I think maybe I should give it some support
SO GLAD YOU MADE THIS!!! I have had my Mandevilla (smaller pink flowers) about a year, just playing "figure it out", as there isn't much out there other than vague care instructions. I had mealy bugs and spider mites once, but minimal and quick to clear up. Mine has been dropping leaves for a few weeks, after watching this I think I may be over fertilizing it. Also mine needs a cut back BIGTIME. Half of it is just a sad looking vine now lol. I thought the long vines may fill out like a hoya, but guess not! Thank you, once again!
I originally bought and planted a mandevilla to attract hummingbirds, which sets on my front porch in a very large pot. I’ve never seen a hummingbird at it, but I have fallen in love with this plant. I’m in SW Florida and see hummingbirds around my foxtail palm tree every evening, but they don’t seem to stop at my mandeville or my hummingbird feeder, lol. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

I got a Dipladenia and I absolutely love it! Beautiful consistent red flowers. Today I bought a Monrovia on sale and can’t wait to see what it does! If they’re potted should I bring them in in the winter? I’m scared to lose them if I plant in the ground.

I just bought two Mandeville. I live in Cleveland ohio. As you know. We get several months of cold winters. I wanted to plant them outside and grow them in a trails. I know, I will probely have to dig them up in the fall and pot them before the winter.
I live in NY, and I have had them for several years. Every year a mealy bug gets to them. Every single year. I have already lost a couple of big mandevilla plants due to this bug and because I did not start acting on time. So my advice is to systematically check in your plants and if you see a white residue on the stems - then spray right away with an insecticidal soap.
How would I over winter them durning the winter in MN? Do I need to dig it up? I believe in in zone 3 or 4. Or can bring them in to my RV for the winter? I’ve never had one and they look beautiful!
Love love these, thanks for all the information. I always overwinter my mandevilla and repot it in the spring but it doesnt bloom again until August. Do you think it is my repotting that makes it take so long to bloom? I don't know why this happens. I am in Chicagoland so I only have a few weeks to a month before I need to overwinter the plant again. I've taken to just buying a new one in the spring to get blooms and save the old one for it's foliage! But I would love to get blooms on it sooner.
I'm using mine for the hummingbird and bees and to encourage them to come pollinate my crop plants as well (more on the bees with that one) I got the deep red with yellow in center flowers)
Help. I am in upstate NY. I have a 2 year old Mandavilla in a 10” hanging pot. This will be her 3rd summer. She is indoor in winter with full sun, she has long vines. I want to repot her before putting her outside for summer. Should I cut back the vines when repotting? She flowered and did drop leaves throughout the winter.

This is my 2nd year overwintering my diplodenia. It's ready to roll, vining its ever loving heart out. Im placing it up high on a stump from our crabapple we lost during the heavy snow 🥺 this winter. Deer issue abated as well as looking amazing! Great to see your vid on one of my fave tropicals!
I had three Mandeville plants. I noticed one looked like it lost its leaves. Looking closer, I found the plant had orange caterpillars with black looking hairs. I researched it and found that they are Oleander caterpillars. They are veroucious eaters. They were all over and in the soil too. They mate and there were little babies on the plant too. I got rid of the whole plant and soil too. I live in Central Florida. I had never seen them before. These plants were in their pots for two or three years. The caterpillars turn into black wasp moths with white dots on their wings. I'm trying to decide if I want to try growing these plants again.
J was given a Mandeville not sure what kind. has pink flowers on the container. I grow alot of plant in my yard and this one is in a pot and it's taken off. I have it on a baker rack outside and it's growing vines all over it. But here is my question. I live in Louisiana and we do get frost, so I know I will have to bring it inside. how do I cut it back, how much and when to make it more manageable? And my second question is...My house doesn't get alot of light imside and the one window I can put it in is drafty. Can I put a light on it and give it artificial light? please help. Yes, they're beautiful prolific bloomers but the bugs are all over them. Aphids, spider mites, and mealy bugs ruin my joy of having them but you've made me want to buy them again.
This was a very good, well-organized video. I had trouble with leaves turning yellow, but now I see it was probably I over-watered them. I live in zone 9A, have a lot of humidity, and sometimes we get hurricanes nearby, and it rains torrentially for about a day or 2. What do you advise about that? Also, the sun here is quite hot, mostly June through September, but warm all months except December-February. Will plant the dipladenia near the fence, in partial shade, as the Mandevilla is doing well there. Any advice? Romans 10:9-13

They both were doing great indoors in front of window sitting in water, now maroon one has some circled leaves n couple with spots and yellow one leaves turning yellow and buds have small rotted spots or not developing and falling off...took them out of the house and water and now looks like getting sick... Picked up my Mandevilla at Costco in Michigan. Grows great outside this summer as it’s been hot and humid. Amazing plant. This winter I can bring inside , southern exposure , cut back on watering. But it’s a long winter. Do I have a chance of keeping this thing alive for next spring ?

Lowes or Home Depot they have different sizes they come in a package they are bamboo sticks you put them together like a TP as if were putting up a tent tie the top of them tied the middle and the lower bottom start to guide your Mandevilla as you want it to grow it will fill-in on it’s on good luck

Given that they are often sold interchangeably, it is no wonder people are confused between one and the other. I would say 9 times out of 10, what I see at Lowe's and HD labeled as Dipladenia are either Mandevilla or a hybrid and grow into large vining plants.
I wonder if that’s what is going on with my dipladenia. I expected more of a mounding, bushy look but it keeps growing vertically and now has a long shoot. I put a trellis behind it to see if it would grab onto it but nothing happened.

Sounds like you're living in my dream garden! I know the grass is always greener, luckily cannas take a very long time to spread when grown this far north. There are a few plants I grow that I know are considered pesty plants down in florida, like bananas and palms that seed everywhere like washintonias and queen palms. Sounds like you have been busy and that garden is probably just gorgeous!

Hi Jeff! I absolutely love the Mandevilla family of plants. I do notice that my Dipladenia are prone to fungal diseases (black and brown spots on the leaves) as well. I will generally spray with a copper fungicide in late winter or early spring as new growth is emerging and this helps to keep the disease under control. Great video as always! 😀

Using my mandevilla plants in my dead tree. In making a hummingbird sanctuary with feeders also I supplement with banana peels to bring in small fruit flies, etc. and also put hummingbird feeders. I’ve seen some videos where they have hundreds of hummingbirds in their backyard so far I just have two!😊

I live in Canada and I purchased my Mandevilla vine for inside my apartment. I have a tetrastigma that has latched onto my blinds and now the Mandevilla has sent out at least 10 vines in one place and about the same in the other. It's amazing how it makes its own ropes by wrapping itself around itself 😂it makes itself stronger and is sending it out like 2 ft out into the airspace to latch onto the tetra. Amazing to watch. My apartment is warm and moist, very tropical all I need is birds now🤗.Happy growing.💐💐❤️💐💐❤️
This year is my first time ever getting to have my own balcony with my own plants and when we moved in, in January, the pink mandevillas were one of the first plants i bought and it was mainly for the hummingbirds. I've totally fallen in love w the beauty of these flowers and recently we went out and got a trellis to see how we can grow the vines. It's exciting to see whats to come with these flowering plants. I will say that I've had a bit of trouble with aphids and i think it might have some to do with the fact that my apt complex has lots n lots of plants and flowers around and most are infected w those yucky aphids i noticed. Not entirely sure. But i do manage to get rid of the aphids quickly w a little bit of neem oil. Also, thanks for sharing the diff between dips and mandevillas. I had no idea lol Right now im trying to grow more from the cuttings of my mandevilla. We shall see!! Thanks for the good info!! God bless

In zone 8b, I wintered over my dipladenia in the house. It lost a few leaves , I would take it outside whenever it was warm and let it get sunshine as much as possible during the winter. And it survived. Our winters can be mild. But we do have a few frosts and freezes. Just bring the plant into the house and treat it like a baby and it should survive.
Thank you for the great video very informative! I am new to Mandeville I bought my first one at Costco in May in zone 6 Missouri. I decided to put it in a little bit bigger pot and to put the pot itself halfway into the ground where I wanted to plant it to climb up my Stone and wood pillar on my front porch. The plan is just to pick up the pot before the first Frost at the end of fall early winter this year and keep it in my basement and then put it back out in the spring. I have seen leaf drop and so far today it is June 13th and there aren't any buds or blooms yet 😢. I'm not sure what I need to do to get this beautiful plant to bloom! I used regular gardening soil in the pot as well as put some perlite in the soil I also used Espoma brand BioTone to fertilize when I first potted. It gets full sun morning and afternoon. Do you have any tips? Thanks!
I just bought 6 of these from Home Depot. Thank you for the great information. I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma with hot hot summers. I am going to put a few in the ground in half-day sun. I think that I’ll put the other 3 in containers so I can easily move them if the sun is too intense for them and then bring them in for the winter because we do get frosts and freezes. I fell in love with the beautiful pink flowers. I hope they do well. A new plant for me!!! 😊

I grabbed one from Lowes after work. Thanks for the tips. I have a plant light that I use on my Calla Lily and 🍋 tree from seed. This mandevilla has flowers that are white with orange center. For me all reds!! One instance with mealy bug..after that a blessed spring n summer till AUG. Then came the baked leaves from harsh temps. Moving them to back patio and morning sun..so far so good . Zone 9b gives me time to get them ready for winter inside . They can enjoy our no- fall, fall ..and a prune back for when they come inside.

SO GLAD YOU MADE THIS!!! I have had my Mandevilla (smaller pink flowers) about a year, just playing "figure it out", as there isn't much out there other than vague care instructions. I had mealy bugs and spider mites once, but minimal and quick to clear up. Mine has been dropping leaves for a few weeks, after watching this I think I may be over fertilizing it. Also mine needs a cut back BIGTIME. Half of it is just a sad looking vine now lol. I thought the long vines may fill out like a hoya, but guess not! Thank you, once again!
They are great in that they bounce back so quickly, im sure it will great again in no time!
I originally bought and planted a mandevilla to attract hummingbirds, which sets on my front porch in a very large pot. I’ve never seen a hummingbird at it, but I have fallen in love with this plant. I’m in SW Florida and see hummingbirds around my foxtail palm tree every evening, but they don’t seem to stop at my mandeville or my hummingbird feeder, lol. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

I just bought two Mandeville. I live in Cleveland ohio. As you know. We get several months of cold winters. I wanted to plant them outside and grow them in a trails. I know, I will probely have to dig them up in the fall and pot them before the winter.
I live in NY, and I have had them for several years. Every year a mealy bug gets to them. Every single year. I have already lost a couple of big mandevilla plants due to this bug and because I did not start acting on time. So my advice is to systematically check in your plants and if you see a white residue on the stems - then spray right away with an insecticidal soap.
Are yours in containers? I'm in Central Georgia planting one today, I wanted to put in the ground, but probably won't. Thanks

Hey there, Sharon! Yup, trim away, it's early in the season and it will encourage the plant to flush out nicely.

How would I over winter them durning the winter in MN? Do I need to dig it up? I believe in in zone 3 or 4. Or can bring them in to my RV for the winter? I’ve never had one and they look beautiful!
Love love these, thanks for all the information. I always overwinter my mandevilla and repot it in the spring but it doesnt bloom again until August. Do you think it is my repotting that makes it take so long to bloom? I don't know why this happens. I am in Chicagoland so I only have a few weeks to a month before I need to overwinter the plant again. I've taken to just buying a new one in the spring to get blooms and save the old one for it's foliage! But I would love to get blooms on it sooner.
Since I live in a somewhat dry climate but can get extremely hot so I repotted my new Mandevilla into a self watering pot to keep up with the moisture
I'm using mine for the hummingbird and bees and to encourage them to come pollinate my crop plants as well (more on the bees with that one) I got the deep red with yellow in center flowers)

Help. I am in upstate NY. I have a 2 year old Mandavilla in a 10” hanging pot. This will be her 3rd summer. She is indoor in winter with full sun, she has long vines. I want to repot her before putting her outside for summer. Should I cut back the vines when repotting? She flowered and did drop leaves throughout the winter.

This is my 2nd year overwintering my diplodenia. It's ready to roll, vining its ever loving heart out. Im placing it up high on a stump from our crabapple we lost during the heavy snow 🥺 this winter. Deer issue abated as well as looking amazing! Great to see your vid on one of my fave tropicals!

I had three Mandeville plants. I noticed one looked like it lost its leaves. Looking closer, I found the plant had orange caterpillars with black looking hairs. I researched it and found that they are Oleander caterpillars. They are veroucious eaters. They were all over and in the soil too. They mate and there were little babies on the plant too. I got rid of the whole plant and soil too. I live in Central Florida. I had never seen them before. These plants were in their pots for two or three years. The caterpillars turn into black wasp moths with white dots on their wings. I'm trying to decide if I want to try growing these plants again.

J was given a Mandeville not sure what kind. has pink flowers on the container. I grow alot of plant in my yard and this one is in a pot and it's taken off. I have it on a baker rack outside and it's growing vines all over it. But here is my question. I live in Louisiana and we do get frost, so I know I will have to bring it inside. how do I cut it back, how much and when to make it more manageable? And my second question is...My house doesn't get alot of light imside and the one window I can put it in is drafty. Can I put a light on it and give it artificial light? please help.

Yes, they're beautiful prolific bloomers but the bugs are all over them. Aphids, spider mites, and mealy bugs ruin my joy of having them but you've made me want to buy them again.
Oh no! Well if I had those issues, I probably wouldn't be as fond of them. Several people have mentioned insect issues, so maybe I've just been lucky.
This was a very good, well-organized video. I had trouble with leaves turning yellow, but now I see it was probably I over-watered them. I live in zone 9A, have a lot of humidity, and sometimes we get hurricanes nearby, and it rains torrentially for about a day or 2. What do you advise about that? Also, the sun here is quite hot, mostly June through September, but warm all months except December-February. Will plant the dipladenia near the fence, in partial shade, as the Mandevilla is doing well there. Any advice? Romans 10:9-13

Picked up my Mandevilla at Costco in Michigan. Grows great outside this summer as it’s been hot and humid. Amazing plant. This winter I can bring inside , southern exposure , cut back on watering. But it’s a long winter. Do I have a chance of keeping this thing alive for next spring ?

Lowes or Home Depot they have different sizes they come in a package they are bamboo sticks you put them together like a TP as if were putting up a tent tie the top of them tied the middle and the lower bottom start to guide your Mandevilla as you want it to grow it will fill-in on it’s on good luck

Given that they are often sold interchangeably, it is no wonder people are confused between one and the other. I would say 9 times out of 10, what I see at Lowe's and HD labeled as Dipladenia are either Mandevilla or a hybrid and grow into large vining plants.
Yup! Almost every dipladenia I get from big box stores end up vining several feet within a couple of months... so they're not pure dipladenias.
I wonder if that’s what is going on with my dipladenia. I expected more of a mounding, bushy look but it keeps growing vertically and now has a long shoot. I put a trellis behind it to see if it would grab onto it but nothing happened.
