      Thanks Ruth - maybe you could just get a cheap LED light on one? Might be worth the effort. There's little doubt they need high light though. Ed (@Ed's Orchids) has his growing in the house and although it's vining everywhere it has zero blooms. It plenty on it when I gave it to him so the lack of light seems to me to be the guilty party.

      Crikey that's a fair old amount! It's similar to Anthurium waraqueanum over here. I'm obsessed with getting one but they're several hundred pounds even for a small one - yet in the states I've seen them for around $60. Maybe they don't travel well...

    My fave plant. I buy a few every year because I haven't managed to keep them in doors over winter I n the Midlands. Great advice here, think I may have watered when I shouldn't have. Leaves always turn yellow and drop

    Hi! I have had my madevilla for a year now. I brought it indoors near a south facing window. It seems to have done alright. I am getting ready to bring it outside. Is there anything I should know about doing that.
    Thanks for your wonderful teaching about taking care of this plant.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so pleased you enjoyed it, Mary. It seems the extra light in your south facing window has worked well getting it through winter. These are high light plants so wherever you put it outside, make sure it's in the warmest, brightest place, sheltered from winds. If you get very hot sun, then sheltering just the pot will prevent it from getting too stressed. Good luck!

    Thank you for your clear good advice. I bought a Mandevilla this summer and I am trying to winter it inside over winter. I have it sitting under a small grow light. I am wondering if the light should be directed towards the bottom of the plant or at the top on the leaves? Thank you.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. Definitely direct the light to the leaves. These are high light plants and providing it’s got the temperatures and the light there’s no reason why it won’t just keep blooming. Mine usually keeps going for at least ten months of the year - and that’s in a a greenhouse.

  • @grannyplants1764

    Hey Geoff I brought my white mandevillia inside for the winter, it’s sitting in front of a north window in the apt building’s community room and doing well. Lucky me, I can bring in bigger plants and keep them down there, instead of in my 1 BR apt. But it’s doing well with lots of neglect, and blooms on and off. It will go back out in about 6 weeks. Once I get that display case I can probably have more room, and bring it up to apt and care properly for it this fall, and train it around the window. Do you have white or pink ones in the U.K.? Be well 🌱😊

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it's doing well for you. I've seen both white and pink but always seem to be sold out - at least, the online sellers do. I think supply isn't all that great and it seems few people want to try them indoors, which is a shame.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 geez here ( in Central NJ) in May the big box stores have tons of them, usually red and white, good size plants on a trellis. They’re not that expensive either. Sigh. I'm curious..I live in CT and I bring my tropical in. Well my mandevilla obviously is dropping leaves but I'm finding some leaves with brown from stem to center of leaf and tips of vine brown as well. Any ideas?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've just Googled your weather - so if you're getting frosts then your Mandevilla will get dead leaves and stems and eventually it'll die entirely. These are tropical plants and won't survive frosts. Some hybrids can go close to zero Celcius, but any species would prefer to be closer to a minimum of around 15°C. Hope that helps.

    If you are using a peat based medium like I see you are , What I'm saying is that peat consumes all the calcium from the medium. Maybe that's why you are getting yellow leaves?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually that's an editing error on my part. I showed a clip from another video where I put up on screen to use John Innes no. 3 - a video from over 2 years ago - when in actual fact I'm using peat free composts these days. So although the original plant pot no doubt had peat in it, the repot was mostly coir with a bit of Miracle Grow peat-free multipurpose compost in it. I'm sure you're correct in that can be a cause of yellow leaves, but they also do yellow naturally on an annual basis. Providing there's new growth then it isn't a concern - but if not, then perhaps peat might be one of the possible issues - as you say.

    • @Joey-vw1id
      @Joey-vw1id 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I just thought I would let you know because I was using peat based mediums and I noticed that my plants were deficient in calcium so I replaced all the medium with a non peat based medium and I've had no problems since.
      Happy growing!💚🌱

    Hello! I have a big problem with fungus gnats in my house plants. I don't know what to do. Ive read in places that a mixture of 1 part washing up liquid and two parts water can get rid of them. I am just worried about killing some of my younger plants I've raised my self from seed with this method. Do you have any ideas? Thank you! 😊😊😊👍👍🥺🥺🥺

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are loads of fungus gnats remedies if you do a google search - many of them free - like the one you've suggested. Washing up liquid won't do your plants any damage. Another option is Mosquito Bits - you can get from Amazon - in your watering can. The yellow sticky traps are useful for sticking in pots to catch the adults, or buy some Drosera or Pinguicula plants. In my case, I don't mind a few knocking about as my plants are not in the house, but recently I've watered on some chemicals to reduce numbers as well as using the other remedies I've suggested. Good luck!

      Just as a follow-up to this - I'm about to use Neem oil in my watering can and sprayer to reduce my own fungus gnats problem. I seem to be seeing the adults a lot around orchids, which is odd as they're not supposed to like the open media much, but I'm going to treat them nevertheless. Another option is put some hydrogen peroxide (3%) into your water. Fingers crossed for us both!

      Truth is, I really don’t know. Sometimes plants die. Maybe it was weaker in the roots, maybe it caught some disease. But if your others of the same variety survived at least you can be confident your care was sound.
