  • In today's video, we try to answer the question 'WHY YOUR DIPLADENIA (MANDEVILLA) IS DYING'. I cover several other common questions like, 'What's the difference between Mandevilla and Dipladenia' and of course, some of its cultural needs like watering, humidity, temperatures, propagation, along with where it comes from and why its names are so confusing.
    I hope you enjoy this video all about Mandevilla Sanderi (just throwing another name in there to confuse you!).

    Hi - thanks for this very informative video! I have, perhaps, a 'new' name for this plant...I bought it from a local (UK) supermarket and it was labelled as "Outdoor Mandevilla: Hardy Climber"!!!! Of course, when I got home and did some research, I discovered it was anything BUT 'hardy'. I did think about taking it back for a refund, but I liked the flowers so much, decided to keep it. Now, I am firstly admitting to the heinous crime of over-watering, which I am now trying to be more aware of. I transplanted it to a large outdoor pot (I don't have a conservatory, nor a greenhouse) and placed it in dappled sunlight. It's still blooming beautifully. However, some of the flower stems appear to be rotting (below the actual flower bud, so the bud droops down) AND I have one or two leaves with a large patch of white (from the edge...some type of mould/fungus?). Do you have any ideas for me?

      Thanks Trish - I appreciate those kind words! This an 'old' video in TH-cam terms so I've lived with and grown this plant for a lot longer since I made the video. The difficulty of providing 'care requirements' of course is that plants can respond very differently in different climatic situations. Additionally, this plant is now heavily hybridized which muddies the water greatly - as they may well have produced a more hardy variety. Maturity of the plant also matters, as does length of time spent at low temps - which is why these sellers get away with such claims I guess. Mine is the species so my care is tailored to that which the species is used to. I find that individual blooms don't last long - only a couple of days - before they drop off by themselves - although I very often beat them to it and deadhead as soon as I notice a petal wilting. So far I haven't experienced any white marks - sounds like possibly mildew? I'd get in close to rule out mealy bug or some other pest, then spray with a general purpose fungicide. You can of course, try pruning it out if it's only in one spot, as during spring and summer they take well to some pruning. In relation to 'overwatering' you may want to watch a very recent video I made about that topic with Mandevilla you can find here: th-cam.com/video/tl0Zabd3GhQ/w-d-xo.html
      It's a series of 3, but explains how I now think about that topic and how I stopped my plant from losing loads of leaves this spring and coaxed it back to full health again. Good luck with yours and I'd love to hear how you get on.

    RHS has it listed as Mandevilla(syn. Dipladenia) and a climber and that is good enough for me. As far as I have been able to ascertain the only bush forms are in cultivation not in the wild. The flowers are beautiful no matter what you call the plant.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's actual name should be Mandevilla sanderi as you say, since the genus was changed (back in 1933 I believe!) but in horticulture they've stuck with Dipladenia. I agree, it makes little difference to the plant - it's just time-wasting having to write several names. I'd love to get my hands on some of the other colours.

      So far I haven't personally come across any issues regarding pests and diseases with my Mandevilla plants, but a quick Google shows they are out there. Unfortunately diseases invariably manifest themselves as leaf spots (couldn't find anything on bloom spots!). If I were you I would first of all inspect it very closely for pests, then if you've ruled them out I would spray it with a fungicide. I would also remove any blooms so it's not wasting energy on them, and prune it back by a third. Good luck and I hope it revives up for you.

    I live in Sydney, Australia and I've had Mandevillas outside for many years. The temperature drops during the winter occasionally down to around 4 Celsius degrees and they survive at these temperatures.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it can very much depend on the maturity of the plant, the light it’s getting, the time spent at the lower temperatures and the humidity - all play a role. And I haven’t exhausted all factors there. Different hybrids also have different tolerances. My pot grown plant with low light levels through winter isn’t happy even below around 10. People just have to experiment with their own. This is a very old video - I have much more up to date ones on mandevilla - as I’ve learned more.

    I have a weak rio whose leaves are small and light green, instead of dark green (maybe because I overwintered it indoor and the growth was during winter without enough sunlight). The stems are weak and easy to bend over. It is early summer, if I trim the rio back pretty hard, can it survive and grow new shoots, even from roots, and come back to normal?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree the weak growth sounds like a lighting issue. Spring is the right time to prune, although when it's growing strongly I've heard you can prune them any time. Recommendations are for only about a third off. I would worry somewhat at a severe prune right back to the base. It may well re-grow if it's now in better growing conditions, but personally I would hedge my bets - take some cuttings for insurance (they root fairly easily), then only prune out the worst, weakest growth. Then if you subsequently get any strong new growth from lower down, you can finish the job. Hope that helps!

      I grow mandevilla in my house by a radiator in a 30cm terracotta pot and periodically wind the out of control stems around a moss poll and also I bury them in the soil where they ‘root and shoot’. As a bonus the horizontal leaf nodes send out extra shoots and create a bushier plant. This way it’s never really out of control.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Zanna, I sympathise totally. I'm not claiming to have all the answers with them. It's just a case of close monitoring and continually trying to replicate their natural habitat which of course is tricky when it's planted in a pot. They have a large fleshy 'tap root' full of starch which usually means they've evolved to make it through a period of drought. Although equally you read plenty of 'care tips' on the web recommending to keep them moist! Specific micro-climates relating to our own grow space is so crucial and can change the care dramatically. For me, in my environment, I've found that unless I make the media well-drained, the water will hang around and then cause leaf yellowing. I've only just published an updated video on mine which you may find useful, as I've lived with it for another year since making the video you watched. It also appears to be related to your issue. I hope it helps. Here's the direct link: th-cam.com/video/tl0Zabd3GhQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always difficult to say with watering as it so much depends on your environment. They're supposedly 'drought tolerant' and have several adaptations for that, including a large starchy tap root. My environment is highly humid and most cool so based on the size of my plant, I've found it gets by on once per week watering in mid summer - much less in winter. If it was sitting in the baking sun all day it would need more.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      Thank you Sarah those kind comments actually mean a lot. This was one of the very first TH-cam videos I made and it's not exactly polished. Most people are kind but several have been under the false assumption that from the title, I would somehow miraculously know what the specific problem was with their own plant. I only ever meant to give a detailed description of their care requirements. Anyway, I'm really glad to hear your plant is doing well for you. Mandevilla are a little temperamental in that a perfectly healthy-looking plant can very suddenly, without warning take a turn for the worse and die. It's happened to me twice now, for no apparent reason. They all get the same care, but it could be something as simple as a slight difference in aspect or temperature. But when it's happy - it certainly does reward you with one of the longest blooming periods I've ever come across in the plant world! Take a few cuttings as insurance.😃

You can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/5vzcXLerVjI/w-d-xo.html But you can tell if yours is still alive by gently scraping the outer layer of bark away further down a stem. If it reveals green then relax, it'll come back to you. If not, then try as low down as you can. Thanks - although this is an old video - I've got plenty of more up to date ones on Mandevilla (and dare I say it, more interesting to watch!). My red Mandevilla sanderi also wilts in the petals before falling - although I tend to snip them off before they get the chance. There are many hybrids of this plant which I'm guessing your yellow one is - so it's likely the hybridization process has produced a slightly different characteristic - as you're describing. For example, people are fond of telling me that there's a 'hanging basket' variety and a 'bush' variety that don't climb. These are both hybrids and have been specifically altered to have these characteristics - they don't exist in the species form. ALL species forms have twining shoots and a vining characteristic. So if your plant otherwise looks healthy there's probably nothing to worry about. Hope that helps.

      If you think they're falling off too soon because of some cultural issue, then you'll need to check all the factors. For example, what temperature is it going down to? Are there any yellowing leaves? Where do you keep it? Is it getting enough light? How mature is the plant and how long have you had it in its current position? Has it bloomed successfully there before? When did it last have a repot? Is the media right for your conditions? I'm sure I've missed a few. Any (or several) of these factors could be causing the blooms to shut down. I've found with Mandevilla that sometimes it just decides its had enough. I had 3 rooted cuttings that thrived for 18 months, then all of a sudden, despite them all being in the exact same pot, 1 just died for no apparent reason I could fathom.🤷‍♂️ Give me a bit more information and we'll see if we can narrow it down.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Thanks again for responding. Here is what I know. The plant is new to me. It’s in a 6inch pot. Yellow is not so popular so I was excited to get this one. When I got it, it was looking healthy and had lots of buds. The buds started opening up the next day I got it. I’ve lost about 6 flowers so far. The flower opens up and looks lovely and fall off within a day or 2. The leaves look green and fresh. I only noticed a few yellow ones today. (May 26). I keep it on the porch where it gets direct sunlight in the afternoons. Temperature is about 28-30 degrees Celsius. The media looks fast draining and airy. Just to clarify the naming after a bit more research: 'Dipladenia' was reclassified into the 'Mandevilla' genus back in 1933! So Dipladenia as a genus no longer exists, except growers still use the name regardless, and it's accepted as a synonym. The actual name for this is Mandevilla (syn. Dipladenia) sanderi. Furthermore, there are several hybrids known as either Mandevilla or Dipladenia (incorrectly) that DON'T climb. The climbing characteristic has been bred out of them - ALL the species Mandevilla are climbing plants. No doubt there'll be more to this story in time...

I have a Dipladenia that was purchased last year, did beautifully until it got hit with cold weather & Frost, I live in SC, All my leaves fell off, & now all I have is long vines that have turned brown, Are they dead? Should I cut them back? or will new leaves grow back? I love this plant & the flowers are gorgeous, will this plant start growing back ? I have it growing in a planter, should I be protecting it through out the coldest days of winter? We don't get many of them, but my poor plant suffered this year. HELP!! LOL! I've tried to distill things and avoid the rambling of the older video you just watched 🤣 ! Mandevilla are tropicals and won't take frost. I expect yours is dead. All you can do is prune to a few inches from the base and wait and see - but I wouldn't hold your breath. Some hybrids can go down to 2 or 3 ° Celcius, but never below zero. Mine struggles at 12°C. I bought two plants labeled as Dipladenia in Portugal a few years ago. the red one soon died, the white one limps on. its never grown above about a foot. I've moved it once but am now moving it again as the soil it's in is quite poor, but having watched this it's maybe the cold that's causing it's problems. the last few Portuguese winters have been quite cold on our mountain. I've potted it up in good compost and given it some fertiliser and we'll see if it can be saved.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK so the first thing to point out is that Mandevilla (Dipladenia was retired as a genus in 1933) have been hybridised and several of those hybrids have had the vining characteristic removed. They're created for the pot and basket market. So yours could possibly be one of those. They prefer a rich but well drained media so make sure your mix has some sharp drainage like sand, or stones or perlite etc, and yes, the temperature could be an issue. They're tropical, and although some hybrids will even go down to 2°C - my own much prefers to be at 15°C or above, and anything below that will knock it back. They're high light plants so give it as much light as possible - full sun if it's outside. They're also drought tolerant and don't like to be wet for long so leave it dry for a few days. I recently made an update to this pretty old video you saw which should help you more (I hope!). Good luck - and here's the link: th-cam.com/video/5vzcXLerVjI/w-d-xo.html

      Ok but how high of a temperature can these plants tolerate is my question?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SP-ig3vs To be honest that's something I've not personally experienced in the north if the UK! 🤣 But I can make an educated guess. Mandevilla species are from tropical forests and are climbers, so they're stretching for the sun while having their 'feet' in cooler conditions. I would try to replicate that. If it's in a pot I would shelter the pot somehow. They're also very high light plants, so I wouldn't expect the rest of the plant to be too troubled by the Texas sun. I made a recent and updated video of Mandevilla care here: th-cam.com/video/5vzcXLerVjI/w-d-xo.html

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One correction. If the genus is Mandevilla, dipladenia sanderi cannot be the species name, only sanderi. AFAIK, Dipladenia was a genus used to differentiate between the shorter, non-vining plants (Dipladenia) and the vining plants (Mandevilla). They have since been combined into a single genus, Mandevilla based on genetic analysis, making Dipladenia sanderi a synonym for Mandevilla sanderi.
    Now, the leaves are _supposed to be_ different between the two but, honestly, I can't see a noticeable difference in those being sold as Dipladenia and those as Mandevilla, probably due to hybridization.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Michael. Yes I understand that it's now known as Mandevilla sanderi, but the species _WAS_ known as Dipladenia sanderi initially, and in horticultural circles that name seems to have stuck - just as mine was labelled as such on purchase. (I'm guessing in a similar fashion to how Pelargoniums are still always labelled as Geraniums.) I haven't been able to source any info at all on the vining and non-vining varieties though. Where did you get your info? Not that I doubt you - I'd just like to read it for myself so I can clear up any befuddlement I may still be harbouring! I tried various places, but the much-maligned Wikipedia seems to be the best source, as they're the only ones with rigorous reviewing systems and they name their references - which I've also been through by the way. I'm always looking for something that's 'the last word' on it - if such a thing exists.

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 the species name hasn't changed, it is still sanderi, just the genus has changed from Dipladenia to Mandevilla, so a more correct way of writing it would be Mandevilla (syn. Dipladenia) sanderi. I don't know that there is a "last source" on it. I read an article on it some time ago, so I can't cite it as a source because I honestly don't remember, it was put out by a University and that's the best I can remember.
      Yes, old names stick around because growers are familiar with them and it saves nurseries the trouble of updating their information. I mean, Cattleya purpurata is still sold and called Laelia purpurata even though it hasn't been in Laelia for ~100 years.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a bit more reading, and I know we're getting into semantics here, but I still understand the full species name to include the genus name first. So 'Dipladenia sanderi' still was the full species name - right up until the genus was changed to Mandevilla, upon which that particular species name became 'Mandevilla sanderi'. Or am I still befuddled? (Bet you wish you hadn't started this! 😂 I just want to get it clear in my head - don't want to be putting out duff info out there - not that I'd be the first!)

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 because we're still using the Linnaean classification system, the word your looking for is not species name but scientific name, also known as binomial nomenclature, or in this case it could also be called the botanical name. So the species name is just sanderi but the scientific name is Mandevilla sanderi or Mandevilla (syn. Dipladenia) sanderi.
      We could just call it Brazilian Jasmine or Rocktrumpet but common names are so gauche.

      Yeah they can be temperamental if they don't get everything they need all the time. I've found that lower light levels causes problems, as does lower temperatures, and then there's overwatering too depending on the time of the year! Add into the mix the various hybrids - all of which can have slightly different needs then it becomes almost impossible to offer a general care guide for Mandevilla. And then of course you have some hybrids which have specifically had the climbing characteristic bred out of them. And yeah I would love some cuttings but I think LA to Manchester, UK is probably a step too far. Thanks for the offer though - I really do appreciate it. Pity we're not closer.
