Animal Rights' Provocateur In Chief: Ingrid Newkirk | Rich Roll Podcast

  • Thanks for watching! Read all about Ingrid here 👉🏼bit.ly/richrol...
The legendary & controversial co-founder and president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk has spent the better part of her life fighting for animal welfare around the world.
Today’s conversation is about Ingrid’s storied and controversial career. It’s about what it takes to not only spark, but lead a movement. And it's a gut check on the current status of animal rights - how far we’ve come, and how much father we have left to go.
This conversation was recorded pre-pandemic on February 18, 2020. Therefore there is no coronavirus discussion. However, I think Ingrid's message is profoundly of the moment given the undeniable role animal agriculture plays in fomenting disease.

Wow - what a treat! I have met Ingrid last year in Phoenix - she is absolutely lovely - and been a supporter of PETA for decades. Her “methods” got the attention of the world and made a massive difference to million if not billions of animals. Thank you Rich and Ingrid for all that you do.

What an interesting interview. It’s actually changed my perception of PETA and opened my eyes to animal experimentation which I really had little knowledge about. Well done Rich, another thought provoking episode.

Brilliant! Most vegans say they wish they had done it years ago. I certainly do and I was in my 50's when I went vegan. It's been the best thing I've ever done for my own health and wellbeing as well as the animals. My biggest regret is not doing it sooner.

I have a lot of respect for this woman. Being a pioneer in the animal rights movement must have seemed like an almost impossible task back then. Also after getting so much hate, backlash and ridicule, it takes a lot of love for animals and a strong conviction to keep on going.

Of course I knew about PETA, butI really enjoyed hearing about Ingrid’s personal story and was so impressed by the breadth of her knowledge and the passion that fuels all she has done for so long. She likely influenced my choice become vegan nine years ago, after 21 years as a vegetarian. If only I’d known sooner the truth about dairy. Proud to be raising my kids vegan and I hope more of her vision comes true as their generation grows up.

I have heard negatives about PETA in the past (euthanizing dogs and cats) but understand there are limits to what they can do. It is hard to accept slow change when we want a kind vegan world. I understand why Ingrid has trouble keeping her cool and wants to push buttons. She has dedicated her life to this movement which is more than the majority of us has done. The criticism is unfounded in my opinion. Thanks for a great podcast.

Thank you for one more episode. At 1:28:41 It's being compared the carbon footprint of a round-trip flight from LA-London to having two boxes of chicken nuggets. What are the sources of that data? As far as I count find the flight would take around 770 kg and of chicken around 7 kg (for 1kg of meat). Don't get me wrong, I want to believe in that, I would love to use that fact, it will for sure make feel better about flying. Once more, thank you, keep up with great work.

She is so precious!. Thank heaven for her terrific commitment, and thank you so much for inviting her. As for the final minutes of your conversation, I think the whole vegan community would need a honest discussion. There are thousands of veganism advocates out there (and as many self-describing animal-rights activists who are not vegan, and often not even vegetarian!) who every day on social media practice horrible verbal abuse towards meat eaters, hunters etc, wishing them unspeakable tortures and agonizing deaths. These are people who claim to devote their whole life to universal peace and non-violence, and don't even realise the dramatic contradiction they are embracing. Yet it is their voices that resonate, not the quiet, patient, tolerant message of the many who try to do their best through non-judgmental dialogue and the silent example of their life choices. It's because of them that vegans are often labelled and dismissed as "nazi", and the cause of veganism is not spreading as fast as we all wished. Certainly they are of big damage to the community and of very good service to the meat industry, because they only get back the opposite reaction by the people they attack. I myself have been assaulted for expressing my disapproval of such approach, and have withdrawn in shock from many "vegan" and "animal rights" channels and FB pages. That's why I love so much the job you do for the sake of real peace and human evolution.

God gave animals for meat. In Genesis 9:2-4, after the flood, God gave Noah specific instructions about eating. Man would no longer be restricted to a vegetarian diet. He was to consider all animals as food. The only restriction was that no animal could be eaten with the blood still inside it. Blood represents the sacredness of life, and, even in the eating of the animal, people were to respect the fact that they had taken a life that only God can create (Leviticus 17:11). Medical research later revealed that this is also a healthy practice, as eating under-cooked meat can cause illness. God’s commands are always for our good.
If PETA’s only concern was the humane treatment of animals, Christians could heartily support their goals. However, PETA goes much further than that and grants “rights” to animals that parallel those of humans. PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk stated, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness, and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. Each one values his or her life and fights the knife.” Statements like that take PETA’s goals to extremist levels, ones that Bible-honoring Christians cannot condone. People are not animals.

Omg, Rich, can you for once not have a left-wing hater on your show. I am a Trump voter, listen to Rush Limbaugh often, eat plant-based, and the first thing I hear is an insult from this woman I was interested to hear from. And you talked about having a nuanced, balanced conversation, and it starts right of with a stereotype. Too bad!!!

    • @thatisyoga
      @thatisyoga 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Regardless, whatever PETA feeds rescued animals, it doesn’t justify the average consumer paying for pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, to be slaughtered for they themself to eat.

  • @scocassovegetus

So sad that Ingrid still upholds feminism, a movement based upon lies; she might pay the same heed to feminism that she pays to the treatment of animals and in turn have an eye-opening experience. Since she is interested in numbers and math, it's quite a simple task to obliterate any feminist numbers, for one thing, but arithmetic is merely one of many feminist fallacies and they are always creating new ones all the time. Lies upon lies upon lies, but no matter how large they weave their lies, all it takes is pulling at one thread to start unravelling the whole thing.
