After watching Down To Earth, Treebox (London) episode, I planted dozens of pollenating shrubs and flowers, started growing fruit outside and making a real effort to create an eco-friendly environment where I have power over it.
We have strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and bell peppers - so easy to grow - even easier than indoor plants - and we have so many different bumble bees and honey bees now! Butterflies, etc. Even the cats are loving it. I’m so in love with helping this planet

I love listening to Darin, his deep conversations don't make me want to be just like him but make me want to look harder at myself. What do I want for my health and how can I contribute to my community and what can I do to leave a smaller footprint. He gives me that spark of knowledge that makes me want to dig deeper, a burning desire to learn more.

I don't think I"ve ever seen another human with more in common with me than Darin has, but, when he got to talking about blood diamonds, I just about fell of my chair, I quit wearing jewelry in the 80's after reading an article about a little boy having his hand chopped off for stealing from a diamond mine, DeBeer's allowed the local legal system to apply any and all punishment if they caught their "child slaves" trying to steal.. When the 90's rolled around the concept of blood diamonds came to light in the mainstream, I at first stopped wearing diamonds, then I realized all jewelry even fake is destructive and has some connection to resource extraction....I have survived most of my adult life without having to artificially shine. What great podcast, thanks guys.

i have been planning on building off grid on some property i purchased a few years ago, and in british columbia, have been coming up against so many barriers even before building. i want to build an earthen home with solar, compositing etc etc etc, but its always no with each turn step i try...its not right. its come to the point when i finally realized that we are owned by the governing powers. they do not care.....they are a gang. any person who wants to build for themselves, will most always build better than what the generic cookie fabricated homes. you are right about getting our power back, but its really freedom is what is at stake. i agree that it starts with our own personal health, mentally, spiritually, and physically...i think what your doing is awesome and i am very proud of you two...thanks for helping me to stay awake.

Just don't forget, there's something to be said about eating local grown food as much as possible too.

    • @rileyclarke9201
      @rileyclarke9201 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes. Couldn't agree more. To be honest, the idea of someone traveling around the world in the search for 'superfoods' to mass produce in factories, package in plastic and ship around the world sounds to me like the opposite of environmental sustainability.
How many superfoods have come out in recent years? Too many to count. These are all marketing scams to make you think you are missing out on something that will make you feel amazing and healthy. Superfoods are, quite frankly, bullshit.
Human nutrition is very simple and doesn't require us to eat exotic foods from all over the world, shipped to us for our pleasure.
How did we ever survive before these magical superfoods were available to us?
We would all benefit greatly from removing all processed foods (seed oils, refined grains and refined sugar).
Then only eat whole foods produced locally.
Whatever your dietary inclinations - its that simple.

Agree, I think with Darin's presence/fame, he can work on a macro scale, and certainly figuring out how to preserve the rainforest is a major goal for the world, but, as someone once told me, "we can all do our little part", and for me that's going to the _local_ farmers market. Though I think that's something Darin and Zach highlighted on the show, for example the resurgence of local foods in Puerto Rico after the hurricane, due to the lack of availability of cheap imports.

Dang Rich! I only got about 38 minutes into this and had to stop. Partly because I got home from the store and had to make dinner. (Portobello mushroom burgers and Brussel sprouts on the grill. ) I had never heard of Darin’s show on Netflix and honestly didn’t know who Zack was. I watched the first episode in Iceland and loved it.
I’ve watched a lot of things in Netflix but this is a new favorite.
Hopefully I’ll get back to your interview another time soon! Thanks for sharing this!

Couldn't agree with Darin more on the monopolies over energy. Great matter to highlight. If we as humans are infinite possibilities, we must all be able to live off grid. Fundamental to that, I suggest, is that we all need to simplify, let go of our materialistic tendency thereby significantly reducing our consumption of the planet. If we reduce the issue at source - Consumerism - we have the opportunity to truly impact our planet and our lives. More peaceful and joyful human beings will result.

Thank God I found this video. I just shared it. I watched Down to Earth , 4 times. I love the humor between Darin and Zac but love the info. So amazing what's possible. America needs a wake up. Seriously. So much Greed. That's what's behind the power, meds, food, water, etc. Iwas lol when Darin chased off tree trimmers from power co. YOU GO DUDE....ya I am hoping to be off grid someday. Trying to learn minimalism. Bless you. Thanks Rich. I'm a new fan

Great interview, thanks Rich! Love the origin story for the show - only in California! I understand Darin might have wanted the show to be different, but as a fan, I think it worked out beautifully. Certainly, there is great chemistry between Zack and Darin - they seem to be lifelong friends, I had no idea they met just to do the show. Somehow, the mix of characters works really well, with Darin's mix of down-to-earth Minnesotan / avant-garde Californian, and Zach's curiosity and enthusiasm. (Reminded me a bit of the fun of Rich in a clip where he and an IronMan buddy went to a grocery store in Hawaii to find super-foods.) Super interesting, and super fun. Darin / Zach - thanks for the inspiring show, hope to see more episode, whether on Netflix or wherever.

First, I adore this podcast! And the nuts must be delicious but the one-way packaging is still there. How can we change that? How can we eat nuts without having to buy this super designed packaging. Don't take me wrong... I buy often nuts packed in a similar way but it's wrong and I feel terrible. It's also not sustainable at all. Can you think about commercializing them in another way? Maybe only in packaging-free supermarkets?

Hi there, I m Lorenza from Brasil, unfortunately for the people who didn t vote for the current president, we sadly watch our forest Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal burning, just the Pantanal already burned 3.000.000 acres these past months, and our government praise the agribusiness doing it so, we feel hopeless and not understanding how can this be happening.
Hearing about how the baru nuts helps local people to cash from keeping the nature in cerrado, made me very glad, hope you all americans buy lots of baru nuts and became vegans, as now Brasil is exporting a lot of meat to other countries, so lets chang the stake or meat burguer for baru nuts people.
I from south of Brasil and here we have Araucaria trees with their amazing seeds, pinhao, Darin would love it, this tree lives up to 700 years, they are magestic and they are geting close to extinction as only 3% of the original Araucaria forest is left in south of Brasil, right now the power company was aloud to cut 4.000 of these trees to pass out the high power lines and people are fighting back to save the Araucaria trees, anyway it made me think of how important is for us to be able to generate our own energy, unfortunately my current roof doesn t have the space enough for photovoltaic energy plaques, but I will keep following Darin to know other options for making ourbown energy, so we don t need to keep releiing on these companies.
Sorry if my english is not clear enough. But I m very glad that that you are sharing the word and more and more people are serching for sustanable ways to live.

She loves the melody of the voices and then she's jolted awake by the violence of the tone. You close the interview 10 times before the end (which I love for its authenticity) and I try to lunge for the computer when I hear you say, "Peace! Plants...," but I rarely make it in time. Help! I'm being presumptive but I'm certain Darin has been in contact with Michael Reynolds, the creator of Earthships... based in Taos, New Mexico... he has over 40 years experience with Off-Grid AND fighting the government. He was FINALLY (years years years) given permission by being forced into creating a development with roads, sewage, power infrastructure that THEY DO NOT USE.
IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY... and, rightly so... communities MUST know about zoning and property tax 'earnings' so they can provide for the citizenry... so we all 'get it'... but GROWTH and change are what we ALL need... allover the planet.
Kudos to Darin. I'm sad his relationship/marriage didn't survive thru his travels... glad he met a 100 year old woman that reminded him she didn't need a man so he doesn't NEED a woman. After the fire and destruction of his home he is STILL living there, still sequestered, still alone... yet he knows he has love in his life, friendships, connection.
Happy to have listened to this podcast. Thanks, Rich.

For skin and body care products I have been using the EWG site for years now. It rates each product for toxicity and breaks down the ingredients into which are toxic and how they affect the health. It is at www.ewg.org/skindeep/. I must admit, I don't watch Netflix or television so I haven't heard about Down to Earth. I do watch things I am interested in on TH-cam on similar topics. I have been enjoying your podcast. TH-cam Ashton Kutcher on Hot Ones after this and tell me Darin isn’t an older Ashton lol. I feel like their brains and essence are freakishly aligned

The beginning of the water conversation left me suspicious but Darin clearly is a subject matter expert and I enjoyed learning from him.

    Hi Rich/Darin
    I’m in the U.K.
Are you just looking out for Americans/Canadians.
We need you guy’s over here as well distributing your products etc.
I have tinnitus and 3am I put this on to take away the tinnitus sounds and drift back to sleep and 5:30 I’m writing to complain that I can’t buy your nuts.
Now that is nuts. Great info I’m now heading over to Netflix.
    Your both absolutely brilliant.

Let's see a show on how to empower those without wealth to be able to unplug from monopolies. What models exist out there now? Do they transplant or are they unique to the geographic and cultural milieu from which it emerged?

Going vegan is a great start. No, it's not hard. It's literally picking a different product in a supermarket.

Joining in not buying-using single use water bottles, would like to buy a small tent. Rich sleeps in a tent, should I find a canvas tent?? to avoid more 'plastic'...most popular and top rated are nylon. Also, jet fuel is so not green. What would your guest say about world travel...regarding jet fuel? please answer

@darinolien what you said at 1hour17 minuets I am with you 100%! If you watch dr. Steven Greer’s video on what is available for us when it comes to electricity and power in general, most people aren’t aware of clean energy that isn’t solar or wind powered. There is one that can power the entire universe that we can harness without ugly power lines and inflated power bills. I hope that you will check it out. I think most of the world population will stand behind this to get it implemented. I hope you will check it out. I definitely want to be part of it

I think the reason why the show is so popular is because they made it with celebrity and it basically was a fluff on important issues. In my experience most people enjoy fluff material and conversation. When the content turns serious and more informative, people get uncomfortable and standoffish and simply shut it out. It’s sad, it just seems like people just want just enough knowledge to get by and live in the dark at the same time. I personally would have loved a more in-depth show that Darin wanted, a more scientific, in your face information based show. I love Darin, his whole vibe and knowledge and love of discovery. I did love the show, don’t get me wrong... I’m glad it brought attention to some very important issues. I hope the whole experience with Darin left an impact on all that was involved.

Earth Mamma Ignorance is bliss unfortunately! I’d they have to make an effort or change their habits, they’re not interested.
