In this seventy-fifth episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show, hosts Dan Hayes and Greg Sadler discuss Stoic philosophy and practice, looking at a number of listener contributed questions about this particular tradition of philosophy as a way of life. The video in the Zoom session didn't record this time, so we just have a static image, but you're welcome to listen along!
    The questions we address include:
What are some of the big things that people tend to get wrong when they are encountering Stoicism for the first time?
How to not get sucked into the shitshow of the world while still being aware of the shitshow of the world.
How about discussing the concept of a conscious and providential universe? What this means/ how this applies to us as Stoics?
Is there a clash between stoic concepts and the modern world that mean we need to adjust our stoic ideas? For example social media and how to manage it.
Do you think the idea of / focus on all of the segmented applications of Stoicism to the roles we occupy and the professions we choose are necessary? It often feels a bit like over-marketing-or a quick way of selling books, offering life-hacks, advertising conference tickets, or gaining followers than something that adds any actual value.
Women and stoicism, and how our practice of stoicism differs in light of out lives and biologies.
How can the Stoic’s approach to fairness, responsibility and community inform or improve local communities and modern politics?
Should Stoics proselytize, or just lead by example?
When, if ever do stoics fight back?

This is a show in which Dan Hayes and I explore ideas from philosophy and connected fields and apply them to issues and challenges from everyday life. We range quite broadly, sometimes exploring resources from philosophical traditions like Stoicism, Aristotelianism, Existentialism, among others. We focus on both understanding theory and key ideas, and on experimenting with philosophies in practice, or philosophy as a way of life. We discuss social, political, ethical, relationship, dating, and workplace issues. We also occasionally answer listener questions, or focus a show on untangling moral dilemmas found in AITA posts. We have also done interviews with guests ranging from academic philosophers to NFL football players. And we sometimes stray over into literature and popular culture, for example, in looking at Philip K. Dick's works.

It sounds like a religion now with sects of "modern" and "traditional". People should use the philosophy rather than zealously identifying with a title as they seem to lose individuality, a melting of all into a certain one mindedness. The sort even mimic the same language and repeat the same examples. Then again, the way of cynicism would be ideal should We will to make the correct changes and stop identifying with any label. To say, "I am a stoic", tells me something about a person. The person did not listen to Epictetus when he said not to identify as a philosopher and just be a philosopher. I percieve this young man to care too about us knowing what he is. Mr. Sadler is too nice. He knows Chapter 23 and perhaps the young man will follow Dr. Sadler's example with humility. I still appreciate seeing this content.

Traditional is a bit secty. Modern not at all. That’s a big tent. So you’re kinda right, but mostly wrong
