Night train from Berlin to Copenhagen | Travel Vlog

  • Possibly one of the worst decisions we ever made was to take a "night" train from Berlin to Copenhagen. We were aware that this was not an actual night train with beds, but we figured we'd still be able to sleep on it. Oh were we wrong. This was probably the most confusing and unorganised train experience we've had to deal with this whole time in Europe, but at least we eventually made it to Copenhagen.

Well, you haven`t been on many train rides if this was your worst train ride ever, looool!

I know literally every country in Europe likes to complain about their national train service but as a Dane, I can confirm that DSB (The danish one) is the Numero uno on the worst train companies list. I mean as if this wasn't enough to prove that already. Honestly If I were to go from Berlin to Copenhagen I would take the Berlin Night Express to Malmö if available and then take a commuter train from there. At least on the BNE you can get some rest on a bunk bed as well as not have to worry about being stranded on the middle of Sugar Beets nowhere at shit am.

I now wish we had taken that train. The rest on a bed sounds nice. I guess in our head it sounded better to go direct but boy were we wrong.

I can give you some updates, and it looks like they're heading into a better direction. They're ordering new trains for this route, which we will know more about later this month. One thing we do know is that they will introduce a self service catering station on the new train (finally catering again on a DSB train!) Plus they held a competition where people could suggest ways for them to be greener and one of the winning bids was a last minute ticket which would be cheaper than a standard, in order to fill the trains, which would certainly make them much better value!

@@drdewott9154 Thanks for updating us! That last minute ticket for cheaper sounds like a great idea

@@KeithandSally I may be like pretty late on this, but just so you, and everyone else knows. In 2021 the Berlin Night Express train was modified, meaning that it now actually stops in Copenhagen, at the suburban train station of Høje Taastrup in the west of the city. So again if anyone wants to take a train at night between Berlin/Hamburg and Copenhagen, take that, not the DSB train.

What were you expecting when booking the trian? You got clearly seats assigned. Seating cars are not a good option for a night ride. But it was clearly indicated when you were booking.

We knew the train was a normal one when we booked it. The issue was the lights didn’t dim or shut off at any point and we had to get off halfway to change trains because of a mechanical issue.

I took this train at around 8AM from Hamburg to Copenhagen and having started at 2AM in an IC train from DB this was luxurious. DB was loud and shaky. This however was really quiet and comfortable, didn't stop as much and I slept half the time. I am used to DB/NXR/Abellio, and those seats were really comfortable. For a diesel train it was quiet as well. I brought a sleeping mask in advance which, wiht those seats I think are comfortable, allowed me to sleep.
With the Mechanical issues. That's bad luck i guess. Today you have the Snalltaget which is an acutal night train but the bed reservations costs are really high. I for myself would take this train again.
BUT: This is only MY opinion.

The Danish Intercities are way more comforable than the German Intercities. Of course, sleeper trains are the first choice in the night. I remember the fond days of the D 390 "Alfred Nobel", Hamburg to Stockholm/Oslo.

    A nightmare indeed.
Better to check out SAS and check prices on their "SAS Plus Smart" ticket. Just before the pandemic, I flew from Berlin to Stockholm and then on to Amsterdam a few days later, and it was cheaper to do that than anything else - and I'm assuming it's similar to Copenhagen.
Not to mention it included just about everything you could ask for - lounge access, 2x 50lb baggage, free food AND booze on board, extra Aeroplan miles, priority security, and seating at the front of the plane (albeit the seats are the same as regular economy).
The price was only slightly higher than a regular economy ticket - and I think it was around $125 CAD for each segment.

Apparently they are not allowed to do so, at the very least in Denmark. The German crew did turn the lights off, but after the passport control, where the German crew swaps with a Danish crew, they left it on and on request we were told that they are not allowed to turn off the lights.

Ahh yes we know that it's not technically a night train (the guy at the station said there used to be one many years ago though?). It was just easier to call it a "night train" rather than "a regular train that runs at night".
