  • In this video we spent the day trying danish food in Copenhagen. We taste some delicious Danish food including the un-official food of Denmark, Smørrebrød. Smørrebrød is a traditional open-faced sandwich and is a very popular cuisine in Denmark. Copenhagen is also famous for its pastries so we make sure to try Kanelsnegle (Danish Cinnamon Buns) and the popular Pistachio Croissants. These are a must try when in Copenhagen.

Go to Juno the Bakery for kardemommesnurrer which is one of the best pasteries, much better than the kanelsnegl in this video. Go to Cafe Halvvejen for really good, traditional smørrebrød (open- faced sandwiches) at great prices or go to Aamanns for a more modern interpretation. You can't go wrong with either. If you go to the Gasoline Grill for burgers, the cheeseburger is the superior burger. For beer go to Fermentoren, which is close to the central station or Bootleggers across from Torvehallerne. In Østerbro Kompasset is the best place for beer and if you venture out to Nørrebro, Ølbaren in Elmegade is great. On your way you can stop by Slurp Ramen, which is simply amazing. Their veggie ramen is crazy good as is their other options. Hope you'll enjoy the city!

Frikadeller is defo a solid choice if you wanna go traditionel danish smørrebrød. All tho my favorite is the the leverpostej/liver-pate, which isn't so scary as the name suggests, if you don't like anything made from innards. The spices in leverpostej are mostly perfectly balanced and adding pickled beetroot, onions and even thinly sliced "corned beef" makes this a really nice dish. Give it a try if you're still around Denmark or maybe next time if you're up for a return trip ;-)

Regarding Danish pastries. You said it yourself, would be nice with coffee. That´s one of the reasons Danes are amongst the most coffee drinking people on earth. We have a cup of coffee with our pastries. That is the perfect match.

Tivoli Food Halls is a special place in my mind.
Usually tourist traps is defined by bad food at high prices, whereas the food at all the stalls in that place generally of high quality.
But thats why 9 out of 10 customers in that place is foreigners, since no dane would pay their insane pricing.

  • @Menhtrol
    @Menhtrol 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Walt Disney took inspiration from Tivoli (and a few other places like Greenfield Village) when creating Disneyland.
Ps. What a lot of tourist often don't really take into account when it comes to the prices in Copenhagen
is that the city it self is a massive tourist hotspot and the Capital of Denmark which does prop up prices in places like restaurants and pubs somewhat.

By that we have an artificial ski hill on top of an incinerator Plant! And you should be able to find an "Irish Pub" also.

Tivoli is an amusement park, but from the beginning in 1843 not with rides, which came much later.
From the beginning it was a park for taking a stroll, where Søren Kirkegaard and H.C.Andersen enjoyed that too, perhaps visiting a restaurant, and the earliest amusement was the Pantomime Theater. It was restaurated in 1873 to be what it is today, and definitely something you should have watched while there.

You did it just right with the smørrebrød.
The trick is to get a bit of everything in one bite.
Most versions have evolved over centuries, and the ingredients are meant to compliment eachother in flavor, texture and smell.
The luxurious edition you got, is not what people usually make, when they prepare the every day smørrebrød at home. It’s a less “ornamented” version, that can be eaten without the cutlery.
Depending on your definition of “amusement park”, Tivoli Gardens is “only” the 3rd oldest amusement park in the world.
The oldest is also in Copenhagen. Situated north of Copenhagen in Klampenborg. “Dyrehavsbakken” (“Bakken”). Est. 1583.
2nd oldest is “Wurstelprater” in Austria. Est. 1766.
Tivoli was built around 30 years after the french revolution. Social unrest were widespread through Europe, and an argument for building it was “people are less likely to revolt, when they’re entertained”.
Walt Disney was heavily influenced by it, when he was planning of building his own in Anaheim, California in 1955.

Oh yes please come back during the summer, maybe for the Jazz Festival. We really are a different people then. And then explore the rest of the city. I was actually shocked at how expensive things were in your video. Obviously Danes have higher wages than most people, but wow. In the "bro" areas, you will find authentic bodegas and smørrebrød at a completely different price level. Bro means cobbled in Danish and the bro areas are the districts that were built after 1857, when the fortifications were given up and cobbled streets were established.

The more traditional pieces of smørrebrød have got names.
Someone already mentioned The Vets Nightdish (Dyrlægens Natmad).
Rye with liverpate, salt meat and meat jelly. Typically topped with watercress and red onion.
The salt meat is probably a danish thing, the meat jelly (kraftsky) certainly is.
Another one is Sun Above Gudhjem (Sol Over Gudhjem).
Rye with smoked herring topped with chives, red onion raw yolk and maybe some radish.
    Watch out for salmonella.
A real treat is the Shooting Star (Stjerneskud).
Buttered white bread (this is a special one) with steamed white plaice and fried breaded plaice topped with shrimp topped with (yes, topping on the topping) mayonnaisse, cucumber salad, lumpfish roe or caviar and a twist of lemon.
    And many more.

I am Danish so thanks for your video. If you want to come here again chose late/mid August. At that time it is less crowdy but the weather is still nice (usually). Next time try the danish hotdog. Try some microbreweries. And perhaps our national dish: "Stegt flæsk med persillesovs". Yes you have to google it. It is often served ad libitum so you can eat until you explode.

im pretty sure you bought smørrebrød from one of the most expensive places in Denmark. a piece of smørrebrød of that size is usually around 30-40 Dkk, and you can get cheaper versions with less garnish/toppings called "Håndmadder" for around 15-20 DKK (translated to hand foods; named this way cause the less toppings makes it more manageable to eat with your hands, though i would stil eat it with knife and fork)

Many bakeries are making onsdagssnegle on Wednesdays. They are extra large and sold at a (usually) good price. Many people like pastries in the weekend or leading up to weekend. So why not try to sell some snailbreads on Wednesdays. It's good business!

You definetely get the right smørrebrød, frikadelle, is a stable in danish cusine. And it's just a meatball, but served on ryebread with the toppings, it's quite nice.
You won't find a dane that will reject a piece of smørrebrød.

Making these open sandwiches (smørrebrød) at home you would very rarely make them as fancy as you get them in restaurants (obviously). Ex. the one you got would most likely only have the meat and not much else. Maybe pickled red cabbage witch is also a very Danish thing.

Good video, don't listen to all the "tourist trap" people and its called this and that, without a danish guide, how would you know. The cake and the rye bread was the most authentic. Yes they were quite expensive and yes you could buy them cheaper when not in the middle of Copenhagen, but thats where tourists will tend to visit. Alot of people have year round pass cards for Tivoli, so they can enjoy the park as it is beautiful. They do decorations for the seasons, Christmas, Halloween aso. The rye bread dish is called, as you said, smørrebrød, which just translates into bread with spread. A lot of people eat it daily in a less decorative fashion, also refered to has "hand foods", because they are easier to eat without a knife and fork. The rye bread is great for your stomach and keeps you full longer than white bread. Theres a lot of "traditional" versions, not one is the true one, theres liverpate, meatball, fish fillet, fish meatball, and many many more. In fact, you can buy a whole case of different ones, or whichever you want from a lot of butchers and caterers for when you get lunch guests. Theres also the large version which is simply called "high coated" because it stacked taller with ingredients. We also have some traditional lunches where this is served for easter (lunch) or Christmas lunch, but here you tend to assemble them yourself at the table with ingredients that are dependent on the season. If you wanna visit again you can pm for more info about danish stuff.

thank you so much, we found your comment extremely helpful. We have recieved alot of comments about our choices in Copenhagen but unfortunelty for us we only booked 3 days so we didnt have a huge amount of time to explore other parts, and as you said when you dont know the city like us, we end up visiting popular places. Our mistake was booking too short a trip especially now that we loved our visit and wish it was longer :-) but we will return again for sure...thank you for your comment 🙏

Bread and bread can be two *very* different things.
The anglophone world has mostly switched to factory breads that's filled with preservatives and stuff that makes you feel bad.
Instead I recommend eating the breads of the Germanic parts of Europe that's honestly better quality, healthier and with less preservatives.

But a summerday in Howth, the black stuff and a Jamie is also very grand :)
