Battle For The Best New GMT Watch Under $1000 In 2022 - Seiko, Citizen & Bulova - Sports 5 vs Wilton

  • In this video, we'll take an exclusive first look at a contender for the best new GMT watch under $1000 in 2022. I analyze the rivalry between Citizen and Seiko as they're both on the verge of releasing affordable alternatives to the quintessential Rolex Pepsi GMT. How do they compare? What are their strengths and weaknesses? How is each brand employing design, functionality, and their own heritage in the horological match for the superior watch? Join me for a world exclusive premiere of not only a brand new watch but also a new movement from Miyota in the soon to be released Bulova Wilton. I discuss how it's a game changer and how it compares to my own Rolex GMT Master II and the new Seiko SKX Sports Style GMT series (ref. SSK001, SSK003, and SSK005).

Do you think the Seiko GMT will be an easier pill to swallow for the die hard skx fan over the 5kx considering GMTs are viewed as more of a pilots watch than a diver?

I don’t want to be “that guy”, but dang, I’m still not over it… Taking a “Professional Level” watch… an icon, and cutting its man parts off… I am happy for newcomers to experience the genius case design, and now a low cost entry to a GMT function, but the full spec ruggedness is what drew me to the SKX (I stayed for the comfort and the original, come iconic, design). I’ll continue to enjoy the OG (on the “level raising” Uncle Seiko fitted rubber strap, while I save for my BB58Pro.
…then again, what Seiko decide to house this movement in the new Alpinist case? Give me a screw down crown and sapphire, and I may get distracted from the Tudor.

I think for the price, the Seiko is an absolute steal, but I do like the design of the Bulova. The deal breaker for me is as you said the size of the Bulova is a tad bit too large

I do agree, but I paid £260 for my 5 sports a couple of months back, and they have dropped to £225 in some places. So £400 for the same movement and case with one added feature, seems slightly steep. However if we wait a few months, I reckon it will drop to nearer £330.

I would argue that an astronaut would not be a re-release, but a new watch or homage of the original. The astronaut was a tuning fork battery based Accutron 214 movement, it was purposely not an automatic because the pilots needed better accuracy. I’d argue it would most certainly be cool, but not a re-issue and certainly would deviate from the original design intent: a battery powered super accurate cockpit chronometer.

Smaller watches are better: fit under long sleeves better, less weight, less likely to banged up or hung up on door frames, etc. But because watch companies move with all the speed of a deceased sloth, it'll be about two decades before the smaller watch "trend" is fully integrated and accepted in the industry and by ignorant WIS, lol.

The GMT I'd recommend to anyone is the Christopher Ward Sealander C63 GMT. Just over $1,000 it's my daily wearer. 39mm, 46mm Lug to Lug, 20mm Lug width, 12mm thick, Screw down crown, 150m water resistance, independently set 24 hour hand with fixed 24 hour bezel, 56 hour power reserve (I tested mine and it was spot on), Sellita SW330-2 movement at 4hz, comes in a variety of slick colors, dresses up and down without any collision with style, and on a Melanaise bracelet this thing is to die for. I have found myself neglecting all of my other watches for 6 months or so now as this watch is comfortable, durable, I can track to two time zones I work in on a daily basis, and I can jump in the pool with my kids without thinking about it. I often get compliments on this watch. Also, the Lume is great, and the dial is very well designed to have incredible legibility. Highly recommend 👌🏼

Thank you, TUG, for your unbiased review. Non-sponsored reviews are truly rare these days. I, personally, favor the Bulova over the Seiko in this case. I have a 7.5" wrist and love the Wilton GMT. It is just beautiful. Most travelers these days would probably not need a dive style watch and I think Bulova / Citizen hit a home run with the design and obviously with their new Miyota movement. But watching all the reviews, I see I'm probably in the minority with my opinion, as far as Bulova choosing a relatively large dress watch to house the Miyota 9075.

Just when everyone was ready to write off Seiko's ability to deliver incredible value for money, they come out with the Seiko 5 GMT. I think it's an absolute steal for the price. The Bulova is also quite a looker for a dressier GMT as well. My pick however for a GMT under $1000 is actually the Glycine Combat Sub GMT. I love the colors they offer it in too.

      @timemeasured9137 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed! The Glycine combat sub GMT is excellent. I own the the GL0380 and it’s a keeper in my collection!!! Sadly these models have gotten little to no attention. Glycine certainly needs to improve on marketing, they make great tool watches.

Question here: I don't mean to offend anyone, but I genuinely struggle to understand if this Glycine is considered a Rolex homage. Because there's obvious similarities, same I guess could be said for the Heuer Autavia in comparison to a Daytona, especially the Jack Heuer edition, which is a $6000 watch. Yes, I know the Autavia has its own history and all, but if we scratched all history, branding and background on these two watches, I think they would be considered homage watches. Is there a definite line I am missing here?
Is homage watches only a stamp we give to watches from unknown Chinese brands?
For the sake being, if I took the Glycine and scratched off the logo, and did the same with an automatic GMT homage from Ali Express, and we didn't consider the prices, finishes, or the movements, are there still factors that would separate the two as being an homage or not?
I've seen watch reviews from Ali Express homage watches which has had significant and somewhat original design differences from its intended model, but are still considered homages... I'm puzzled.
Maybe this could be a video idea for @the urban gentry

@@raven_of_zoso455, it might be fair to call the Rolex gmt a homage to Glycine. The Airman was already a thing for over a year before Rolex got around to it. Also, he’s already covered this before.

Excellent video TGV. Even though the Bulova is pretty good, and my wrist is ok for the size, I'm a bit more excited about the GMT kx. Even though owning an original SKX I do have a nice blue dial 5kx as it was so attractive to look at!

Nice video, thanks! I absolutely agree on the Accutron Astronaut. Perhaps the success of the Tudor Black Bay Pro will encourage Bulova to re-issue this style with the new gmt. It'd be a hit at below $1K, for sure.

The fact that the Miyota movement is a True GMT, as opposed to the Caller GMT of the Seiko movement, makes it a clear winner in my book. I can’t wait to see what micro brands are going to start doing with he Minolta movement.

I purchased the Bulova, black dial. I have 2 Seiko mods (one of them a GMT) and a tuna already, so I wanted the different style. It really doesn't feel that big, since it's thinner than the Seiko. Can't go wrong with either. Pick a style or buy them both!

Check out the Jack Mason Strat o Timer, which also uses the Miyota 9075 movement. It doesn’t have the horological history of a Bulova but it otherwise, seems to check all the boxes.
