    • @wristopia4101

      I think that makes him just a normal watch enthusiast, and a lot of TH-camrs have a similar outlook if you are not in denial to the watches they actually own (ie. you only see the sub $500 ones).
      The problem when $ is mentioned is people hating on the Big Boys, not the other way around.
      Teddy is basically a Gent that does it better than everyone else, but watch enthusiasts love watches, not Dollar ; )
      Hating on $5000/$15,000 (you know the brand I mean) watches means you are not a watch enthusiast, and guys that do that need to 'BE MORE TEDDY' 😉
      Not saying Teddy is one, but people really need their BS detectors turned on when watching some TH-camrs.
      One in the UK lies about so much to make it seem he is 'down with the little guys' (I chose those words to make a point, not because I feel there are little guys), but pretty sure he owns Rolex's etc. etc. that he pretends he doesn't!

    I have a citizen Skyhawk. I work with a guy who was an attack helicopter pilot in the Marines. He told me that the citizen Skyhawk watches were extremely popular among pilots. They used the slide rule capability to calculate the amount of flying time they had left based on fuel supply. That really sold me on buying one.

      I'm a pilot, as is my son. We each have some form of Skyhawk. I have to admit that it's never crossed my mind to actually use the E6B function of the watch. My favorite features are the UTC dial and the ease of switching time zones. The atomic clock synching is nice as well.
      I'd say many new pilots are attracted to the Skyhawks, but their functionality in the cockpit has long been surpassed by technology in the same way that dive watches have been replaced by dive computers. I still wear mine at times though.

    I’m a navy seal master diver, I did 20 deployments with many of them in frigid ocean water, abrasive rocks and sand, and my watch choice was a citizen’s model 48 master diver class. @@kenfury depends on utility, I used the rubber and would change out every few years. Now I have metal band for looks. Salt water can cause issues, I don’t care what metal they use it will rust. I also found the rubber to be more comfortable and easily adjustable with conditions. If you want to wear over long sleeve, the metal makes it very uncomfortable as it isn’t as easily adjustable. My issue with Rolex, that metal band would be so tight over the layers of long sleeve, once the retention rod goes, the links can fail. I’ve seen it. Leather is nice but I’ve seen people get rashes from salt water crystals forming on it.

    Citizen was my first slightly higher quality watch that I bought straight out of high school. It was a Marinaut eco-drive model, and came with a sapphire crystal for 130 Euros. It has been super reliable and now, 16 years later, is still running perfectly well when I give it a charge, without a battery change or service.
    I later bought a Skyhawk AT as well. Loved it at the time, but my style taste has changed a bit since then.
    These days, I have many more expensive watches (JLC, Omega etc), and I can now recognize some of the quality limitations of my 130 Euro citizen. But in terms of utility, reliability and value for money I couldn't praise it more!

    I bought a Citizen AT8010-58E for an office watch over 10 years ago. Ended up wearing it all the time, working in the shop, on the car, hiking, everywhere. Broke off the crown and sent it to Citizen after 7 years, and for $60 they fixed the crown, replaced seal and re-certified and I had it back to me in less than 3 weeks. Never needed a bettery, eco drive and radio controlled update has never failed. amazing watch. I agree, the cheap stuff and all options are too much, but their higher end and customer service is outstanding. Appreciate what you do, keep up the great work. Also, their G-shock is amazing for durability, had one of them for 15 years, still going strong.

If you can't afford a Breitling, a Citizen is likely going to end up on your wrist. Personally, that's why I avoided mechanical watches for decades. The accuracy just isn't there. Now that I don't fly anymore, accuracy isn't quite as important. Your channel has convinced me to buy my first automatic watch. I love it. I just picked up a Citizen NB1050-59E but had to order from Japan. Got it for ~$350. Why this watch isn't more talked about or sold in the States blows me away. 38mm with 10bar WR, 9 series movement with -10/+20 accuracy rating, 4hz, gorgeous black dial and polished finishing with applied markers, applied logo, and Datejust styling. Extremely happy with the watch.

My friend own s Omega Seamaster Bond and Rolex Submariner. He admires Series 8 too. Finish and dial for that money, outstanding. Bracelet also. Citizen is underrated, bang for buck, no match. Even Seiko asks more money for that finishing. My collection is in total less 1500 $ or Eur in EU, it s budget collection in world of watches. I m also music aficionado like lot s of watch enthusiast. Keep up with great work!

    Thank you for giving an honest discussion about Citizen.
    My wife bought me a Citizen Corso with the Eco-Drive. I love the thing. I definitely get what you're saying about them trying to appeal to everyone, which tends to overshadow how the Eco-Drive is very neat, and is more than just another calculator solar watch. Also, they have some impressive technology in their Promaster series and Tsuyosa line.
    However, then you have some other movements and quality that is GREAT for the price, but not necessarily great with respects to quality you can get from other respected/expensive brands.
    I'm a Citizen fan myself, but I am quick to tell new buyers what they're realistically at. For me, the Citizen Eco-Drive is good enough to be an "everyday" watch that won't break your heart if you bang it around alot, but also nice enough where you can wear it with more business casual clothes and it'll fit nicely. I mean, unless you're around Watch enthusiasts, in which case they'll (if they're generous) praise it for its Eco-Drive, but otherwise say nothing else about a Citizen watch in terms of functionality.

    Hey Teddy! Thanks for featuring my comment in the video! I think you hit the nail on the head, but here’s my thoughts as requested;
    For the standard “off-the-shelf” calibers, the manufacturer or an independent watchmaker who is trained and authorized by the brand is generally a safe bet. They see the product often, know how to address common issues, and have an abundance of spare parts. For vintage or more complicated pieces, it’s better to find someone who specializes in that type of work. As you mentioned, a good track record and solid reputation is important, and transparency is key. If the watchmaker isn’t willing to have an honest discussion about their history and experience, it’s probably best to find another. Also, I’ll add that a good watchmaker knows when to turn down a job they’re not properly equipped to perform. A bad watchmaker, on the other hand, never says no.
    The only note I have for you and for all the viewers is to try and push that needle a little bit further to the proactive side! I know it’s easier said than done, but the longer a watch runs after performance starts to dwindle, the worse the problem(s) will get and the higher your service bill is likely to become.
    Thanks again Teddy, you’re the man! If anyone reading this is curious to learn more about horology and my work as a watchmaker, follow my instagram ( @garrinthewatchmaker ) and/or check out the podcast I just launched! The first episode of “The Watchmaker’s Apprentice” is available now on my TH-cam channel or wherever you get your podcasts!

    Took my wife’s wedding ring to the jewelers we bought it from. They had a huge Citizen display. Mostly gaudy , overpriced “mall watches “ you referred to. And alot of chronographs (big turn off for me as I have no need for one). But to each their own. My favorite watch is the Casio my wife bought me in 96 as a Christmas present. Was looking for a watch between $1000 and $2000 with an integrated bracelet and firmly settled on a Citizen Series 8 830 with the mother of pearl dial. Between various Cristopher Ward's, Tissot, Seiko and Longines, the Citizen Series 8 was a no brainer to me in terms of specs and workmanship especially for the price. My 830 is near Grand Seiko quality, or even at least as good as non-spring drive GS, and undoubtably better than any King Seiko i've seen. Not forgetting better than most Swiss watches up to $3000 in terms of workmanship, movement and details. Crazy that the bigger channels never speak about what probably is the ultimate integrated bracelet automatic in this price range.

    The first watch I wanted (1980, going out of elementary school-13 years old) was a Citizen digital watch, my dad was going to give me. They were around $200 dollars by then.
    He had a different idea. He was going to give me a Speedy.
    Being immature, I asked for the Citizen and finally, dad bought me a Waltham digital that played “Yesterday” and “Hey Jude”.
    So many years later, and being infected with the virus of watch collecting, Citizen was a must. So I got a Blue Angels solar chronograph which I like very much.
    The Speedy is still in my bucket list.

    I love Citizen, above Seiko, even. I picked up a promaster eco-drive because I couldn't bring myself to spend $1000 for a watch I was going to beat up with hiking, swimming, etc. This watch is on my wrist more than others. I love it. Their corso line are great do-it-all watches for reasonable prices. As far as Mall Watches go, Tissot and Hamilton are now all over the malls, so it will be interesting to see what that does if anything to those brands, sitting in cases next to Fossil and MK.

    What is magical about watches is that is that each watch has its own Ethos, doesn’t matter if they are “entry level” or budget or luxury or whatever it is. In my book, as an light enthusiast, you gotta mimesis with the machine. And vice versa. In a hypothetical World, if I had to choose just one; that would be Omega Speedmaster, Professional. The most beautiful no doubt Nautilus PF, most Iconic, Rolex Submariner. One brand; Vacheron Constantin, AP Oak the Third Big, of the Holy Trinity. Seiko Citizen Casio;

    It would be interesting to see a story about American watches - Cincinnati Watch Co, Shinola, Jack Mason, Vaer, Sangin and even Fifty Five Fathoms come to mind. Some are simply assembly and some are working hard to truly bring back watch making to the US. An episode on the Bulova veterans’ watch making institute would be cool as well.

I inherited my grandfather's early calibre 139 movement (10K gold-filled case/Star Watch Company/34.5mm) back in 1985 and still wear it periodically. Guessing it's from the late 1940s/early 1950s. It's NOT one of Universal Geneve's more fancy watches but I like it anyway. Very simple. No date and just the even numbers in a really cool font. My grandfather got it new from a friend who received it as prize from a sales contest. Anyway, would love to see a modern Polerouter or Nina Rindt.
