Well, it was until Seiko released the Seiko 5 Sports SSK GMT back in June of this year at the affordable price of $475. Not only is it easy on the bank account, but it’s a damn good-looking watch too. What else do you expect from a watch inspired by the discontinued cult classic Seiko SKX line of affordable dive watches?

It is entirely unacceptable that this watch does not have sapphire. Even orient, at lower price points, is offering sapphire crystal.
While the rest of Hodinkee is going downhill, new-guy-Brandon (that's what we call him in my head) is putting out great stuff like this. An honest and clear review from someone who sounds like he actually wore the watch for a while and is capable of holding both positive and negative opinions about it. We need more of these and less of those useless spec-sheet videos.

It doesn't matter how many watch brands I've owned, I always come back to Seiko.
Same, I have a BB58 and Speedy (2021 SS) but I always find myself wearing my SPB237 (JDM) daily. It's just soooooooo comfortable and utilitarian for everyday use.

What a load of complete nonsense. That watch would be worth considering if it cost less and had a sapphire crystal. As it is the price makes no sense whatsoever.

They need a 37-38mm too. Or at the very least, a bezeless gmt with the 40mm seiko 5 line. That would be a huge hit
I wish they’d go back to the 37/38mm watches like in the last Seiko 5 gen. I like the watch designs, but i prefer smaller bezeless watches.

Check out the 38.5mm Seiko Solar divers guys, if quartz doesn't put you off. Pretty much satisfied all my Seiko needs in small-med size (but yes, a GMT version of it would be awesome).

The only 2 things I hate is the 5 logo anywhere on the dial.. I’d just prefer a simple Seiko logo & the lack of a no date version.
That logo, and the jubilee bracelet, turned me off the watch when I went to see it in the store.
I have been wearing this watch daily for the past month and it is excellent. It was a great purchase indeed.

I always love videos made by Brandon. He’s a great addition to the Hodinkee crew. One of the things you may not have noticed is that the jubilee bracelet is upgraded from the SKX. It’s in dual finished services polished and brushed and it is a more solid constructed bracelet as well. Less jingly than the SKX. Also having solid endlinks.
I didn't realize that the bracelet is an upgrade. Thanks for the info because I realized that it was jingly when I bought it, and wasn't too happy with that. But I'm glad that it was an improvement that Seiko did
Great video that makes me love my "batman" Seiko 5 gmt even more. It's a really awesome everyday gmt watch which does look good on my wrist at a super value price

You just know when its a Brandon Vid. Well done as usual, I pulled the trigger on the orange dial version. Just fell in love with it. Happy weekend.
I picked up two of these...one blue and one orange. I like them a lot. Not expensive, and fine to travel with such that if you are robbed, it's not a huge loss like a multi-thousand dollar timepiece would be. I'm an airline pilot, the GMT feature is awesome. You can ALWAYS read GMT on the permanent inner ring, keep your home time-zone on the regular hour/minute hands, and rotate the bezel so the GMT pointer is at local time, and BOOM, you have your local (3rd) time-zone. No need to even touch the crown. Both of mine keep GREAT time so far...my blue one as I type this is only off by two seconds (slow) after 48 hours. I agree that I wish the bezel was a click-bezel, and a screw-down crown would be awesome. I don't care about the caller vs. traveller GMT, as with the permanent GMT ring inside the watch and three time-zones (most GMT watches can only track two) it meets my needs as a world traveller.
I'm sat waiting for the postman to deliver mine as I watch this.

This is the high quality content we come to see. I love week on the wrist, and Brandon brings a youthful feel to the videos. I am sure these take a lot of effort, but I would love to see one or two of these week on the wrist videos every month. They're always the perfect length too. As for the Seiko SSK GMT, this is a great release by Seiko. I personally love the blue/black, but this one is so great as well. For the bold among us, the orange/gold is an option. I have even seen these at solid discounts/on sale recently, which makes these an even better value. "Office" GMTs have their place, and I can certainly use one with my job.

I have nothing against Hodinkee, in fact I enjoy their videos a lot. But the first article I read was about “best first watches” and number one was the Omega Speedmaster😂 if only that was my first watch
I've had the SSK005 orange dial for a few months and I love it. Functionally sufficient, time, GMT hand, and date all very easy to read, wear is OK, and of course the price is quite affordable for a stylish GMT watch. Also the bezel undercuts the 42.5mm dial size quite a bit so it wears more like a 40-41mm watch. My only complaint is the frictionless bezel not having the typical "clicks" to tell that a specific time spot has been set in place, which could make reading a 3rd time zone a bit tricky.
I bought the Seiko 5 GMT when it first launch and it looks just as great as it is in pictures. I eventually sold it after a few months because the bezel kept shifting because I tend to cross my arms which then shifts the bezel. The misalignment just irk me too much.

And I really like this watch. I have an SKX, and this watch not having a screw-down crown actually bothers me less than the new Seiko 5 divers not having one. This is a GMT, I don’t expect 200m WR.
As for the jumping hour hand feature, I don’t know of any watch priced below $2000 that has it. So perfectly fine by me.

So, technical question: wouldn’t a simple reversal of the mounting of the red arrow and local hour hand make this a traveler’s GMT?
The GMT hand moves in 24 hour increments, so no. I don't think it's a big deal either way, just set the GMT hand to UTC 0 and adjust the bezel for timezone.

A youtuber I won't name said Hodinkee had become uppity and too obsessed with status symbol pieces. Then a recent Hodinkee video gushing about a $475 Seiko pops up on the side.

I had a Seiko 5 rated for 100m spent an entire day in the pool, jumped off the 3 meter diving board a number of times. Zero issues.

Interesting fact, "dive" watches are rarely used or worn during dives.
FYI clicking bezel are for divers and friction is for GMT's
For me, it's everything i want in a watch.
Put the blue dial on a navy blue silicone strap and it catapulted that watch to a 9.5/10 for me. Love it now. That bracelet sucks

These are the kind of watches this guy should be reviewing. It was a damn shame he did the FPJ CB review, it was wasted on him. Entry level is his niche.
I purchased the SSK003K1 and I love it but the hardlex is easily scratched which prompted me to look for a more durable upgrade.
Can't seem to find a sapphire replacement as of yet but will keep looking.

I just bought the Seiko SSK001 black face GMT.
It is a good watch with one terrible weakness which I hated.
Its bezel is very poorly designed as it turns very easily which makes this GMT watch useless.
Seiko made a huge mistake by NOT making the bezel a ratcheted design so it will not move (turn) so easily and mess you up.
I returned this poor and useless Seiko after just owning for one day.
Seiko must fix this terrible mistake as its bezel friction is light and turns very easily.
What was Seiko thinking when they designed this promising watch? Just terrible and stupid.
He would prefer the old Seiko 5 logo???!!!
Maybe you should look at the 1960's Seiko 5 logos... Now that is classic and better than these two versions.

You should have taken the risk and tested in the water. Worst case you pay them back 500 dollars if it fails. Obviously with that rating it will be fine. I hate when reviewers don't put the effort into what they're delivering, or passion at all. Would have made your review more complete instead of looking like a total flop and claiming you're respecting the owner. Do a real review

Love Seiko, but for $500, I better get a sapphire crystal. If you can find these for around $250-$275, then the Hardlex wouldn’t bother me as much
I've never understood why the GMT watch function works on a 24 hour basis. Yes, I know that the concept of GMT itself is a 24-hour one, amd mechanically it's very clever, but if you're overseas and you have a 12-hour secondary reading, you pretty much know whether you're AM or PM so you don't need to be thinking in 24 hours scale and rememberingthat every halfhour on the dial is really an hour . Looking at a second ring which is essentially running on a different scale to the way you read your normal time is harder than just adding or subtracting the time difference.
What I think DOES work better is a 12-hour rotatable bezel which can show you the local time at a glance.
Having said all that, I will also say that I love Seiko and it's a goodlooking watch.

Problem with Seiko 5 auto movements is the inaccuracy. For the price they wont regulate before casing them. I can't understand why Seiko won't use a good, less expensive quartz movement and dispense with the lack of accuracy. Use solar charging and eliminate battery changes.

I just don't get the GMT function. Even if I were a airline pilot I'd not seen in more usable than a timer. your phone with timezones much better for tracking time at home, it even tells you the time at home if you just press the power button. And the bezzle is just a useless gimmick most the time, or if you staying somewhere for a longer period that is a different zone you just do the most basic addition or subtraction in a second and it makes the GMT obsolete. I travel a few times a year and I'd always pick a normal diver bezzle over a GMT.
So can someone enlighten me, if I am missing something?

I have multiple time zones displayed with atomic accuracy on the home screen of my phone, along with day, date and weather. So with everyone owning a smartphone, traditional watches today are little more than functional jewelry. divers tend to strap on a dive computer unless they're in for some Cousteau-era nostalgia. I'd say go with whatever design rocks your world, as long as it keeps good time anything else is just a fidget spinner distraction.

The watch can track three time zones if you know how to do it. I can’t figure out why people freak about the lack of a screw-down crown. It’s not a dive watch. It’s for traveling. If you want a dive watch, buy a dive watch and screw the crown up and down all day long. This is not made for diving.
