My Problems With Ninji Speedruns In Super Mario Maker 2

- Back in December Super Mario Maker 2 Recieved it's first DLC update adding in many new features like spike, pokeys, and link. With this update also came a new mode called ninji speedruns. While I think the concept behind ninji speedruns is good nintendo has been doing a poor job of executing it correctly in my opinion. So Today I discuss my problems with the ninji speedrun mode in mario maker 2 along with some solutions. On top of that I'll also be ranking the 4 levels we have right now from worst to best (Being Rolling Snowballs, The Speedventure of Link, The 10-Coin In The Deep Woods, and Cat Mario Dash)

I agree with a lot of the points you've made, and I hope Nintendo provides some fixes to the problems you addressed in this video in a future update. I enjoyed this video a lot! However, I have a couple corrections to some of the statements you made:
There actually hasn't been much change in the amount of players since the second Ninji. The footprint count keeps updating after the event ends, so it makes sense that the oldest Ninji levels would have the most plays. Also, Nintendo does not choose the times for Gold/Silver/Bronze stars beforehand, Gold is always top 10% of players rounded to the nearest second, Silver top 30%, and Bronze top 50%. This isn't mentioned anywhere, just something we've found by looking at the final rankings.

Yoyo 6:03 Notice the hump on “The Speedventure Of Link”. The average times were raised here and then less people made faster times up until the 33~ second mark. The amount of slow times being from 1:58 to 0:50 warranted an easy gold medal. the average good time was easier to obtain because of way slower times.

I have a suggestion: The ninji rewards should come from how many stars you've got, that way everyone actually tries to reach for the gold stars. Getting the Ninji outfits would be faster, and if the recon badge was also counted, you could progress 4 points each event.
5:28 I was really disappointed about that one because I grinded for hours to get gold, then found out I didn't have to do any of it, and don't get credit for my time. (It was 28sec) also, #drybones4smash
The times for medals aren't pre-chosen. They are in some way related to the times the people who played got. You'll notice on the levels where the graph has a large mountain on the very right, the medals were much more compressed (such as the snow level). The levels where times are a lot more evenly distributed (such as the link level) the medals were a lot more spread out.

I 100% agree that world records should be viewable. Sure you can find videos of really good times on TH-cam, but that's not really the point.
Kenneth Ligutom That's a good point, but what I have in mind isn't a Ninji.
After the speedrun is over you can already race the top times, but that's useless if you aren't on world record pace already because the Ninji is always off screen.
I think there should just be an anonymous video, much like on TH-cam, where you can watch the world record without playing.
I don't think it would kill exploration either, because top runners would still be looking to optimize the route.
It would be even more harmless if Nintendo only added the video option near the end of a speedrun period. By then, most serious runners are only competing to shave off milliseconds anyway, so it would give casual players a better chance at a decent time and more interest in the game mode as a whole.

I liked how spaced out the spectrums used to be. Now, they release them very often and it feels like they're pushing it too much, instead of keeping it as a side mode.
I want a new ninji speedrun level
I'd like to be able to see the WR, But I'd also like to see a 'personal best' Ninji to race. Maybe have it a different color to distinguish your own best time from the other Ninji.
the gold stars problem is so true. on the recent ninji speedrun (Headgear Hustle) I got 29.5 seconds which was like #6500 in the rankings, the world record was around 25 seconds and the gold star time was about 35 seconds so I believe that they should make it harder to obtain gold stars
My favourite speedrun level as of now is probably the most recent one. Balloon race. It felt the best designed for fast movement & quick reflexes. The challenge level was well scaled & the speed was just right. I was actually able to get gold on this course, making it the first speedrun I ranked in the top 10% on. This has been the most fun one for me so far.

Splatoon 2 salmon run was only once every 6 hours in a day when the game was released, now it is basically all the time. I hope the same thing happens for ninji speedruns.

This video doesn't really take into consideration that most of the players are kids. Complaining about the easiness of getting gold stars isn't really something Nintendo is going to change without major community feedback. I however kinda agree that the top 1000 or smth should get the gold stars, but since the player count is getting lower, I think like top 10-5% would do it better. I would also want platinum stars (4 stars) for the top 1% and special stars for top 3, something that most kids will never reach but I think gold stars should be reachable with some skill by them.

I don’t know because I don’t have Nintendo online so now I only have a small portion of a game which is story mode and building levels that nobody can play because I can’t post them unless I pay 20 dollars a year for a subscription to play online much like the PlayStation and Xbox.

Great video ! One problem though, isn't the gold time already set by the time players get ? I mean, profile medals are earned when being, iirc, in the top 10000. Based on the data I took while running Cat Mario dash (Every time I beat my record I'd write my time and my ranking) it seems like the gold medal was awarded to around 10k to 20k players, the rankings changed a bit towards the end so I can't be more precise than that.
To me, that seems pretty fair already, though I agree that making it 5000 would be better and more challenging.
Givrally I’m unsure, this could very well be the case it’s just hard to test this sort of stuff. I definitely think they should make it harder nonetheless
@@Odyssey_Central I'm not sure if anyone has done pixel measurements of the bar graph, that's probably the safest bet to find out how the gold time is chosen.
In any case, yeah, it's too damn easy. Considering that the competition for profile medals is between all mario maker 2 players and that the competition for ninji speedruns is much smaller, if both are decided by the top 10k, they have a wholly different value.
I really enjoy the mode. I agree they should be more often, nice video. :)
My problem with that, is we don't know how long the guys at Nintendo spent working on the ninji levels that they already have (this includes the not yet released ones). Sure, they could have released them once a week like this guy clearly seems to think they should be, but if they spent a month on each level working out the multiple paths and making it doable enough that easy or normal level players can beat it but challenging enough that top tier players still have to work and grind to get those top times, then they'd have a handful of weeks to work on the next one they haven't already made, and after that, have a week to build and test the next one and everyone after that. This happens, and I see either a drop in quality or repetition in the level designs to pump out great levels in a week's time.
There will always be a catch 22 on something like this but I really don't think that limiting them to an extremely strict timeframe is the answer

The star rankings are judged by the player's times and how many plays so if there is less ninji players (Which is happening), it would be easier to get gold.

What does the wr have to do with the time required for gold stars? Not every player is gonna get close to the world record. The time is based general skill level. That means they don’t want to make it way too hard for noobs to get bronze, or average runners to get silver. The only reason they are easy, is because if they weren’t they would be no fun, and also because the people getting the gold stars have played the levels (most of the time) more than 100 tries.
My biggest problem with Ninji Speedrun is that you can’t actually place Ninji’s and have them work like in Mario 2 and Mario Run in your courses.

I think it should be by percentage, not top "amout of people", the more people have Mario Maker 2, the worst it gets to be on top nowadays, so this could be more fair, so let's say, gold if you're on the top 1%, silver on the top 5% and bronze on the top 10%
I’m not good at grinding my time down, I also take my time and make stupid mistakes, but I still get Bronze! Plus it takes me at least 5 tries to beat the actual level.
