Even me as a half ethnicity of Phattalung & Songkhla, maybe can’t handle that southern feast. Lol! How can you eat all of spicy dishes with out หมูหวาน or ไข่ดาว or some แกงจืด.
I also like to eat those currys with Khanom jeen noodles. I like to eat those southern currys when they are very spicy.oo man plara is my favorite fish, especially when they fry it crispy and with fish sauce, lime and chili's .. I also prefer to eat isan there is much more flavor to it…but what you mean by plara is the sauce, the water in which the plara (fish) is fermented, but I also like that plara liquid, they do that in sumtam..love that stuff.
I didn't even know plara was a fish, I though they used catfish and snakehead to make the liquid plara? I just can't eat it raw. I know it's all in my head as I eat it in soup!
@@theroamingcook ,,maybe it's because I've been eating it since I was only in my twenties and didn't ask what was in the food, now over 30 years later it's normal food for me, and have you tasted pladijk yet, that's it same as plara but with worms from the fermentation, well I eat that too 🤗😂
Gaeng Tai Pla - Pass for me, i feel this is much more than a dish and connected culturally in a way we don't have the same connection, In the way I don't understand the eating of juices from the 3rd stomach of a cow in Issan, Yes I tried it, did I enjoy, no and this with a fair bit of dutch courage post service at 2am in the morning following a night of boozing. Same with Bile not great and def no used in a semi or cooked laap, the smell hits you before the taste.
Yes definitely something cultural that we farangs will never understand. Like baked beans maybe! But yeah, bile is absolutely foul. I cannot take anyone seriously that says they enjoy it!

Hey Gary, just discovered your channel randomly while looking up info on Trat, must say, love your videos. Love that you focus on street food, and enjoy your presentation style. I find lots of food bloggers kind of off-putting, trying really too hard or too over the top (i.e. like Weins), but you do a great job and your passion for the food shows, please keep up the good work. Anyways, I'm not writing to just kiss your ass, I have a suggestion - as a frequent visitor to Thailand (8 times over the last 25 years), I've learned to plan out most of my days in Bangkok by rail station. Motorbike is really not an option for me in Bangkok, and Taxi's are too unpredictable with the traffic. So I mostly plan out what I want to do, then see what MRT or BTS stations I need to access, then look up what food options I can get to near those stations. I feel like most people plan their time the same way in Bangkok. What would be great is if there was some way to find your bangkok videos by rail station. Maybe it's just a matter of putting on hashtags (#MRT-BangWa), or what might even be better is if you have a single google map with custom pins for all your reviews. Not sure what the best answer is, just a suggestion on a use case that might be helpful for your viewers. Anyways, keep up the great work, can't wait till I get back to Thailand again and hit up some of the restaurants in your videos!
Hey Kevin, I’m so happy you’ve found the channel and are enjoying the videos. I really like your idea, I was actually going to try and do a series where I show places to eat at every BTS and MRT station but wasn’t sure anyone would be into it. I’ll definitely look into updating my current videos with the hashtags for the relevant stations and see if it works. Thanks for the suggestion, it’s nice to have some constructive feedback!
I'm from BKK so growing up I used to hate Pla ra as people from BKK don't eat much of it, it was disgusting (the smell, the taste, everything about it). But I've grown to love it over the years. Now Pla ra is my favorite!! 555
They are from Phatthalung so maybe PFC! But there is some good friend chicken in the market nearby. It's hard to get proper legit Hat Yai fried chicken in BKK
Lotus in Thai is (Bua) if I remember correctly. My Thai is slowly fading away as I have had few Thais to speak with for nearly two years in self-isolation. Hope to remedy that situation soon but with this evil virus circling the planet and flights being canceled by the thousands every day my chances are looking grim at this time.
Yes that’s it, bua is definitely lotus! I think Sandbox in Phuket is the only viable option going forward for the foreseeable. I really hope you can make it back out soon!
Hi Gary, I see that you like salty food, but please try not to eat too much, ok? My mother ate too much salty food, which led to high blood pressure, which led to her having stroke, TWICE. The 2nd one was massive, and she is now unable to walk, talk or eat on her own. She is on a feeding tube. I am not trying to ruin your parade, Gary, just a bit concern. The content is awesome, as usual, and I am so impressed that you are eating Pla Rah just for us. Bravo!
Thank you for your concern Panna and I’m so, so sorry to hear about your mum, that’s terrible ❤️ I do counteract the food by cooking my own every night thankfully. Lots of vegetables too but I do worry too! I’m just sorry that I could eat the plara properly. I will get there soon!
Ow-dip(ออดิบ) is the southern name of khuun(as coon in raccoon) it's called green taro or indian taro in English. it's quite srcay for me to eat this plant because there's a poisonous plant called hora(โหรา) that looks exactly like khuun in layman's eyes, and you could die an agony death if you eat the wrong plant.

Even me as a half ethnicity of Phattalung & Songkhla, maybe can’t handle that southern feast. Lol! How can you eat all of spicy dishes with out หมูหวาน or ไข่ดาว or some แกงจืด.
Haha I did have some soup but didn’t record it! It was all quite spicy
Very nice 👍 sharing my dear respected friend full support and big likes from Ahmed Ali Nizamani
Thank Ahmed, I really appreciate the support! 🙏🙏
@@theroamingcook ,,maybe it's because I've been eating it since I was only in my twenties and didn't ask what was in the food, now over 30 years later it's normal food for me, and have you tasted pladijk yet, that's it same as plara but with worms from the fermentation, well I eat that too 🤗😂
Au dib or however it’s spelt are taro root stems
Yes Jono, you are correct 👍
“An acquired taste I haven’t managed to acquire yet” 😂 😂 😂
Brilliant Gary, as always.
Hahahahh, cheers mate 🙏❤️
The odd taro-like veg might be what the Filipinos call gabi that they use in sinigang
Yeah I think it’s the same after looking at a picture!
I really missed Thai food. The darn Covid ruined everything. 😒 hopefully I can go back in 2023.
Oh no, where are you? Can you not fly? 😭
@@theroamingcook I am stills working so I don't have enough PTO to come to Thailand and spend my time quarantine instead of roaming around. I usually spend a month in Thailand every 2 years or so. Last time I was in Thailand January 2020 Covid-19 just started to break out. I am in California working for defense so it is a bit hassle to go out of the country at time like this.
Yeah I don't blame you Lisa, it's such hard work travelling at the moment! I think it's about to get a lot harder to get to Thailand as well. One day you'll be back! 🙏
Are these dishes noemally hot, or just lukewarm?
The southern place will be like warm unless they’ve just cooked it. The second place will be hit as it’s cooked to order
much prefer salty sour spicy to sweet
Definitely Scott!
The thing “like taro” was probably taro stems 😉
Same family Dan but it’s not taro! I’ve found the name, I’ll post it up
🙏
🙏🙏🙏🙏
I'm from BKK so growing up I used to hate Pla ra as people from BKK don't eat much of it, it was disgusting (the smell, the taste, everything about it). But I've grown to love it over the years. Now Pla ra is my favorite!! 555
So there is hope for me yet! I will keep trying to eat eat it. It must be in my head because I eat it in soup!
Isaan is the best💙🇹🇭
Number 1 🌶🇹🇭♥️
Think I’ll just stick to blue cheese. Great video though. Doesn’t sound great but then again neither does haggis when you tell people what’s in it.
Hahaha, yeah me too mate. Don't let me put you off though, it's all in my head mate!
Any Hat Yao fried chicken there?
They are from Phatthalung so maybe PFC! But there is some good friend chicken in the market nearby. It's hard to get proper legit Hat Yai fried chicken in BKK
Southern food is too spicy for me, I can't eat that curry. I give up!! LOL
But I love Isan food. " Lap moo, Lap ped, Komoo yang and fried chicken.
Haha, maybe I was from the south in a previous life 😅
Lotus in Thai is (Bua) if I remember correctly.
@@theroamingcook Bua is also a beautiful little town in northern Nam province.
@@theroamingcook Thanks for the kind words, Gary. As for Pla rah, it definitely is the mental thing, but at least you tried. 🤣
You’re knowledge is on point as always 😀
I'm almost sure that you shit yourself after every vid you make for us... :)) thanks mate !
Sometimes during but I stay professional 😅
Just try Kang Tai Pla in vegetarian version it will not have the Tai Pal (fish kidneys) smell
Thanks, I’ll try it if I can find it. I can eat Tai Pla, it’s just not my favourite. I mix it with nam ya sometimes to take the edge off 😅
25:24 what happens spicy ?
Not spicy just cannot eat plara very well 🤦♂️
@@theroamingcook 🤭😁you can say no plara if you can not eat🤣
I asked for extra 😂 I need to eat it to be real Thai 😂😂😂
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻⚘

That vegetable that was in the geang som is a taro stem. It’s very fibrous. I can’t eat it.
Thank you! It was really delicious. Like a sponge for the soup
😄
กินคู่กับเบียร์หรือว่าเหล้านะอร่อยโคตร

Taro stems in the gang som
Yes mate. Not something I was familiar with but can’t stop eating them now!
