Man ppl are crazy. These aren't even the best NBA players representing the states lol. Think about it there was starters for the USA that weren't even all stars in the NBA. They did good. Imagine the starting 5 of Steph, Devin,, Bron, KD, and AD with a bench of Kyrie or Ja, Ant Ed, Kawhi(who could start),PG or a healthy Zion and Ayton. Easy gold medal undefeated. That's the difference between today's players and the 90's players, the best from the 90's and early 2000's made sure to represent their country.

@@johnmcm7690 Yes but they played Powell & Olynyk together which made them big- at least in illusion. Plus, they had Zach Edey off then bench who is 7’4.
The equivalent to that in the USA would have been the US starting Jaren Kackson Jr & Bobby Portis(notice how much bigger that would already have made us look). And Walker Kessler off the bench (7’1).
In my opinion, the US lost because of bad coaching.

As a Canadian and longtime bball fan ( over 55 years- age 68) I was pleased with the efforts of both Team USA and Team Canada. I am disappointed with the reaction of many Americans to the performance of Team USA. These mostly young men came off a long season and within a short period of time attended training to prepare and played hard in the tournament. Some of them will be future MVPs and even one day Hall of Fame , and there is not one of them that the whiners would not want to be a member of their local NBA team. Both Team Canada and Team USA face the challenge that they have been raised with the NBA game and trained in the NBA game which is different than the FIBA game in terms of rules, strategy and the tolerance of the officials for violations/physical defence ( Note- let us not pretend the NBA refs do not have a quiet directive from the league to grant fouls to many players and to hold their whistle ). The European teams and their coaches will have an edge with respect to those matters and because of the length of the NBA season the players of Team Canada and Team USA are presented with a challenge to adjust within a short time because of the length of the season. Granted key players on the European teams also play in the NBA and have long seasons ( Luka, Giannis, Jokic et al) but at least some of them have a continuity with the teammates on their national teams ( which is a good thing ). Both Team Canada and Team USA would benefit if it was a requirement that no player would be considered for the Olympic team unless they participate in at least one FIBA tournament as a member of Team USA. Hopefully most of the young men who participated in this tournament will get to be on the Olympic teams. In the meantime , it is a good thing for the sport that the talent gap has closed but the USA will always be the favorite because of the sheer depth of the talent pool albeit there will be 2-4 other National teams that will have the potentiol of winning during the knock out stages.

Some basic information regarding the german national team:
Coach Herbert started in September 2021, on a two year deal, with an option for one more year, if the national team qualified for the Olympics.
He made the controversial decision to not nominate the team captain Robin Benzing for the european championship in 2022, even though parts of it was played in germany and there was a lot of pressure on him to nominate him as a token of respect.
That decision, along with naming Dennis Schröder co-captain, made Schröder the clear teamleader.
there are seven players still active from the last olympic team, but both Franz Wagner and Dennis weren't part of that team.

@@exilhamburger4802 it all comes down to style of play and Europe has improved a ton over the last 20 years. In general, European teams and players are more adept fitting into a team role, whereas these guys on the US team are used to being the alpha or second option. The talent is still in the US, but that gap has shrunk. Now they need to figure out how to play together. When you put together a bunch of all stars on one team everyone needs to sacrifice, but almost none of them have experience playing off-ball/role player position. That’s why guys like Reaves and Ant performed well. Reaves role was very similar to what it is in LA and Ant was looked to be the primary scoring option like he is (should be) in Minnesota. Also, there wasn’t one player for the US who has played international competition at this level. Listening to you gentlemen talk about the USA apparent shock lost, is quite frankly a smoke screen for what the real issue is, it is the US development system. there is none, the game of basketball isn't just about having talent or athletic ability, there is the very real issue that american bred players are fast tracked because of just a few facets of the game. The concept of team work is almost alien, a simple thing like boxing out is not taught to youth players, multiple actions are like a foreign concept to americans because they are so busy showing their individual skills. but if you look at youth development in europe and basically anywhere outside of the US, there is a pyramid system, where players are measured not just on the personal abilities but how they play with other players. unfortunately the greed of coaches in the AAU far outways their requirement to build programs where players are actually filtered on their true qualities as a basketball player, as an example in europe far more stock is made of a players efficiency rating!

In Tokyo I don't think the americans brought all their a list guys too! A lot of stars refuse to play in the olympics for the US and eventually it'll cost them in the olympics. Moreover, because the play style in the US is moviing towards small ball the true american centers disappear. The best 3 american bigs are AD, Bam and KAT. KAT plays for the domincan republic, AD won an olympic gold in 2012 and doesn't seem to be intrested or healthy enough to play in another olympics while Bam is a small ball center. The best bigs are international are there's an overrepresentation of international players at the center position because playing center is forbidden in the US. In order to fill that gap the US would need to bring in a few role players like Brook Lopez, Myles turner and Jarrett Allen like they did in previous years. The US is going to win the perimeter battle every game but in FIBA that's not as determining factor as in NBA game. In FIBA the court's smaller, the defense is mor physical and teams play 40 minutes of intense defense. That gets under the skin of a lot of american players who are used to have space to operate and calls go their way. Serbia was in the final of the World Cup without the best player in the world on their roster, greece was top 8 without giannnis. The US is going to have to sacrifice on some perimieter talent to bring 3 quality bigs to Paris.
