Those intelligent Lithuanians playing Reaves like no one did before them, stop trying to tap our national teams back for doing their homework. Reaves defensives inefficiencies ware exploited even in NBA also and it's no ground breaking concept.
Now as far as the USA national team goes, they did not even look like they wanted it, so combine it with bad habits created by NBA rules (that you point out) and here you get the outcome.

Yup. I think you missed to mention their program. That's one of the reasons why no one fears the USA anymore. They don't have a good program of retaining their players. I mean they have the money, it's not like the US is lacking in funds, why not pay the players enormous amounts of money. Say their contract is worth 50million, then divide that with the number of training days, games played, etc. And offer them that, so that at least they'd still not lose out. We all know most players right now aren't really about pride but more for money. This is also the reason why the dunk contest and their other events don't have stars playing or participating in them, they don't incentivize the players. Yeah it's honor, but do you really have to declare contracts like that especially since most of these players have a social media following and would look down on them for being petty for money, but being real, that's all there is to it right?
Another thing is continuation of coaching. What happened to the teachings of Mike? His proteges didn't learn anything from him? It's like they're forcing the NBA game into the world games when it's totally different. I remember in the redeem team documentary that Mike said that they had to adjust, the world won't adjust to them. To me that's a great philosophy that all teams should apply (I would love the Philippines to adopt this too, but greed prevents it from happening). It's like the US forgot that

In Europe the focus is on studying the fundamentals, defense and team play. In the United States the emphasis is on turning players into super-athletes who jump, run and dunk. It's not a coincidence that Kobe once said that American kids don't learn the fundamentals of the game and he only learned them because he grew up in Italy.

And it makes sense from a promotional standpoint, because the press has an easier time focusing on the individual skill, and creating those storylines and legends around them as the big stars they want them to be seen as by the fans. ESPN is especially great at creating that propaganda stuff. And they are already starting up the whole machinery for Wembanyama as we speak. The product on the floor of course gets weaker as we are seeing from the last 10 years or so, but not everyone might see it as such, especially casual fans who are often clueless to the intricacies of the sport and only root for a team to have a good time.

Jokić is a top 3 player today when it comes to strength. There isn't a single player he can't back down all the way. Not even Adams or Embiid can stop him, and those are the strongest guys alongside Jokić.

Thanks for the video! I think the main difference between the NBA and Europe is the mentality of the game. For better or worse the NBA is entertainment, like going to a movie, rather than a competitive sport. They want constant action and like American movies everything has to be very fast and spectacular, lots of points, lots of dunks, nobody wants to see a game ending 58-62. And I think that mentality also gets to the players, of course they all want to win, but they also know that if they lose it's not the end of the world. The fans will still pay hundreds of dollars for a seat in the next match, their team is not going to be relegated anyway and life goes on. Compare that with a derby game in Greece, Serbia, or Turkey for example and the atmosphere between the two. There you have to win, even if it's an ugly win and you'll have to make fouls, you'll have to be aggressive in defence and stop the other guy from scoring, even if you don't score. I don't think that many NBA players have that frame of mind.

NBA regular season basketball isn’t professional sports. It’s just a fancy pick up game with a huge amount of talent but majorily lacking in fundamentals.
The reason why the heat were able to get to the finals as an 8th seed is proof of that. Even the better regular season teams lack fundamentals which gets exposed in the playoffs. Take for example my favorite team, the celtics. They are supposed to be ”the most talented team” (whatever that means) but they get exposed in the playoffs all the time in many different areas for the lack of discipline on how they play.

But the big difference to European basketball is that Europe is always defined by the team. and that in all sports. And that doesn't suit American basketball. Because this franchise system and the salary cap are also the big problem there. In Europe we learn how to use even the weakest member most effectively. Because everyone can do something very well somewhere. When I think about the USA building a Eurobasketball team... that would be a nightmare for everyone. there will be some sort of "social information" going on (e.g. modelling oneself on the currently best teams) but in general it is very likely that they know why they wanna play like this and why it works. i mean its less spicey to say than "americans bad, no boxout lul" but its probably a better description of "the world", if you find a reason that argues on the basis of them doing something right.

thanks to NBA's success we have more international player in the NBA indeed one argument has been the number of white american players has diminished as they now can get reasonably athletic europeans that can shoot the ball.
It is also clear that in the US shooting & ball movement is is not prized as much as athleticism and ball handling.
It s often taught differently, we teach that basketball is a passing game and it feels like in the uS it is taught as a dribbling game
it means that even superstars in euroleague pass the ball and do not score loads of points even when dominating where as in the NBA player routinely now go for 30 40 and even 50 is now harly celebrated.
it is a style thing and I suspect even if the NBA adopted FIBA rules that style thing would not change if your best players all learn to play a certain style in order to get noticed ( you have high schooler with mixtapes of highlights) you are not going to get 10 player that can play without the ball 10 player that value defence, these guys are prima donnas before you get to tip off of their first year of basketball at kindergarten.
Now would the most talented be any better ? yes but lets be honest how often do you see Lebron or KD boxing out?
the reality is these guys are not scary because teams now want to play them and beat them and not collect their autographs so whilst there is a bigger talent pool and often better athleticism in the US it does not always translate into better basketball

So the US is actually limiting their talent pool by disrespecting white ballers. Here’s a stereotype white guy - shooter, soft, weak handles, get up on him. Well not so with Serbia, Lithuania and Spain. By contrast Germany of all countries best player is a black guy. Even Montenegro has a Black guy.

It's too much offense now. Now, I don't wanna go back completely to the 90s and especially the 00s with really no ball movement and solely focused on defense, but remember the Pistons? They were really good, they didn't iso much, moved the ball and are still amazing at defense, so were the Spurs.
Switching is good, but you gotta know your personnel. Before during the redeem team, they can switch all they want because they had great centers and forwards like Dwight and Bosh who were monsters on the board and still know how to box out. Also, GSW can do that because they have tall, athletic, and defensive driven wings and Dray during his peak can defend almost anybody. Like the video said, JJJ is a DPOY but his defensive style is a roamer, he's not a straight up defender like Bosh, Dwight, nor Dray was. Also Banchero is the worst defensive player they could have and he was positioned as the center? The position where usually is the last line of defense?
Sorry but Kerr and Hill became just like Chot Reyes (Philippines coach) who never really is famous for adjustments. If anything instead of Kerr, Spoelstra could've made more of a difference with this team since his philosophy aligns much more with the great coaches like Mike, Pop, and the likes who are great at adjusting their coaching style depending on the personnel he has, we all know Kerr was never like that and never will be. To me, Kerr is just like any other regular coach in an unknown highschool gym, sorry. But we've seen that he's just carried by his team, yeah he made changes when he coached GSW to implement Dray more, but aside from that what else has he really done without Steph, Klay, and Dray? We've seen this with Luke Walton. He was a great coach there but anywhere else he's been subpar.

I see a lot of confusion in the comments. We all agree Team Usa was the most talent in the world and they didn't deserve to win because they play badly. But why did it happen? These guys (youngest team in the tournament) was formed just one month before the start of the WC cup. How do you build tactics, identity and chemistry in one month with just 4 friendly matches and then jump in a though competion like the WC. Then they have to get use to the different rules and the style of play, which may decrese the jmpact of some players (like JJJ or Brunson). Do not underestimate the impact of 3 sec rules. It totally changes the game. Many times you could see USA players forgetting they could send help more freely than the NBA. With all that said, i think it's clear why they play badly, with lack of movement and a ton of isolation.
Secondly, do not overlap team usa with NBA teams. They dont play like that. Simply watch last playoffs. Denver, Boston, Miami, Warriors, Sacramento etc... played with pace, space, movement and they played according to principles and ideas. Of course they play with different style than European leagues. I find at least 3 reasons... 1) different rules, 2) different interpretation of the rules, 3) different talent (way more different to play schematically against Tatum-Brown, rather than Avramovic-Guduric). NBA teams have at least 20 assistant coaches for each team. They study and analyze with incredible amount of data. Do not think they are just casuals who are at that level because they watch just games in tv. They are prepared.
Thirdly, I watched the WC final. Very good basketball game, but Germany (who won) played with an american style (also coach Trinchieri said it during the commentary on Dazn). I dont find a lot of differences with an nba playoff game (kf course with different rules, but with the same attention to details and force).
In conclusion... to make a fair comparison you have to take into accounts all these multiple variables before just stating that "Nba sucks" "they dont play defense" "european teams are now better" "we play with the right respect if the game"... just stupid. Watch games, study, analyze, reflect, dont be superficial.

@@TMPOUZI Yes boxing out is basic, but when you are used to playing in a league where counters are fundamental and generate the best point per possessions, you tend to not attack the basket to get an offensive rebound because you have to run back asap. Players get used to it and when they go in FIBA they suffer this approach. We need always to contestualize. It's not always 1:1 even though it's the same sport. The final WC was a good game, but not great tactically. NBA finals were great last year, lot of great offensive and defensive possessions by both sides. IMO way better. Then NBA finals were 5 games, not 1. Different coaching and preparing for max 7 games than 1.

Although in some situations they seemed to much to handle on both sides for everyone. Problem of USA NT is their lack of programming. For years they thought that summing up talent was sufficient for winning, but now (in all sports, not only basket) you need to work constantly with players to build ideas and principles. Serbia had that, Germany had that, Lithuania had that etc... Canada and Usa didn't build that. They were leaning on talent too much and lost, but one month to create a team is not enough. Problem is, you never even had a team. You always send 12 guys, who had met 3 weeks before the tournament. Most of the EU teams, with minor changes, play together for years. They know each other well, and that is the key to the game of basketball. Superior individual talent will just not be enough. Even in 1992, Yugoslavia (if we did not had bigger joy in killing each other), I think we would win against the original Dream team, if you ask me. That team was superior, but had no real competition. If there was another real good opponent with real tactics instead of replacing 5 with another 5, as you did all the time, Dream team would suffer heavily casualties, leading to an uncertain ending. Back to just finished WC: you had nocenter in your team apart from KEssler, who was not even playing. In all 3 loses, you had less rebounds then the opponent and somehow you were just not guarding the paint, even though FIBA rules have no 3 second rule for defending the paint. In all 3 loses you received over 110 points, a scarily huge number for FIBA basketball. You have no hierarchy, not now, not in 1992 (which was also impossible due to huge superstar ego of every single of your 11 players). Hierarchy is otherwise is notable in NBA basketball, don't get me wrong here. But if you send 12 superstars to the next Olympics, which will again make it impossible to establish any order within the team. And you will be beaten again, if EU teams come complete. Also, you do not even have any real dominant power forwards any more. They are mostly from EU. This is the 1st position you will be dominated instantly.

Sorry, but I refuse to believe that Andreas Obst is even on the same level of shooting guard as someone like Deving Booker. Let's be real, if the FIBA world cup actually mattered like an NBA ring to these players, there wouldn't be any competition.

@@nickklavdianos5136 Americans underestimate the talent pool of other countries. They believe anyone who do not make it to NBA, including American players playing in Europe, are shit. Dont forget that while Team USA with NBA stars finished 7th in 2002 and 2018 championship, a Team USA with European experience and NCAA student athletes won a bronze in 1998. NCAA preaches team oriented plays. Europe is basically the second chance for NBA rejects coming out of NCAA, and those Americans who play in Europe are no scrubs too.

@@I_FUCKING_HATE_TH-cam you aren't wrong, but look, for the last few Olympics, when the best American players actually bother to come and play, you barely won against France and Spain. A couple more missed shots and you'd not have won gold. It's close man, and other teams know that. Back in the day the difference in talent was larger, so everyone thought that playing against the USA was a foregone conclusion. But then things changed. Team USA started loosing. Games were not blowouts anymore, but close run affairs. So the other teams now know they have a chance. Team USA is still the best team on paper. It has the best talent. It's the heavyweight favourite. But basketball isn't played on paper. It's played on the court. And on the court, upsets can happen. Especially when Americans play iso and lackluster defense and haven't developed chemistry as a team.

The only thing I disagree with in the video is that it's ok to not care about anything else other than the gold. It's perfectly normal that the US would aim for the gold in every competition given that they generally have the much stronger roster, but sports in general and especially the Olympics are about giving your best and improve yourself as an individual and as a team, and if that best translates to a silver or gold medal, be proud of it

This is no C team , despite what American commentators want you to believe. It's a team made of all-stars, the defensive player of the year and a bulging superstar in Anthony Edwards. Admitedly, it's not the A listers. It's not Lebron, Durant and Curry. But in 08 and 12 the A team (who also included peak Kobe Bryan and D Wade) had to go 8 gear to beat the Gasols and their FIBA bois. The greatest assemble of players ever put together bar the 92 Dream Team didn't roll over a tightly packed FIBA team containing only one superstar.
What makes you think that the same team, 16 years later, where all these A listers are pushing 40 years old and haven't had an NBA MVP for a decade are going to roll over these FIBA superstars like Jokic Serbia, the Antetokumpos in Greecem a French team with Embiid and Wenbayama, this very Germany team or a Spain with this year's rookies already greased up and their point guards back in health. Yes of course US team is still a favourite. But not THE favourites. They're one team among 8.
