How do you interpret the frame data for strings/combo attacks? Like a "113" combo? How does the start up, block, and on-hit advantage relate to this combo string compared to the frame data for, say, a F3 command normal?
Respekk great question! So you go to your single moves list to get frame data for first attack. Say the string is 113. Startup for 1 is 10 frames. Then go to your combos and look up 11. The frames listed there will be for the SECOND hit. Then go to 113, the frames listed there will be for the THIRD hit. And so on. Does that answer your question? :)
Awesome vid! So would it be fair to say that if you wanted to punish someone after you've successfully blocked their attack we'd just use the start up frame data for the first basic move in a combo string? Am trying to find the best combo to punish people but am not too sure which start up frame data to read (basic or combo). It seems that looking through the basic attack's start up frame data and finding the input with the shortest start up frame is the best way to decide what move i should use after a successful block to punish the enemy. If that's the case what's the purpose of the startup frame data for combos if you've successfully inputed the first input button and will eventually finish the combo? So for example: 111 is the combo with a frame data listed as 20 (from blue beetle's combo attacks). Since the listed frame is listed for the final input would we just need to look up 1 (from blue beetle's basic attacks) to determine whether we should use that particular starting input for the combo? TL;DR: Which start up frame data do we use to determine what is the best punishable combo after a successful block. The startup frame for the first input of a combo (under menu's basic attacks heading) or the overall startup frame data for the combo (under menu's combo attacks heading)?
you are correct sir! 1 for the first hit, 11 for the second hit, and 111 for the third hit. this will also help you know when its safe to cut a combo short if you want to try to stagger pressure
I'm already familiar with frame data but i'm here for 3 things 1. You can never learn too much 2. It's cool to see dink teaching, you can see he enjoys it 3. #CleavagePower
I've been playing fighting games for years. i think i was 5 when i first picked up mk2. i've always loved fighting games but never could get the understanding to get myself to the next level. just wanted to say i'm super fortunate for coming upon your channel and really appreciate videos like these
These videos are great for someone like me. I haven't played a fighting game since mortal kombat 1 and 2 when I was a child because I never thought I liked them. I just happen to be a big DC comics fan so I got this on that basis alone and I am obsessed. Nearly 200 hours in and I show no signs of slowing down but the mechanics are all foreign to me and you do a good job teaching stuff that will really help me out.
For the first time on youtube, I can say without a doubt you have earned a sub from me and I'm sure you have earned every other one. This video, as well as a few others have been incredibly helpful and you seem genuinely interested in making these videos. Look forward to seeing more!
Even though I knew pretty much what frame data was, I never understood how you would determine what "+3 on block" meant in a way of how would I determine what I could follow up with afterwards. But this helped tremendously and now I've figured it out thanks to the way you described it! Thanks a bunch.
This is probably the most useful video ever. Been dying to learn about frame data. Gonna take this information to become a better player. Thanks Dink!!!!
I just wanted to say thst your guides have been the biggest aide in helping me learn this game. I've gone from not knowing what to do into being decent. Thanks so much for the help!
Thanks dude! This is my first fighting game so I'm out here trynna grind, this video was really helpful. I'll probably have to watch it a couple times though haha
Injustice 2 is my first fighting game and needless to say i'm getting rocked online lol, definitely looking forward to seeing what combos you discover for characters because i need to find someone to One-trick with. dropping a sub! Gj.
@River To be fair, I had to rewatch this a few times to fully understand it. Especially since I've never even heard about frame data before. So it's understandable why he doesnt completely understand yet.
No such thing as a stupid question! Depends on the character you pick, ones that provide good defense are useful. If you're playing a power character like superman strength buffs are helpful
How do you know what combos into what? Say I use a move that has 10 hit adv, and the next move i have has 8 start up, does that mean the second move will combo with the first?
Yo bro, I run Batman and I can never punish Super Girl or Captain Cold when they do their down 3 or down 3 into special. I've had the game since it came out. Been in practice mode trying to figure it out til this day. Also did tournaments in MKX and Injustice 1 and I still don't know which one of my moves I can use to counter their down 3. Its very frustrating. I took 3 days off until I had the right set of mind to hop back on the game, and I still lose a lot to those characters.
hey this may be a loaded question, but I hope you can answer it. what do you do if someone keeps using "safe" moves? how are you ever supposed to punish? what can you do against people that spam safe combos?
Great video dink! Quick question. If my block advantage on a move is lets say 10 frames and the opponent blocked then any move under or equal 10 frames should punish that move IMMEDIATELY post blocking. Is that correct? Or does it mean that the opponent can't do anything no matter how fast their move is for 10 frames?
I know this video is old but i seriously need your help. How do you use your frame traps when the game makes your character recover extremely fast? The timing is too strict and i never press the buttons on time. How do you do spot when your character animation has recovered on positive moves on block? Please respond if you can. I really hope you can help.
unfortunately every move has a different recovery which makes it really hard to tell for sure. I usually go into practice mode, set the ai to block, and try different timings to see how soon after my last move I can press a button. i keep trying to get it closer and closer together until im pretty sure thats it and then I practice the timing. Good luck!
fun fact, moves under 10 frames are physically imposible to reactivly block, human reaction speed is about 7-8 frames or 120 ms for a verry reactive human and the game lags at about 4-5 frames.
I'm a bit confuse with the "frame trap". Is it how fast you can input something else after the Start-up, whether the opponent blocked or not? Thanks for the vids Dink!
Jestermask think of it like a mini combo. Example b3 is +5, so that takes 5 frames off the startup of your next move. So if 2 is 8 frames..if you do it after b3 it would be 3f. So they can't move after b3 creating a combo of b3,2. I hope that makes sense I know it can be overwhelming at first
I know its 4 years later, but Im on practice mode and Bane’s 12 has a higher startup than his 123. Since the first two moves in the 123 are literally the same as his 12 then why is the startup different
The startup is for the last hit of the move. so his 1(brutal jab) is 7 frame startup, the second hit of that string 12(dead on) is 14 frame startup, then the third hit of that string 123 (final strik) the third hit starts up in 6 frames. So it tells you how fast each move of that string starts. I hope thats helpful 4 years later!
SmoothAsUsual47 it's easy you want to turn that off because the button won't release the hit until you take your finger off the button. It's mainly for shooting games
Well first of all thank u for your time and effort for doing this kinda little Tutorial on how to read Frame Data in this game! I kinda new what Frame Data is like things like STARTUP / ON BLOCK / ON HIT - But im new to this game and i want to get good in MKX i played naturaly whitout knowing Frame Data in generall or even take the time for it and i could punish only certain things cuz i watched other ppl and learned from them i played Liu Kang back in the day and had a lot of fun actually. But there is a question i would really like to know about this game how NEGATIVE should a move be in this game in order to punish it correctly like is there a STANDARD on which i can look up to or so ? In SFV it is -4 but how is it in this game ? :) u got a new sub and im loofking forward to other things ! Have a nice day shoutouts from germany !
shujinkydink ah okay gotcha! Thanks for the reply man, I've been playing MKX since it came out but frame data has always confused me a little lol - side note; I picked up summoner because of you 😂 love the content man
Yep! I played a guy online and we both picked him at the same time. I tried to say what a coinkydink we both picked shujinko! but i said what Shujinkydink!

I'm already familiar with frame data but i'm here for 3 things
1. You can never learn too much
2. It's cool to see dink teaching, you can see he enjoys it
3. #CleavagePower
Thanks for all of these dink, this is my first injustice game so I'm having a hard time but I'll be grinding to get better 💪💪
no thank you man!
Thanks man. This did assist me in becoming a better injustice 2 player
I've been playing fighting games for years. i think i was 5 when i first picked up mk2. i've always loved fighting games but never could get the understanding to get myself to the next level. just wanted to say i'm super fortunate for coming upon your channel and really appreciate videos like these

Finally someone who can explain frame data clearly and briefly. Thank you!
"This game runs at 60 fps, so a 10 frame move would be about 1/10 of a second"
wut
This was a true help to my skill. I always just played these games but thanks to you im beginning to truly grasp the art of the game. Thank you.
Even though I knew pretty much what frame data was, I never understood how you would determine what "+3 on block" meant in a way of how would I determine what I could follow up with afterwards. But this helped tremendously and now I've figured it out thanks to the way you described it! Thanks a bunch.
New sub. You are an excellent teacher. Very straightforward yet comprehensive. 🤘from Boston!
This video was EXTREMELY helpful, really appreciate it since you're the only youtuber I watch who made a video like this. Subscribing now too 👍🏽
This is probably the most useful video ever. Been dying to learn about frame data. Gonna take this information to become a better player. Thanks Dink!!!!
Omq this is sooo off topic but the "It" trailer ad that showed up spooped me
All of your videos are great, but this has definitely been the most helpful for me. Please keep up the great work!
Wow, had to watch it about three times, but I think I have a ok understanding. Good job on the video
Im new to fighting Games and your Videos helping me so much, youre realy good at teaching this stuff keep it up and thank you
Thank you so much for making this video, Ive never understood how fighting game players use frame data
Dude this is super Helpful!!!! I main Robin and my friend always punishes me with Green Arrows hurricane bow. I'm going practice countering it now
I just wanted to say thst your guides have been the biggest aide in helping me learn this game. I've gone from not knowing what to do into being decent. Thanks so much for the help!
You deserve more subs. Great content, straight to the point. You sir earned a sub and multiple references.
Thanks dink!!! I needed it for my first I justice game
Thanks this was awesome! I can't find anything else like this
dink thank you man for this. I've always find frame data confusing but you made it pretty simple. gotta get good now lol
Very clear and concise. This is great. Thanks dude.
Incredible video and easy for a noob like myself to understand. Thank you man!
this helped out a whole lot thanks for the video. keep up the good work dink

God damn, thanks very much man, best video around
This was so handy, thanks!
Injustice 2 is my first fighting game and needless to say i'm getting rocked online lol, definitely looking forward to seeing what combos you discover for characters because i need to find someone to One-trick with. dropping a sub! Gj.
xMrRockHard thx man!!
Awsome vid, keep up the great work
Dude this video is amazing
thanks for the video this really help me about how block advantage works IMA subscribe 😉😉👍👍
Regarding frame traps (3:16) if f3 is plus on block how does the standing 2 trap if f3 is first. How does the game engine trap ? I don't get it
Great video as usual dink!
Yes, I completely understand (sarcasm).
@River To be fair, I had to rewatch this a few times to fully understand it. Especially since I've never even heard about frame data before. So it's understandable why he doesnt completely understand yet.
So knowing your main character's frame data is good enough or do i also have to know my opponents frame data
Knowing your character frame data is good but when you know your opponents it makes it that much easier to punish them when they make a mistake
this helped a lot great video thanks man
your amazing man
Thanks brother great videos
so would you recommend doing combos like robins b213? cuz i get trapped into just cycling the preset combos since I'm not too good at juggling them
I know this is stupid question but new to the game and what's the best gear to pick for the head arms chest legs on so on..love your channel
No such thing as a stupid question! Depends on the character you pick, ones that provide good defense are useful. If you're playing a power character like superman strength buffs are helpful
Yo! dude I didn't think about it in this way. man you help me a lot. dr.fate is my main.. I'm looking forward to beating ppl online.
Hey Dink and the recover? listed there, while looking at a specific move what is the first thing should i know about the recover value there?
How do you know what combos into what? Say I use a move that has 10 hit adv, and the next move i have has 8 start up, does that mean the second move will combo with the first?
this helped a lot man thanks
Thanx man i just got it about a week ago the legendary edition and its sweet the stuff like this i never knew what it meant but i do now 😂
Thanks so much dink!!

Why the back 1,2 and the back 1,2,3 have different startup frames if both of them start with back 1 ?
hey this may be a loaded question, but I hope you can answer it. what do you do if someone keeps using "safe" moves? how are you ever supposed to punish? what can you do against people that spam safe combos?
you need to stop them from doing that move, or counter with a MBB3 which has armour which will eat one hit so you can counter the follow up :)
would it be -35 + 11 to make the move actually -24? still punishable but is that how it works?
Do you have a beginner video for someone that is new to Injustice or fighting games in general and is planning to get Injustice 2?
Great video!
thanks man
thank you!!
Fighting Robin is a problem for me, because he's so quick.
Thanks for the help! Does this all apply to Mortal Kombat X as well?
Great video dink!
Quick question. If my block advantage on a move is lets say 10 frames and the opponent blocked then any move under or equal 10 frames should punish that move IMMEDIATELY post blocking. Is that correct? Or does it mean that the opponent can't do anything no matter how fast their move is for 10 frames?
2:40 I still don't get it.the fwd 3 is after the 2. How can it make the other faster
Great video! can you explain what the recover frame is? does it take X frames to finish the move from the very start-up? or from on hit/block?
From the hit or block. So once the hit lands, it will take x amount of frames for the player to "recover" come back to neutral position.
awesome thx my dude
I know this video is old but i seriously need your help. How do you use your frame traps when the game makes your character recover extremely fast? @@shujinkydink thanks. I'll give it a shot.
Great video bud
great explanation :)
How would u kno what a sprint cancel was on block was in mkx??
This will be the last genre game I study;Fighting
sounds like you've been on some crazy journey in gaming!
fun fact, moves under 10 frames are physically imposible to reactivly block, human reaction speed is about 7-8 frames or 120 ms for a verry reactive human and the game lags at about 4-5 frames.
I appreciate you :D
See I kind of get this stuff but what I don't understand is why say back 2 has different data than back 223.
Would standing 1 be the fastest punish against every unsafe move?
Super helpful!!
Tekken been doing this since the 90"s
I'm a bit confuse with the "frame trap". Is it how fast you can input something else after the Start-up, whether the opponent blocked or not? Thanks for the vids Dink!

Got it, thanks!
subbed to you good sir awesome video
So basically block advantage is when you block and you have a high block advantage, you can punish?
exactly
I know its 4 years later, but Im on practice mode and Bane’s 12 has a higher startup than his 123. Since the first two moves in the 123 are literally the same as his 12 then why is the startup different

Zulfikeay thx for the sub! And to answer your question generally speaking -10 is universally punishable by most of the cast :)
No clue what any of this means looks like I have to button mash my way to victory
I legit don't follow the frame data thing because it's sooooo confusing. But I win and lose games often.
So what's classed as safe on this game? Is it the same as mkx? Like - 6 n stuff is safe?
Manny S yep -6
shujinkydink I know there isn't but if there was a move that had start up frames of 5, would that be able to punish the - 6 move?
Manny S yes but it would be very very tight
shujinkydink ah okay gotcha! Thanks for the reply man, I've been playing MKX since it came out but frame data has always confused me a little lol - side note; I picked up summoner because of you 😂 love the content man
Wouldn't a 6 frame move be a tenth of a second? Cuz 6/60 is 1/10, jus sayinn
What's the difference between Powergirl and Supergirl?
Its a purely cosmetic skin. In this game anyway.
teh boobs
shujinkydink lol
Is your name based off of Shujinko from MK Deception?
Yep! I played a guy online and we both picked him at the same time. I tried to say what a coinkydink we both picked shujinko! but i said what Shujinkydink!
Who in your opinion has the best frame data?
I'd say either starfire or Catwoman. They can both do very safe and damaging things
Dink how do you rank up your character
win more games, play more offline stuff...beat story :)
What about fighting game terminology is don't understand any of it
I subbed
random question : are you using an arcade stick? . Second (non-random) question ,are you going to keep uploading MKXL videos ?
pablocba he will stream mkx but don't know if he will upload mk videos
unbreakable sub zero video coming tonight! and secondly yes i use a stick lol only for injustice though
cool then , im still at a "meh" status about injustice 2 , specially when i know its not comming to pc =( , also the lvl thing and upgrades are something that i dont like on a fighting game . I have an arcade stick too (MyFlash F300), but i need an octogal restrictor , i guess that for my next fighting game im going to use it instead of a gamepad.
I suck at frame data
