I am new Father to a beautiful little girl. 1 week and 1 day old. While in the hospital, we were told that swaddling was no longer a preferred method that it could increase risk for SIDS. As a professor myself, I started my research. I found the article from 2016 mentioned in this video and was concerned. Especially after being told we should not swaddle. Then I read AAPs recommendations which stated that swaddling was okay, until the baby starts to roll onto their side or tummy. I wish there was a more solid answer to new parents about swaddling. I was excited and prepared until our baby came in the hospital and was told differently. Your video and you both being doctors, have helped me to decide that swaddling is indeed okay and safe. I was looking for a video on how to swaddle best to protect from hip dysplasia and issues in the future. Just want to say thank you. This has truly helped, will be tuning in to learn more as my baby grows!
Congrats Dad!! I bet that sweet little girl has you wrapped around her finger already. So glad this video was helpful. We try to share AAPs recommendations whenever possible! Before having a baby, I (Sarah) didn't realize that you had to "wean the swaddle" once they are rolling over, but of course it makes sense--don't want them stuck on their tummy! We felt swaddling really helped Cec sleep, so hopefully it helps your daughter too!
I’m pregnant with my second, and I LOVE to research, so I knew most of this. But hearing it from 2 professionals is a nice reassuring reminder. I’ve been binge watching your videos as I’m isolating with COVID. So thank you for all the information you are providing!
I'm a new Nana. I just Love your video's here on youtube. Thank you so much for all your content. I have learned so much. Things have sure change since I had my last baby 32 years ago. Your videos are teaching me tons of great things to do for my only Grandchild. Thanks again
She's so cute! She likes looking left I see :) My son was a right looker. It's so interesting how the advice differs from country to country. I live in Norway, and we generally don't swaddle, and also put babies to sleep with a loose blanket. I've looked at the statistics, and there doesn't seem to be much difference in SIDS rates between the two countries.
Oh Fiamma! Thank you so much for the kind words! We are so happy you found us and welcome to our channel. Congrats on your pregnancy--we hope it is going smoothly and are so excited for you!!
Oh my goodness! First time dad here and I had a general concept of the swaddle from the hospital, we couldn’t ever get it quite as secure as the hospital staff could. We picked up a halo sack yesterday and didn’t want to fight with it in the middle of the night with it. Tried it before putting youngster down tonight. GAME CHANGER!
We use the swaddleme and we love it because it works with the wheaton pavlick harness he has to wear due to his mild hip dysplasia from being breach so we put the bottom flap in between his legs and swaddle the top part as usual and he looks like a cute little tadpole ❤
My only question is - do you guys do house calls? To Germany? Ha! Your videos do make me feel much more confident in my ability to be a parent, I'm so envious of your patients!
I Love your guy’s videos! Y’all are too cute and give amazing Info to us new parents! I’m due November 7th 2021 (shout out to ALL our beautiful pandemic babies born this year!)❤️❣️❤️❣️
Omg she is super cute 🥰 …Im in last trimester staying away from my family .my husband and i are learning a lot from you guys..Thanks for the videos…can you make a video about baby pillows and baby rockers??Are they safe to use??
Awesome video thank you! What do you guys think about baby monitors like the Owlet Sock or the Sense-U that monitor baby's vitals? Would be nice to know from doctor's point of view if they are worth buying and if they are necessary or not. Nothing replaces safe sleep practices, but would just like to get your take on it. Thank you for the great and informative videos!
I loved using the owlett. We got ours second hand and the wire broke after a while so we changed to a battery operated belly/movement sensor, it ran out of battery quickly though.
Your videos are so informative. As a FTM, I’ve learned a lot! Thank you so much. Can you make a video regarding breastfeeding?? I’m 7 days pp, and needing to supplement since my milk supply is low.. baby is starting to prefer bottle feeding now over breast. Any tips would be so helpful!
Glad I watched this. I couldn't figure out why my halo sleep sacks and swaddle me swaddles were bunching up by my daughters face. Looks like I was pulling the flaps up over the shoulder too much.
Can you post a video of kind of teas or food that we need to avoid if we are trying to conceive ? I was drinking this apple cinnamon tea and it had licorice root in it and on google , it says licorice root can cause behavioral problems in children. I’m avoiding caffeine including black tea and matcha and green tea too since I started trying to conceive . I miss drinking something hot ( like tea ). So can you please recommend teas that are safe to drink for women trying to conceive ? Thanks
My Bub loved the Love To Dream swaddle as a newborn, then transitioned into one with arms out when he started to roll. We used it in a mesh bassinet and an owlet sock monitor. Now he’s 1 and not loving the cot, so he bed shares in a romper suit for easy nappy changes.
We really like your videos and congrats on your little baby. I have a question I'm 45 years old and 10 weeks pregnant naturally, with baby no2. I like to ask what is the max folic acid dose I can take, before pregnancy, I talked 800 mcg, and when I got pregnant I talked 1200 mcg now I'm 10 weeks I'm thinking to go back to 800 mcg. I do this because of my age and I had 2 miscarriages before.
Day 2 at home with Baby Louis and these videos are super useful!! Louis doesn’t want to put his arms to the side… 🤷♂️ is it ok to leave his arms in bent position (hands to chest) inside the swaddle?
Hi Sarah and Kurt! Would you be able to do a video on planned Csection births? I have placenta previa and will be giving birth to our first child, a baby girl, on September 10 via planned csection. I don't really know what to expect and would love to hear you speak about it :). Thanks!
A good rule to follow is to have baby in similar layers as you are wearing plus one. At room temperature for sleep, a single layer plus a swaddle blanket is almost always sufficient. Please be careful not to have extra blankets where baby is sleeping as this can be a risk to them should the blanket get infront of their faces and block their breathing.
, I have a couple different types of swallows I want to try when I have my first child and if your daughter is just so precious and I think tutorials like this are really important for first-time parents. I've swallowed a few babies in my time I've been a nanny for years and I've also helped with my nieces and nephews since I was a kid but you always have something to learn.
Hi dear drs love your channel. I have a one month new born... did not knew about the swaddling technique and it's quite interesting. My baby is sleeping through the night and I just wake her once to clean her and give her a feed...so no problems there but during the day she is not sleeping long enough and really short amounts of time... and mostly only close to me... is it to late to start swaddling now since I have a good night routine running. Or can I just swaddle during the day... it.wont confuse her perhaps? Binge watching your videos they are soooo insightful thanks alot!
I'm pregnant myself, so I'm just guessing. :) I think you have 1-2 per size of the baby and season? Some brands like Swaddle Up have light ones for Summer and thicker for Winter.
Agree with the above! Great for sleep and just comfort, but be sure to get your awake baby some time to explore by having their arms and legs free during wake periods.
My question is when and why to swaddle, I see many people swaddling babies all night long which is something that worries me as I feel this could make it easier to suffocate if the baby squirms and with the swaddling creating a sausage shape that rocks easily and so the baby might end up on his/her face. Would it not be better to only swaddle when a baby awake and needs some comfort?
I wish we could get our baby to this level of calmness. It breaks my heart with her being so upset all the time. She wakes herself up every 30 minutes an hour at night and the only swaddle she likes is the hospital and she’s three weeks now, so we want to move away from that.
I just took a prenatal class from a major hospital in Toronto Canad and they said swaddling with arms tight like you have increases the risk of SIDS. They advised to swaddle with arms out.

This question is for Kurt: As a Pediatrician, would you treat your Daughter yourself, or would you take Her to a different Pediatrician? You should make a video about explaining what you would do in that case.
Not illegal (at least in US). It IS advised against though. Child of a doctor here- never received medical care from parent but did go to their practice and see a different doctor. Might have gone to parent once or twice when other provider was not in- for things like shots, etc., I know my parents reasoning for NOT seeing family as patients was more of a concern with comfort for both doc and family. For example, a child might not tell their doc they are sexually active if their doc is their parent. Or, children may associate the fear/discomfort of shots/doc appointments with their parent- which wouldn’t be fun. Or parental emotions could interfere with quality of care, etc.,
Your baby girl is so adorable that I couldn’t pay attention to the swaddling part at all 🤣🤣
Thank you guys! Just a first time dad here trying to help his wife get more sleep. Your channel is gold 🙏

How should be dress babies when swaddle? Especially at night time...I live in CA
A good rule of thumb for dressing babies is to match the layers you have one and then add one layer such as a light blanket/swaddle for sleep.

Pretty sure its illegal (conflict of interest) for doctors to treat their family
Not illegal (at least in US). It IS advised against though. Child of a doctor here- never received medical care from parent but did go to their practice and see a different doctor. Might have gone to parent once or twice when other provider was not in- for things like shots, etc.,
