As a US Navy vet, we used to raz the US Coast Guard guys. We called them "Coasties" or "puddle pirates", but I have the utmost RESPECT for what they do! When everyone else has either headed into port or is already there, the USCG is heading out to save lives. Who else would have the BALLS to take a 40 foot boat into 40 foot seas? MUCH RESPECT!
If you remember the Coast Guard was part of the Department of Transportation prior to 9/11, than they became part of the Department of Homeland and now they are part of the Department of Defense. Prior to that the only time they were part of the Defense Department was during war time and there ships were painted gray and was part of the Navy.
My daddy served in the Guard during WWII. He was a Chief Gunnery Officer on an LST in the Pacific arena. he was proud of his ship and maintained a close relationship with several of his shipmates. R.I.P. daddy...I miss you very, very much.

I think it's because in times of war, they're not an offensive branch by any means. If war rolls around, they do their duty, but it doesn't take the fight to the enemy. Otherwise, it wouldn't be called the Coast Guard. However, given that, they are arguably the most crucial branch in peacetime duties. I can't think of anything that the other branches do in peace that the Coast Guard has literally always done, and done well.
Navy actually has to fly a coast guard flag have a coast guard officer aboard to do drug interdiction legally. In WW2 the coast guard actually fell under naval command and it is not in the DoD so it is forgotten a lot. They do protect the shores by the shores well though.
Rip to the coast guardsman who saved 500 marines during ww2 but lost his life saving all 500. No marine was killed or wounded except him. He was given the Medal of Honor and is the only coast guardsmen with the Medal of Honor. Amen and Rest In Peace the devil dogs will never forget your sacrifice. I’m enlisting in the marine corps in 4 yrs. but this coast guardsmen in my opinion is a devil dog guardsmen. Semper fi and Semper Paratus.
Retired Chief Petty Officer here....the coast guard was a great career and I would recommend it for any young man or woman looking for a career and/or just to get away from mom and dad for a few years, or, 27+ in my case.
I noticed a man looking at me at a mall and he came over and asked me if I was in Coast Guard. Here he was a MK1 on the same ship as me. I often wonder where he's at. A very small world.

US Army vet and former Red Cross volunteer. Service to The Armed Forces. I called families of someone who enlisted including the Coast Guard. If some family member was sick or passed away, The Red Cross would bring home the service member. Very rewarding.

I'm a musician/entertainer, i neglected the Coast Guard theme in my Patriotic Medley, it wasnt very popular so i never sat down and learn the songs. Occasionally someone would ask and I'd tell them i havent worked on that one. I have a Veterans Day piano performance coming up this Sat, the 11th, 2023 and was once again asked about the Coast Guard, the lady seemed not too happy. Today, i came home, listened and listened, i picked it up, i got it, i like it. The more i played, the more i liked it. 😢 Then i started reading some of the comments and felt ashamed i waited so long to learn and play this for my audience. I think of all the Coast Guards that were never acknowledged. Well guess what, it's time to make up for lost time, i will this song during every Patriotic medley, Brookdale Galleria will really enjoy this years Veterans Day celebration, i pray there's a Coast Guard Vet in the building, moving forward, I will inquire from the residents if we have any Coast Guard Vets in the building. There's a WWII vet on one of my channel, (Video below), he's probably passed by now. After my performance i put my hand on his shoulder and said "Sir, thank you for fighting for our country, we really appreciate you". He bust out crying as he sat in his wheelchair, i asked him why was he crying, his words broke my heart, he said,"Aint nobody ever told me that before". I made him feel much better after i told him what was in my heart. Its all about love/God. Thanks for allowing me to share this.

I can't say I share your opinion, but if my personal favorite(Navy) was cut out of the picture, I don't think I'd want to enlist in any of the other branches, excluding the Coast Guard. Something about it exudes humble nobility, and it's hard not to like it for that reason alone, let alone all the branch does.

Sea Cadet here. To me, the Coast Guard is one of the most( if not the most) important branch of the military. I'm actually stuck trying to decide which to go into, Coast Guard or Navy.
Coast Guard is much better for job satisfaction. And Navy is way too serious about protocol. Navy zeros think they are gods, CG zeros stick to leadership.
I'm proud to say that I can say Semper Paratus and always mean it! I've passed my basic training and report to my unit soon. This version is a little different than the one we sing in basic, but still a good version.

Augustus Stewart Well coast guard special forces are mainly for that proposes. Air force is mainly recovery, and seals arn't trained for that type of stuff when the competition was held.

USCGC Roger B Taney #37 WWII Was the only warship afloat in Hawaii after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Korea, Viet Nam. Now retired and on display in Baltimore, MD since 1988 and considered a National Historic Landmark. I am proud to have served on her.
Taney was moored near the Harbor close to the Honolulu power plant and is credited with it's defense as she brought her guns to bare from some enemy aircraft. She is known as the last survivor of Pearl that is still afloat. Taney crew here 80-82 with CO Jimmy Hobaugh.

The one that should be overlooked is the Marines, they, even they hate it, are part of the Navy. All funding is from the Department of the Navy.

Augustus Stewart Well coast guard special forces are mainly for that proposes. Air force is mainly recovery, and seals arn't trained for that type of stuff when the competition was held.

USCGC Roger B Taney #37 WWII Was the only warship afloat in Hawaii after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Korea, Viet Nam. Now retired and on display in Baltimore, MD since 1988 and considered a National Historic Landmark. I am proud to have served on her.
Taney was moored near the Harbor close to the Honolulu power plant and is credited with it's defense as she brought her guns to bare from some enemy aircraft. She is known as the last survivor of Pearl that is still afloat. Taney crew here 80-82 with CO Jimmy Hobaugh.
