Well technically the song that plays during most of Omega Flowey's fight titled "Your Worst Nightmare" is a separate song from the more energetic song played during the end of the boss fight called "Finale".So that's why it appears to become a bop at the end.

    • @troykv96
      @troykv96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

Yeah, in fact, Finale only appears after you have removed Flowey's power source, and made him actually vulnerable to be damaged.
At that point the battle isn't as hopeless as it looked, and you're trying as hard as you can, because your DETERMINATION has managed to find HOPE, a bit like how happens in the other final battle

Too many actual horror games on here but I guess the definition can be a bit blurred, as seen with Off.
I always like when a song is given a dark reprise like Cradle of Time. Optional dungeon the Abyss in Wild Arms 3 starts with a rather jaunty adventurous tune for the first 10 floors, only for it to get remixed to be more dour for the next 20... and then it gets downright spooky for the next 30. And then, for the final 40, well... Also 'helps' that you get more limited visibility.
I mean just imagine if you're a composer and the company tells you to remix a song you made except creepier. Then they tell you to do it again. Then they tell you to do it YET AGAIN.

  • @TonicSpirits

When Undertale came on, I was surprised you chose Your Best Nightmare instead of The Fallen Child. Your Best Nightmare has a lot more to talk about for sure, and I totally see why you included it, but for disturbing songs, I think The Fallen Child takes the cake. Seeing the culmination of the genocide route is one of the most tense and unsettling moments I've ever experienced in gaming (I only watched the genocide playthrough, but as the game might say - does that really make me any better?).

Or hell, speaking of the genocide route, what about "In my way"? The song that plays when you begin the encounter with Monster kid, before the undyne fight? Arguably, I'd say this is when the genocide run gets it's darkest; you had just killed one of the most light hearted characters in the game and now you're going to kill a child.

  • @X-35173
    @X-35173 3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

One song I would have picked is Anxiety from Celeste.
The composer outright stated that she wrote the song to be the musical embodiment of a panic attack and it shows!
One detail that I think is underappreciated though is the use of Madeline's main theme. Practically half the ost uses a variant of her signature melody, but Anxiety gets stuck on the first bar and never moves past it. Like it wants to say something but it's struggling to compose itself (no pun intended) or even struggling to breath.

The amount of variety compiled within this list is impressive and makes for a very high quality video. That being said, why is Action 52's 2 note song so high? Other than that, the reasoning for each entry is sound but somewhat convoluted. Judging the song not just on its own, but how its used in the game especially for the lower half of the list. The reason why I say convoluted is that it feels more like your justifying your lower entries after the fact and it really bogs down the first third

Talking about bionicle, I liked it how , for most of the Mata Nui saga, the protagonist was not one of the toa. Takua was, as far as anyone knew, an ordinary ta-Matoran. Yet the story starts with him, his quest to summon the toa in the the gameboy game, the saga of the Mata Nui online game, and of course, the movie. He brought the toa together. While the toa fought Makuta, Takua led the team of ordinary matoran that held off the Makuta's army of possessed beasts. As the toa of light, he faced alone a foe that took the combined strength of the six to overcome.

Here we go, let's give my thoughts on each entry:
15: With that one ending being a possible ending, I'd argue that it could be considered a horror game, but okay.
14: Personally, Gaster's Theme from the random sound test menu is creepier to me, especially since you can't change the song after you select it. But since you only get a 1% chance of finding it, this probably was the better choice, even if I don't consider it that bad.
13: DON'T. GIVE. CREEPYPASTA WRITERS. IDEAS.
12: This is something to be expected from the Danganrompa franchise.
11: Has he played Metroid Dread yet? If so, would a song from Dread top this one?
10: My brother is a germaphobe. I can never let him hear this song.
9: When he just had the text, I could hear Josh in my head saying those things. I guess humor is a good coping mechanism for fear.
8: Why does THIS PLACE have a scarier and more disturbing theme than the LITERAL WORLD OF SHADOWS?
7: "Surrealism doesn't always mean to be scary." THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE INSTANCES. THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID.
6: It reminds me of a church bell. Only 8-bit.
5: Okaaaaay, I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight.
4: Well, it's not like Master Chief has it much better.
3: One of my hobbies right now is to gather disturbing music from video games and put the in a playlist for a future horror campaign, so I'm glad you mentioned how this soundtrack could be used for D&D.
2: Now I have to listen to the whole soundtrack multiple times. 1 time for each port.
1: ... Why is this song one that I've never heard of? This is more disturbing that Giygas, more disturbing than Radio, and even more disturbing than River Twygz Bed. WHAT THE FUUUUUUU-!!!

Anything disturbing and unnatural songs in a non horror environment can always catch people off guard in video games since you never expect them. It always makes me wonder what the composers/writers of a disturbing horror track and the game developers were thinking with those ideas. Also they're ton out there to choose from so for those who will be playing any game for the first time be prepared for disturbing music because you never know when it will show.

My picks would be the Drowning Countdown and Sonic CD American boss music fromnSonic and Singularity from Persona 5 Strikers. The countdfown on when Sonic will drown is a classic, sending fans into a rush and dread to get the air bubble before it's too late, and Sonic CD's American version of the boss theme is COMPLETELY unnerving, perhaps emphasizing how Dr. Robotnik is more dangerous than one expects, considering the army of robots on his side. This combined with the disturbing Fun is Infinite hidden message, makes it more infamous. In Persona 5 Strikers, I believe that the Okinawa Jail is the most disturbing level in Persona history. Singularity, the Jail's song, has the feeling of unsettling atmosphere, like how at any moment, a shadow may find you and jumpscare you at any corner. If even Makoto/Queen is terrified of the atmosphere, then this level is quite disturbing, in my opinion.

I would personally like to give some attention to the Master of Master's theme from Kingdom Hearts. His theme Is such a mood swing from what we see of MoM himself. Such a seemingly cheery and expressive character has this low toned, dancing piano piece with low violins and discordant piano keys. It's like the music is telling you there is some horribly, terribly wrong with this guy underneath his fun disposition. KH has had somber tracks in the past, but that song just feels out of place compared to those. It feels almost... intentionally broken at points.. And considering what MoM said his plan was in Re:Mind (or at least, the tiny bit we know), yeah this fits.

Your... friend (I'd say girlfriend but we all know what happened in CS) gets stapled on to a wall. Even if everything is all paper like, that's still a disturbing thing to think about! Oh and to add insult to injury, some of the notes in the track sound like heartbeats, as if that's Peach's heartbeats you are hearing. The only flaw I can give it is that it's short, lasting around like, 50 seconds.
Oh and also the Otherworld Title Screen. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the new and improved River Twygz.

Okay here's mine. "Sceneman" from Killer 7. It's the song that plays when you fight Ulmeyda in the game when he becomes a Heaven Smile. You played Hollowknight right? I am a bit surprised you missed one track in particular from the OST. Hollowknight is defiantly not a horror game. The sound track was done by Christopher Larkin who is best known for making music for Barbequing documentaries (yes its real you can look it up). The tacks in HollowKnight range from the somber tones of the Resting Grounds to the energy of Hornet's theme to the ambiance of the Forgotten Cross roads to the some what hopeful optimism of Dirt Mouth. Your job in HollowKnight is break the seal on the Black Egg and to do that you need to find the masks of the 3 dreamers. Once you find their shrine in the Resting Grounds and the Seer Gives you the Dream Nail. You can see the three locations where the Dreamers are resting. You see that one is in the City of Tears, you see another in Fog Canyon, and you see the final one in a area at the Bottom left side of the map.
So you start exploring the Fungal Wastes which seems to be near where you need to go, and you read the lore tablets to get a better idea of where you are looking for and immediately...Things are off...You find out that who ever or what ever lives in this area we are looking for were not and are not the best of neighbors. So much so to the point of where the mighty matriarchs of the mantis tribe the Mantis Lords LOCKED AND GUARDED the entrance to the area you need to go... So you prove yourselves worthy to the Mantis Lords via the only way they accept combat and they unlock the door to where you need to go. You think to your self why did the mantis lords test you? Why did you need to prove yourself to them? You soon find out why once you find your self in Deep Nest. Oh man does this area suck and is unlike ANY other in the game. It is more maze like than any other areas. Everything is out to kill you more so than usual even the dead corpses of bugs comes back to life. There are pit falls and even enemies that come from nowhere from both the background and the literal ground. Even strong enemies that can deal 2 whole mask of damage to you lurk in cramped spaces that you need to pass. Seemingly friendly NPCs will try to eat you in Deepnest. Even the normally friendly grubs cant be trusted in Deep Nest. Hell you can't even trust yourself or rest for a second in Deepnest
All companied by the song one could generously call music of the area simply Known as Deep Nest

And the entire time , dial tone is playing, just a few paino keys in a loop that occasionally dips into pure uncomfortable silence before starting up again. There is one theme I am surprised has not appeared on either the original list or this remake.
Sonic CD Boss Theme North American version.
Along with probably a few other Mario Themes
mainly a good majority of Mario and Luigi Partners in Time (I'd go with Hollijolli Village or Toad Town as two that would fit the creepy vibe. though would you count Partners in time has horror related or not.
Second Game I'd choose is Paper Mario Color Splash, a game ridiculed with criticism by some of the more toxic paper Mario fans(especially the TTYD elitists), but I'd say the Shunned Guys theme is probably the creepiest theme that game has to offer. And plus, the enemy itself is so creepy that you cannot help but feel intimidated. (The shunned Guy is forced to be burned alive)
Final Mario Game I can think of that would have a creepy theme
(besides the 2 obvious cases, Super Paper Mario and Partners in Time) would be Paper Mario and The Origami King. Namely the Princess Peach. A ship that is seemingly abandoned out on the waters of the great sea. You find holes littered in it, some Origami Skuttlebugs, snifits, and a few Firebros, along with figuring out what happened. You also lost Olivia, your main partner whose currently crushed so you are alone with Bobby, the amnesiac bob-omb who recently regained his memories. You also start seeing tentacles, which adds to the creepy factor. Once you get the safe, The Tentacles break the windows and steal the box. The theme that plays is far more unsettling than some of the stuff that TTYD has ever done. Still doesn't top Super Paper Mario Though, and Paper Macho Gooper Blooper is honestly a joke, but also a more enjoyable fight compared to his Sticker Star Counterpart. Still, I think most people forget that the later Paper Mario Games still have charm and that alot of people should remove the nostalgia goggles off their faces

I love this list, definetly will listen to some of these tracks later on :)
But I also wanna add a song that is one of my favourite creepy tracks: Bird Call From Afar from Genshin Impact.
The song gets triggered when it's night and you stand on Qingyun Peak at night. It only contains a flute, combined with some bird noises in the background. Not only does it sound haunting, but thanks to in-game information we actually know who plays the music and why. Xiao is a character that is heavily associated with birds, and thought demons and evil gods for millenia. He wasn't alone on that quest, he had four friends who helped him. But by killing these beings they received bad karma, that sooner or later drove the other warriors insane. Xiao is the last one remaining. We learn in a book ingame that the last of the Yaksha sometimes calls for his friends at night.
With that information, it is basically confirmed that Xiao either plays a flute or sings while in bird form, grieving the loss of his friends.
Okay, now that I think about it this might be less a disturbing song, more just sad and haunting... it still makes me jump every time I farm there at night and the flute suddenly kicks in.

Can u do a video on the 28th? As it’s my birthday, and I’m a huge fan. If not, you should do more gaming moments lists and maybe an updated top ten Pokémon list

To me the most disturbing OFF track has gotta be the Endless Hallway. It starts off tame at first, if not a bit droning. But as the song progresses, there's this incoming sense of impending doom that follows. The climax of the song is loud and anxiety inducing, it's as if whatever's chasing you is getting closer and closer, makes it feel like you really are in an endless hallway.
PS, The purified zones theme is a close second. It feels as if whatever life was left in that area is gone and washed out.

I agree with you there, endless hallways for me is in my top 10 most disturbing songs from video games.

Man, you can really tell that this guy only chose these games because he likes them, instead of making an unbiased video about disturbing music in games. There was only like 3 tracks in this video that I found disturbing

When you mentioned Twilight Princess, I thought the pick was gonna be “Light and Darkness” (aka the “Zant grabbing Midna by the throat near a lake” music)

i mean, in lore, doomguy does have alot of powers. in the original games he was a normal (albeit quite badass) human, but as the story progressed, he basically became a god

Never thought that cat purring would contribute to a creepy atmosphere...
Also, having only been exposed to the events of each of the characters (although, I haven't gone through everyone), I pretty much forgot that there's a chance of failing the Ultimate Talent Development Program. I always just thought of it as an excuse to see the characters interacting with characters outside of their respective games in a... mostly normal school environment. Kind of makes me wonder what they're going to do for S when in finally comes out.

My picks for the creepiest music in non horror games:
    - Genetic laboratory (Metroid 2 and the fan remake)
    - Wrecked ship (Super Metroid)
    - Vanessa's manor (A Hat in Time)
    - Tower of fate final level (Shovel Knight)

    Some that come to mind:
    Pinwheel - Dark Souls
The Door to the Abyss - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Haunted-Zombie Chickens! - Rayman 3
    joyrider - Destruction Derby 2
I'd say Battle f3 Shesha from SMT IV:A, but SMT is technically part horror.

To preface another candidate for my potential list on this topic, here's a quick story: As a kid, I played the Zombie Quiz on Newgrounds. Some of the information is probably outdated and I don't think some parts of it were researched correctly, but one thing that always stuck out to me was the music that played during it. It was pretty damn chilling and freaked me out, but I love horror stuff these days, so I tried to find out where the song was from, or what it even was. But because the game didn't have credits, I had a tough time. Imagine my surprise when I heard the song prop up while playing Second Sight. It's a game made by the Timesplitters Guys AKA Free Radical. Think of it like Metal Gear Solid if it swapped out mechs with more of a psychic focused narrative. The song in question plays on the final level of that game, Redemption. And while Second Sight is not a horror game, it can sometimes feel like it. Given how the grand conspiracy is naturally revealed in this level, the music that plays is probably its way of telling you how high the stakes are. What you get with Redemption is pretty damn creepy, consisting of ominous choir, eerie piano, soft violins and who could forget those ever lovely indescribable droning notes? Oh, and some harsh banging noises and intense stinger beats. Almost feels like something you would hear in an apocalypse movie or something. Probably explains why Zombie Quiz borrowed it.

Silent Hill 2's music is ironically not very disturbing for a horror game. Some tracks are unnerving, don't get me wrong. But for the most part it's somber at best and outright depressing at worst. It's pretty calm yet sad; The Day of Night is my ASMR music after a cloudy day... and Markiplier would be my sunny day ASMR. If I were to make a "top 10 horror games with the least scary songs" list, Silent Hill 2 would definitely be part of it. You wanna know what would be a part of my list for this topic? Drakengard. All the battle music in it could be considered anxiety inducing. They're all called "On the Ground" or "In the Sky" or "In the Castle" but are set apart by what chapter they play in. Hell, the menu musics sound anxious in themselves, like you really are preparing to kill people. And given the themes of Drakengard, it fits, even though it's too Dynasty Warriors/Ace Combat like to be considered a horror game. Even during Chapter 1 On The Ground, during your very first minute of gameplay, what you hear is frantic violins, repetitive stinger beats, some repeated whistling sort of sounds, oh and some intense drums too! It's almost like you're trying to defend yourself against a whole nation of murderers... or being one. Technically it's both since it's Caim fighting the empire. One particular title for some of the music called it "Mentally draining workout music." Strangely fitting title for it. Also, on an unrelated note, since Nier Automata is technically a Drakengard spinoff, I wonder why it's not called Drakengard Automata since Nier's already dead in Automata.

5:38 Technically that second part is a separate song called Finale, so that last point you deducted points for is kinda moot.

I thought Your Best Nightmare and Finale were two different songs, the former being the one where you frantically try to survive Flowey's onslaught while freeing the other SOULs, while the latter is the one where you can finally fight back.

Personal Honorable Mention: Mega Man X7. I probably lost 99 percent of you just from that! Well, at least the music is alright. And they even managed implement a boss room with really creepy atmosphere. Vortexes of data all around, each boss being represented by a cyberpunk grave marker, and of course some unsettling music called Soul Asylum. There's something uncanny about how subtle it is. Harsh, droning, overlapping notes that almost sounds like musical screaming, mixed with a reverse music box, it makes for something almost out of place in X7, for both the best reasons, and the worst; on one hand, it's really catchy in an unsettling way, but... this is Mega Man X7 we're talking about! I shouldn't have a reason to compliment something in X7! Something doesn't feel right about it...
