You know what upsets me the most on the whole controversy with Hellena Taylor? You know what makes me ANGRY about it? The way she treated her fellow voice actors like a fucking joke. The way she treated the movement to give voice actors more respect like an absolute joke. I believed her,I did and it turns out she fucking cried wolf.
Voice actors deserve respect. They deserve better payment,they deserve to be hired for their job instead of being replaced by every celebrity under the sun (*looks at the Mario movie*),they deserve proper credits. And the credibility of that fair fight thrown into the fucking trash all because ONE woman decided to get greedy (on top of using her money for horrible causes!). It just makes me so fucking upset,I hate it
No one likes being duped myself included. Even when they get their hit of karma, when the people who sided with the crocodile tears find out about it makes them feel like an idiot for falling for it (again, I was a sucker for these moments as well). Taylor made the biggest mistake of backstabbing a fellow VA and shooting herself in the foot by admitting her claim was bullshit.

Even David Hayter (Snake's VA) doesn't go after Kiefer Sutherland (Big Boss and Venom Snake on MGSV VA) and didn't throw him under the bus.
I like how you blame one person for your point falling apart instead of taking the slightest glance in the mirror to realize how bad you and all the VA celebs that pledged allegiance to her made it worse for yourselves. The only point your "movement" made to the public is that you're a mob who assembles immediately at the first accusation, with zero evidence, and actively disregarding multiple instances of damning evidence that prooved that she was lying even before bloomberg got involved.
Oh and the fact you were all gung-ho about hoping underpaid coders and programmers lose their jobs as a sacrifice to say that voice actors must be entitled to over $250 an hour.
Outside of the twittersphere your movement was a joke and the game shot up to be a best seller on amazon right after she made her claim and even before she was exposed.
The fact that someone killed themselves because of sexual harassment is just heartbreaking. And the fact that NO ONE had the guts or heart to stop this is straight up abysmal. There are no words to discuss how evil people can be.

The thing that tipped me off that Hellena Taylor was lying was when I looked up who both she and Jennifer Hale were and I found that Hale is a more renowned VA than Taylor, and ergo would logically cost more. So if the issue was about money like Taylor suggested, why would Platinum Games go for someone who would be more expensive? I recognize in retrospect that logic probably isn't completely sound, but still, that's just how I figured it out.
For me it was that, the fact that both Hellena and Hale were in the same union, and that Hellena went on record on previous interviews stating how much she was paid for bayo 1-2 that made everything feel sketchy to me. Hellenas twitter responses to the Bloomberg report only solidifies it to me that she was lying.
I was distrusting when I had a feeling Hellena Taylor was acting like she was more important to Bayonetta than the people who actually made the games and character.
Lots of things was questionable. I do not know why people especially voice actors immediately took her side. She didn’t provide hours she worked, negotiations, she says that bayonetta took her 16 hours to record for both games cause she that good(from her own mouth), Jennifer hale and yuri lowenthall, grey delise who are way expensive then hellena still stayed on this project.
She never once provided actual proof. While I understand voice actors do get screwed over, they still had the responsibility to wait for evidence and see what the actual contract was since many have said that they sign a contract if they didn’t like the deal either they negotiated or refuse the role. Unfortunately the voice actors ruined their own credibility

An add on to #3: Voice actors definitely do deserve better, but I feel like this year was especially bad for them. In addition to the whole Helena Taylor debacle, we had the passings of Billy Kametz and Kevin Conroy this year. Though even then Crunchyroll dedicated a whole section to the app to Billy when he passed, and there was the Suicide Squad trailer at the Game Awards that was dedicated to Kevin, and shortly after Geoff announced that he would be back one final time for Suicide Squad, since he finished recording before his passing.
In one channel, I used the Bayonetta 2 Game Over scene to describe Hellena Taylor's current rep.
I think suicide squad might not do well given the fan reaction to Gotham Knights and the fact the writer seems to have some issues (They made Deadshot black to match the DCEU despite being set in the Arkham Games continuity where he was white. A tweet claimed the Deadshot in the Arkham Games was a copycat which is nonsencial given he was hired by two different people 9 years apart who would be able to afford to hire the real Deadshot.)

Those songs can work on ANY negative list he makes, not just the yearly ones.
The hellena Taylor controversy ruined a lot of the credibility of voice actors. Their movement all that progress destroyed. It didn’t help that people simply believed her without any proof including voice actors

I knew from the moment that Helena Taylor threw the new Bayonetta voice actress under the bus, that something was amiss. And lo and behold, my intuition was correct
And pulling and AH on us didn't help eitheir, she didn't do as bad as AH, but she take a paige of her book, by saying she want to move on but keep pressing the problem until someone believe her.
@AT Productions exactly many TH-camrs voice actors jump on the bandwagon without thinking. Her video was questionable since the start since she never mention: hours, negotiations, evidence. It all fell apart. However, even though hellena is mostly at fault for lying the people especially the voices actors also have to unfortunately take some of the blame because they did not wait for evidence or the other side of the story. Consequently, now if a voice actor do get treated unfairly most likely they will not believe due to this controversy. It sucks but there is long term consequences
I wouldn’t be surprised if this whole train wreck of a scandal ultimately gets her blacklisted. Not just for breaking NDA and scapegoating Hale, but also for potentially endangering the livelihoods of Platinum developers who are just doing their jobs; and the credibility of voice actors as a whole (which is already on pretty thin ice for drama like KickVic, NFTs, and any out-of-context tweets that those vultures see as “problematic”).

Who thinks World of Warcraft is a franchise that people give (or at least used to give) too much credit and that any gaming series would have been a lot better if they weren’t by Blizzard?

Even after the drama with Bayonetta 3 I'm convinced that Hellena Taylor didn't know what she was doing with this plan of hers. It all starts to look like this was just a case of her being salty she didn't get re-casted for her role and was willing to take everyone down around her to do so.
That’s basically what it boiled down to tbh. She ended up lying to her fans and drummed pity points in order to both ruin PlatinumGames’s reputation and cut into sales for Bayonetta. Especially when she posted the video only a *week* before the game’s launch, as well as breaking NDA by doing so.

@@crocidile90 I think the game got some of the Streisand Effect, the negative press made people opt to buy it, but at the same time, the Japanese don't fuck around when it comes to contracts and copyrights. Look at how many times Team Four Star got their shit pushed in by Toei for DBZ Abridged, I wouldn't be surprised if they're suing, but keeping it hush-hush.
You KNOW you've stooped to a new low when EA is on #4 and Nintendo, which was at the very bottom of the previous two lists, was a honorable mention, Activision.
It also shows Nintendo, for all their faults, we can see they aren't trying to be stupid or attacking fans

Although I think the Nintendo honorable mention in this vid is kinda dumb tbh, since I'd argue it isn't really true. That's just my opinion, though.

@@goldosprey I know, I remember Switch Online Expansion from last year being on there. I think it's on the same level of bad as the highest tier of Sony's PS Plus service that rolled out this year, so I wish he had mentioned it on this year's list. I don't know a single person who subbed to that and didn't regret it.

The tech bros tried every way possible to spin them as "the future" and tried to insert their way into gaming like a parasite, but as with most of their projects they ended up dying through a mix of people wising up and the system collapsing under itself.
Of course now they've just moved onto their next get rich quick grift aka AI art
If there's any good that might come from the potential Second Great Depression, it's that it will kill off NFTs and crypto as a whole once and for all.

The Scarlet and Violet mini rants hit the nail on the head perfectly.
The game was SO DAMN CLOSE to being amazing. But they just HAD to hit that November deadline. The game is great. Easily one of the best games of the series. But the performance and glitches hold it back from being THE best. It really should’ve gotten an extra month or two in a oven.

Sounds to me like my second favorite franchise is now getting rushed like my first favorite franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog, used to be with Sega. Hopefully Sega will never go back there again.

Sega still rushes Sonic. The difference is that at least now with Pontaff gone, it feels like they're genuinely trying to do the blue blur justice and make good games even under tight deadlines. The same can't be said for GamefrEAk. There's no soul or care in the world from them towards Pokemon. It's a cashcow to them, and they no it. The only thing they'll put "effort" into is pushing the shitty mobile games and merch.

I'd have bumped Helena Taylor up a position. Because not only did she do all this shit and essentially blacklist herself forever, she also set the "fair pay for voice actor" movements back. Because the next time it comes up, people will just be "Look who's being an entitled actor, just like Helena Taylor."
Pretty much. The movement lost its credibility. Plus while hellena Taylor deserves majority of the hate we can’t deny that the voice actors who took her side are also to blame. Hale came out looking pretty golden throughout this by saying nothing except she was so happy to be Bayonetta. She was probably under NDA, but there's a lot she could have said
If I can add to Number #3, as someone whose older sister is a VA herself (non-union, I should add), I have two examples. First example, whenever my sister is involved in a project and has to sign an NDA, she has to hold and honor the responsibility to not tell me or our mother about any confidential information about a project until after it's released. Second example relating to HH, Edward Bosco (the speaking voice for Alastor for the pilot) has stated on the recent Hunicast stream that he is currently not allowed to talk about info regarding the series unless it relates to the already-released pilot. For both examples, it shows professionalism on top of understanding how the business works.
The fact that Hellena Taylor had to put her credibility at risk and cause irreversible damage shows the lack of professionalism and understanding of how the business worked on her end. And all for what purpose?
As someone who actually wants to be a voice actor, the way Hellena acted made me sick.

At that point, I kinda understand why most people called her a Gold Digger nowadays. I'm not sorry for saying this, but I think she care less about VA payment issues and more care about want more money.
It's a shame, her actions not only does ruined her career but it also makes any other voice actors hard to speak out about their payment issues.
Even though the bigger L was losing many voice actors of our childhood, including Jason David Frank and Kevin Conroy, the fact that EA (and Nintendo) are smart and not doing NFT's make them look like the devil having redemption, and the holy Nintendo not committing sin
To be fair on Nintendo, whenever there are new market schemes they are the last to try if not at all. The downside is that when they join the successful new practices like extended DLC and online multiplayer, their servers and marketing are out of date. The upside is that they could potentially dodge a bullet when they notice a bad idea (the mobile games were certainly more misses than hits). As far as EA, I think they saw how easily NFTs can lose their value and being cynical is bad enough but they don't want to risk easily losing money.

As time goes on, Kotaku genuinely seems like one of those websites where a good portion of their writers actively doesn’t want to be game journalists, in the sense that they never really wanted to cover games in the first place. Call it a crack theory but the game industry seems to be the resting ground for journalists who want to write for other major mainstream publishers or news outlets, but for some reason or another they couldn’t get a job in said field of journalism (be it a lack of experience, connections, skill, etc.). So ultimately they resort to getting a job in the field of game journalism because it’s effectively the easy way to break into the industry as a whole, regardless of whether or not they actually care about said subject matter.
Again it’s only a theory, but it serves as an explanation for the overabundance of unnecessary opinion pieces and why so many articles seem to stray away from the topic of video games in general.
So, I guess you could say it’s…

I remember I used to give them a chance when others wouldn't, but that Metroid Dread article really made me leave.
From what I heard, sometimes the easier articles were more likely written by bots that were following headlines. It's kind of happens
i give the over/under a 60% chance this is the case, 20% they are just professional activists being hired for the purpose of producing clickbait content for ads, 10% they are from the old already existing entertainment industry or other sites who did the same thing I.E. Salon or Gawker, 8% chance they are just freelancers getting their fake stories being picked up and sold by big publications for commission pay by the boomer management who either doesn't know better or is actively using ragebait for money and political propaganda with the remaining 2% being actual journo's who want to do good work but cannot due to the publications reputations and the same boomer upper management wanting more crisis and clickbait over anything actually newsworthy.
At this point i don't think game journalists give it a crap about what they do. They just want to be paid and not be a credible source. The debacles with Sonic Frontiers this year was proof of that,
2022: “Unity CEO apologizes for calling some game developers ’fYAYing idiots’. He says he will do better.”
2023: So that was a fYAYing lie.

Huh... You know, I kind of grew out of this kind of "ridiculously angry" style of videos, but seeing it directed at people worthy of contempt makes it incredibly cathartic and satisfying.

I know josh doesn’t swear in his videos, but i feel like that scene would have been even more powerful if he had gone all the way. Of course, i understand why he didn’t, so i’m only just mildly disappointed.
Blizzard is like that one friends whose a junkie or alcoholic. You really want things to get better for them but every time things get worse or they do something awful, it just hurts that much more.
Trust me just ditch those "friends" it's never worth it.

From literally the very SECOND this video started, when I heard the first few notes of "I've Got A Little List" I was already hooked. As if the Sonic '06 version of A Modern Major General wasn't win enough, this had to go and top it. Kudos Josh

The intro to number two was absolutely hilarious, but the actual fail is nonetheless infuriating. As for number one... wow. Never thought you'd see the day where a company is starting to look more evil than EA of all companies.
It's even worse when you count that they were #1 twice back to back from the previous year of 2021 and this list for 2022.
EA is even having a tiny bit of a redemption arc recently with them siding against NFTs and them starting to make actually good games again like the new Star Wars single player games post-BF2. In fact, EA is finally beginning to learn from their mistakes unlike other companies like Activision, Square, and Ubisoft who just keep doubling down.
I always saw Konami as the most evil, while EA is greedy, they aren't as malicious as ActBliz or Konami

So to give some context: the reason blizzard did the whole phone number thing in OW2 was because in the last game there were so many Smurf accounts (to the people who don’t know what a “Smurf” is: a player who is a higher rank and makes a brand new account who to play with lower rank players for easier wins) that the game was basically unplayable to new comers to the series. On paper the phone thing sounded like a good idea, but in actuality: it wasn’t.
The continued decline of Madden and the fact that EA *STILL* has the exclusive NFL license is, for lack of a better word, maddening.

With every new Fails List, I admit to wanting to listen to the musical parodies involved in them as like, their own solo tracks every time, and this year is no different.
Activision being number one again shows that the people in said company NEED to be thrown out when Microsoft buys them out fully.

Honestly it’s not just Kotaku doing that kind of crap. Especially with trying to sabotage Nintendo. I mean remember when Kotaku insisted people pirate Metroid dread instead of buying it? Frankly it’s no wonder that Nintendo is so paranoid about copyright.
I'm genuinely convinced that all the glitches and bugs that people have ran into with Scarlet and Violet are mostly in the digital versions, as plenty of my friends, myself included, all have the physical versions and I've either hardly heard about any of that stuff from them or haven't ran into myself during the time with the games.
That's not to say the games are flawless ((I've had very minor frame dips and like the occasional texture plip in the background)), nor am I defending TPC here. I do genuinely think that Scarlet and Violet could have had more time in the oven, at least a few months for quality assurance, bug fixing, etc. But I don't think ALL versions of the games are the mess that people say they are.

As a black man, I can respect Square's decision not having people of color in FF16 due to the setting. I get it. I think Europe is often seen as the centerpiece of the ethnic-melting-pot-of-medieval-times, which very likely wasn't even true. That said, people will imply that if it's fiction, then anything goes, but also imply what they "should" do because "anything goes" (kind of a contradiction). When representation is thrown around haphazardly, it's treated like a gimmick than something taken seriously. While I don't think 2022 was a bad year for gaming (honestly I thought it was a pretty good year tbh with what came out) it still has its well known and utter failures from certain companies, people, etc.

It's a shame that VA's lost a lot of trust because of Miss Taylor's stunt. It's hard enough for voice actors these days where even established character roles can be recast simply because the VA is unionized. Take Kyle McCarly. He voiced Mob from the "Mob Psycho 100" anime for two seasons yet was not recast in season 3 simply because he was unionized. For those of you not familiar with the anime fanbase, McCarly also lent his voice to several video games as well, the most notable being 9S from "Nier: Automata". And considering Automata is getting an anime adaption, a not insignificant part of me fears McCarly will not be recast, which is insane given his performance is what really brought Automata to life in terms of character development and story.
Seeing what happened to both Team Fortess 2 and Pokemon last year really makes me all the more thankful that Sonic Frontiers came out so great and polished at the end. 2022 REALLY was the best year Sonic's had in a long time when you add in his second movie, Prime show, and Origins games to it.
It's also still amazing that we live in a time where EA of all companies is looking more like an saint compared to certain other companies on the list in recent years. Truly an interesting time.
Don't forget the IDW comics that has given us new threats like Surge and Kit, while having the cahones to kill off a major villain and have him STAY DEAD in the form of Dr. Starline

That whole entire story about Hellena Taylor, I don't play Bayonetta games yet, but wow! I'm so used to hearing stories where people back up a voice actor due to them being treated so unfairly.
So this is the literal first time that I ever heard a story quite like this.
It's like hearing about somebody finally speaking up about being sexually abused or abused in general yet no one listens to them because somebody else cried wolf about a story similar to that.
I hope that this doesn't affect the justice for the voice actors like I hope it doesn't affect the justice of those poor innocent victims either. :(

The Helena Taylor situation kind of reminds me of a small time voice actor on Instagram forgot her name, but she was the voice behind the little pog champ meme if you know what that is, basically the short version of her controversy is that she scammed a bunch of people by telling them she was injured or whatever where then through reveal the DM’s, she lied about it all and got a lot of flack from fellow voice actors on the app. Thankfully, I think she returned some of the money, but yeah, needless to say in her account got deleted

about half the cast of the pilot are friends with Viv, which is a big reason why they kept on supporting the show and even still work with Viziepop doing voice work for Helluva Boss and have cameos in Hazbin as extra voices and to this day still have a good relationship with Viziepop.
Helena burned all her bridges faster than Wende Lee did with Yoruichi's recast situation and yeah she really should have been better and either not get greedy or at least not resort to manipulation. such a shame too and I hate that I was one of the people who got suckered into feeling bad for her, lessoned learned

I think we need a Wins list as well, and trust me, Sonic already gave us major wins last year with the IDW comic, the 2nd Sonic movie being a massive hit even beating out the 3rd Fantastic Beasts film by being at number 2 when The Bad Guys made their debut at number 1, Sonic Frontiers was a major hit after a DISASTROUS first look courtesy of IGN, and more of the game was shown that now we have a road map for updates this year for what we're getting, INCLUDING a new story with more playable characters, imagine exploring the Starfall Isles as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Sonic Prime made it's debut last month

Everyone knew that Activision/Blizzard just see race, sexuality, and disabilities as a checkbox. Heck, for the past few years they have been anouncing that a character is LGBT everytime one of these fails happen. It was a cheap way for them to move attention from the fail to the character. The sad thing is, it worked for the most part.

Character wise, it seems like TF2 is better.
Looking back, I wonder what Valve did or was thinking when making the Team Fortress characters because their characters in TF2 were excellent. Modern Demoman isn't a checkbox, but a drunk Scottish cyclops who works at least 3 jobs and cares for his mother, while the Classic Pyro is a sadistic bitch and surprisingly sounds like her teammates. Hell, modern Medic is an insane doctor who stole someone's skeleton and somehow put his team's souls in his body.
Sad thing is Blizzard could have made some characters more interesting, such as Mercy could have been the reason why Reyes became like what he is in OW, but nope, they made her a caring doctor and made it so someone named Moira caused his condition.
Yes, I know OW characters are somewhat complex as well, but I do wish Blizzard made them more interesting and complex instead of trying to fill a checkbox on them being different at the moment.

In regards to the third entry, them getting Jennifer Hale of all people to replace was the big hole in her story because Jennifer being picked should have gotten the union involved. Not to mention they had the big money for such a big name like her but not Helena? But now it's safe to say that Helena's career is over.
Edit: small correction to the Diablo Immortal's gem thing, there was an update on that. It's *$500k+* because it turns out that once you make out a five star rarity gem, it unlocked five more slots. Each.

On an upside with the whole 343 situation, the company got a long overdue management restructure back in September. The new Studio Head of 343 is Pierre Hintz. The same guy who led the team that fixed the Master Chief Collection a few years back.
It also came out that Halo Infinite's bad launch was pretty much one man's fault. Chris Lee, who kept forcing the devs to add more stuff to the game, causing it to fall further and further behind on schedule, and then lying to upper management making the game seem like it was doing much better than it was. This was all unraveled with the infamous 2020 Craig demo. He was fired a month later and Halo veteran Joseph Staten took his place.
So I would definitely say that Halo is in much better hands now, and I feel like Halo Infinite's sparse content updates are a thing of the past with all the content the Winter Update added, along with Season 3 being just around the corner
It's good to know that Halo's getting back on track if this is true because with the bumps in the road it has for a while now, it needs some sort of change for the better.
There's a lot of stuff Josh said over Halo and the show that has been clarified but he did mostly hit the nail on the coffin.
At least when Eric Vale was announced as the voice of Ken Masters in SF6, Reuben Langdon took it in stride.
Same with Cody Simpson being announced as the new VA for Cloud Strife starting with FF7: Remake Steve Burton Cloud's previous English Dub VA took it in stride and even called Cody to congratulate him and wish him good luck.

This’s also the year where Bayonetta 3 finally released and wasn’t half-bad despite its controversies, indies got plenty of gems with Stray, Tunic, Neon White, Freedom Planet 2 and Cult of the Lamb, Kevin Conroy being honored at the Game Awards by revealing that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be his last role as Batman, Sonic having his first genuinely great 3D game in 11 years with Frontiers, and getting plenty of great or at least fun videogame adaptations in a single year with Uncharted, Sonic 2, The Cuphead Show and Cyberpunk Edegrunners.

For the Halo fail, I can't believe the producers of the TV series didn't get the help from Rooster Teeth in trying to create a great story for the show (at least learn something from Red vs. Blue). Square Enix in Number 5 is acceptable, since your examples provided us with its year's ups and downs, and the story about Hellena Taylor lying about her reasons of not being in Bayonetta 3, boycotting the game and downgrading Jennifer Hale only led to her losing everything she had - it's almost certain that she will never work on anything again thanks to this.

The game's performance is dependent on the following known variables:
- How long your play sessions are, due to a massive memory leak
- Whether you are running the game in handheld or docked mode, because the game loads lower-resolution models in handheld mode that reduce the chance of the memory leak reaching critical mass
- Not only whether you have a physical or digital copy, but WHETHER OR NOT THE DATA IS ON THE SWITCH'S INTERNAL MEMORY OR AN SD CARD - an unprecedented failure point, how does that even HAPPEN?!?
- If you're attempting to use the barely-functional co-op features or not (and no, this isn't on Switch Online, Game Freak is just as bad at netcode as regular code, as they have been for the last 30+ years)
- the position of the sun
- whether or not Mercury is in retrograde
- if the game just feels like running better or worse at the moment
- probably more factors we haven't discovered yet
Funny enough I haven’t actually ran into any of those specific bugs and glitches in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
In short, Red Vs. Blue was more Canon to the HALO franchise than Hulu+'s Halo.
Aside from the whole voice acting polemic with Helena Taylor, i still liked and consider Bayonetta 3 one of the biggest and best games of 2022 EVER. And it is even getting a new prequel game this year with Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and The Lost Demon and more sequels in the future.

6. Halo TV series in a nutshell: I don't care about any of the characters. Also, why is there Master Chief fanservice that belongs more in Magic Mike rather than an action space drama? Yes, this is a legit question I have.
5. NFTs are like a toxic ex. They're ugly and they take your money. (This isn't even gonna go into blockchain being bad for the environment. Mainly because I'm not qualified to talk about it.). And I feel sorry for Paradise Eve fans.
4. EA are the Mr Krabs of the video game industry. As in they're money hungry and they would sell their employees souls for 62 cents.
3. Voice actors deserve better and I don't like that one person dragged a serious thing through the mud for selfish gain and all that. (As for how I felt about the former before "wait, not what I'm talking about.". I was the woman in the corner screaming about the Rum Diary book and fornicate the movie and I was scared that the book was gonna be lumped in with the ugly baggage that is the film adaption. Mainly because "the movie is more known than the book").
