I am a Bengali, my maternal family moved to India in 1971. According to current history textbooks, Bangladesh gives credit of their independence to Mukti Bahini. They mention India's help but the Mukti Bahini is worshipped in their books. Even today, most of Bangladeshis hate Hindu dominant India. I feel disappointed to know that we had huge amount of land in Bangladesh, we couldn't even bring our family God from Bangladesh.

I was born in 1939, I have lived thru WWII, seen Japan aircrafts attacking Madras harbour. Witnessed how Russia helped India militarily, economically and technically through out the sixties to 90s . But for Russia India would not be in a position that it is to day. America and the western world were poisoned chalice. They had great riches but only for those countries who were their ass lickers. When India needed big construction equipment for its 5 year plans, my father who was the chief engineer in charge of these big projects had to buy heavy earth moving equipment from abroad. Only countries that were making them were America , France, and U.K. But they wanted payments in Dollars would not take Rupees. Indian govt did not have foreign reserve, so they sought the help of east European countries and Russia who gave us the dollars and in exchange took our rupees. They used these rupees for buying our fruits and veg and other Indian products, Imagine which other western country would have done this.

I am 73 & I know how USSR helped India in 1971. I also remember the build up in 1970 leading to events of 1971.
In 1964 I saw the Mig factory coming up at Sunabeda(Odisha) with Russian help. This was a corollary to 1962.
On the contrary I understood U S policy of antagonism & suppression of India vis a vis Pakistan since the days of John Foster Dulles (this name is from my memory) in 1954.
This antagonism & contempt reached peak in 1971.
Modiji belongs to my generation & he is fully aware of all these issues.

I had a colleague in Qatar who is Bangali. I would tell him that Bangladesh got independence from Pakistan coz of India. When my Grandfather tells me stories of that time I can see the fear of death in his eyes . He came here without a single Penny and with his family. Faced a lot of hardships but things are stable now

No India had developed a coordinated attack system based on little boats. The problem with US navy and UK nave was they had to strike India from distance. The US had to come from East so that part was vulnerable but not the West. UK's Force would have been annhilated. The reason being Arabian Sea is actually shallower and India's mangrove belts meant UK has to stop some miles of coast of India. It would have been massacre for the UK Navy.

Today's USA counts on drones, missiles, and bombers to subdue an adversary. Unlike WW2, it cannot win land battles against a significant adversary primarily because it hates even deploying soldiers to the battle field let alone losing any. As I said, WW2 was the last time they fought the old fashioned way. So yes, US navy and air force could have done damage in 1971, but no, the US could not have occupied any land in India for any significant time period. Anyway, as many foreign invaders discovered, why bother fighting when you can just bribe Indian politicians and officials? 🙂

Sir, very well explained. But I believe there were a few alternative answers to this also. There was a small possibility that would have pushed India for self-reliance much earlier. Also, the horrors of partition was still fresh, and there was the Indo-China conflict. Chances were (albeit small), India would have became much more militarised version, after the US interference. Something like Israel, but in Indian scope and size.

But Sir, I beg to differ partially on your analysis, because if the Americans had unleashed their wrath, we could have suffered huge losses but as we had an organized Army the Americans would have suffered losses as well until they nuked us. If the US and Europe would've have border conflicts or religiously divided people, they wouldn't prosper as they've. That's why US let itself broke into civil war once and for all so there won't be any internal conflicts in the nation in future.
And, India my friend has zero foundation for a strong nation to form. Half of our Kashmir state is in other nation's control, Most of our population want Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh to merge with India as we are all same people. Many want whole Indian subcontinent as one India, many want Islam free India.
Basically, our people are not satisfied with what they have and they never will be until they get it. Same as US people weren't satisfied with what they have in 1860's so they broke into civil war. And after civil war was overafter 5 continuous years of killings, around 3-4% of population dead, finally people got what they want and once they were satisfied, US prospered like hell.

My grandfather moved from Bangladesh to Tripura during that time. We had huge lands in Bangladesh, my grandmother forgot to bring her pot of gold as she was pregnant with my aunt. So my grandfather and the family had to start from scratch. He has hardworking man and managed by framing and raised his 4 children. I only wish if he is still alive and I could give him few of the luxury which we are enjoying because of his sacrifice.
