In the first hours of the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, the Indian Navy Western Fleet sets sail from Bombay en route to Karachi to destroy the oil storage depots so vital to Pakistan's war effort. In there way stands the Pakistan Navy and Air Force.

I'm glad you guys finally did something on the Indo Pakistani War of 71 because no offense to India, but every time they do something on this topic its very hard to take them seriously because of how unnecessarily goofy they are when they depict it on media but they do alot better when they do documentaries sometimes on this but this is true as it will ever get until india decides to make it convincing and believable enough as they do with documentaries. What we also need is something on the Nathu La and Cho La clashes or the Second Sino Indian War of 1967.

What makes this even more interesting is that Indian Admiral Nanda was born in Karachi. He also learned sailing at the Karachi Yacht club. He talks about the bittersweetness of this operation in his book.

When news of Pakistan's surrender broke, the Soviets were more jubilant than India because this was the first time that a Soviet backed nation had won against a western backed nation.

I read somewhere that even the soviet defence minister was surprised that styx missiles worked so well. It was made mainly to attack enemy ships not land targets but India pulled off an attack on land too which Soviets never thought India would be able to do. They thought India had no weapon for ship to land attack.

That is actually really impressive by the Indian Navy. One of the things that surprised me the most was honestly that those soviet era missiles actually did their job quite well.
Well at this one they were in their prime, not rotted and decrepit because they were in storage for 50 years

Like what was said, the Soviet missiles were actually pretty good for the time. The problem is that those same missiles aren't that good today and those same missiles are still being used today way past the end of their shelf life. The war in Ukraine shows just how well those old missiles are because both sides are still using them and there is only something like 20% failure when one would expect 60%+ failures.
True but evidence too why the U.S. has always taken Russia's military capacity seriously.
You must probably end up weeping if they start telling you the history of Pakistani F-104 Starfighters getting shot down by Indian Mig 21s.
This war essentially demonstrated that Cold war era American military equipment wasn't invincible. If it was, US ally Pakistan wouldn't have lost so badly.
Indian military actually gives much higher emphasis on maintainance of their equipment compared to the Russians.

thats cause US had supported Pakistan and sent its Carrier battle group into Indian waters. India didn chicken out and instead sent its own Carrierr Battle Group head on, and asked the Soviets to back em up. US didn wanna face a Indian+Soviet fleet and backed out.
Its not surprising. History is barely taught at all and there isnt enough time to start talking about other country's wars and history. Plus everyone kinda knew Pakistan was in the wrong, we were only helping them to maintain diplomatic channels with China and limit Soviet spread into Afganistan and middle east

my grandpa participated in this war as a indian air force pilot,he told me that when the Americans sent a carrier to help pakistan.they signed up for a suicide mission to destroy that carrier.thankfully the russians came to our aid and that op was cancelled

Let me share an interesting tidbit
Indian Navy's aircraft carrier INS vikrant which the PNS Ghazi was trying to hunt was not present at the port of vishakapatnam at that time to begin with, Indian Navy had already moved it elsewhere anticipating attacks on it yet several operations were undertaken by the Indian naval intelligence to fool the Pakistanis into thinking that vikrant was still present at visakhapatnam,
one of which was ordering large quantities of rations from local markets to the port, the idea was to fool the enemy spies into thinking there's a large vessel docked at the vishakapatnam port and these rations are for its crew
At the same time a destroyer INS rajput was packed with multitude of sensory equipment to emit the signals of INS vikrant and was used as a decoy,, everyday it used to sail around 160 miles off vishakapatnam
And it actually worked, on 25th November 1971 the Indian Navy intercepted a signal which was being sent from the Pakistani naval establishment to the PNS Ghazi saying :- “INTELLIGENCE INDICATES CARRIER IN PORT” and that she should proceed to Visakhapatnam with all despatch!”
This deception plan of the naval intelligence successfully managed to fool the Pakistani intelligence and PNS Ghazi into believing that INS vikrant was still present at visakhapatnam
& It was destroyed by INS Rajput by depth Charge

For this attack, the crew was sent to Sevastopol for training. After the successful attack, Nikita Khrushcev & the soviet admirals were so proud & delighted for the Indian crew that he came personally to Bombay (now Mumbai) to congratulate his Indian counterpart
Not Khrushchev. He died on 11th September 1971. Soviet Admirals did came and congratulated.
During 1971 war the president of the USSR was Nikolai Podgorny.

My father and his brothers were at war of 1971. My father was in INS Krishna. During tje war four ships of K class were together, - Krishna, Kaveri, Kukri and Kirpan. Kukri sank after being torpedo ( could not hv been Pak ). My father returned home but my class mates fathers did not. I still cannot forget them. Indian Navy did an excellent. job. My prayers always with INS Kukri officers and sailors. God bless them

@@taikaiju9753 there is a claim popular with Indian Navy officers of the time that the Kukri was sunk by an American submarine operating in the area as a warning against running another strike operation against Pakistani port facilities.
It was very likely Hangor that sank the ship.

You should read more about the task force 74 sent by Nixon to attack a democracy and protect the pakistani army while they did the bangladesh genocide during this war. Indian fighter pilots were even prepared to do kamikaze attacks on the seventh fleet if it came to that. Fortunately pakistan surrendered before that while USSR subs were already present just to thwart the US.

TBH, we didn't 'crush' them in '65. That was the one point in history where we were at our relative weakest and they at their strongest, militarily. Due to massive eff-ups by their top-brass, they made a real mess of it. Militarily, it was a stalemate, though had the ceasefire not happened, it would've gotten worse fot them. Strategically, of course, they failed at their objectives, and we stayed with status quo, so we won on that count.

This was one of the most brilliant naval attacks, using small missiles boats in a way even the original designers didn't imagine they could be used.
I have partial Indian heritage and I've made a point of action to learn much more concerning Indian history. The excellent, the good, the bad and the ugly. I have been awaiting this moment for such a while.
A lesser known engagement, and lesser known conflict which deserves more attention to inform ourselves for the future.

@@dwarfie24 Although, much of the 20th century conflicts that India has partook in are substantially informed by the Cold War, even more informed by the legacy of British imperialism and the last colonial action which was the crude separation of territories, India is not the consistent moral force within these conflicts as some are staunch proponents of.

This is fascinating! This is a part of history that most of my fellow Americans have little to no idea went on
I grew up/went to an American embassy school in the Middle East. The guards were all former Indian paratroopers and we'd hang out with them even when school was out because they had such great stories and the best tea I've ever had.

2 more incidents from this war that may be worth covering are the battle of Longewala where an Indian company of 100 men held off a regiment(?) Of Pakistani mobile infantry.
The second incident is the battle of Assal Uttar where indian centurion and AMX 13s faced off against Pakistani Pattons. One of the biggest tank on tank engagement of the modern era.

To confuse and mislead the PNS Gazi, INS Rajput was given orders to maintain a high level of radio communication to give the impression that it was INS Vikrant.INS Rajput detected underwater movements and suspected the presence of a submarine. The ship dropped depth charges in the area where PNS Ghazi was believed to be operating.

The official version of the Indian Navy is that the Ghazi was sunk by the Rajput's depth charges at around midnight of 3/4 December. However, there have been several opposing theories put forward mainly due to the confusion of dates and when the Rajput sailed out on it's mission which led analysts to conclude that the Rajput was nowhere near when the explosions took place. There have been some recollections by officers that the explosions actually occurred on 2/3 December. Lt H Dhingra of the Indian submarine rescue vessel, Nistar said that the explosions had been reported to him on 1/2 December. Though, it was later confirmed without doubt that the Ghazi exploded at 00:15 hrs on 3/4 December when the Rajput sailed out, consideration of these varying reports led to a theory that the Ghazi was actually sunk by accidentally detonating one of it's own mines when it was laying a mine-field. Ghazi presumably had commenced laying mines on 3 December 1971 and at least 2-3 mines were laid in close proximity in a linear pattern 150 meters apart and at a depth of about 30 meters. These mines had a "ship count" mechanism meaning that the mine would arm only after a preset number of ships or submarines had passed overhead. It was also possible that the Rajput's depth charges had caused the mines to arm and was ready to claim their victim, friend or foe. It has been well established that the position where the depth charges were launched was almost exactly where the wreck of the Ghazi was found so damage to the latter by the charges was almost inevitable. The clock recovered from the wreck of the Ghazi had stopped functioning at exactly 00:15 hrs, which was around 10-15 minutes after the charges were launched. However, on interrogation, the divers revealed that the hull had been blown outwards, probably due an internal explosion. One of the causes for this could have been a Hydrogen explosion, which may occur while recharging of the batteries, but if this were the case, the bodies found in the Ghazi would have been charred a lot more. Also, the possibility of an external mine causing the sinking was completely ruled out due to the amount of internal damage suffered and the forward section of the hull being splayed outward. It is more probable that there was an internal fire in the forward area where the torpedoes and mines were stored and near the torpedo tubes that ultimately sealed the fate of the Ghazi.

My grandparents remember how much he used to cry when they had to switch off the lights during the air raids. They safely returned back to India after 9 years

A small details was missed out. The small Soviet missile boats were actually towed by the larger IN warships as it had limited endurance and had to retreat at full speed after emptying the missile silos. Even Russians were impressed after they realized it.

As an American, I wish we had better diplomatic relations with India. I don't really understand why we are supporting Pakistan instead, but at least we aren't enemies. I find it odd how India has the 'support' of Russia but hates China. India would be a powerful ally, but unfortunately I don't see any sort of 'alliance' happening any time soon.
We are sort of Allies now, atleast against china.
Soviet union supported India at times when no one else was ready to, so we have always had very good relationship with Soviet/Russia.
We don't hate china and had semi decent relation with them untill the 2020 border clashes, in which our soldiers died.
After the 1962 war with china, we signed many treaties with china which both sides generally respected and situation was alright untill 2020.

Millions of bangladesis ( east Pakistan) migrated to India and asked India for help, there was a movement in Bangladesh called mukhti behini they fought pak army and asked India for help, our then prime minister called for emergency parliamentary meeting and our opposition supported the govt to help bangladesis and get involved in war. USA, nato, and all European countries supported pak. Pak had better weapons and machinery. In fact USA sent warship to destroy India but it was Russia who came in support of India so USA had to step back and India won the war. 93000 pak soldiers surrender in front of 3000+ indian soldiers ( they had wrong information that we're having more soldiers than them it was completely "art of war")

Well IN did its part and claimed it as a kill like any belligerents would in that case. However even IN personnel have admitted it was most likely a sea mine causing a premature detonation that doomed Ghazi.

The naval war of 71 was a very interesting conflict it saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in the ground attack role, it almost saw a carrier battle between the Indian navy and the US navy and the birth of the Bangladesh navy.
Operation Trident was an offensive operation launched by the Indian Navy on Pakistan's port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region. The operation was conducted on the night of 4-5 December and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels and facilities. While India suffered no losses, Pakistan lost a minesweeper, a destroyer, a cargo vessel carrying ammunition, and fuel storage tanks in Karachi. Another destroyer was also badly damaged and eventually scrapped. India celebrates its Navy Day annually on 4 December to mark this operation. Trident was followed up by Operation Python three days later.

I guess it isn't fair to compare ourselves with ukraine... even at that time, we had an aircraft carrier, anti sub warfare units, a whole airforce, big army, and a kick ass naval branch. We were not poor in terms of units. Although some of our weapons were merely ourdated. Also, ukraine is fighting to maintain it's independence. It's russia who has attacked ukraine, not the other way around. Also, putin says that all ex ussr countries don't have a right to exist. Ukraine was never a part of nato. They just wanted to be a member of EU. Putin simply denies the right of existence to ukraine. That's the whole issue.

There was nothing deadly about PAF strikes codenamed Operation Changez Khan. Indians suffered light losses. Just a few craters on runways of airfields & bases.
Then Indians retaliated and destroyed PAF jets in PAF air bases in Pakistan.
This nation ( Pakistan) never learned from their mistake as a result in 1965 they attacked India and Indian Tank battalion entered Lahore but after a treaty by UN India army came back . In 1971 they lost territory and world record of 93k Pakistani army surrender. They again attacked India in 1999 and once again they lost battle of Kargil and Siachin .

My grandfather was the Radio operator in INS Nirghat which was one of the missile boats in Operation Trident.

This shows how important large ammunition production will be for militaries in future wars - and in turn - how important it is to choose peace and multilateralism.
India will be able to match its adversaries. It looks like a good decade for Indian influence. Their ASMs are just like the ones that used to be feared during the Cold War. BrahMos I think they call it. It's like the red navy cruisers' missiles. One of those would split a destroyer in half. If India becomes a huge arms exporter to SEA , the PLA will have very limited options. Some countries have already ordered these missiles.
Precise, supersonic, long range, 1000kg of boom and I think they have a system similar to NATO reporting name Sandbox. That was an advanced system that had a Salvo of missiles flying and communicating with each other to select targets autonomously in flight. I might be wrong on that, but it's exactly what you want to sink a flotilla or carrier group
@@Chironex_Fleckeri I think the big factor is that the Chinese officers are chosen for loyalty to the regime, whomever that may be at the moment. Which means it's really loyalty and butt kissing instead of competence. Also a huge amount of corruption.
They just sentenced an officer to death for being opposed to invading Taiwan.
India's military has corruption problems, but I don't think they have they loyalty purges.

My father fought in the 1971 war. The name PNS Hangor brings back memories of the stories he used to tell me. Unfortunately, he passed away five years ago.
During the war, there were three anti-submarine frigates named Khukri, Kirpan, and Kuthar. Their mission was to eliminate the threat of Hangor.
However, India's sonar technology had a limited range, which made it challenging to detect the enemy.
My father served on Kirpan and experienced some interesting incidents:
Kuthar had some problems and was unable to move. Kirpan was assigned the task of escorting Kuthar back to Mumbai, with Khukri providing support.
While returning to Bombay (Mumbai), they did detect a submarine. Khukri launched an attack and believed they had successfully hit an enemy submarine, possibly Mangro or Hangor, although it's uncertain. There still isn't proof.
PNS Hangor experienced air conditioning issues (possibly due to damage), forcing it to surface for repairs. This helped India detect it near DIU, and then it dived back underwater.
Hangor detected Khukri and Kirpan. Kirpan, the ship my father was on, was the first target. luckily, the torpedo failed to detonate under his ship's keel.
That's when India came to know of Hangor's position.
After evading the first torpedo, Kirpan took evasive action. When Hangor fired two more torpedoes, one hit Khukri, causing it to sink, while the other missed Kirpan because they change course.
My father saw his NDA batchmates who were aboard Khukri drown. He felt helpless and I am sure it haunted him till he was alive.
Also a fun fact: during Operation Trident, the officers spoke Russian to confuse the Pakistanis.
