    And people realized this game was so bad they went back to try super paper mario and found out that they were way too harsh on it after all.
    That's the only saving grace this game deserves

    • @kutami2951
      @kutami2951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. Where did you get that?
      Super Paper Mario *started* this by being a platformer mess mash of genres. At least Sticker Star tried to be an RPG. And failed. But at least it tried instead of taking what made Paper Mario special.

    • @Gamesmarts194
      @Gamesmarts194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@kutami2951 Heavily disagree.
      Super Paper Mario was a decent game in its own right, but what heavily marred it from being better (aside from the toxic fans that don't want to give a non-RPG style a shot) was its questionable level design and the adventure itself being a few steps forgettable.
      Also how was SPM a "platformer mess mash of genres"?

    • @kutami2951
      @kutami2951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gamesmarts194 Super Paper Mario was a fanfic-worthy story with boring characters that could've been every generic overrated underrated gem game. Taking what fans thought to be what made Paper Mario unique and special (good story, partners, being an RPG, etc.) is literally what made the new games boring. Because now the new games are more of an action adventure puzzle-based game with unecessasy RPG aspects. Does that ring a bell? Oh wait, turns out SPM *did* turn Paper Mario to shit by being the precedent!
      Also, on the mash of genre stuff, you have RPG aspects to a platformer puzzle game, which also is a level-based action adventure game. And in some levels of the third world, it literally becomes a sidescrolling shooter. How is that not a mash of genres?

    • @Gamesmarts194
      @Gamesmarts194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kutami2951 For the story… I’m not gonna argue because I can’t tell a decently-written story from a bad one. Characters being a bland, I’d say that’s a bit give-or-take but I’ll agree that the general quality of characters is a step back from the two RPGs.
      Criticizing that SPM is a genre mix is complete hypocrisy though. Both Paper Mario games before hand (heck, *every* Mario RPG beforehand) have had elements of puzzle-solving and platforming. Not mixed together, granted, but that’s also because it has the possibility of breaking the pace of the game as it’s primarily an RPG. But because SPM isn’t an RPG, it CAN have a higher emphasis oh puzzles platforming.
      But again, you’re not seeing the problem the game has (and something tells me you won’t because you’re nostalgia-blind): it’s not because it’s suddenly a different game genre. (Because who would want a platformer game suddenly thrown into a party game, kart racer, or RPG? OH WAIT.) That’s such a close-minded way of looking at these things. The issue is that its change wasn’t done *well*. And it’s unfortunate coincidence that this game ended uo being not-so-well received, only except how fans have a superficial “reason” to hate the game (kinda like what you’re doing) instead of legitimate criticisms.
      Also, as someone who has played space shooters, calling chapter 4 a “space shooter” is funny. Nothing is complicated about those sections, and even without shmup experience I doubt anyone half competent at video games would call that a stark gameplay shift compared to the rest of the game. It’s barely a step above swimming, but I guess that’s super hard to wrap your head around for the average person. Good thing this SUPER DIFFERENT gameplay style only happens for… roughly half a chaper… in an 8 chapter game.
      Oh and lastly maybe it’s just me, but using the “set a precedent” argument- especially when it comes to games- doesn’t feel like it holds any water. It’s more like an obvious hindsight observation that falls apart when that pattern becomes broken.

    • @kutami2951
      @kutami2951 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gamesmarts194 Calling out SPM for not being a good mix of the genres that it mixes is a valid criticism because it doesn't do it well.
      The original Paper Mario and TTYD have very defined parts. One is the exploration, which is done through minor platforming and puzzle solving, roaming the world looking for NPCs and then the battling, which pauses that exploration to the combat part. Exploring gives you things that make you better at combat such as badges or helpful items or collectables to further abilities you have.
      In SPM, there is no exploration. The RPG aspect of the game is tacked in and doesn't need to be in there. Moreover, there is barely exploration, as the action platforming and puzzle solving serve to reach the end of that "level" which instead of being open-ended like every other location of Paper Mario before, it's linear in nature. You traverse one level to get to another, all in the same world. Like a Mario platformer. Which really doesn't help flesh out the worlds you're in because you're just hopping from motion to motion until you reach the goal in the end and then go on to the next. Hell, I'd say that the elements that make the game are also poorly made. Partners are reduced to basically tools to assist you and Tippi has an ability that is rarely used, so much so that you'd often forget she is able to reveal invisible objects and are unable to continue without a clue of what you need to do (that motion also pauses the entire action, which is also detrimental to the more active nature of the game).
      Also, before I go on, Paper Mario carved it's own identity outside of being a game with Mario on it, so comparing the genre change to Mario mainline games having side games that have *nothing to do* with the mainline ones where they race and party is a non-arguement. Also, if anything, having read this far, you should realize I hate the game because it's badly design and those design changes and decisions make it staller and boring.
      Arguably, the weakest point of my arguement was using the shooting section in the end to further prove my arguement. Feel free to discredit that part. Having said that, my point still stands that not onlt is the mix-and-match of genres in SPM done bad but also are not executed in a fun way even if we judge it for what it is at base (platform puzzle game).
      Oh, and hating SPM because it set a precedent is totally valid and based in correlations between the biggest departure of the original games and the newer ones being similar in nature than the first two games. I'm not nostalgia blinded when it comes to this by the way. The first two games were flawed in their own right with their own set of strengths and also flaws. But I can put what I don't like about them beside me because they are still fun games. Cuz I totally should not point out that starting from Sticker Star, the RPG aspects feels tacked in and useless to the game, it became a level-by-level progression and it does not handle their new mechanics well.
      I really don't care if you defend SPM because you like it. To each their own. But saying that SPM didn't start the massive mess that is modern Paper Mario is to blindfold yourself due to how you like the game to begin with, which, funnily enough, was what you were doing to invalidate my opinion. Comparing one game's changes that differ from the original in a franchise isn't being blinded by nostalgia. It's being fair. Because it is building on what is already established. Whether it did well or not is another matter entirely.
      Anyways, like what you like. I'm not changing your opinion and you DEFINETELY ain't changing mine. Just a reminder that SPM is super divisive and it came out at a time where a lot of new fans would experience it as their first game in the series after getting the Wii as their first home console ever. It's not a coincidence that the opinion and feelings of the players that grew up with the originals is VASTLY different from that of new players whose starting point was the divisive mess that teared the franchise apart.

    I remember before SPM came out, when people were making up their own partners, but in the same vein as the first two games.
    Then SPM came out, and they were Pixls that never spoke after they joined you. I missed the ones from TTYD, especially. They each had their own way of saying what they were supposed to say at that point in the dialogue.

    I don't know if they said this in the stream but,
    During the bowling ball thing with the NPC following you, when they block it, YOU GET THE BALL THING BACK. (As a thing) You have to re-fling it again, which is annoying but at least you don't have to go back and get it from the orginal spot (or pay for it). The bowling ball thing is not great in general but I feel like Emile's reaction while vaild, he wasn’t told everything. (from what I saw from these highlights)
    If he knew you only had to re-fling it instead of thinking to have to go getting it back again we wouldn't have gotten that amazing reaction

    What's the worse RPG - Paper Mario Sticker Star, or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest?

  • @StevieJ3698
    @StevieJ3698 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So here are my thoughts on the game and this is sort of covering both sides of the coin.
    First playing the game, I really didn't enjoy it. Puzzles were very infuriating and I had to look up the answers a lot especially for the desert and forest sections. Too many hidden sections that are way too obscure, especially in the Forest maze part. Forest section is way too long and tedious and for those who got past point that area on their first playthrough deserve a pat on the back. Kirsty is very poorly written and probably is the worst written paper mario character ever. Sad that Bowser doesn't say anything as well. But the Toad's and enemies are still funny and I don't mind them being the main people you interact with.
    In terms of the battle system, I love the simplicity of it as any RPG that doesn't have battles drag on is always a plus in my opinion. The stickers are satisfying to pull off the timing on and the fact the game is easy doesn't bother me either as this is a kids game after all. The fact that I am very good at timing the spinner is probably why I say it is easy though. Sure, there is no point to battling, but I think that is why it needed to be made simple and quick as then it doesn't feel like too much of a burden. I also, like Jon, never run in battles, so the run battle being broken doesn't bother me either. I actually prefer this battle system over Colour splashes
    Now I played this game last year or two years ago for like the third time and went for 100%. I enjoyed myself a lot, mainly because I knew where everything was in the game, so the puzzles were no longer infuriating.
    Having to fill in the museum I enjoyed as well. One thing most people don't know about the museum is that the thing descriptions are HILARIOUS. They were written as if they were written by a Toad who act as if they have no idea what the thing is so end up describing the water gun as a war machine and the oven as a sauna and so on. I therefore always looked forward visiting the museum. Plus the museum actually gives more info on stickers such as using the leaf in battle will give you automatic excellents for all stickers. I will agree that the reward for completing the museum is stupid, as sound test should never be a 100% reward, but I can forgive it for being able to see all the sticker descriptions
    In the end of the day, this is a game where it sucks playing the first time through, but fun when you aren't playing through it blind. I will surely come back to it again, no doubt. Thanks to anyone who managed to read this

    • @alex_-yz9to
      @alex_-yz9to 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Honestly they should have made it so the museum is somehow filled in by you FINDING the things... or at least turning them into sticker without needing to put them in it!
      Because it just makes you go "Oh great now i have to give up this thing that i dont know if its useful or not to this giant checklist and i will have to use an absurd ammount of coins to get it back to test it in battle because i cant get multiples of it"

      Battles are pointless. No experience and no leveling system, the bosses are utter crap, the sticker system is awful. Im sorry but Sticker Star is awful and IS NOT FUN. Playing a shitty game after beating it once DOES NOT make it better. Don't even try to make that argument. Sticker Star is a GODAWFUL game and deserves nothing less. It's not good and get over it

    • @StevieJ3698
      @StevieJ3698 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DirectorOfChaos9292 battles are pointless if you are doing a casual run and not looking to do a 100% run and getting all the flags or whatever they are at the end. I'm a completionist and thats how I like to play games. The more I battled the less I had to annoyingly grind at the end in getting the 10000 excellents achievement or whatever it was.
      Bosses are awful, won't argue with you there and I can't even defend it.
      The puzzles with the things are also too difficult and hence why playing the game blind is not enjoyable. I think this game, like most games, is enjoyable to play the second time when you aren't getting stuck on the puzzles over and over and you can just go through it at a much faster pace.
      I know this won't change your view but just thought I would address a few things I hadn't already.

    My problem with Emile’s story at 15:16 is that if that had happened in a different game, he wouldn’t have cared. Earthbound and the other Paper Mario games have things just as if not more tedious and “obtuse”, yet nobody ever vocally complains about them. Going back to random characters in different towns and places to get an item in a trading quest 10 items long isn’t fun either, but nobody cares because the other games are older console games and were played by more people with fewer options.
    Sticker Star was my first Paper Mario game, and I still loved it more than any other save for possibly SPM. I think that the boring, unoriginal, and oversimplified RPG combat in the first two didn’t mesh well with what they tried to do with the entire Badge and level system that was made unintuitive by the janky calculations of a point system that never rises beyond their respective caps of any multiple of 3 up to 30 and 100, the balancing was atrocious in the first and not much better in the second especially in terms of each item taking up one of ten slots in a puny inventory, the completion rate relying on a slew of recipes that take constant trial and error without a guide and can cost extremely rare items, some of which cannot be obtained again without the horrible RNG Li’l Oink farm, the pit of 100 trials actually being a thing, and anything else I forgot since I haven’t touched either since my first play through of them. They’re both overrated and nostalgia-based schlock that didn’t know what they wanted to do with themselves even when Mario RPG was already a thing and was vastly better than either.
    Sticker Star was a short but fun game to kill time with. It isn’t a full-blown RPG with the typical quests and a storyline done countless times before told with new characters; it’s a unique thing that took a step away from the others to make a handheld mini-RPG that was accessible but still challenging. It taught me a lot about resource management with the Sticker system which ended up helping me a lot in other more devoted RPGs, and it was a game that succeeded at being easy to pick up and put down after a short while or a long day of play. Emile being an idiot and not remembering where an item is or that most RPGs are literally built around searching for specific items in certain places that require searching is his fault, not the game’s.
    It isn’t like the other games, and it shouldn’t be treated like it. If people can like SPM for being different, then this is the same. It’s not a giant undertaking of a full story-driven RPG. It’s a casual game that derives heavily from experimentation over linear progression.
