How to clean Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) 2016-2021 Chevy Malibu

- How to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor on a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. Check engine light on the dashboard came on to start the winter went to Auto zone to find out the code was a P-1101 error code how i have a step by step to get it done yourself and save a couple bucks. Everything i used in the video will be below they are affiliate links and helps the channel
Steps to success
Pry out the red locking clip
Disconnect the harness connector
Remove the two T-15 screws
Remove the air air flow sensor
Clean or replace and repeat the steps and reversal
*its important to wait 30mins to an Hour to completely dry or it could cause damage to the computer & engine and create a bigger problem

Good video! I cleaned my MAF because I was only getting 7km/L even if I baby the car in the Ecozone. Now back up to 11/12KM/L which is 26-28 MPG.

Wow I get like 38 to 40 mpg in my Malibu 2020 but I am driver in the country so maybe that’s the reason
My 2016 is idling really rough and jerks a lot. Do you think that could be a MAF sensor? My check engine light came on but my dad said it was just a sensor and he cleared it 😒 but I am also ordering an o2 sensor. Any suggestions? My car does have 122,xxx miles

I just put a new mas and an air filter but the check engine light is on and reads the same problem…the car rides fine what else could the problem be?
alil off subject but I use the FIXD code scanner.. It tells you everything you need to know n it's not expensive
Also keep battery disconnected for 15min will get light off
ok so when your chck engine light comes on how does thateffect the car if its the mas flow i mean why is it that it would go bad to cause your check engine light to come on in the first place..

To be honest I did spray a light mist inside of the port that I didn’t show on the video but you have to make sure everything’s is for sure dry before you reassemble everything. I waited a while then wiped with microfiber towel just to be sure
is the one of air flow issues is delay the start engine?
What about code P0172?

I'll keep that in mind for the next video I appreciate it but yeah the light went off, if yours doesn't the replacement is the same process and cost around $97 for a new sensor

Hey so I have code p1101 my car loss acceleration, the engine revs but the car creeps.. do you think this is why
It can be the first thing to look for it’s usually this, but if your losing power you probably need to replace it instead of cleaning it, the part is like a $100 with taxes and you’ll do the same steps to replace. Clean is the cheap fix but replacing it is worth it if that’s the exact code that’s popping up

Cleaning the throttle body works also. Thats the path I took. After watching your video I will clean my mass flow sensor just to be safe fam. I subscribed to your channel!!!
It’s funny you say that I do agree I’m dropping a video soon about that cause the light came back on and I had replace the part but decided to clean the throttle body as well since I was already under the hood and the car is running like a champ now and thanks a lot man I appreciate the sub. I had to leave a comment because I just did everything you said to do in the video the check engine light did stay on so I went back inside and told my dad and he said to disconnect the battery I did and ta-da it worked. Thank you so much I recommend this video guys
Glad to know it worked out for you, is was another trick you could’ve used to get the engine light off but it works that way as well I just didn’t wanna disconnect mines but either way I’m happy for you 😏let the Malibu be great again lol

Thanks for the video. My 2020 check engine light keeps going on and off. That dang p1101 code. AutoZone sold me the same cleaner. Gonna try to clean my sensor tomorrow.
You’re welcome and yeah you’ll be surprised on how common that code is. I did the clean first but tbh the replacement sensor is so cheap like less then 30$ you could just replace it. Only mentioned that cause I cleaned mines then it went off but a couple weeks later it happened again and I changed it out an haven’t had the problem since

I feel so handy for a lady. Local autozone said I needed to replace because it had the same code. I didn't want to pay for parts and labor so to the internet I came.
Seen a couple forms that said try cleaning it first so to TH-cam I came.

@Theerealanthony it's looking like I'll have to replace the part. I took it apart and cleaned it. Put it back together, and the check engine light was still on. I disconnected the battery and reconnected the negative and the engine light is still on.
I found the part on Amazon for $45 so once it gets delivered I'll update 😆

When you replaced the part after it can’t back on did u have to relearn the car
Yes I've heard and it worked for me just to drive the car I have seen it go off on its own once the car moves for a couple of mins putting it on a code reader might trigger that to happen faster, did you just clean or replace the part ? Cause idk if you went thru the comments but this was a temporary fix and I ended up just buying another sensor and used the same steps to replace it the part is super cheap if it don't work. I think total under 30$ the part like 20 but if you choose to clean it you know you gotta buy the spray

My mpg is only 22 in city and not driving fast. U think this would help and cleaning throttle body flap and sides?
Could definitely help if it hasn’t been checked cause it can get a lot of dust in stuff in there. Do you have any codes showing ? Might have something fuel ejector wise that’s killing your gas. I didn’t experience bad gas mileage well at least I didn’t notice it
@@Theerealanthony I just bought this dam car like 45 days ago and it seems good everywhere just not getting the mpg it should and the 2 to 3 shift is like delayed. Not slipping but like it don't drop the rpm to the next gear fast like the other shifts it kinda hangs up like it's stuck for a second. I hope I don't owe 12k on a shitty ass car lol. It's under 95k miles and my cousins got cruze with almost same engine and same exact trans that has 223k and still runs and drives, so I went for this. Kinda wishing I didn't
@@TheMuskyMafia damn bro first congrats but I agree I hope not either, random thought but have you looked at the color of that transmission fluid since you’ve had it ? And it’s something called a throttle body not on this car I had the issue but I know cleaning that out as well with a cleaner specifically helps gas mileage as well. But I think that shifting is something completely different. I’ve noticed things every now and again switching from drive to reverse when backing in it does something weird but I’m not sure if it’s the same thing you experiencing? But hold on your saying you replaced sensor in this video in now your experiencing those issues?
I pulled out the little red pin (when you said don't worry you break it) and the small black tab underneath it snapped off.. any idea what I can do about?
Are you meaning the piece you stick the red pin inside ? the harness or the sensor piece snapped off?
@@Theerealanthony yes... The black piece you push down inside the red piece and I can't get the wires unplugged for anything 😭
@daniellenicole6316 okay meaning you just can't pull it off the sensor or it's broke ? If you can't get it off just grab from the sides it's going to be stuck like that the first time being replaced, you could always unscrew first if you think that would give you a better grip but you'll still have to take it off to change it or clean it

@@daniellenicole6316 honestly I would like to see exactly what your talking about cause yes I assume you can still pull it off but then again it sounds like you may need a new harness connector if it's broke I would think it wouldn't hold like it should with a piece missing
I'm having the engine power reduced I checked fuses I got 2p17 chevy malibu if I drive on freeway it will pop up at high-speed but if I turn off car for 10 seconds it will go away but then come back

Might I add that it is always better to reset the ECU, That way you know for a fact if they easily pull that code again then you need to replace your sensor. Also it's good to replace the air filter at the same time

You can take it off with the scanner aswell if it comes back just replace it

So I start my 2020 Chevy Malibu Lt runs fine till I put it in reverse or drive as soon as I let go of brake the car jerks and engine shuts off anyone know what this is I have no engine lights coming on beside change oil warning???
Mine is doing the same but without turning off and I had a check engine light recently but then it went away

@@Martin-sq2rz if you have not done that then it’s your gears on the transmission have wore out that’s what happened to mine I have to pay 6 grand to get a new transmission put in
My T15 bit is too small
I would assume you have a different year then mines cause that’s definitely the screw size I had to buy the tool cause I didn’t have it.

Sometimes engine stays until you drive the car few miles so it clears up
I did notice that I did some reading where they were saying drive it a couple miles to get the code reset it’s self

Just seeing this but I have experienced a jerk when switching gears when the auto stop is on, not sure if that’s even connected. But I haven’t lost power or any shaking. If your meaning when after replacing it it does this please write me back in let me know ?
@@Theerealanthony thanks for replying, I got it fixed by simply spraying MAF cleaner. now my car is running like new! if they issue restarts in the future ill buy the sensor itself.
