    So extremely rare to see on TH-cam someone explain something without the fluff and unnecessary drama to make you watch a 10 min video. Give this man a GOLD TH-cam play button NOW. But the sad fact is TH-cam reward those who game the system, weird isn't it.

    I cleaned mine, and it worked for another 5 months, but the problem came back. I performed this test and the engine kept running. Thank you for creating this video! So at this point it is likely to be a bad MAF sensor.

    Thank you a million times for this vid. My 2004 F250 5.4, bought new, was having issues losing power uphill and under load at 85K mileage. Took it to four mechanics over the last 1.5 years. No one could figure it out. One told me the truck's engine wasn't powerful enough and that's just the way it was built. Not! I've driven and towed with this truck since 2004 and never before had this problem. The most recent mechanic at a Ford dealer said it was the transmission and wanted to take me down that rabbit hole but I intuitively knew that wasn't the problem. I had already taken it to a good transmission specialist and he found nothing wrong with the transmission. But, then I found your vid and, sure enough, the sensor was bad! $140 cost to replace and I am now driving with no power loss and ability to tow my horse trailer up hill on the Interstate beautifully. Just as it was built to do!

      A genuine MAF sensor should almost always be a dealer part or if you can find a genuine, OEM one online somewhere else for a bit cheaper and they always are a bit expensive. As the man said, $140 sounds right. Mine was $118.
      I imagine if the rest of us got one of the most vital parts for our vehicle at Kmart, or Temu or where ever it is you shop, we would have got it for 20 bucks also.
      You left that comment thinking "these people are idiots" and looks like you're the real genius here, no doubt.
      I wonder where that sensor of yours, the new one, wonder where it was made.

      I have Cx5 2014 sport, 6speed, 135,000 miles, I've had spark plugs & tune up, misfire coil wire #2 changed. Ran well, for two weeks ago, I recently noticed some hesitation & jerking again, upon stepping on the gas going up a hill, was only able to go 5 to 10 miles smh. I ordered the MFA oem part, and hopefully, this will fix the issue. The car has been to 2 garages, totaling $500, and I've heard hope its not the engine or something else from them. Thanks for your video❤

      Same story here with a 2016 Kia Soul+. One lone misfire on cylinder #2 code, that never came back. So no codes to go on for 6+ months. Changed plugs, coils, battery, filters, cleaned fuel injectors. Took it to 3 repair shops. Spent $$$$$$! Last shop said maybe it's in Limp mode with no code? Or maybe it's the transmission? Called the Kia dealership twice $200 to put it on the first level code reader, $+++ after that! Kia even said maybe it's beyond repair! 😢 At 133,000 miles!? It went from great car to 40 mph tops, then to 20 mph tops over 6 months. Won't climb the smallest incline. Jerks, rough idle, can't press the pedal down even halfway way or it starts knocking under the middle passenger's side. Barely no forward power, and jerky Fuel economy dropped from 30 to about 10 mpg. Runs best upon starting for the 1-2 minutes between "cold" & "neutral". Doesn't go over 2000 rpm. Seems like it doesn't shift out of second gear. But no codes! Just a quickly flashing oil light after it's been running for awhile, but I've checked the oil dozens of times & it's always full. A lot of weird symptoms! I'm gonna try this MAF test & see if it's that!

    • @johnathanrice3569
      @johnathanrice3569 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You should not do this because the battery acts as a capacitor (voltage spike dampener). The alternator will generate more voltage the faster it spins far in an excess of 12 V. The battery is there to absorb the voltage spikes and distribute an even 12 V to the electronic components that can’t handle more than 12 V. The car actually runs off the battery. the alternator keeps the battery charged. But the car does not run off the alternator.

      Don't run without your sensor. That sensor is designed to measure airflow. Yes, your vehicle runs for now, but unregulated airflow will throw off the air fuel ratio, resulting in an offset spark resulting in long-term engine damage. If you haven't replaced it, I highly recommend you do. I'm a mechanic and see this all the time.

    If you read the schematic you'll see most MAF sensors contain a temp sensor as well. The correct way to diagnose is to disassemble the connector and remove the MAF signal wire. Reconnect the sensor and drive while watching your fuel trim numbers. With the signal wire disconnected the ECM will substitute values so it can run without the MAF signal. My rig showed LTFT (long term fuel trim) numbers high while driving. Plus 10 to 15 percent added fuel. With the wire disconnected the fuel trims were normal plus or minus 5. Replaced the MAF sensor. The ECM relearned the correct fuel trims during the next cold start warm up. This test is more accurate than just guessing like this video shows.

    I was going to take my 2008 Pontiac to a shop to put the mass air flow sensor on a new one and a emission evaporative position sensor showed a leak that I know where’re it is exactly. But the shop wanted to charge me $700 for labor. So I looked on TH-cam. Thank you cuz you saved me money on the mass air flow sensor. And now I have to look at how to fix the gas air leak. It was so easy to put on a new Mass airflow sensor.

But as soon I reconnected the connector the idling and acceleration issues were resolved. Its driving much better. I was going to replace all the spark plugs, fuel injectors.. you saved me lots of money.
    FYI a few months ago thoroughly cleaned the throttle, same results bad idling and acceleration. I guess by unplugging the MASensor while the car is turned ON it reset its reading.. Im very happy now..

    • @solam
      @solam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the car doesn't turn off your maf sensor is bad or the connector is bad
      if u have a rough running engine when the sensor is connected cleaning it might fix it but if the engine doesn't stop at all when u dissconnect the sensor then your maf sensor is bad
      Because maf sensor cleaners clean the sensors and they work only if the sensor was already sending signals or working poorly atleast
      If you pull the connector and it turns off then the sensor is working "even if it was working poorly it would turn off"
      It will stay running if the sensor is bad
      This is my thought about maf sensors if anyone thinks that am wrong pls correct me 😁

    • @DekGT5mad
      @DekGT5mad ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The idea of Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner is not to fix a faulty MAF, it's to KEEP IT CLEAN so it doesn't crap out.
      Another sign of the MAF being dead is the car running rich, and I mean halve your fuel economy rich, blowing fuel smoke by the bucketload and getting worse as the throttle is opened more. Plugs often foul and cause misses within 50miles or less.
      Contrary to popular belief due to a "Pimp my mum's car" kids show from England, check engine light doesn't necessarily just mean a faulty O2 sensor! 😂 😂 😂

    • @jlcastille9017

      That's because this video will cause viewers who are inexperienced to misdiagnose the problem. This particular vehicle may or may not represent a small percentage of engines (or it's a very old model without O2 or MAP sensors) as most engines WILL CORRECTLY NOT KILL the engine when the MAF is disconnected (I haven't seen an engine that would die regardless if the MAF was good or not). When disconnected, the ECU will go into a default mode where it will rely on other sensors such as the MAP and upstream O2 sensor (A/F ratio sensor on newer cars) to calculate for a 14.7:1 air/fuel mixture and continue to run. Apparently, "Proclaimliberty2000", is not a mechanic and will cause more problems than help and was wise to add that long disclaimer. He may have good intentions or may be deliberately screwing with people; I don't know but I have nothing to gain by advising that no one trust him when it comes to engine diagnosis. In this day and age, four things are needed to reach a 100% absolutely correct engine diagnosis (although less will do in some cases). Those are: 1.a scan tool that is able to read live data and display freeze frame data, 2.an oscilloscope, 3.the factory car specific service manual or access to your vehicles specifications/values for parts that may be causing an issue and 4.at least a general understanding of the mechanics and the CAN Bus OBD II system that exist in all vehicles today (OBD II codes are the same for all car manufacturers, unlike the older OBD I systems). Hopefully, you'll at least watch a few other videos. You can't trust the first one you watch on You Tube without sometimes regretting it or worse, creating more problems. Good Luck!

    • @jlcastille9017
      @jlcastille9017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a short 2 minute video (I have no idea who the channel belongs to nor do I have anything to gain) that advises if you have an issue that causes your vehicle to start, then it stalls; disconnect the MAF. If that corrects the problem and the vehicle continues to run with the MAF disconnected, then the MAF sensor is bad and needs to either be replaced or in some cases, cleaning it properly and with the correct cleaner (MAF cleaner, electronic cleaner, brake cleaner, etc) may correct the issue. The reason is that the bad MAF sensor is sending incorrect data to the ECU but by disconnecting it, the ECU can't use the bad data (either very lean or rich condition/engine needs a 14.7:1 A/F mixture to properly combust) that is causing the engine to die, so it then relies on other sensors. Hope this explains the many dislikes here and helps. th-cam.com/video/M1m-n5rxuQs/w-d-xo.html

    I unplugged my MAF and my engine ran crappy but didn't shut off. Cleaned the MAF sensor and plugged it back in and it ran fine. I have to question about the engine shutting off by just unplugging the MAF. Just clean the MAF and see how the car runs. Check the vacuum hoses etc. that can cause a lean condition. Check some other TH-cams for other things that can cause an engine light associated with the MAF.

    The MAS will also stop working if it is dirty. On a Yaris take out the two screw and it lifts out. If covered in dirt clean using a sensor cleaning spray. If the contact is already clean you'll require a new one.
    1/ Spray the sensor and the two contact point hidden near the top of the sensor lid and allow 5 minutes to dry. 2/ repeat the cleaning process and leave for 25 minutes to thoroughly dry before re-installing it. Do not touch the actual sensor with anything, just spray. Be careful to prevent spraying into the electrical harness contacts.

    Just subscribed. Great video, extremely helpful! My only single piece of advice, take it or don't as it won't hurt my feelings (I hope someone can learn from my mistakes), would be to turn the ignition switch to the off position before connecting or disconnecting ANY sensor. I have left vehicles running before while messing with sensors with no issue but on JUST ONE occasion I was messing with a MAF sensor while keeping the vehicle running and it sent a power spike to the PCM, then I had to deal with that... With the ignition set to off before messing with any sensor avoids this from ever happening. Hope this helps. Again, great video.

      How did you fix the power strike to the pcm. I'm having the same issue. I unplugged fuses while the car was running then I heard a click click sound. I put the fuse back in and the click sound stopped. But now my car has a check engine light with the obd scanner reading a maf problem. I have changed the maf sensor, ignition coil and spark plugs, but still the check engine light is on and obd reading is saying maf. I think maybe my pcu is tripping and needs to be reset or it takes time for the computer to relearn and reboot.

You are right in a sense that maf sensor is sometimes the scape goat and not the issue, because the communications are all inter related and inter connected and dependent. Throttle body doesn't have a sensor so the computer blamed it on the next thing that does.

    Not necessarily. Could be dirty .Air box lid could be loose also. Loose or incorrectly installed intake air duct will also trip a code. Short term fuel trim will be around 12 to 13 which is way too high. Good trick but wont really diagnose issue or fix issue on a lot of vehicles.

    My mother in law's Ford Taurus would not start and I was able to get it to start by disconnecting the mass air flow sensor.
    I took the sensor apart and wires and junk stuck on them. Some chipmunks had gotten into the air filter box.
    I put the sensor back in after I blew the stuff out and it started again when the sensor was reconnected.
    Good video. Happy Motoring.

    Fantastic video!! Simple, easy way of determining if it's bad. Issues could simply mean it needs to be cleaned.

      @@stevegarcia1796 that's in most cases it needs to be clean not necessarily replaced

      @edwingarretson4129 You would think that he would have mentioned that you could try and clean it. A can of MAFS cleaner costs $6. I'm going to try that first before I go get a new one. Now that I'm thinking about it I'll probably go buy one even if it works so I have it

    In some cars the engine will not die because the ECM has a predefined fuel trim for when the air calculation fails. It will just run really rough!

    Years ago, a GM tech showed our class a simple trick of using the handle of a screwdriver and very gently tap the mass if the engine changes rpms or stumbles, replace the mass.

    I've been an auto mechanic for over 20 years. Many of the problems I see daily could have easily been avoided by simply following the vehicles maintenance schedule. I use a program on my computer called Automotive Wolf car care software to keep track of all the maintenance for my 3 cars, a truck and even a generator. It automatically can send you text message reminders when any type of service is due. Two of my vehicles have over 200,000 miles and have never needed any repairs. Want to save money? Follow your maintenance schedule!

      And how is a sensor going bad going to be prevented by normal maintenance?

    FANTASTIC TIP....What other ENGINE SYMPTOMS, besides the CHECK ENGINE ICON TURNED ON, could be signs of a BAD MAF SENSOR ??? TY !
