This song literally changed my life. I was 13 years old. I lived in the middle of nowhere in the South Eastern US. It was the Bible Belt, and I knew that world was not what I felt. I found Sepultura through a friend who had their Chaos AD cassette tape and let me listen. Song 1. Refuse/Resist. I was completely floored. I couldn't wrap my head around this. I had barely heard metal as a child, and my super religious parents would not allow me to listen to anything besides classical and church music. I asked to borrow the tape from my friend. I learned every lyric of that album (which I can still recite for the most part). My friend let me keep that tape, when I told him what it meant to me. I listened to it all the time. It seriously changed my life. I learned to ask so many questions, and to look beyond what I was being programmed to be (a minister, yes at 13). I was an alien in that world, and Sepultura was the thing that got me through my darkest days (I won't go into details.) I discovered activism through Sepultura, which has been a large part of my life especially concerning anti-war, anti-racism, and environmentalism. I learned to question the religion I was being forced to partake in. And I wish that one day a Sepultura reunion would happen, but we all know that is seriously unlikely.

One of my fav metal bands from the 90's. Max is a legend, and Soulfly was sick too. Brazil really had a strong presence in the metal scene. Ratamahatta is one of my fav songs, funky.
The heartbeat at the start of the song is Max's son Zyon, who was born at the same time as the album's release, Max's wife Gloria came out on stage with Zyon when i seen them live for this album, have been a fan of Sepultura since their first EPs.
I worked in a skate shop in my late teens in the mid to late 90's in Phoenix AZ. Max (who lives here) his wife Gloria and her son Dana (who sadly passed away) and Igor (his brother / drummer) would come into the store pretty frequently. Max always wanted custom ordered Vans shoes lol. Super cool people. They would leave us demos, tickets etc. One of my coolest moments!
for me the big 4 in thrash metal should be Metallica, Slayer, Sepultura and Pantera (i know a lot of people dont consider Pantera thrash but i dont care lol)
I'm a huge metal fan. More thrash than other sub-genres of metal. The thing I've noticed about thrash metal....it's the sub-genre that has more "realness" than the others. Like....I enjoy death metal (Death, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Decapitated, Vader, Behemoth, etc.), power metal (older Sonata Arctica...etc. (haha drawing a blank)), and black metal (Mayhem, Carpathian Forest, Bathory, etc.). But thrash is different. I mean Slayer is not so much as realistic as other thrash bands, but they are one of my favorites of all time. Even have a tattoo of them. But you have bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Testament (have a tattoo of them, also), the aforementioned Sepultura, Anthrax, Pantera (although I don't really care for them but respect their music), Nevermore (my favorite band of all time and have 2 tattoos of them)....the list goes on and on. The thrash bands, in my opinion, played closer to the vest of real life and still brought heavy to the table. I think, at this point, you guys should check out Testament. They're like Metallica style wise but a little more raw. "First Strike Is Deadly" and "Burnt Offerings" are good starts. Also....considering Sepultura....check out "Dead Embryonic Cells"...or anything off of their album "Arise." Sorry I'm long winded...just really appreciate the genre!
Some good old brazillian bands: Sarcofago, Krisium, Korzus, Torture Squad, Attomica, Executer. And some new: Nervosa, Crypta, Hatefulmurder, Voodoopriest, Jackdevil, Losna, HellLight ... Hope you like it.
The Max Cavalera era of Sepultura is perfection. Any Sepultura after that is basically a tribute band at this point. Max is an incredibly prolific songwriter who has fronted MULTIPLE bands.
everytime when listen old school 80s metal or 90s punk , always bring me some happy school day memories , to me getting older, music taste getting softer , now day i like simple heavy riff and non scream type of vocal,i mean at least can hear the lyrics ,when was young always metal , at one points almost like your music taste heavyer than you ,so im cooler, everyday in school share or show off what heavy music and guitar riff you learn ,we keep doing those silly things everyday, turn to like a competition ,try to impress girls, girl always the main reason, make you try hard to learn ,thats really improve your guitar skill, but thats not improve skill about getting girl,im really missed my school day, so happy , nothing to worry, no pressure at all , thats why my english so shitty. and still not get the any girls anyway .damm good old day!

7:00 - Muito legal a ponte entre Motörhead e Sepultura. Acertaram em cheio! O nome da banda (Sepultura) é inspirado no título da música"Dancing on Your Grave". O Max é fã do Lemmy e, inclusive, o estilo vocal dele nasceu da tentativa de imitar o estilo do Lemmy. Adoro ver o pessoal descobrindo o Sepultura! Um abraço, do Brasil! o/
Brazilian police and the south american ones in generally specially at that time was very, very desprepared, corrupted more than ever, so these songs was kinda war songs that we use to listen at that time to live through the day, day by day.
This is as apt as it ever was as social political art. I went to this tour live and related as finally metal was poor and not middle class whining and Satan BS.

Also got him a sick nickname.

Nah, bro. The big 4 are the big 4. However, if you were to pick a big 4 beyond THE big 4, it would be Pantera, Sepultura, Testament, and Overkill.
I was one of the cameramen, it was fun!
São Paulo 94 estádio do Morumbi ... Eu tava lá na plateia 😅😅😅
This song is most appropriate in these dark times!
My first concert was Sepultura on their Chaos AD tour, which has this song. I was 15. Opening bands were Clutch and Fear Factory.
Fear Factory was the shit...
The nineties where epic!!!
If this song and video doesn't make you want to get up and break something you're either dead or old.
For those who don't know, the intro of this song is the heartbeat of Max's son, when his wife Gloria was pregnant
thats kinda gay bro ngl
@genossenpedro no
How could you guys just sit still while listening and not head banging at the same time? Beyond me
Refuse Resist is an anthem!
BTW their last album "Quadra" sounds better than anything that max made after he quit Sepultura
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAHAA
Little bit of trivia: the heartbeat at the begining of the song belongs to Max's baby.
Unedited version 5:00: "No-mans- land, what is this s**t?"
