So I just completed everything he showed in the video and so far so good. My trackpad had gotten some liquid down in it and kept going haywire, but his video completed in its entirety took care of the trick for me. A couple of things to note: A) I wasn't worried about the warranty since my MBP is from 2010/2011 B) He doesn't show you how to remove the battery, so I watched a similar video that shows how to do that. You WILL need a Y-type screwdriver bit to remove the battery. I ran to Wal-Mart and picked up a $7 screwdriver and 44 bit set that happened to include small enough bits and Y-bits for all the various types of screws you need to do this C)I used the 70% rubbing alcohol, not 91%. Now, after putting everything together, and working at it for 20 min. or so, I haven't noticed my computer going haywire and the mouse wanting to go buggy on me. This was extremely helpful and way cheaper than taking it in somewhere or even buying a new trackpad on eBay.

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" and recently had the erratic mouse behavior which is VERY annoying. I watched many different TH-cam videos and read websites on how to fix the issue. None of the suggested fixes from the videos/websites worked on my MBP. I then came across your video. I was hesitant at first to submerge my entire touchpad in a bag of alcohol, but then I thought this really was my last resort for a fix. I was ready to purchase a new touchpad so what could I lose.
I left my touchpad in the bag of 91% Isopropyl alcohol (the store didn't carry any % higher than 91%) for about 1 minute and then took it out and left it in front of a fan for a few hours. I then re-installed the trackpad and booted up the machine. I have been running my MBP for about 4 hours now with no issues. I believe your fix has fixed my erratic mouse problem. THANK YOU for making this video!!!
I think my issues all started when a droplet of sweat landed on the edge of the touchpad.
    Great video!

Thank you it work perfectly. I didn't take the touchpad out, I carefully moved the battery without disconnecting it. I used a Q-tip and alcohol around the edges top and bottom of the touchpad. I let it dry for 30 minutes before I powered it back up.

I am so very appreciative Abraham, you are so wonderful to share and I love your humor and matter-of-factness. I thought I would try and just clean the trackpad with the alcohol carefully just on the surface first, without dismounting. IT WORKED!!! BRAVO!!! I think it just needed a cleaning from toast/butter mornings just saying - but yay - without your video - never would have done this with alcohol! Thank you.

Dude, if you came up with this on your own, you may be a genius. This worked like a champ. Followed the video to a tee. 8 minutes in the 91% alcohol bath. 2 hrs of drying time. And boom! Completely fixed the issue. I didn’t spill anything on the trackpad. It just started wigging-out. I’m guessing a piece of dust or lint or enough dirt and grime from my hands finally worked its way down there. Whatever it was, its gone and my trackpad works like new. I too raise my alcohol filled ziplock baggie to you in honor of your genius. Thank you for sharing on youtube!

    Thanks a bunch!!!
My cursor was completely still, moving only when I used 3 or 4 fingers. Followed your instructions and it worked! Well, not at first. Don't know why as soon as I reassembled it, it didn't work (same problem as before). I closed the Pro, went to work, grabbed a USB mouse to use it while I ordered a replacement part and then it started working again! I don't see why the USB would fix this, specially considering that I coughed water on the pad last night. Most likely, your thing worked, so you just saved me $60 from getting a replacement one!!
As A.G. M. said, "I raise my plastic sandwich bag in tribute to you..."

Your fix totally worked. Used it on a computer that was basically unusable because of the track pad going berserk. Thanks!

to fix mine without even taking a screw out I simply pushed fairly hard

pushes the battery back down and my trackpad worked immediately
afterwards. less of a headache. Thumbs up so everyone can see this
easier fix. this is the post that save me and many more macbook pro user

Did exactly what the guy in the video said to do and it worked 100%. Guy at Radio Shack said definitely don't use the 91% IPA, I ignored him, it worked fine. Got to watch those tiny screws carefully. Few of them didn't go back in cleanly though most of them did. Mine is a 2012 MBP so I'm not too worried about voiding warranty. Definitely a reasonable DIY project.

  • @nsbrownson
    @nsbrownson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I did as the video recommended and love the results. I also had nothing to lose as the cost of a new pad isn't bad, but with this remedy there is just no need to have to do that.

  • @benjaminpatch289
    @benjaminpatch289 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Worked great for me!!! Much faster than waiting for a new trackpad and much cheaper too! I used 70% alcohol and it worked fine. Waited about an hour for it to dry.
My only suggestion is that the trackpad had a bit of wiggle room when I put it back in for my 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro and I had to re-open everything back up to make it straight. So my advice is to put the trackpad back in, loosely tighten the 4 screws that hold the trackpad on, then open up the computer and make sure the trackpad looks good and is centered etc. and adjust if necessary. Then tighten the 4 screws all the way and finish up putting the computer back together.

I stay in the UK. Got some Surgical Spirit from Boots and went through this. My touch pad is as good as new! Thanks so much! Only thing I would mention is you need to remove the battery before getting to the stage in the video. The battery has a couple of funny Y shaped screws but I managed to get them out with a tiny flat head screwdriver and elbow grease! Great fix thank you!

The track pad was working except for clicking. You could scroll and move the cursor just fine. You could feel the track pad click but it did not work. I took it apart like you showed, But I use a paper towel dampened with alcohol and cleaned the edges of the track pad and cleaned the area where the track pad goes on the computer with Q-tips and paper towels. It went from being able to click at all to working quite well! Another thing that causes this sort of problem with the track pad is when the battery goes bad and swells up under the track pad. In that case a new battery will fix it. I would remove the battery and try the track pad and see if that fixes it with no battery installed. The other thing the try is the Torque screw under the batery to adjust how hard it is to click.
    Thanks for posting this!

This helped me but you should understand you may lose your battery while removing the battery for MacBook Pro retina 15. This is how I did mine.
    1) Open the Laptop Bottom, By removing the 10 Screws.
    2) Unplug the battery, to remove power on the Board.
    3) Pour the alcohol on the trackpad where your fingers move the cursor. "Just little", do not allow the alcohol to move to the keyboard area.
4)Then use your finger to press down the left and right click lightly, to allow the alcohol to go through where the water substance went through.
    5) turn it around to let it go round to allow the alchohol to where you can not reach.
    6) Open Bottom let it stand by its side on the table and Switch on the fan to dry things Up. For (3hours..)
Your laptop trackpad should be fine without removing the battery

I used anhydrous ethanol, and alcohol conquers alcohol!
    Thank you so much!

I spilt some water on my track pad, and it started to go jittery and half of it stopped working fully. I tried drying it with a hair drier etc. it didn't work.
Just did what was instructed in the video, word for word, but only had 70% alcohol. To my pleasant surprise, it went back to working perfect! Thank you!

Hi, that procedure can be done with a different trackpad model? The one I got has a little band board with some circuits and transistors on it and two little strips of plastic circuits that go from the band board to the inside. Thank you

So when I put this back together, after replacing trackpad screws I'm finding the black tape piece was not sticking back on. I was thinking that was ok and that the battery would hold it in place but not when I start back up the cursor is stuck in the upper left corner. Any suggestions?

Water works!!! My trackpad was acting erratic for over a week after a coke spill, I couldn't find alcohol so I just washed it with water then used a hair dryer on it. Worked like a charm.

I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" and tried this on my trackpad. Worked great for the hectic mouse behaviour. Unfortunately it also confirmed that my click didn't work for good. Anyway, thanks for the great tip : it did take me a leap of faith to dip my trackpad in alcohol but turned out working better than before an hour later !

I ordered a new trackpad and decided why not give this a try. What could it hurt? I followed your steps and put everything back together. The trackpad was immediately responsive and no misbehaving yet! Thank you for this post. It it keeps working I will update and reconfirm. Thank you again.

    THIS FIX WORKS!
a drop of liquid dropped on the side of my trackpad and it started moving on its own and opening apps or moving pages etc.
I gave my trackpad a bath in 70% alcohol and cleaned the sides before finally letting it dry for an hour and then assembling it again. It has been a few hours now and still no signs of the bad behavior before. I will update if it occurs again.
    Thank you for the fix!

This worked like a charm. Used 70% alcohol because it's what I had. I tried every other troubleshooting tip and nothing else fixed it. Thanks!

worked for me. Trackpad was messing around, klicking anywhere and moving/not moving the cursor. Used pure alcohol, let it sit for 10 mins and dried it with a hairdryer. Thank you!

Awesome, and thank you...but I ran into a problem. For some reason, I can't click anymore. Or, depending on how that T-6 "screw" is adjusted, I get a little click if I really try, but not like it was before. It's almost like the battery is pressing on the track pad. I get better (but not the same) motion if the battery is not underneath the trackpad. Any suggestions?
