Back in 2017 I believe, my mac was so slow that I was going to just throw it out and unfortunately/fortunately buy a newer expensive model. I came across this vid, bought and installed the two 8gig RAM but only 1 500gb hard drive. But either way it made a HUGEEEE difference. I spent a little over $300 on the RAM and Hard drive and basically save over $1k. Now its 2021 and I still use my 2012 mac! Still fast and reliable as ever! Just wanted to come back and say thanks for the video! Saved me a ton of hassle at the time!
Hey what is you Operating system …I have a 2012 15’” …non retina …but I got a kernel panic…since then, no go …it said due to updates needed in Os …lmk what runs stable on that Mac ?
Just a quick addition, because of changing the hdd, and removing the battery connector the computer will reset the date, that may cause verification issues while installing os x, if the error pops out This copy of the install OS X application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading just click on Utilities -> Terminal, type date if the date is incorrect, use this command date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year} example date 102713122016 and hit return After that try to install again, and that's it.
Stefan Vasiljevic so that's why i kept getting that error. I was changing out the stock hdd for a 1tb ssd and unplugged the battery just to be safe. Now i know it wasn't the bootable usb that was the problem. Thanks.
Stefan Vasiljevic::I got that error message on an older model MacBook, is it necessary to unplug the battery supply???I don't think I'm going to do that on my newer MacBook Pro when I switch out the HD for an SSD.Thanks for that piece of info man, learn something every time..oh if you can answer a question about upgrading the HD for One SSD only will I still have to do that RAID striped, thing like in the video??? I don't know what that is for, seems is to combine both 250GB SSD into One.....But I'm only going to be putting only One 525GB SSD.Hope you understand my Question Thank You
Don't know if you already did it but its for combined size and speed. If you are just doing one drive you don't need to mess with raid 0 or anything like that... the performance increase you will notice will be incredible and almost like buying a newer model. Good LUck
When you boot up after installing the two new SSD's, do not install your OS X install thumb drive if it is OS X 10.11 or later. Apple eliminated the RAID option from Disk Utility in those versions. You need to boot up, holding down "Command + R" with no thumb drive installed and the Macbook will perform an internet recovery which will have an older version of Disk Utility with RAID. After you have created your RAID, power down and boot up with your thumb drive inserted and you will start the OS X install process. Took me a whole week to figure this out by accident. Also, if your OS X thumb drive installer does not work, you have the option of installing the original OS your Macbook came with and then you can upgrade to whatever OS X you want from the App store.
Dustin McGuire I installed Yosemite from USB. I’m at high Sierra now cause my photo booth program needs high Sierra but I feel like upgrading from here on should work. If I upgrade one I’ll circle back here.
If you're doing this in 2018, you don't need to add the extra SSD in place of the DVD-ROM. 1TB SSD's go for $130 and that should be all you need as your primary.
ur wrong on that man if ur video editing or doing photos ur gonna need the space bc videos take up space and if ur editing videos in 4k then yes u are going to need extra space and people don't use cd or dvd that much anymore and yes its worth it to put another extra hard drive in the DVD player spot
I installed 16gb ram and one 500gb SSD (before I saw this video) and it was soooo slow on Catalina. Downgraded OS and still slow. Need to figure this out…
Lol. Still watching this in 2020. My Mid-2012 Macbook Pro is still running like a charm on OSX Catalina with an upgraded 240 GB SDD although I just use 8 GB RAM. In this video, OSX was re-installed using a USB. The mid-2012 Macbook Pro is actually equipped with a wi-fi card (as mentioned here with Bluetooth). You can re-install the original OSX that came with your machine (OSX Mountain Lion) by pressing Command-R as soon as you power up. It will ask you to connect to a network and then proceed with network install of the original OSX on your new SSDs. You can then upgrade Mountain Lion to El Capitan and up. I went from Mountain Lion to El Capitan and then to High Sierra. I skipped Mojave and right now, I'm running Catalina. Yes, the mid-2012 MBP will run Catalina fine. Enjoy. No need for USB install and no need to purchase older OSX versions.
Just bought a MacBook pro 2012, it already has 12gb ram and 500gb HDD, thinking to upgrade SSD how much would be ideal ? Is 128 or 256 enough? I have few issues with the Mac it's heating up a lot as soon as I turn it on its showing up 50 °c and the battery is draining fast...any tips?
Another important upgrade is wrapping the hard drive cable with electrical tape! The stock cable is so thin that microscopic damage totally ruin it and make it look like your HDD/SDD corrupted. Alternatively, just put electrical tape between the cable and where it contacts the inner part of the casing and you'll be good too.
Just upgraded my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro A1278 with a Sumsang 860 Evo 512gb SSD and 16gb OWC Ram. I've kept the disc drive for now. She's running like a dream. Thanks for your inspiration and help with the upgrade
I've got the same system. I have 2 x 4GB memory in each slot. I was under the impression I can only go as high as 8GB in total. Did you have any issues using 2 x 8GB in each slot? I'm dreaming of turning it into a 16GB beast!!
@@ericjohnson7717 Check for your system in there : everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html I followed their recommendation and upgraded to 16GB on my late 2011, no issue. Cheers
@@ericjohnson7717 i just put in 16gb (8x2) and its running perfect, i can only imagine what differences ill see once i install the Samsung EVO 860 SSD.
I've just done this upgrade today, only I have 8GB ram instead of 16GB. My 2012 macbook is lightning fast now. Boots in ~ 15 seconds from power button press. Friggin' awesome!
What macbook pro do you have? My fiancee has the mid 2012 pro with the i5 and 4gb ram, and I am going to upgrade it to an ssd and probably 8gb ram. If so, what ram did you use? Thanks!
Star Lord AaronNewsted not OP but my mid 2012 has a 1tb Samsung 860 Evo SSD and 8gb of Crucial ram. Super fast boot time and even quicker to open software.
Max Branvall did the 1tb ssd work with no problem? I’ve read it only allows 500gb ssd... I wasn’t sure how that would work but who knows.. I thinking 1tb ssd and 16gb ram on my mid 12 pro i5
mitchell janusz hey there! Yeah its working perfect and did wonders for boot/startup times. I've heard that the 2012 pros only allow up to 8gb of ram, which is what I have, but you'd need to research that further.
Got a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Before I saw your vid, I upped the RAM to 8GB and I just put in an SSD. Was advised, once the drive was installed, [Cmd]-r boot, Disk Utility, format drive to MacOS Ext (Journaled), reboot [Cmd][Opt]-r which automatically sought my network (used ethernet for speed, rather than my wi-fi), it read my PRAM to verify previously installed MacOS, and automatically downloaded my new Mojave. No bootable flash drive required. In-line with OS installation it asked if I wanted to transfer my data, apps, and settings from a TimeMachine backup, which I did. No muss, no fuss. I'm only lacking the 2nd SSD. Your vid was clear, concise, professional. Thank you. I felt that sharing the OS install might benefit you and your followers.
WOW, Bro I did this OMG! It use to take me to render project from FCPX about 2 hrs! since I upgrade my 2012 Mac Book Pro i7 it took only 40min to render a 4K 125G project. The Apple store wanted $2,000.00 for the upgrade, I was like Hell No! ill look on TH-cam, and then I found you, thanks bro for this video.
Ahmad Naufal Yeah ik who Louis is. But I’m just saying that 2k for this type of thing is insane. Usually Apple would charge up to a grand for something stupid like a battery not plugged in or something like that
10:15 one more thing. For SSD, You need to enable T.R.I.M . By default, It's not enabled in MAC OS. So go to terminal and type Trimforce enable. If trim enabled, maintains and longevity of ssd.
I've replaced my HDD with a 250go Samsung EVO850 SSD on my MacBook Pro Late-2012, and the difference is UNREAL! It can't be smother and speeder than it is now! I didn't know a SSD could make that big difference
Great video. Just did this upgrade to my 2012 MacBook Pro with a 1tb Crucial SSD and 16 gigs of Timetec ram. Total was $170 and my setup is so much faster now. Had some issues restoring the new hard drive from my backup but got it sorted out
what are some of the issues you came across? and any tips? I am considering basically doing what you did with your 2012 macbook pro to mine. Thanks for any help and input.
In all my life never have I thought of asking a guy to marry me until now.. haha. This is a gem. Short, accurate, DETAILED. I'm a writer and I was able to do an upgrade by myself thanks to this!! THANK YOU.
God knows how many times I've dropped this thing off of beds. I'll never forget the first time dropping it off of my college dorm bed back in 2013; you know how high those frames are (and that I was ;^D). She makes the loudest hea(r)tsinking THUNK sound whenever she takes that plunge, but man... Took it like Marciano to the chin. Made a little indent in the corner of the screen's aluminum exterior. Honestly looks kind of attractive; the curvature of the solid shell and sparsely scattered indentations she's acquired over the 8 years we've shared. I was a Linux/Lenovo Thinkpad guy in highschool and thought that was the coolest thing ever, but man I've fallen in love with this UNIX machine. Love or hate, it's a solid machine inside and out.
Wow. I never even thought for 1 second that I could upgrade my 2012 MacBook Pro. I’m absolutely going to do this. Thanks for the vid and the helpful comment section!
Upgraded the SSD on my brother's 2011 MBP and about to work on his wife's 2012 model. Love that you can actually still upgrade these machines pretty easily compared to say, the iMacs (barring RAM).
Your processor test was lower on the one w raid because macbook pro uses "soft" raid as opposed to the old mac pros which had optional hardware dedicated to the raid process. you're speeding up your read/write speeds at the cost of some processing power. Granted, its not much processing for a heck of a lot of R/R spd, but thats whats happening. If you do game or music production which regularly max your cpu, its the industry standard to have two non raid disks, one w system & apps, the other for media storage. That way you free your processor from the raid task and free your media disk from system tasks.
Hi Stu. I do a bit of music production myself and as you said ableton and plugins are maxing out my cpu regularly! Do you reckon i'd be better to just replace my cd drive with a SSD (and use this for OS and applications) and use my original drive for storage large files/plugins etc? Thanks
+Stu Dubya sorry but you are an idiot... the overhead is imperceptible the lower score is because its an older generation i& chip. Hi Ghz but older design. The only reason one drive is used for AV is because most people haven't bothered going to a raid plus a single drive is twice as safe.
+Corey Gallagher A RAID is TWICE as likely to have an error or have a disk crash. Even the 2Gb 850 Evo Zen used can pull over 900 Mb a sec on Blackmagic solo and the 860 Evo should be even faster so the go is to put a 9.5 mm thin 2Gb HD for $100 into the DvD bay and a single big 860 Evo in the HD bay. 4Tb onboard storage for cheap!
Sorry Stephen Fry, but the true idiot is someone who starts off a conversation with the reply of "you are an idiot". What the fuck is wrong with some of you folks. Just because someone might be wrong with their thoughts or replies doesn't give, or shouldn't sound the attack alarm. So, attack me now, but know I will mute this conversation so your infinite pontification of insults and quips will fall on blind eyes.
I lucked into buying this thing in 2012. I've had it for 8 years now and spend on average 8 hours a day on it. Spent $180 got the SSHD and upgraded it to 16G RAM. Making this thing run better than anything I've ever been on. Last year the power input and magsafe plug destroyed one another, and the battery swelled up enough to make me think there was something wrong with the track pad. With $125 I replaced the battery, bought a new magsafe port, and got a different power cable. Then self installed. Other than that I've had zero problems with this thing. With all the videos on youtube I'm pretty confident that I could fix and replace anything, not board related. Best LapTop EVER!
thinking of getting a MacBook Pro?? don't even have to but a new one, get a used one and upgrade it just like in the video..That's if you're interested in owning a Macbook Pro 13" mid-2012 you can't go wrong with that model.
I bought one of these at second hand for just 400€. i7 8Gb RAM, 750Gb HD, and in perfect cosmetic conditions... so maybe you can try it if you want a really nice laptop at great price
Great video and instructions for swapping RAM and HDD to SSD. I didn't follow the whole USB part, I just backed up my HDD to time machine, swapped it for the SSD, formatted and erased the SSD from Recovery and then time machine back to SSD. I was back up and running in no time.
The downside is that a RAID is TWICE as likely to have an error or have a disk crash. Just wanna say thanks for this. My Mid 2012 Macbook Pro was practically unusable at certain times. Constant beach balling even when copying to the clipboard. Couldn't use Chrome at all as it would take almost 5 minutes to fully load. Was so sett on buying a brand new Mac even though I couldn't really spare the cash on it, then after my Sister suggested upgrading this one I came across your link. £21 on another 500GB HDD and doubled the DDR Ram from 4GB to it's maximum limit of 8GB which cost me £28. So now I have a excellent working Macbook Pro again for less than 50 quid. Once again, thanks for the tutorial on how it's done.
Bro, hands down best video out here! Thank you for your high quality and succinct video tutorial! Completed everything under 30 mins ...installing OS now! 10/10

I've done what you say in the video and upgraded my macbook pro mid 2012 from 8 to 16GB in ram and 500HD SSD, It was so easy... thanks for your video, now my macbook pro is a fast machine.
I did this on 2015 with only one change of yours. I installed Windows on the second SSD and on the First SSD I did a partition of 250/250. On the first 250 I installed the MacOS and the second 250 I make it a "slave" just to save things there from Windows or MacOS. Works really well and we are almost on 2019!

Thank you very much man!! Without this video I wouldn't have the guts to upgrade my MacBook Pro mid-2012. Now, my laptop has 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, and running on High Sierra (way better than Catalina). Thank you again! Your video is timeless.

Yes I have the same. 2012 Macbook pro 15” 2.3 ghz. Bought approx 3 yrs ago second-hand for reasonable price . Replaced the 500 hdd with a 1Tb ssd (crucial). Replaced the 2x2 ram with 2x8 (i.e. 16gb !) ram. Worked a dream until, out of the blue, the screen remained black one unlucky morning . Now at the repairshop. 🤞hope for the best....
Same laptop and same thing happened to me a while ago, it was a easy fix by the repairer and it was a sign my hard drive was failing, failed a week later and I installed a 1TB SSD. This 2012 MBP is a beast! Hope you got yours fixed.
name's ash, housewares The 2012 MacBook is the last upgradeable macbook Apple made. The hard drive, ram and batteries can be changed for cheap prices. And the cpus are very good for getting decent tasks done. In short, it’s perfect for college students and anyone who just wants a laptop as a 2nd computer that will last them a very long time (10-20 years)
I just sold my maxed out mid 2012 (15" 2.7ghz hi-res screen) MacBook Pro. It was a great computer! I will miss it, but it was time to move on. I needed something with more portability and better battery life... and the hi-res screen is decent, but it is nothing compared to a retina screen. I will never forget my 2012, though. It was a BEAST.
Better to install one big ssd, that optical drive always come in handy when you want to play/rip cds. Don't know why anyone would want to get rid of it!
Master level tip: The fastest Mid-2012 Retina MacBook are the 15 inch models. They have almost 3 times the multiprocessor speed over the 13 inch models. They also have more ports: an SD-slot and microphone in.
Awesome video dude! Still counts for my 2010 17" macbook pro! You good sir, have a new subscriber ;) one thing I also did was take out the mobo replace the thermal compound and clean the entire thing! Clean heatsink and new thermal compound helped a lot with mine!!
Nope. Apple is ass-backwards in this regard. The stick and a rather time wasting process is needed Better to buy a used drive with a clean new OSx preloaded. For 35 bucks it is worth it. eBay. (don't go higher that 30-35 bucks) High Sierra does well on a mid 2012 macbook pro with 8 -16 GB RAM. Especially well with a proper SSD.
Can confirm this works flawlessly on a 13" mid-2012 MacBook Pro (2.9 GHz, i7). I did one 1TB hard drive and 16gb RAM. I was about to buy a new laptop, but I decided to look up what was involved in an upgrade and ended up saving myself 3200$. This was as easy as it looks to do (took me less than 15 minutes start to finish). Thank you so much for not babbling on repetitively as most do, this video is concise and straight to the point. Subscribed!
Since I kept reading mixed comments re whether a MBP 13” (mid-2012) has the capability to hands 16gb RAM, since the video is a 15”, it sounds like you were able to upgrade yours to the 16gb RAM with no issues? I think further above he says the max for a 13” was only 8gb. I’d appreciate your response! :)
Just FYI for Mojave users. The Raid0 will not work if you are installing Mojave. Apparently Apple does not feel that one needs Raid0 and will not release a fix for this issue.
Big Tips before starting - put a white sheet on floor put chair over it . Put a towel over lap or apron on to catch screws you drop . Put a sheet on clean table .Have a magnet to keep screws in one place or a white clean plate . Clean hands . Use insulate mat to reduce electric shock disconnect and do not plug in power . Some suggest unplug battery while you do this upgrade . May want to vacuum using a unused clean paint brush and tweezers to suck out dust bunnys and pull out hair follicles .Oh and do not have any liquid or drinks or smoke while doing this near workspace
I replace my hard drive with an SSD last year. Made my 2009 like new. Just got my 8gb ram (came with 4) today yet to install. My question is (I’m not the most tech savvy) what is the benefit of a second SSD in the disk drive beside just more space?
Speed. That's it. Plus SSDs are way cheaper now than before, so there's no reason to stay with a hard disk drive as the second storage anymore, unless u really want to keep that CD drive, but who uses CDs anymore?
I’ve done this same exact upgrade to my macbook 2012. The question is how do you update the OS system once it is setup? Because it doesn’t allow for me to update to Mac Newest OS system. Would I have to save everything to a external drive wipe it install the the newest software them dump everything back on? Is this a method or are there more methods to updating the OS system. i did the same on late 2008..because enaught for me are 8 gigs but big bonus is just swapable battery..new battry cost just 40 euros now for it you can swap it with no any tools because it is swapable also ssd u can swap because there is cover in back to replace battery and hdd
I have same MacBook Pro MD101. My default HDD is not working. When I start I keeps booting. Someone suggested that I should shift current HDD to Disc drive bay using caddy. And replace current HDD with SSD. Also I want to upgrade RAM. My question is how can I install same Mac OS Yosemite again on new SSD? Or do I have to find another copy means serial number. Also will these modifications works? I mean will I be able to access data on current HDD after I shift it to Disc Drive? Also can you recommend which particular SSD is compatible as I don't know about SATA stuff. Also you showed making two SSD something RAID. Will I have to do it with my SSD. Is that step possible for both HDD and SSD together? Thanks
I just did this to my Pro - 16 gb Team DRAM and 480 gb Sandisk ssd I left the DVD alone for the time being. It is faster than my Latitude E6430 same specs Windows 7.
i am graphic designer and i am using 2008 15 inch unibody .. 8 ram plus ssd.. plussnew battery.. it still do all work ( photoshop and illustrator ) perfect!!!
***** apple will never introduce a matte screen in the near future. its quite evident the minute they released the retina mcbook, thunderbolt display and imac
The most important things to purchase when you get your MacBook Pro is getting the Best graphic card available . Everything else you could change but you can't change graphic card .
The point he's making is that RAM and HD can be upgraded on the older MacBook Pros but the video cards are a limiting factor because they cannot be replaced so you should look for the fastest video card you can find for the money.if buying a pre-retina MacBook Pro. His advice is sound.
I put 1TB SSD, 16GB Ram, 750GB HDD 720RPM as second internal disk thru the Optical Disc Drive... installed Bigsur Patched and I'm flying like I'm on 2020 macbook pro 💥👊🤩

danpape shredits I just did my mac today and mine is saying the same thing. Did you get it figured out why it says you may not install to this volume because it is part of a AppleRAID”?
I still prefer my 2015, but one major benefit of this setup is the option for built-in raid on the go. Speaking of raid-on-the-go, would be nice to see SSD manufacturers find a way to put two equal0sized drives in a single connection.
Lee thank you for this video. I went with a 1 tb SSD and 16 GB RAM. I didn't want to get rid of my DVD/CD drive. My 2012 MacBook Pro is ridiculously fast and excited that I only had to spend about $250 total.
Fitz, may I ask what brand of RAM you used? I just ordered 8GB of RAM but may return it and order 16GB. I have a mid-2012 MBP running High Sierra. I was thinking of buying a new MBP but may just upgrade the RAM and hhd to a 1B SSD.
@@GS-kj6ur I put in 16GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. It has been a significant improvement in performance. I think the graphics card may be starting to go, but so far so good.
@@DanaBenYehuda I just brought my old one to life with an 870 Evo ssd now I'm waiting on my 16 gig cards to come in. I'm already running 8 but after that I think all I have left to do is the battery. The ssd made a world of difference but I'm hoping the ram upgrade can make it even better

What is trim? I tried upgrading my drive but I keep getting an error, after I install the drive it’s like it doesn’t even recognize it and when I try to format it won’t give me an option for journal formatting it gives me the new format, any ideas how to correct?
TRIM can improve the performance of writing data to SSDs and contribute to longer SSD life, if supported you’d use a Terminal command in MacOS but all SSD are not supported. Now as for your other problem if you know nothing about Raid setups even more importantly the Pros (Speed) and the Ultimate Con (Total Data Loss) this is NOT the video for you, any who use carbon copy cloner or similar to clone your drives. Put the old hard drive back in your Mac, put the SSD in an external USB enclosure, start the app and follow the directions as required to clone EVERYTHING, Lol, just keep it simple. Once the clone process starts go do something not involving the computer and make sure it’s the only thing running, not required but hey you never know. When everything is done, Restart, hold the Alt button, select your SSD, let it boot, make sure everything works, turn the Mac off, now install your SSD in your Mac and you’re all done.
Not a tech guy like that, but my mid 2012 15'in Macbook Pro is so slow when I use Lightroom and Photoshop for editing, will these upgrades help me or do I need to do more?

Just a quick addition, because of changing the hdd, and removing the battery connector the computer will reset the date, that may cause verification issues while installing os x, if the error pops out
This copy of the install OS X application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading
just click on Utilities -> Terminal, type date
if the date is incorrect, use this command
date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}
example date 102713122016 and hit return
After that try to install again, and that's it.

It worked I was trying everything!!!
Ironically I have the CD installer for older OS 😂
Create an tutorial on TH-cam ): please
Still says "You may not install to this volume because it is part of an "AppleRAID", trying to install Mojave.
Tony Lam thank you
Tony Lam but the RAID0?
ur wrong on that man if ur video editing or doing photos ur gonna need the space bc videos take up space and if ur editing videos in 4k then yes u are going to need extra space and people don't use cd or dvd that much anymore and yes its worth it to put another extra hard drive in the DVD player spot
how about if i do it in 2019? :)))

I installed 16gb ram and one 500gb SSD (before I saw this video) and it was soooo slow on Catalina. Downgraded OS and still slow. Need to figure this out…
@@joeblow1942 hi a quick search told me the max ram is 8gb ram 1600MHz DDR3 for the 15 inch mid 2012 macbook pro running on Mac os Catalina i7.
Great insight and good to know with Catalina! Thanks

Tom B is this working with MacOS Mojave?

With all the videos on youtube I'm pretty confident that I could fix and replace anything, not board related.

when did they come out with the silver sides of the screen ?
it's a matte upgrade option for the early macbook pro models
i miss the matte display
Not replacing my matter MBP until they release a new one
***** apple will never introduce a matte screen in the near future. its quite evident the minute they released the retina mcbook, thunderbolt display and imac
randomrazr Yea the mat display was fresh
You can always get a matte/anti-glare screen protector. I know it's not as good as a truly matte display, but still better than a glossy display
you can also get a case and USB lead for the DVD drive. it fairly cheap and you will have a DVD drive as well.
The most important things to purchase when you get your MacBook Pro is getting the Best graphic card available . Everything else you could change but you can't change graphic card .
Since everything is now soldered into newer models this is really out of date advice.

“You may not install to this volume because it is part of a AppleRAID”
Does anyone have a fix for this . Just spent a bunch of time doing everything in this video and I’m stuck on this prompt.
Please help
Reformat you hard drive to guided map partition
danpape shredits I just did my mac today and mine is saying the same thing. Did you get it figured out why it says you may not install to this volume because it is part of a AppleRAID”?
Danielle Coley i didn’t unfortunately I just didn’t bother with that raid version and kept it as 2 separate SSDs, it’s good enough for my needs
danpape shredits I ended up doing that too. Mine is doing great now.

loved the 666 death metal music. LOL
666 is the number to summon Satan.
zorkor death metal???? Uuhhhhhhh
Actually the screwdriver is from China, and 666 means everything goes well here.
@@floxshuilee1760 In reality, the number means evil and China from what reports I've seen (one of which was from John Oliver himself) is full of evil.
morbidcorpse lol
I still prefer my 2015, but one major benefit of this setup is the option for built-in raid on the go. Speaking of raid-on-the-go, would be nice to see SSD manufacturers find a way to put two equal0sized drives in a single connection.
I was thinking why he censored some part of the HDD just to realize it's a physical censorship.
Yup. I watched it just to see what model Crucial drive he was using.
You should’ve replaced the thermal paste
Lee thank you for this video. I went with a 1 tb SSD and 16 GB RAM. I didn't want to get rid of my DVD/CD drive. My 2012 MacBook Pro is ridiculously fast and excited that I only had to spend about $250 total.
Fitz, may I ask what brand of RAM you used? I just ordered 8GB of RAM but may return it and order 16GB. I have a mid-2012 MBP running High Sierra. I was thinking of buying a new MBP but may just upgrade the RAM and hhd to a 1B SSD.
@@DanaBenYehuda what did you end up doing
@@GS-kj6ur I put in 16GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. It has been a significant improvement in performance. I think the graphics card may be starting to go, but so far so good.
@@DanaBenYehuda I just brought my old one to life with an 870 Evo ssd now I'm waiting on my 16 gig cards to come in. I'm already running 8 but after that I think all I have left to do is the battery. The ssd made a world of difference but I'm hoping the ram upgrade can make it even better
@@DanaBenYehuda Also upgrade it to Catalina it looks way more professional if you haven't already
Halfway through the video I realised I don't even own a mac book pro.

Can we put 2 HDD of 1TB each? Will os Sierra accept it and show 2TB in total?
Yes
I followed your advice from the video this week, and I am so pleased with my "new" 2012 macbook pro! It is smoking fast for just a couple hundred bucks!
I like the Samsung ssd to go with the Mac... bring it in the Apple store and they’d get pretty mad
lol
lol Macbooks actually use a lot of Samsung parts
Apple store where i live has an samsung tv next to the apple tv
Apple buys parts for their phones from Samsung don’t they?
An Apple tech actually told me to install an SSD when I said my MBP was running super slow lol
Is this a 15” MacBook?
I used this video on my MBP 2012 and I have Catilina and Linux Mint 18.3 SSD with rEFInd bootloader. Good work on your up grade video.
Hello I have a option to get a new MacBook Pro mid 2012 with 4Gb ram, 500gb hdd brand new or the new MacBook Air 8gb , 128gb ssd but if I get the Pro I would put a ssd in it , do you think the pro is worth it?? Ps I'll be using for university ( not for photo or video editing)
Tejh Dhilraj pro
Tejh Dhilraj if it's just for uni then I'd go for MacBook Air as it's much lighter. I have the 2012 pro and it's so heavy
Pro!
ofcourse pro u can't be upgrade your macbook air but this pro can upgraded to 500ssd and 16gb ddr3 1600 ram so worth the money to buy pro
That is freaking awesome, I just bought my wife a M1. If I saw this earlier I would have saved a bunch.
Not a tech guy like that, but my mid 2012 15'in Macbook Pro is so slow when I use Lightroom and Photoshop for editing, will these upgrades help me or do I need to do more?
Paolo Jay Agbay even if you replaced the slow hdd with an ssd you will see major improvements.
Thanks for the feedback!!
I installed an ssd on my mid 2012 and my god, it is EXTREMELY FAST NOW!! Trust me it’s worth it.
have you reaped the results from the SSD? boot times for startup + boot times for apps?
@@MarcoGamer640Productions2012 Hi mate, I've the same model of MacBook as yourself - which SSD did you go for? Cant figure out whether to go for the 250GB or a 500GB one
why am i watching this i dont even have a macbook pro, i have a MacBook Air
Good good, intel. I've got a 2010 i5 Macbook pro maxed out at 8GB RAM, but will upgrade a 2012 (best year for them IMHO) to the standards shown in your video. 1TB SSD's are now under $140 (WD or Samsung NAND). Your delivery method is much appreciated....very well done, amigo !!
If everyone else adds the same parts to their laptops... Yours won't be the fastest ever anymore
Zackeroo HQ for that price what other laptop can you get that will also have 4 cores/16gb of ram and a 250gb ssd ?
