  • Are you currently studying for your GCSEs/A levels and are interested in applying to Medicine? Well, watch this video to find out what grades are required and what you should do if you want to apply to Medicine.
    I managed to achieve 9A*s and 2A*s and although you should aim to smash your GCSEs, not all Medical Schools will value your GCSEs the same way when assessing the strength of your application. Subscribe for weekly videos every Sunday.

    Hello Taha, i’m considering independently studying A level chemistry, Biology, and psychology so i can apply for medicine but i will be 19/20 at the time i apply. Will med schools accept me? Specially as i was a private learner and not a sixth-form attendant. I’d preferably apply to Newcastle.

    Do medical schools frown upon gcse resits?
    I didn't do well in my English gcse to the point I might be getting 3/4s. I'm thinking of resitting it as I don't want this grade to affect my chances of getting into unis like oxbridge, king's college, Edinburgh, etc. For my other subjects like maths and science I'm confident that I will get above 6s along with my options.
    Let's say I do well after retaking GCSE English like get 6/7s, would this lower the risk of rejection?
    The unis I'm looking into see gcse results as a 'predictor of performance' so I don't want them to think 'low' of me just cause of my English grade, just because I was going through health problems at the time.

    Hi Taha below are my gcse results:
    8 Physics
    7 Biology
    7 Chemistry
    7 Maths
    7 RS
    7 Geography
    6 History
    English Lit and lang 5
    4 French
    I'm certain all my grades will allow me to go to medical school except the english language grade. I have a chance to retake it in November but have some problems doing it. First problem is that im not sure if it is the right idea to retake whilst starting your a levels. Second problem is that im not sure whether unis accept retakes and lastly due to the pandemic in my school we were only taught one paper for english so im not confident at all on the other paper and i will have to sit both papers when retaking the exam. My A levels are Geography, Bio, chem and core maths.
    Can you please give me any advice on what to do.

      So Taha you need to find a set of medical schools that only require chemistry at a level and not biology. Once you find that set look at their other requirements like UCAT/BMAT GCSEs and then look at the courses and cities and narrow down which few you like the best 😊

    • @TahaButt
      @TahaButt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi so sorry I didn't see this comment, so honestly it depends on where you want to apply. I think if you want to go to Cambridge then definitely take maths as they want more science and academic subjects but I think for other medical universities like Newcastle it should be fine.
      P.E you learn about the anatomy and it is more related to medicine i would say. Check with the resources in the description and if you're still unsure definitely contact the medical schools office and enquire whether they value PE and maths the same or if it doesn't make a difference

    Also, I have done maths challenges , Additional Maths (FSMQ) , Work Experience at a Pharmacy , Play the Keyboard which I get graded by Trinity.

      @TahaButt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s best to contact the universities you mentioned and ask how much do GCSEs add to the strength of your application. I know St George’s used to rank their applicants according to their GCSEs score so it may be harder to get into there but I’m not sure about the other London Med schools. I think most Med schools want 3As at A levels, good interview, good PS and good GCSEs maybe (some unis don’t look at GCSEs). Your GCSEs look good though

      In my description there's a link to the medic portal which has a list of gcse requirements for all the medical schools.
      For Newcastle it states: "Newcastle University does not have any GCSE requirements for its Medicine A100 course, and instead has A Level or IB requirements."

  • @anon3196
    @anon3196 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think I'm expecting A*A*A* for A levels but my gcses were kinda bad. Do you think I'll be an issue? I'm thinking of retaking english and maths gcse (got Cs in both).

    • @TahaButt
      @TahaButt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are amazing predicted grades well done! So in the description there are 2 links that you should look at (under "2 important resources"). It will give you an idea of what universities expect their applicants to achieve at GCSEs. As I said some universities may look at your GCSEs whereas some universities like Newcastle tend to not as long as you take Bio and Chem at A level. After looking at the resources I would choose medical schools that don't really look at GCSEs.
      It might be worth calling their student office or contacting someone who deals with applications and ask them if their med school looks at GCSEs.
      Don't worry though I know medical students with not the best GCSES. You can do it!

    • @TahaButt
      @TahaButt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Honestly you will see how little GCSEs actually matter, it really depends on the medical schools you apply to.
      Some like St Georges look at your GCSEs and even rank you based on them.
      However some like Newcastle don’t even look at your GCSEs.
      So it’s important to look at uni entry requirements and if you’re concerned about your GCSEs then avoid applying to unis like St Georges that look at your GCSEs.
      Biggest things are A levels, UCAT/BMAT, personal statement (some unis don’t even look at PS) and interviews 👍🏽

      Hi John, in the description there’s some useful links. One of them is a pdf with the entry requirements for all the different medical schools in the uk and the other is the medic portal website which gives infortmation on entry requirements for GCSEs and A levels for med schools in UK.
      Not sure about London but I know that Newcastle currently don’t look at your GCSEs and focus more on your A levels. 👍🏽

    Bro another question sorry for annoying you , is a grade 5 counted as a B?

    • @TahaButt
      @TahaButt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So it looks like a high C. 4 is standard pass then 5 is strong pass. Check with your teachers though 👍

    • @TahaButt
      @TahaButt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep so depends on the university. If you mean GCSEs there's plenty of people at Newcastle med school who didn't get all A*s or As at GCSEs. some of my friends achieved a few Bs and they are on the course. I don't think Newcastle look at GCSEs, there may be other medical schools like that.

      In my description there's a link to the medic portal which has a list of gcse requirements for all the medical schools. If you're worried unis like Newcastle don't look at GCSEs as long as you do bio and chem at a levels 👍
