    A simple natural edge Walnut bowl. This was turned green and dried in the microwave; finished with 3 coats of danish oil.
    I filmed and edited this one slightly differently to my previous videos with no music and talking.
    Thanks for watching!

    As a potter for over 45 years I was always a fan of wooden bowls, 1970 shop class. Appreciate the beauty.

    Omg! I learned more in 3 minutes in watching your video for figuring out end grain log turning than some half hour videos with taking/ cutting pieces off etc ....
    Thank you!!!

    We just had two giant walnut trees blow down so I have a lot of walnut on hand. Great job on the piece 👌

      Cheers James, that's a lot of wood. Not a all jealous... 🤔. just watch the acidity in the wood, I've a feeling it can rust your lathe bed quickly if you turn it green.

    Beautiful bowl in every way....almost a translucent effect on the wall. That lathe looks strong enough to turn a Mack truck! Over the weekend, Kent of "Turnabowl" posted a great video on demoisturizing using a microwave....it looks like you used the same methods re: measuring changes in weight, size, and shape. Best wishes from Kauai and stay healthy.

      Thanks for the comments. I've started follow Kent ( as I have seen so much on his website). Already a great resource of videos. The lathe is a decent size!.thanks and take care. John

    I feel as though the two dark heartwood “eyes” are a distraction to the overall form. They make your eye focus on that area versus enjoy the entire form.
    Nice job of getting the piece to. a thicknesses that will reduce the chances for cracking at the pith.

    • @johnsherlock1920
      @johnsherlock1920  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Robert. I agree the heartwood helps distract from the unusual form. Thanks for your comments 👍🏻

    Fairly new to turning...may I ask what kind of spur(?) was in the tail stock? Thanks!

    • @johnsherlock1920
      @johnsherlock1920  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken. the brand is Axminister it came with my lathe, i think it's a cone/spur drive that you can remove the cone on to use as a ring center.

    By the curls coming off while turning and the fact that you microwaved the piece it was a green wood. You kept the pith so why did you not get cracking on both sides where the pith is. If I do end grain my projects always want to crack?

    • @johnsherlock1920
      @johnsherlock1920  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say; the microwaveing takes a lot of moisture out so it's more stable. So many factors with wood and where you are, though (species, humidity, wood structure etc). Thanks for the comment.

    Question if I may, as I started "nuking" rough bowls myself, are you getting any cracks or warpage? And how long are you microwaving them for? Thanks!

    It’s a beautiful piece either way but are you sure this is walnut?? I’ve worked with lots of walnut and lots of maple. And this looks much more like maple to me.

    • @johnsherlock1920
      @johnsherlock1920  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Luke, that 's what my tree surgeon friend told me who had to cut it down! Thanks for the comment.

      Walnut looks much different where I’m from. Not just the sapwood and heartwood but the bark is very rough. This looks like some other type of nut tree… to me it actually looks more like sweet gum

    What does microwaving the bowl do

    • @johnsherlock1920
      @johnsherlock1920  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It dries it quicker to reduce the water content rather than waiting a few weeks or months.

      It's an Axminster 1/2 (uk measurements) , but made by Crown. M2 steel nothing special 👍🏻

      I didnt give this anything for cracking. It can be ok if it's thin and dried in the microwave like this; depends in the moisture content , species of wood etc
