    i was privileged to see Chet in person along the banks of the Ohio River in the mid to late 90's. I so appreciate that his style is so distinctive and like Kottke once you are a fan you can pick out their works. You are a true master and just continue to amaze and entertain with your talents. Great lesson.

    Thank you for taking time to do such a detailed lesson. Chet Atkins had a way of making it seem so easy when he played because he looked so comfortable & casual. For us mortals, when we dig into learning his arrangements, we soon find hidden complexity that takes tenacity, patience, and lots of practice, and often some compromise with the difficult parts. This is also a nice tribute to Chet!

    "I can't talk and play." Finally, we find something Josh Turner can't do. And then, another one, the run at speed. Maybe there's hope for me yet. Great lesson, hope you can do more in the future.

    Could I suggest you do a video on thumb picks? It's one of those things where the people that use them don't even give them a second thought. But those of us that rarely use them are really kind of lost. I've tried them several times but couldn't figure out even basics of how they work, much less get used to using one. There's a surprising lack of instruction on the topic out there, and you really have a nack for this sort of educational content.

    • @famatu
      @famatu ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not to discount your opinion but I feel it is rather intuitive where instead of using your thumb, you just have to get used to picking the bass with a thumb pick. Just use it a lot and practice with it, no?

      Not a bad idea!! I'll think about that.

    • @charliemopps4926

      @@famatu I mean, I thought that as well, until I tried to use them. I went to my guitar teacher at the time (who had a master's degree in classical guitar performance or some such) and he just laughed "when you said you were buying them, I figured that would happen. Those things are weird, I've no idea." lol there appear to be different types, different sizes? Lengths? Is there a vocabulary? When are they helpful? Or essential? Or a really bad idea? Is it just a matter of having some marginal effect on your tone? What's the deal?!?! lol
      I'd also never really given a thought to normal guitar picks... But Rob Scallion put up a video a few years ago where he went over how they affected his playing, his tone, different materials, thicknesses and sizes... I had been playing the same picks I had been used to for decades and never really realized there were all these other options. That video really opened my eyes.

    Beautifully done...I wish this could be dedicated to Ralph Eggleston, visual genius and Academy Award recipient; he was the production designer for "Toy Story", "Finding Nemo", "WALL-E", "Inside Out", and "The Incredibles 2" (as well as supervising on others); he was a huge fan of this song (which he introduced me to), and- after being introduced to it by me many years ago- Josh, and this channel. He used to e-mail me Josh's videos all the time. "Martha My Dear" was a special favorite. He passed away last August after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer and I'll miss him forever.

It seems that one very excellent guitar player has chosen another very excellent guitar player to help him along in his skills. Please do not ever underestimate your skills or your influence on hundreds or thousands of players who wish in some way to emulate your abilities.

    Awesome video Josh! If I can point out just a little detail, the alternating bass notes are missing part of the alternating. I wouldn’t point it out except for how incredibly detailed you are.😅 Chet bounces back and forth between the low D and the open A every other time so D-d-A-d, then when he’s up at the 5th fret on the G, he picks up his finger to alternate with the low D, like G-d-D-d. Anyway thank you for the great breakdown, it would’ve taken me ages to figure out those solos.

Not all that important, I suppose, but for those interested Buster B. Jones did a masterful YT video on difference in Chet, Merle, Jerry Reed styles. Aside from that, you’re still a favorite and I marvel at your versatility.
