Lived in Philly for 4 years. Dalessandro’s...#1 no question about it. Jim's is the second best. Pat and Geno's are tourist traps and their steaks are average.
most places were all open. til covid, then some went to wall up the restaurant and you have to order at the window or put in a ticket and wait outside. pats and genos you can see through the windows, it's part of the show but they don't usually like to bring in media to stand in the middle of the line. it's pretty small from what I recall, at least around the flat top
When I visited Philly I made a local take us to Pat's and Genos. Then we went to his favorite spot a local place called Johnnie's and it was ten times better. Avoid the tourist trap.
Yeah, I’ve had Pat’s and Geno’s. If that was my only reference for cheesesteaks, I’d wonder why Philadelphians are so stuck on their mediocre greasy food.
@@anhw3303 Pat's and Genos were the worst cheesesteaks I had in Philadelphia or anywhere. Good thing I tried other random places because they were much better.
The first time I drove to Philly to get a cheesesteak, I did the tourist thing. Everyone here is right, Pat's and Geno's are both jokes. Came back and tried D'Alessandro's, Jim's, Sonny's, and Philip's (South Philly). I'm very surprised Philip's has been barely mentioned. Was VERY impressed. They slice their steak and don't chop it into ground beef. Keeps the flavor in. Tourists traps. Philadelphians would definitely not eat at Pat's or Geno's. John's is good. Delasandros is also good. There are a lot of Mom and Pop places in Philly that make superior cheese steaks.
I had Pat's for the first time and i really liked their Cheesesteak because of the wiz cheese. I wanted Geno's but I didn't know what i wanted. When i had Jim's steak, in my opinion, i think they're the best to make a real Cheesesteak.
But after only those two bites, they still run to the nearest restroom to purge! These two TH-cam chirpy self-infantilized "influencers" are to gourmets what the corporate TV invented "Partridge Family" is to real rock and roll! And I was born and raised in Philadelphia (although like the great 20th century wit, WC Fields, once said: Philadelphia is a great city to be FROM - permanently! Just as one Italian American's opinion (mine), the original Philly Cheesesteak ONLY had real Italian cheese called provolone, which dates back to Italy in the late 1800's. "Cheez Whiz" was invented in a laboratory back in 1953 USA by Kraft Foods, and can't even put the name "cheese" in its name because it's what is laughingly labeled a "cheese product" with only a smidgen of some sort of cheese mixed into the other 97% of artificial ingredients. Being an orange-dyed liquid should be the first clue! "Whiz" only started to be added by that miserable "Pat's Steaks" back in the late 1960's, well after it had reached its momentary peak a couple decades before then. It should be illegal ANYWHERE in the USA to pawn off that dyed diarrhea as human food! This entire episode reminds me of American tourists who return from Paris and rave about the one and only American McDonald's there just because it serves wine!
But I feel like of they didn't let them film, theres clearly a reason behind it and its most likely due to the way they make it, especially considering how it looked compared to the other
@Terry Wheelock first of all, what does that even mean? And second, I think them not being able to film affected their opinions of the sandwich. The reason they couldn’t film I think definitely had something to do with the way the they make it
That’s funny! I’m from & have lived in Kansas City my whole life &, we ALL know the TRUE best BBQ restaurants here yet, the media always goes straight for the “Media Darlings”, which aren’t truly the “Best”, so, whatever!🤣🥴

Pats is better then ginos cause they slice the beef more but they are both more good then places that arent in Philly. They have to use the right kind of bread.
@@greenlawnfarm5827 the one I go to is near Franklin Mills Mall or Philly mall, I they have 2 locations, when I visit my uncle I eat one per day I'm there literally lol
First-timers should definitely go to Jim’s. You can find better cheesesteaks depending on your individual tastes, but no one will tell you Jim’s doesn’t make a great sandwich. Plus, when you get there, you’re already on South Street, so you can also go check out everything else there and walk off the food!
Pats and Geno's are overrated and expensive. Doesn't even taste good, go to a corner store and you will get a better cheese steak. Tourist spots are all what Pats and Geno's is good for.
+1 for Dalesasandro's my Dad grew up down the street and we went there all the time when visiting my grandparents. All these years later, it's even better!
I never actually have the energy to make the food I watch on TH-cam but after this I was craving cheesesteaks so badly I went to my kitchen, pulled out my frozen sirloin steak and made myself two cheesesteaks. Started at 12:30 AM and its now 2 AM.
High end cheesesteaks are usually made with ribeye but you can get regular chip steak at the market. You don't want big pieces of steak in your cheesesteaks.
It's like going into NYC and getting pizza at Ray's. It's a tourist trap and any self respecting New Yorker won't go within two miles of a "Famous Ray's". Listen to the locals for the real city eateries!
Pats steaks has become a tourist trap that is living on its name. I’m glad they tried the other places first so they had an informed opinion before trying pats. I have to try Delasandras, but I do agree that John roast pork is better that Jim’s and Pats.
Sea Pea Yes, pats and Gino’s are both tourist traps in my opinion. Johns roast pork is better than Gino’s, pats, and Jim’s in my opinion. Johns closes right after dinner so go early. I do get Tony Luke’s when by the Walt Whitman bridge. They use good meat but you have to salt and pepper the steak yourself, they also put sharp provolone unless you ask for mild provolone. I don’t think sharp provolone tastes good on a cheesesteak. If you are in south west Philly Falones is really good. If you are south of the airport in essington Romano’s is good. Romano’s invented the Stromboli.
8:14 “I’m really excited about this one, because I love how this meat looks so finely chopped.” 11:32 “Dalessandro’s was delicious, but the meat was finely chopped and it’s not my preference”

Idk I like the ones I make myself at home. Fresh Italian rolls. Sauteed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms. Thinly sliced ribeye and canned cheese sauce as well as freshly shredded provolone, muenster and, pepper jack cheeses. And I don't chop the meat up to where it resembles ground beef. I love mine the most because obviously I make it exactly how I love it!

“Unfortunately the restaurant did not allow us to film the making of the cheesesteak” - That’s because they made em before you got there and it’s been sitting under a heat lamp for hours.
In all my years living in Philly I never had nacho cheese sauce on a cheesesteak (although that sounds great!) Never, ever confuse Cheez Whiz with the golden delight that is known far and wide as Rico's, the original nacho cheese sauce. Cheez Whiz, as admitted by their manufacturer, contains no actual cheese. Rico's cheese sauce however, does. If your local ball park uses anything besides Rico's I understand your confusion. Here are the ingredients for Cheez Whiz vs Rico's: Cheez Whiz ( Whey, Milk, Canola Oil, Maltodextrin, Milk Protein Concentrate, Sodium Phosphate, Contains Less Than 2% Of Modified Food Starch, Salt, Lactic Acid, Whey Protein Concentrate, Mustard Flour, Worcestershire Sauce (Vinegar, Molasses, Corn Syrup, Water, Salt, Caramel Color, Garlic Powder, Sugar, Spices (Contains Celery), Tamarind, Natural Flavor), Sodium Alginate, Sorbic Acid As A Preservative, Color Added, Cheese Culture, Enzymes, Natural Flavor), Rico's cheese sauce (Cheese whey, water, modified corn starch, vegetable oil (contains one or more of canola oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil), cheddar cheese (pasteurized milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes, annatto), salt, contains less than 1% of monosodium glutamate, jalapeno peppers, sodium phosphate, distilled vinegar, sodium hexametaphosphate, anhydrous milkfat, sodium stearoyl lactylate, lactic acid, tomato paste, natural flavors, citric acid, nonfat dry milk, yellow 6, yellow 5, caramel color, annatto color, turmeric (color). Contains: milk)
The real deal of these four. 4 - Pats. 3 - John's Roast Pork. 2 - Jim's Steaks. 1 - Dalessandros John's and Jim's are actually pretty close IMO - you could flip the order and I wouldn't argue. They are very different cheesesteaka, so it kind of depends on your mood. Dalessandros is great, but please . . . no mayo. Pat's is not even in the top 10 . . . Pat's and Geno's are more hype than substance. If you do this again, you should include Sonny's, Tony Luke's, Steve's Prince of Steaks, and Campos.

I was born in Philly and way back in the 60s weather it was Gino's or Pat's you never got a cheese steak with wiz on it ,it was always provolone, I don't know when that changed but they can keep the wiz.

xPositivityx yeah I laughed when I read your comment. Witorwitout is definitely not a good cheesesteak . It’s a fairly new location and by no means can it compete with any of the traditional spots. Some of my recommendations not in the video would be Larry’s , Paganos or Gooey Looies. Just depends on where in the city your visiting as these spots are in different parts of the city

most places were all open. til covid, then some went to wall up the restaurant and you have to order at the window or put in a ticket and wait outside. pats and genos you can see through the windows, it's part of the show but they don't usually like to bring in media to stand in the middle of the line. it's pretty small from what I recall, at least around the flat top
Just went to Dalessandros for the first time this past Labor Day. Do yourself a favor and go next visit to Philly
@@Grgaforniateezy i swear i got two steaks from there, how were both lacking flavor or seasoning? had better at wawa
@@joep2590 It's cause they don't salt ON the griddle. That might be why the flavor is smaller.
When I visited Philly I made a local take us to Pat's and Genos. Then we went to his favorite spot a local place called Johnnie's and it was ten times better. Avoid the tourist trap.
Genos is pretty good but Jim’s steaks is a lot better
I can say the same about cafe du monde, their beignets are nasty as hell
Yeah, I’ve had Pat’s and Geno’s. If that was my only reference for cheesesteaks, I’d wonder why Philadelphians are so stuck on their mediocre greasy food.
@@anhw3303 Pat's and Genos were the worst cheesesteaks I had in Philadelphia or anywhere. Good thing I tried other random places because they were much better.
That’s what my friend told me too, he recommended me tony Luke’s and it was amazing!
Philip's is my choice 👍
UPDATE (March 2023): Been to every popular place others mentioned that I hadn't been to since I originally posted such as John's, Tony Lukes, etc. Here's my top 3:
1. (By a landslide) John's Roast Pork

Pats steaks has become a tourist trap that is living on its name. I’m glad they tried the other places first so they had an informed opinion before trying pats. I have to try Delasandras, but I do agree that John roast pork is better that Jim’s and Pats.
@@shadowdog500 Is Geno's a tourist trap too?
