Definitely dislike niches (although I can acknowledge their usefulness). The population I’ve attracted is totally not what I would have sought out as my niche. I was not interested in working with neurodivergent folks and couples as well as some of the heavier diagnosis my clients present with. They chose to work with me based on our similar or complimentary personality which provided a richer connection increasing the likelihood of a productive outcome. If I advertised that I primarily work with EMDR and complex trauma for example (I do not), I might attract those who are of the somatic variety which is really not something I am attune to. I also tend to attract teens and have good success with maintaining a productive therapeutic relationship and was even pushed into working with them by demand even though it’s not my preferred demographic. The work calls us and if we paint ourselves in a corner we might weed out true enjoyment of our work for those who want it. The greatest influence in clients progress begins with the connection and does not begin with a niche, but the compatibility of therapist to client.
