I use this rain gear. I love them. Fell one time made a small puncture in the pants by the knee, but not bad enough to worry about. I'm on my second summer with them. They also work good to keep bugs off you at night around camp.
I am a Landscape Photographer. Last nighI was searching for rain gear that would be packable, lightweight, and allow me to photograph different places in different climates more so for protection against the elements and mosquitoes! I happen to run into this rain gear whilst I was searching for bug spray/repellent. At roughly $27.00, with all of its features, I pulled the trigger and bought the suit! FULLY AGREE with you, the pants DEFINITELY need at LEAST one pocket! I'm a Lefty, so a Left-Side pocket would be EXCELLENT. I appreciate the waste cinch, I'm 5 foot 8 and it would also be excellent if they had cinches for each pant cuff, or some type of system that would still allow water to flow over yet not wet your shoes and leave adjustability for length. I do appreciate the fact that my jacket has two pockets, but a waist cinch would also be nice. Where I'm at in the United States it's pretty humid on the East Coast and it rained today really well so I decided to take out the suit for tests spin, excellent! I wasn't sweating excessively. I did notice the breathability of both jacket and pants, and I am looking forward to adding more miles on the suit and seeing how it holds up through the various conditions I will put it through! You did EXCELLENT job on the initial review of the suit and its features, Thumbs Up, No Doubt!
In the never ending quest to lighten my gear I started my PCT hike earlier this year with a frogg togg rain jacket. On one very cold and rainy day (it was that kind of year) I found both my hiking shirt and the lining of my frogg togg jacket to be soaking wet after arriving at camp. Now I was cold and wet and any change of clothes would immediately become wet if I layered the frogg togg jacket on top. Luckily the rain subsided that evening and the sun came out the following morning so I was able to turn the frogg togg inside out to dry. This happened several more times before I was just done with this jacket. I had my REI drypoint gtx jacket (8.6 oz) shipped out to me at the next resupply. The fact that the frogg togg is not breathable, which I knew going in, is definitely something to consider. I do find the frogg togg jacket very useful with I'm not hiking.
Unless you are unlucky (or just cavalier with your gear) the jacket will totally last you an entire PCT thru and often more. If you get holes in it just patch them with Duct tape (better still: Tenacious tape) - it's a hiker-trash badge of honour on the US long trails! The pants, on the other hand (other leg?) will survive about a week...they are notorious for ripping while sitting down on even the most padded of chairs!
Wow these have come a long way. I have been using these for about 20 years and use to buy them for $9.99 USD. I remember I use to rant about these to other hikers for ultralight hiking and cost savings. Without a doubt these are the best waterproof/wind blocking jackets bar none. The old saying form fits functions holds 100% true. It is simple it does its job blocks 100% wind and 100% water when you need it to. This jacket has saved my ass countless time in the harshest condition even in sub zero snowstorm conditions. Now with that said it must be properly used. It is a simple 100% polyurethane material jacket, has ZERO thermal value as a stand alone and zero breathability, you will absolutely sweat in it, so use it as needed. There are endless cons to this jacket. But one of the very few items I never leave without on any of my hiking trips. A little FYI.. after wear and tear do not throw away, I cut and make useful things out of it like foot covers, gaiters, mitten shells and small assortments of pouches and baggies. Use seam tape to just tape them together and shock chords ..pretty simple DIY stuff you can make out of older frogg togg jackets :)
Great review! I've used the Frogg Toggs UL jacket for a couple years now- and it has worked very well. But I recently upgraded to the Frogg Toggs Xtreme Lite jacket. It's slightly heavier (1.5oz) than the UL, but has a better fit, exterior & interior pockets, adjustable wrist cuffs, adjustable waist, and a more adjustable hood. the material also seems quite a bit more durable as well. IMO, It was worth the $35 USD I paid and the slight weight penalty to gain the additional features/durability.
Frogg toggs also has great customer service. I'd ordered the blue green for my brother and they sent yellow. I called about making an exchange. I was met with southern hospitality. They sent it right out and asked me to just give the other to charity. They are also recyclable. Also I had the $200 patagucci m10 jacket that didn't work at all and then disentigrated after a year on a hanger. The frogg toggs are big. My brother is 6'1" normally a large but the medium is plenty roomy.
If you want to go even cheaper and lighter, FT makes an emergency rain jacket in two sizes that only runs $9. I'm more of a vertical hiker than a thru-hiker, so I don't really need as much durability. I also have a cheap plasticy rain jacket from Coleman that I got at Walmart. It's a little heavier and basically made from cheap poncho material. As was said in the vid, I wouldn't want to thru hike with the Frogg Toggs one, though. The durability with FT stuff - especially if snagged - is rumored to fall a bit short.
I found a The North Face jacket in a hostel bedroom when I was the only person checked in for a while and that's now my rain jacket of choice. Not the lightest thing however, so might be switching to this for when I am not expecting rain.
I have the frogg toggs which were in large bought for me. I love them but I have short legs so the large had longer legs that were below shoes so I walked on them. This caused the legs to tear and rip apart. For me I would prefer elastic legs so they would stay above your shoes to prevent tearing. There’s no leg size selection on them and 30” in seams aren’t common.
I thought if I rolled them up they would be good but found out to late I was walking on them. They weren’t strong enough to have me walking on them in rough areas. 😩😩😩
Observation, the energy expended in buying new cheap things like this outweighs the benefits. Plus, they wind up as trash in the landfill as more synthetic waste. My OR rain jacket is 7 years old, after each long trip I clean it and retreat it. It has been on two bicycle trips across the U.S., to Europe, the Eastern Sierras, and down river trips...
Such a useful, well presented video, the first I’ve watched from your channel. You’ve made me closely consider this as a cheap alternative to my Rab eVent Vidda jacket, which is lovely to use ..when it’s not raining (despite having reinforced shoulders, it just doesn’t stand up to carrying a pack day to day). I know this won’t last either, but at that price, if it lasts a few months wear, it’s done the job. I’m now more interested in the back to basics options, I like the thought of something with no membrane to delaminate - you can fold it however you like. Sure it’s lacking some comfort/styling features, but if it performs the primary function well, I’ll be happy. A concern of mine would be how it stands up to abrasion on the shoulders/back. If it suddenly rips a couple weeks in, then it’d be a very unwanted dilemma/potentially a trip ender, if using in Scandanavia where jackers are far from being an impulse buy.
If warmer, less windy trip conditions warrant it, consider the Frogg Toggs Poncho as rain gear and pack cover. No shoulder wear then as it keeps pack and straps dry.
Thanks for sharing. The jacket is light but does not seem very resistant to me. Do you recommend wearing it, carrying a 15 kg backpack with wide shoulder straps? Don't you risk ruining it and making it lose its waterproof properties? Thank you in advance. Ivan
What an incredible bargain, thank you for this review. I am currently looking for decent waterproofs that don't cost the Earth.....I think I have found them!
@@thetrailhunter4469 These are Tyvek material, ppl use them in work protection for anything from chemical, dust to radioactive and/or biological hazard protection. It would be awkward to wander around in the woods in white protective suits, but this is basically the same. A bit more expensive, and a lot less awkward.
Theatre Gown! Same materials for Surgical Gowns, can’t see the item lasting long... could be wrong, but I think it will breakdown over time likely the glue will be the weakest point.
I’ve got the Rab Alpine Downpour Jacket. Not actually had much use out of it yet. I am intrigued by the frogtoggs though. At that price there’s no reason to not try one out 👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers man, yeah that’s a pretty sweet jacket. But I don’t think I’ll be spending much money on rain gear from now on haha. Mad world. But my torrentshell will last for years to be fair. Thanks dude.
Looking into doing parts of the SDW in Spring and have just started researching gear. Never walked that far before, only days out, so really appreciate your efforts and advice. This looks like it’s going to cost a fair bit to get some good gear to take.
Thanks Darryl. Ahh the SDW is such a good hike. And not necessarily that expensive. Just depends on how light you want to go and what types of hiking you’re looking at doing. Build the gear up slowly, test out cheap stuff and figure out what you like and over time you’ll dial your gear in. Happy trails!
Good idea, they'll definitely protect clothing from nearby coughing and sneezing. There's a huge shortage of gowns and scrubs here in the UK. Maybe Frogg Toggs could make some?
REMINDER: 99.9% of people do NOT need Gore-Tex and it doesn’t biodegrade, ever. Look into Frog Tighe, H2NO, DWR over nylon.. cause most of those are more than enough rain gear. Gore Tex is only for scenarios where your life is on the line, unintentionally. Think special forces, Everest Sherpas, etc.. not someone doing weekend hikes with a GoPro or for style.
The main difference to PATAGONIA is on sustainability. PATAGONIA will try to use recycled materials where possible and repair. The frog stuff appears to be a throw away laminate material. If indeed it makes a difference I cannot promise, but to buy every few months a new rain suit should not be the goal. Happy hiking.
Appreciate that. When I’m finished with my Frogg Toggs I will of course be making sure I either dispose of them properly or donate them to charity for someone in need. Also the shear amount of rubbish I’ve collected from trails and oceans all over the world that people who quite frankly don’t give a sh*t about the natural world leave behind is probably enough to make over 50 of these rain-suits. All the best to you. 👍
I nearly had my set for 12 years. Just recently the rain in my area killed my frogg toggs and I recently bought the very Patagonia Torrentshell you have and hope it last longer than my Frogg Toggs. Also note, what out for briers because they will ruin your frogg toggs and rip them. I have taken great care with mine and they lasted really long.
Interesting how they can make a waterproof suit for £18, yet everything I've bought from Rab lately leaks like a sieve. The Rab Spark was the worst, it leaked through the taped seams and even through the face fabric. The only time it was vaguely waterproof was in it's first week when the DWR was fresh.
okay i brought the frogg troggs to the boundary waters and after 1 hour of medium rain i was %65 dry underneath. After 5 minutes i was sweating and felt extremely clammy. This thing might be good for walking the dog in a light rain. If you need to stay dry... DONT trust this thing. The only time I would recommend this is if you cannot afford anything else.
haha the torrent jacket has to have the worse zip EVER.. drives me nuts! my FT jacket is covered in duct tape.. gives it that 'Paul Smith' look.. very chichi haha. not sure i;d call it breathable.. but as breathable as most sub 300£ gear if the reviews are to be believed. the welding is just that.. heat source applied to weld together (locus gear use it for their stuff.. very clean)
I've always wondered...what is the difference between a rainshell like this and actual hardshell jackets by Patagonia and Arc'teryx, that cost hundreds of dollars and - at the end of the day - serve the same purpose?
wow that's even cheaper than my trusty peter storm cag but looks cooler, have a fancy pants mister mountain goretex that i never use hiking cos its a big heap of complete nonsense, might try frogg togg:-)
Have you contacted Patagonia about replacing the zipper on your jacket? I'd be interested to hear if you have. I am sure they would replace it for you. Or even give you credit toward a new one. Frogg Toggs is throw away trash and won't outlive a Patagonia rain shell. You'd probably go through many more Frogg Toggs in the lifetime of the jacket compared to the Torrentshell. Yes, I agree the value for money is amazing. But much more goes into it than that including care for the Planet, the company (Patagonia) owning the product you buy and the quality of the gear.
Yeah. I just want something cheap and light for the PCT which will keep me dry and I’ve had this pair of Toggs for ages and only just now need a replacement.
Glad to here the medium works well for you. Maybe I missed it but what’s your height and weight etc ....I’m 6.0’ 165lbs 40” chest 35/36” arm length trying figure out my size.

Bottoms of the trousers are a bit torn and some very small holes in the jacket. But I’ve used this thing a lot! Still good. I should do a 6 months review.
I went on TH-cam just for sole purpose of talking about Frogg togg rain gear riding motorcycle you probably seen it before but the good ones do not work better off with nothing I don't care if they are cheap or pull-ups all they do not work just trying to help
Here's a rather amusing review of Frogg Toggs. th-cam.com/video/VvqsdclvQ1c/w-d-xo.html In all fairness tho come back here if you're going to purchase on Amazon. I have the women's black that's really gray. What I like is that it has a certain heft without the weight if that makes sense that feels warmer than some of the expensive jackets that seem closer to a wind jacket.
Ha ha brilliant....just googling frog togs as needing some new trousers and your face pops up... classic trail hunter magic!!! Oi are you able to put the trousers on while wearing your boots or shoes nice and easy???
Haha amazing! Going up the rankings man! You can slip em on, easier with dry shoes/boots but gotta do it gingerly. Thanks for watching dude. Did you get anything in the post?

Sure, I’m 5’7 weigh 154lbs not sure on the other measurements. It’s quite loosely fitted anyway so either a medium or large will fit for sure.
You’re awesome! Thanks!!
Any time Curlee
It's definitely big and you won't look stylish but if it works it works.
Wear the pants for a day or even a few hours walking around, then come back and tell about the back seam on the pants.
Great video 😊🌲
You said you sent for a medium. What size is your torrentshell mate ?
That’s a medium as well I believe mate. 👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 Cheers pal. Only recently discovered your channel. Keep up the good work though I think you're going to cost me a few quid!
@@richardwilson5083 Haha, ahh well this is all I spend my money on, I don't save for anything else so I can buy the best I can afford. Glad you're enjoying the content.
Welded, in this case means heat bonded.. melted together.
And if you’re smart... a baseball cap under the hood makes it like a roof over your eyes.. yay.
I bought a set of this rain gear once. I got four holes in the pants and jacket the first time I used them.🙄
Yeah I’ve heard of people ripping the bottoms when they sit down. That’s the trade off for the price I guess. Thanks for watching.
I can both stand and sit.
Has anyone experienced the pants splitting in the back?
Cool except for the fact that these things seem to rip so darn easily!
How's this holding out mate?
Bottoms of the trousers are a bit torn and some very small holes in the jacket. But I’ve used this thing a lot! Still good. I should do a 6 months review.
@@thetrailhunter4469 sounds good, hoping to do the Cape Wrath Trail next year so looking at ways to save some weight. 6 month review would be great. 😁
I like them man
I will fill them
i'm 5'8" and weight 165lbs...Medium a good size?
We have the same low-priced waterproof raincoats in our store, welcome to visit. fwg.us
Are you suuuure it's breathable?
Hiked the Snowdon horseshoe in it, didn’t sweat half as much as in my torrentshell. So yeah, I’d say so.
@@thetrailhunter4469 Cool. Nice to have someone review it in UK climes, as with a lot of your stuff. Always appreciated!
I went on TH-cam just for sole purpose of talking about Frogg togg rain gear riding motorcycle you probably seen it before but the good ones do not work better off with nothing I don't care if they are cheap or pull-ups all they do not work just trying to help
In the form of a sentence please. A coherent sentence. Thank you.
I bought this on your review but it failed big time in heavy rain:
Ahh that’s a shame. Mine worked fine for ages. Maybe yours had a manufacturing defect. Friends of mine also had no issues in rain.
@@thetrailhunter4469 nice one cheers for the heads up!!!! I can do gingerly as I hate having to take my boots/shoes off before putting over-trousers on when out on the wilds......I am on my way back from working away for last few dayz and will be raiding the post box as soon as I get in bro!!!thanks for the knowledge and speak soon, Cheers Russ 👣🙌👍
How much that jacket?
what is your height / weight using the medium
I’m 5’7 and ain’t very large around the waist.
I cut the pants off into shorts.
Haha nice one.
this guy is hilarious!!!
These are great just watch pout with disability like surfing etc... they can puncture/rip andre they WILL burn a hike I'd around a amber from fire. Otherwise... amazing peice of gear... just be careful!
Thanks Blaclist! Good tip! Happy trails!
That jacket I think that its just the Ultra Lite model not the Ultra Lite2....look here
th-cam.com/video/jDu03KI6Blc/w-d-xo.html
Different shape and texture...
The Servant
I just. Received mine. The sleeves r too short. The material so rough! Terrible quality I paid way too much39$. I’m returning it. Terrible
Sounds like you bought the wrong ones. The ones in the video, and what most backpackers use, are Frogg Toggs Ultra Lite. They should only cost around 15 bucks.
Hmm, yeah they don’t sound like Frogg Toggs. Thanks for watching though 👍
Amazon?
There should be a link in the description
@@thetrailhunter4469 I'm in Canada matey. 👍😎🇨🇦
Would you buy this in camo?
Does it cause cancer ?
Lol. Frogg toggs blow. They're good for about a month of consecutive use and then it wets thru. I know. I went through 4 on my AT thru.
Ahh haha fair play. The AT is pretty wet.
My wife and I both blew out the crotch of the pants after 2 used. Not worth it
It's the same material that surgical gowns are made from. Just stay out of the spiky bushes.
not good.....fragile...easy to tear....breathable, aka you get wet....they seem to be a wind breaker.....ergo....my thoughts are no...on this brand...
It’s £18 for a full rain suite which weighs next to nothing. Had mine for ages. Just take care of them 👍
How much that jacket?
pants and jacket run you about $18-20 at most Walmart supercenters
