    Back from Scotland! We spent some time in Edinburgh before taking a camper van into the highlands. I can see why the locale was the inspiration behind many fantasy worlds, it really was magical. I'm working on a small short film that captures the essence of our time there, keep an eye out for it over the next number of weeks!

    Every single person is already worthy of respect without a job. It took a lot of propaganda to get us to the point where our entire lives are tied into working for a company to survive, but this mindset is dead wrong and leads to mental and physical illness.
    Food grows out of the ground and water falls from the sky, we can build a system that over complicates the simple act of living, but we can't simplify life's free and basic resources to provide enough fresh food and clean drinking water for everyone?? Maybe.... working our current meaningless jobs is the exact action that takes away our ability and energy to build a smart system that works WITH nature to provide these resources with minimal work, pollution and wasted energy.
    For example: We have Walmarts every 5 miles but we have 0 Walmart sized greenhouses to grow fresh local food with....

    • @steveantonioni
      @steveantonioni  ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yes. I think we prioritize our limbic system ("lizard brain" ie. primal/base desires) over our more evolved, long term oriented mind. As a result, this priority reflects our choices as consumers which in terms reflects the "problems" businesses find profitable to resolve. I believe we will transcend this over time.

    • @troypropes1182

      @@steveantonioni agreed. We may be in the transitionary period of that time right now, considering the necessity for our survival to cease and reverse the effects of polluting our own Planet.
      We are cells of this planet as much as our body is made of cells. Trees act like bronchioles in the lungs, rivers act as veins. If I had a virus destroying my lungs, poisoning my veins, genociding and exterminating my other cells and plugging my arteries, My body would become more volatile until the virus was gone or I was dead.

    If I learned anything in getting my degree in philosophy, it is that 1. there are no answers, only questions, and 2. the meaning of life is exactly what you make it.

    • @steveantonioni
      @steveantonioni  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I disagree, respectfully. Not being a dick. I appreciate you sharing your opinion.
      1. imo everything has an answer (a cause you can trace back to source)(a law you can observe ie. math/physics)etc. Some questions just have much longer cause/effect chains than others and are therefore more easier to *shrug* and say "who knows".
      2. imo that's a human-centric view. You can identify an objective purpose for anything (trees inhale c02 exhale 02). Evolution as a process has a clear objective purpose. If all the parts of a whole has an objective purpose, so does the whole.
      But hey, "who knows" :P

    • @JacobH-xo1nk
      @JacobH-xo1nk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steveantonioni Purpose and function are two separate things. Evolution has a function, not a purpose. Our natural world functions in a particular way, though deviations can be viewed pretty commonly and functions do change, this can be random and not purposeful. Not everything has an objective answer, i.e. not even physics (quantum).

    • @pocket83squared
      @pocket83squared 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@steveantonioni Meaning and purpose are two different ideas, and evolution makes use of neither. Evolution is incidental. _We_ imbue the inanimate with their apparent patterns, and we do this _post hoc._ The real "human-centric view" is the one that prefers to see something as having any clear, objective purpose.
      Further, purpose doesn't scale. Parts may have their purpose, and that purpose may contribute to another, emergent property, but the new property will have a separate "whole" purpose. White bloods cells attack foreign bodies with zero concern for your sniffle, as you blow your nose to evacuate their spent husks with zero concern for their sacrifice.
      _Who knows_ is a thought-terminating cliche we use to be nice. But at its root, it's totally in agreement with Relativism, which is precisely what OP was making use of in point 2.

    A great and thought provoking video - thanks. I particularly like your comments about the game, and about builders and players. I think people who want to be a builder often need to work as a player for some years, in order to build a stake (as you did), both in financial and competence / marketability terms. A critical element of that strategy, in my view, is to learn how to live well on a small income. Fuelled by a desire to be a ‘free builder’, learning that is not really hard. Whether you are a player or a builder, success requires a lot of determination, learning and effort. There’s no free ride.

One way is saving an ungodly amount of money for a few years to invest it in the stock market (S&P 500 and others) and then be able to retire somewhat early, like in your 40s or 50s. OR you can try the entrepreneurial way by making your own business. Or you can focus on transitioning to remote work that alleviates stress levels significantly and allows you to have more than one job at a time so that you can save a lot more money and invest. Hope this helps, it certainly helped me :)

    A job is a social construct that ties your self-worth to an external entity that takes your energy, time and effort in exchange for currency that inevitably loses its value from inflation over time. And that currency you exchange your life force for, you are taxed even further on before it's even given to you. That's where a job and purpose differ. Having purpose goes deeper. That's why every human being searches for it. If you give that energy, time and effort to a purpose, the return is far greater. We all need money to survive though, so be strategic about this. The rat race is not an easy escape but it can be done with love, awareness, patience and creativity.

      Oh I think it’s incredibly common. Especially for people who are generalists instead of specialists.

    A job is about more than work. Even a garbage man can enjoy being around the people they work with. The biggest problem with people not wanting to work is the self-worth they believe a job bestows upon them and the notion that a job is always supposed to be enjoyable. It's simply not true. Respect should be the reward for any job. The simple fact that you're trying to support yourself and not leech off others is something to be proud of and if a job is always supposed to be enjoyable then we wouldn't need recreational activities.

      I haven't met any young kids who think a job is " always" supposed to be enjoyable but I have met many who do not wish to manual labor anymore. Yes jobs provide people with social contact, a sense of purpose and often define key aspects of us. That's all true. However not all jobs are equally valued in society. That garbage man is looked down upon by most those he serves. Parents don't raise there kids in hopes they can be a garbage collector. They raise them to be Drs. Lawyers. Just go learn to code was the rallying cry for years. Learn AI and software development is probably the current push. Teachers push stem fields and college so " you don't end up having to labor someday." Problem is not everyone can be a tech genius and not everyone is going to fit in college. Jobs long since gave up trying to provide a living wage or ensure employees were treated with decency. People want to work. What they do t want is an abusive boss and to have their ideas constantly bashed. At least working for yourself there is the hope of making it and if your boss treats you badly well that's on you. I'm custodial at a school. I've known a good many people who actually loved the job. They were all older generation like myself. Raised believing a job would provide security and wealth. Had lived through times where benefits were not a thing at most jobs and had seen the unions win ground. But the kids? No they don't want a contract, they all Uber as their main gig and hope to start something on their own. Can't understand why I can't leave, I did my work why do I have to stay? What do you mean I won't get paid for the time if I go home? I did the work! Lol. Yeah dude hourly jobs don't work that way. Lunch is 30 minutes and you got to come in when they say so. Yeah you can clean the rooms just as well later but that's not how hourly work goes. 🤣🤣. Us older folks were raised a bit differently.

      Agree with a lot of that but I have met people who won't work, or hold a job because they expect everything to be fun. That's always been a thing with kids but now I'm seeing with adults.
      I'm 60 and it's true that society and parents push the notion that certain jobs have higher value/status but it's worse than that now. It's not just a job that people think makes them 'better' than others but their level of education. A lot of unemployed people think they're better than people doing manual labor simply because they have a degree. And I've seen respected people claim merit and education are one and the same.
      We're older and we both know a kid fresh out of college doesn't have more merit that a guy with a high school diploma who's done a job for years but it's a pervasive belief. I see it as a sort of good old boy network among college graduates that elevates their own worth by claiming more and more jobs require a degree.
      As for the way society views certain jobs I don't know what we do about that. It's a problem with arrogance. Yeah sure a doctor is more important than a garbage man but is a guy doing face lifts really more important that a guy getting rid of garbage and the disease it can cause? Is the truck driver who delivers food to millions less important than the guy creating ads to increase sales of soda pops?
      A lot of this is self-generated. We seek ways to elevate our importance and when you invest years in schooling you want it to represent status and value. But the truth is it's what you do with it that determines it's real value. A PHD working at McDonald's is of no greater value than a high school dropout. It's the harsh truth that those responsible for creating an economy where a PHD can't find a suitable job also promote the notion that your self-worth is tied to what you know rather than what you do. And they do it to deflect accountability.
      This is why we see the 'living wage' argument about jobs that were always considered more suited for teenagers living with their parents paid what is best described as training wages. Not jobs meant to support anyone. The 'living wage' argument deflects from the fact that they've failed so miserably that such jobs are now viewed as careers.
      I've rambled on enough and probably got a lot of stuff wrong. It's just my observations over 45 years of working everything from manual labor to desk jobs from working offshore to travelling nationwide from pushing brooms to managing dozens of people. Every single one of those jobs had it's good and bad points and contrary to what a lot of young people think the so-called easy jobs weren't the most enjoyable.
      If you're a good person you're going to endure more stress and lose a lot more sleep over worrying about the people you're responsible for than a job where your only responsibility is to yourself. Life is much more enjoyable when you leave your job and it's worries behind you everyday when you walk out the door. Jobs that follow you home, on vacation, on a date and to the club make it very hard to actually enjoy life but they're the ones that pay the most and offer the best chance for advancement. More people need to recognize that when they're being jealous, envious or hateful of those who appear to be doing less work than them.

    Hey Stephen,
    It's Damian here, we spoke a few weeks ago over Zoom (I'm from Australia).
    Just wanted to say I appreciate this video. I very much relate to wanting to be a "builder".
    Your conversation also guided me to also start a TH-cam channel (this account).
    The niche is still being worked out, but the focus is teaching younger people (21-25) things I've learnt about business, life and the corporate world (yeah I know...I still value in experiencing that environment, perhaps not for too long).
    It would be cool to meet you in person one day (if I ever get to Canada, or wherever you are based!).
    Regards,
    Damian

      Congrats man! The first step is the most important one :)
      Use this time to experiment a lot on the actual content (what's inside the box) and then once you feel like that is in a good spot, focus on the packaging (what's outside the box ie. thumbnails, titles) to start capturing attention.
