Thanks for the review. I decided to buy this as my first mech. Hot swap and blue tooth should be more common. It feels like the perfect demographic for entry into mechanical keyboards, its multiple features not even available in expensive keyboards actually encourage you to to purchase it over simply sticking with the good and reliable ol cheapo mechanical/membrane keyboards everyone gets.
Dude, I agree with EVERYTHING you got to say. I got this keyboard because I want to (mainly type on it and feel sick) but also for work and it’s SUPER VERSATILE!!!
I agree 100% I have the k8 aluminum hot swap and love it. I swapped out to some NK cream switches and some cheap pbt doubleshot keycaps and the amount of thock is NUTworthy
So that's a longggg story. If you want the original holy pandas, they're very hard to find and you may have to make them yourself. However, switches that are very close to the original have come out. One is by Drop.com and the other is by Glorious Gaming (glorious panda). The Drop.com switches come lubricated, but they're lubed unevenly, causing each to make a different sound. They're still fine for me, who doesn't care THAT much. Mine took about 2 weeks to ship. The glorious panda comes unlubed and is better for DIYers and they're cheap. Mine took about 3 weeks to ship though.
just ordered this keyboard, the Aluminum, hot-swap RGB version, same to you i dont want to train my fingers on a different/compact layout since im a programmer/gamer, this is the best choice for my budget
Yeah man...I picked up a Glorious GMMK pro that I plan to review soon from a TKL perspective/wired perspective. Hopefully you'll see that here soon! Hope you enjoy it..I still LOVE mine!
Great review. First video of yours I've watched. I bought this keyboard and I love it. I'm not a gamer but I write a ton and I am very picky about my keyboard. I have several mechanical keyboards that cost considerably more than what this K8 cost and they're in the closet. I'm also not a mech hobbyist. I did get the hot swappable with Gateron blues and they were great, but I ended up switching them out with Drop Halo clears and its a heavenly typing experience. I've never swapped out switches before but it still only took me about 20 minutes to swap them out. Great keyboard.
Haha thanks man! It still takes a ton of time...and afterwards, everything looks chaotic so i have to reset the set every time. One day, hope to have a dedicated space to just b-roll my heart out!
After watching this video i decided to get a K8 for myself. It's been 2-3 weeks since I received it, and I absolutely love this keyboard! It was exactly what I was looking for: a mechanical, wireless and not a 60% (i just CAN'T get used to 60% keyboards, i'm a f-keys guy). The only other option that i've found was g915 from Logitech, but the price of that one was astronomic. Right now i'm looking for HyperX pudding keycaps to put on it, but I'm from Brazil and I just can't find the ANSI layout around here :( Thank you for this video! It helped me to make my mind about this upgrade. Just subscribed!
4:47 totally agreed with you , i have a 65% custom one then i have to retrained my muscle memories , thats why some keyboard is nice to have if they have some spacing for easier navigate which key you want to press, but some others said it didnt look clean lol
I just got my K8 yesterday, and I'm loving it so far. :) I see what you mean about the keycaps, though. My spacebar is smudged a little already. One other thing I thought was weird is that I didn't get a second Windows key in the box. My right key that should be Windows is still "option". Not a big deal, because I remapped that key to do another function anyway, but it was a little annoying. I got my keyboard off of Amazon. I got the blue switches, white LED lighting. I have to say, I'm a bit surprised at how sturdy it feels. For under $60, it's a hell of a deal. I don't intend to ever switch out the switches, but it's good to know that if a switch malfunctions, it *can* be replaced. I might do a little research and see if I can spruce up the keyboard with better keycaps, though. :)
I know these keyboards aren't flawless, but man...for the price, it just...WORKS! And gives you so much room to customize. That's a huge win win for me!
@@Ahnestly The overall package can't be beat. Very underrated overall! I also bought my brother the K8 RGB (though not hot-swappable) for this birthday. I hope he'll love it as well.
You can test latency by soldering a LED to the PCB for one of the buttons. You then need to record your screen with the LED is visible on a high-ish frame camera (ideally recording in double your monitors frame rate so 240 fps if your monitor is 120Hz; 120fps if your monitor is 60Hz, this is to make sure you actually record every frame your monitor outputs). Press the key and count the frames between the LED lighting up and action happens on screen (I typically use fighting games or rhythm games but I guess Overwatch will work, just make sure the game isn't introducing any latency). This method is typically used to measure input lag on monitors. But you can do this for both wired and Bluetooth mode on the keyboard and get a difference in frames. That should be how much faster or slower one mode is over the other. You can then convert your result to milliseconds. This is how you test it (not my video/channel): th-cam.com/video/TiwYSbiJAWo/w-d-xo.html
I just got the cheapest K2 model as my first mechanical keyboad. Whevnever I change out my desk that allows for a larger keyboard I'll consider the K8. Thanks!
Love the review! I was just a bit taken aback at 9:30 due to automatic subtitles and translation to my native language; instead of wireless buds, YT understood wireless butts and with some auto syntax, the sentence was changed into "My wireless a** is really weak"...
Oh he's talking about prebuild keyboards. But on another note, you could buy a $500 custom keyboard case alone, or buy $200 custom keyboard and you can modify the latter to make it feel and sound as good as the $500. The reason people buy something that expensive is the exclusivity, brand name. These boards are definitely great quality boards. But when it comes to typing experience at the end of the day, there's marginal difference after you mod the cheaper keyboard. Especially when switches are what matters most, imo. The simplest comparison is the difference between owning a $1000 watch compared to $500 watch. They both do their job.
Hi! It's this one here - geni.us/oRGCf I'm actually using the older model (CX), but looks like it's more expensive for some reason! I love it so much I bought a second one for my studio (using it to type this)
That makes sense but I would never recommend anyone use an external keyboard with their laptop if their laptop isn't elevated somehow or unless the keyboard is a very slim one. I found myself too far from the screen and bc of the higher profile of the k8, found myself higher up in my chair, causing me to look downwards ar my laptop!
I got one for my laptop too and it’s not bad if it’s elevated, but if it isn’t, I found my neck sore reallly fast and always straining my eyes. I’m getting old...
You spelled ahnestly wrong. I am in sales, kinda haha. I work behind the scenes, not so much up front. Thought about being a car salesman. In any case, really appreciate the kind words!!
You can but that depends on how picky you are about sound. I lubed my switches and that solved that really weird muted sound I was getting on the keys with stabs
being real man why the fuck is all the big names sleeping on this thing. I personally had the apex pro tkl, huntsman te, g915 tkl, and tried a bunch of 60s 65s and things like the gmk or durgod hades 68 which told me i loved the gat yellows plus years of random gaming boards but real talk i got the aluminum rgb hot swap on a whim because i really wanted a tkl form factor that had a standard bottom row and hot swap this narrowed down to gmmk white ice, drop ctrl and the k8. So i got the k8 thinking it would be chinese junk because i never heard of it, put my favorite switches in it, keycaps, filled the frame and holy shit it kills all the other ones hands down its actually fucking insane. I typed it in youtube just to see whos up on this shit and my man you came up first. Legit! This is basically custom on a budget plus wireless ability is insane for this price point.
A while back I asked Keychron support and a keyboard TH-camr whether the top plate was aluminum with the aluminum frame option. They both told me the top plate is aluminum. You're saying the body is still all plastic and only the frames are aluminum? Great video btw, love the shots, looking forward to more videos from you.
@@Ahnestly The other day and dont know if it happens to you my keyboard was in mac mode and I didnt realize, I even downloaded a program to remap keys until I looked the side and was like, OH.
Thanks for this video. I think I am going to get this keyboard :) I like how the arrows are slightly separated from the other keys like standard keyboard; I can have another bluetooth number pad on the desk for when I need to do a lot of calculations. Regarding SHIFT-? (question mark key). Try pressing shift with your left hand pinky followed by the question mark with your right hand pinky. That's how I do the ? mark anyways. I actually think it's the proper way to do it. You don't even have to leave home position. (I touch type around 120 wpm)
I type like....stupidly bad. I took typing classes for years in school and decided to go rogue. Now I type however I want and sit around 140WPM lol. My typing makes no sense (i use about 6 fingers total for 90% of my typing)
My only concern is the front height - some people said it might be uncomfortable and may cause wrist strain without a wrist rest. What's your experience?
Ahnestly speaking....I was worried too, but it’s been totally fine. I hate wrist rests and thought I might need one, but it really didn’t feel all that different for me. I’m coming from a topre keyboard if that helps give reference!
You pretty much sold me on this keyboard, I'll for sure use the affiliate link. If you could do one more test that would be awesome: Test the android latency using the same traffic-light test on android using wired vs BT (but not spam key test, regular reaction time if possible). AFAIK, BT keyboards usually have around +80ms delay over wired on desktop OSs,. Based on your 0.0126 s spam key test, the k8 has already overcome the 80ms, but the spam key test isnt so useful in my opinion. BTW the usecase for android is DeX!
If you buy this through Amazon, do you know if you still get the benefits of buying it from the official site? Like all the stuff in the box and the warranty?
Got a hot swappable K2 a week ago and I love it. Had the K1 v4 before this but ended up selling this because the low profile switches are not suited for gaming (imo). Biggest con for me is indeed the placement of the usb outlet. The other cons can be fixed (to some extent).
I personally have the k8 and would like to say that if you don’t need to travel with it & like how much spaced out the keys are then totally get the k8. I was personally going for the k2 but instead got the k8 and haven’t looked back at the k2 ever since.
@@Ahnestly Lol my laptop has all of those but the page up and down is combo with up down button. However I hardly use page up and down. And I'm quite sure the k2 has those buttons?
I don’t get that this has a switch for choosing Mac or Windows mode, making it easy to instantly switch, but no dual-labeled keycaps. It seems that they might as well make the switch a jumper that’s behind an access panel or something, because it seems to not have been designed for switching back and forth all the time.
Great video! Really helpful, I was looking for an affordable option with a decent layout and I think this is it. Just a few questions- Do you need a wrist rest with this computer if you're typing for long periods of time? Also, what switches do you recommend for a first time user?
Thanks for the kind words! I have a wrist rest and I hated it so much paired with this keyboard that I just tossed it into storage. I'd recommend maybe just putting something soft under your wrist to see if you like it. As for switches, it's really all preference. Tactile switches (brown and blue) have a "threshhold" or resistance you have to break for it to type something. Think of any calculator you've ever used - the keys don't just slide down. When you give a key enough pressure, it breaks the threshhold and types something. Linear (red) on the other hand has no resistance and is smooth all the way down. Red will be much quieter because it doesn't need to make a "thunk" (brown switch) or "clack" (blue switch) sound when it actuates. Then there's also the weight noted with each switch, which indicates how much pressure is needed for a switch to trigger and type something. Hope this helps. Listen to sound tests online. I personally like tactile and heavy switches because I type REALLY weird and have heavy fingers, so the tactile is nice so I know I typed something and the extra weight helps with control in typing, preventing me from making mistakes I would make on a linear switch. This can fatigue fingers much faster though.
If I were to purchase either the Keychron optical browns or Gateron mechanical browns, which would you recommend, the optical or non-optical? Would you say the optical is better due to speed/durability? Are there any other differences? Thanks!
They're different keyboards for sure bc of their layout. I prefer my keychron over everything right now. Perfect price point for all the features I want
i was also deciding between these two! watched this video too late, i ordered the AOC after watching Switch and Click's review on AOC. which did you decide on?
Me too!! I asked them to send one over bc I was raving about the K8 before any of these giant keyboard channels even knew about it and got the cold shoulder :-(
1:55 well you can unsolder a switch and solder a new one, you don’t have to buy a new keyboard. Yes it’s less convenient, but it’s not a hard job to do, and even if you are absolutely afraid of soldering (it’s not that hard, people...) you can at least find someone to do it for you.
@@devanshkamdar8244 he said “You can’t switch it” and “You have to buy a whole new keyboard”. I don’t see how this could mean “You can switch your switches and you don’t have to buy a new keyboard”
Dumb question, The layout you have has the Prt Scr button The images on Amazon do not display that. Does it come with the key to swap? I constantly use Windows + Prt Scr for work and I want that option. Totally new to keyboards, excuse my ignorance.
Browns are generally quieter but still louder than your average dome keyboard. As for print screen, the k8 has one for sure since I use it all the time for youtube!
Hey I have a huge question, do you need a bluetooth 5.1 adapter on your computer to have the best connection to the keyboard?, any recomendation what dongle to use in the PC?, my motherboard does not come with bluetooth, like most of mobo.
@@Ahnestly I got a small dungle at the back of the pc, fails quite often :( cant find any good bluetooth 5.1 adapter, can u help me? maybe something pc16x for better connection
The best connection would be taking up a pci slot inside your pc. I haven’t had any experience with dongles. Sorry! I think I recommend one if you see my details
Any problem with the keyboard? I read some people have problem with the presses, like press F1 and presses all F keys. I really like this keyboard but Im choosing between this + akko neon keybcaps vs the galaxy 75 bundle in amazon. If you any recommendation about this it would be great ps: sorry about my english
This is currently one of the keyboards Im looking at for my first mech kb. However, Ive seen some reviews that the height could be an issue? Im also not too comfortable with a handrest. Anyone could share their insights on this?
Is that a good thing or bad thing? I'd like to think I'm my own asian. I look up to dave2d, but wanted to go more in depth and I don't always think like him
Keychron is probably one of the worst mechanical keyboard manufactures. The quality control is horrible. The k3 is as sturdy as paper, and the keycaps are probably the worst in consistency. It's almost impossible to type on them(excluding c1 and c2 cause they actually listened to us for once) and they call their keyboards "ergonomic". They pack all these cool little features, but they execute them so poorly.
Still can't believe I got reported for hacking in Overwatch while using a WIRELESS keyboard!!!

Hey, can you please tell me the compatibility of this keyboard with the Linux OS?
Do you prefer it instead K2 V2? K2 V2 its similar and smaller
I haven't tried the k2 v2 but i have a glorious gmmk pro and realizing i hate that format. I'm good with a TKL
Does the K8 come with a Bluetooth receiver?
A while back I asked Keychron support and a keyboard TH-camr whether the top plate was aluminum with the aluminum frame option. They both told me the top plate is aluminum. You're saying the body is still all plastic and only the frames are aluminum? Great video btw, love the shots, looking forward to more videos from you.
this is probably because the Bluetooth in Keychron is version 5, while some other Bluetooth mechanical keyboards are still on Bluetooth 4.2
Is it a 5 pin or only a 3 pin hotswap pcb?
3 pin
Ok thank you for the clarification
cant find a good 90 degree adapter for my cable hahah I ended up purchasing a 90 degree connector
Lol yeah the 90 degree is tough!
@@Ahnestly The other day and dont know if it happens to you my keyboard was in mac mode and I didnt realize, I even downloaded a program to remap keys until I looked the side and was like, OH.
Lolol ouch
@@Ahnestly Wow that's amazing 140WPM :)
I lied. It looks like i'm at 118-120. And it is the ugliest typing you've ever seen.
Hey there, thank you for helping me out with my decision in choosing a keyboard. On a side note, may I know where to get the blue coloured keys? :)
@@Ahnestly that helps a ton thanks a lot! Yeah I don't like using wrist rests either if I can avoid it.
What Bluetooth adapter are you using?
The one off my motherboard. I have a wifi extension that came with it and it also extends bluetooth signal as well. Works perfectly!
BTW the usecase for android is DeX!
what screwdriver did you use to unscrew your aluminum bars? I just picked up this keyboard and none of my screwdrivers fit the side screws.
I believe it's called a torx screw. Recommend picking up an ifixit kit! One of the best invesmtnets i've ever made!
If you buy this through Amazon, do you know if you still get the benefits of buying it from the official site?
Like all the stuff in the box and the warranty?
Yup no difference!
@@Ahnestly brill! Thank you!
Got a hot swappable K2 a week ago and I love it. Had the K1 v4 before this but ended up selling this because the low profile switches are not suited for gaming (imo). Biggest con for me is indeed the placement of the usb outlet. The other cons can be fixed (to some extent).
mah boi chevyyy HAHAHAH
FINALLY someone who gets it!!!
Hmm this or the K2?
I personally have the k8 and would like to say that if you don’t need to travel with it & like how much spaced out the keys are then totally get the k8. I was personally going for the k2 but instead got the k8 and haven’t looked back at the k2 ever since.
@@domdomwom Haha I'm too used to laptop keyboard layouts that the spacing on the k8 feels weird and gives a less clean look to me haha.
How do you live without a del, print screen, and pg up and pg down keys!?!?!
@@Ahnestly Lol my laptop has all of those but the page up and down is combo with up down button. However I hardly use page up and down. And I'm quite sure the k2 has those buttons?
I just got the non hotswap version 2 days ago and I really like it
Go put holy pandas in it. You won’t regret it. I have two K6’s and two K2’s so couldn’t justify the K8.
Holy Pandas are hard to find - I have drop Pandas and Glorious Pandas and am satisfied!!
I don’t get that this has a switch for choosing Mac or Windows mode, making it easy to instantly switch, but no dual-labeled keycaps. It seems that they might as well make the switch a jumper that’s behind an access panel or something, because it seems to not have been designed for switching back and forth all the time.
Not sure how many people switch between mac and PC like that, but at least they provide keycaps for mac and windows!
@@Ahnestly Since working from home became the norm, I suspect a great deal of people switch twice a day.
Makes sense!!
Great video! Really helpful, I was looking for an affordable option with a decent layout and I think this is it. Just a few questions-
Do you need a wrist rest with this computer if you're typing for long periods of time?
Great review! Thanks!
Thank you!!
Is there a 60% for this and which do you think is better razer huntsman mini or this?
This. I'm using it right now and don't regret not getting a major brand's keyboard
2:55 will it affect the battery if i use usbc mode for a long time?
Hm the battery life is so solid I don’t think it’ll matter and you can easilyyyt open the case up and swap the battery if you need to in like 5 years
Do the hyperx see through key caps fit this keyboard?
If they're cherry mx style, then yes!
If I were to purchase either the Keychron optical browns or Gateron mechanical browns, which would you recommend, the optical or non-optical? Would you say the optical is better due to speed/durability? Are there any other differences? Thanks!
Non optical so you have switch options
Great video bro 😀
U also earned a sub ❤
Would u recommend this over the hyperx tkl alloy origins core?
They're different keyboards for sure bc of their layout. I prefer my keychron over everything right now. Perfect price point for all the features I want
i was also deciding between these two! watched this video too late, i ordered the AOC after watching Switch and Click's review on AOC.
which did you decide on?
I got my eyes on the k8 pro
Can the K8 RGB go to one certain color?
Yessir!
Dumb question,
The layout you have has the Prt Scr button
The images on Amazon do not display that.
Does it come with the key to swap?
I constantly use Windows + Prt Scr for work and I want that option.
Totally new to keyboards, excuse my ignorance.
Also, I want a quieter keyboard without the loud clicks.
Is the Gateron Brown quieter than the Hot Swap brown?
Browns are generally quieter but still louder than your average dome keyboard. As for print screen, the k8 has one for sure since I use it all the time for youtube!
Hey I have a huge question, do you need a bluetooth 5.1 adapter on your computer to have the best connection to the keyboard?, any recomendation what dongle to use in the PC?, my motherboard does not come with bluetooth, like most of mobo.
Highly recommend you get a bt 5.1 adaptor. I haven't used any but I'm sure any highly rated one on Amazon will do!!
@@Ahnestly I ended up getting a 100 usd wifi 6 bluetooth 5.1 card and can even play bloototh with controler from the other room haha
Any problem with the keyboard? I read some people have problem with the presses, like press F1 and presses all F keys. I really like this keyboard but Im choosing between this + akko neon keybcaps vs the galaxy 75 bundle in amazon. If you any recommendation about this it would be great
ps: sorry about my english
Only issue I have is the rgb gets reset when I switch devices. Other than that, flawless
@@Ahnestly On my K8, you can lock the RGB with RGB_BUTTON+FN+L
9:15 Just buy a Bluetooth adapter. I think that would fix it
That’s what I meant!
lets be honest , this one is considered a super budget keyboard , look at NK87 aluminum or MODE 80 lol
This wud legit be bomb if hyperx alloy core didn't exist
I was debating between Anne Pro or Keychron.. You made my choice easier
nvm you're a hanzo main. Gonna get ducky now.
Lol. Let's play some time!

This is currently one of the keyboards Im looking at for my first mech kb. However, Ive seen some reviews that the height could be an issue? Im also not too comfortable with a handrest. Anyone could share their insights on this?
Hm I’m totally fine with it and don’t use a wrist rest
I have the K8 and for me, it's a little too high. Planning to buy a cheap hand wrist.
compare this to the Glorious GMMK
I pre-ordered mine like 4 months ago. Nothing yet
@@Ahnestly oh I didn't mean the pro I meant the normal gmmk, the 2020 usb c version
I want the white one but all sold out :(
New sub
Thank you!!!
The shots are really dark and I can't see much. You might want to work on that, but it was a good video.
I think that might be your monitor? Seems plenty bright on my screens? I do have a darker background than most, so maybe that's why!
thats siiick
Another con: no software, hehe. And RGB lighting is not very bright.
Literally talking like dave2d
Is that a good thing or bad thing? I'd like to think I'm my own asian. I look up to dave2d, but wanted to go more in depth and I don't always think like him
@@Ahnestly not sure tbh, ig you both just talk similarly, good vid anyways.
Tell his ass to stop copying me. :D
lol its bluetooth there will be latency
Keychron is probably one of the worst mechanical keyboard manufactures. The quality control is horrible. The k3 is as sturdy as paper, and the keycaps are probably the worst in consistency. It's almost impossible to type on them(excluding c1 and c2 cause they actually listened to us for once) and they call their keyboards "ergonomic". They pack all these cool little features, but they execute them so poorly.
