Note: Mistake was made inside the video! Higher profile keycaps produce a bassier sound, not higher pitch. Cherry profile is so much higher pitch than SA.

6. Install O-rings. I've noticed that a lot of people bottom out their keys by not learning/feeling the actuation point of their switches and stopping when the switch actuates. If this is you, install O-rings for immediate "clack" dampening
7. Install a thin layer of sound absorbing foam in your keycaps, as there is almost always room for it (depends on the profile and the thickness of the keycap).
PS. higher profile keycaps don't have a higher-pitched sound, but usually lower and generally louder, as the larger space inside the keycap acts as a larger resonant box; similar to a violin vs an acoustic guitar: the guitar sounds "larger", louder and bassier.
@@SwitchandClickOfficial yeah, O-rings, especially when 2mm+, can make a different feel, but a thinner O-ring, 1mm or 1.5mm, isn't felt that much but helps with the noise quite a bit!

@@TheMythogenic I use kailh speed switch, which have a 1.1mm actuation. I found I was wasting a lot of travel as these switches are so light. I ended up putting 3 o-rings on each key, so now the keys bottom out just after the actuation point, so no more wasted time/energy. I really like how it feels now.

I’ve been binging these videos for a week or two and my first mechanical, an RK68 just came in today! I’ve already done the “inside foam” mod with just the packing foam and it helps so much! Later I’ll get some better foam but for now I’m absolutely loving it!
Coming from laptop keyboards it’s a huge change!

Did the placing foam mod because I for some reason just had neoprene just laying around my keyboard went from C L A N K to C L O N K. Thank you I love it:)
I cut little squares out of a silicon potholder and glued them into the recesses under my spacebar and now it has a really smooth landing. I also used a mixture of PTFE and silicon lubricant on my stabs. I wish there was hot swap components for Alps switches.

Great video. Just bought a wood case for my kbc poker1, added foam under the pcb, lubed with ptfe dry bike chain lube, abd threw on dsa keycaps. Oh and got rid of the o-rings/landing pads I used for years.
I lubed some switches on my keyboard that is not hot-swappable by pushing the switch stem to each side and brushing down the sides of the stem. Works pretty good! 👍
I did that when the cheap lube that i used kinda formed out on the bottom of the switch and the switch was pretty much dry

Great video. I actually have done all these mods on my 60% I wish this video existed when I was building mine.
Another trick if you don't mind dealing with such a sticky material is using rubber butyl from automotive sound applications especially if you have metal plates used in your keyboard chassis.
A tiny bit of it will absorb the vibrations going across those surfaces.
Biggest con is that it's super duper sticky and messy to work with. But you need very little and don't need to cover whole areas.
It works a lot better if you're running a full size board.

I have a drevogramr I've had for a few years. Thanks to this video I modded my stabs with grease, spray lubed the outemu black switches, and added a neoprene/cork material under the PCB. Turned a 35 dollar keyboard into something that feels premium. Thank you for the tips!

#6 Switch films. They help ALOT for cherry style switches.
I just lubed my first keyboard and I must admit it was
harder than I thought. Those switches are small and you have to be very
precise. It also took a lot longer than I thought it would. I lubed 87
switched in about 5 hours so it was not a small task (maybe I am just slow... :)) I am really happy
with the result though. My keyboard sounds great now! Cheers.
So I tested out a Corsair K65 Mini back when it came out. I loved it and linear switches are nice. Ended up selling out and staying out of stock locally (rather buy locally cause return policies) so I settled with a razer huntsman mini. Did a foam mod and it made it slightly better.
Finally today I got the last k65 mini at our PC store and snagged it up. Did a double foam mod and oh man does it feel better than oem

I’m jumping in the deep end lol, getting a GK64X board, Cherry mx red Switch with gpl 205 g0 lube & dielectric grease for stabilisers, dolch keycaps and foam to dampen it! Learnt this stuff in just about a day and a half, having a blast researching.

Cherries are kind of expensive for the quality. For a switch that's worth the money, go with Gateron Reds. They are only 14$ USD for 70 over on KBDfans. In my opinion, they are slightly worse than cherries, but for the money they are better. Most of the community thinks Gaterons are equal or even better, but I think they aren't. I think they're just better for the pricing.
Kahli Boxes are only a few dollars less/more on KBD Fans and are better imo. Then, if you want something that's 10x the quality, for only less than half the price, go with Gateron X KBD Fans Aliaz. However, those are silent ones, so you might be better off with Khali Pro Burgundy for only 21 Bucks USD.
I'm sure you already have everything you ordered though so in the future, just know that just because it's Cherry doesn't mean it's better. If Cherry was even 5 Dollars less per 70, they'd be better than Gateron; not even counting Gateron's INK, Tealios, and Zealios.
Everything I've recommended is Linear, like the Cherry Reds.
@@superkamiguru6856 yeah I probably should’ve, I have the cherry reds and I lubed them without breaking them in, they do feel rougher than just standard cherry reds but I don’t mind them for the time being, first mechanical keyboard so I just wanted a base to work with that’s reliable.

no way the first method actually fricking works but instead of a deskmat i used a large bedsheet and just put it on my table as a deskmat and it fricking works omg
My first mod was using Matias Alps silent stems in their clicky switches. Best tactile switches I've yet encountered, like if James Earl Jones was a switch. I also used vastly too much wet lube (Krytox) instead of the recommended dry lube (I later discovered), so the switches are inconsistent. (It currently needs repairs from an accident.) Still looking for switches as satisfying in the MX realm. I like SA ABS caps. Currently using a Glorious Gaming Master Race (or whatever) modular keyboard with Box Jades, and waiting on Holy Pandas from Drop.
@@SwitchandClickOfficial The Alps click is deeper than the MX, and the silent stem (with bumpers top and down stroke) prevents thocking and any upstroke noise/feeling. The cumulative effect is a fairly heavy keystroke, but distinct, very tactile, deep and fairly quiet.

@@MemesAndAds Sameeee, when I bought them 2 years ago, I didn't know anything about keyboards, so I just bought the most expensive, and the most "cool" looking keyboard, thinking that clicky sounds super good. Now I realize that I want a way quieter keyboard, and this keyboard is not the best.

Hi all, I recently got into mechanical keyboards. After watching a bunch of videos, spending hours on Reddit, trying out various switches at keyboard stores and now attempting to lube my keyboard, I’ve got a question - how do I find time to actually type on it? Has anyone faced a similar issue? Thanks
I desoldered my keyboard before, I will never put myself through that pain again. I'm definitely gonna stick with the less intrusive mods lol

ngl, I just want a keyboard that has a typing sound like I'm rattling a bag of bones. Unfortunately, there's no bone keyboards about. That being said, there's a few switches that get close.

The k552 Rgb has outemu blues that sound like that and the keyboard is hot-swappable and tkl.
It also cost 45$
Maybe try some franken switches?? Idk how much that's gonna do for you but maybe try it

I just learned of the Keychron keyboards yesterday....as my Corsair K95 Platinum keyboard started to fail. I just purchased the K10 keyboard with a different set of switches to see which one I like better. What a rabbit hole.
I really hope I will like the Keychron keyboard as much as I think I will.
I *just* got a set of SA caps for my Q1, and they are a real joy to type on. I use a wrist-rest when I am typing, or I raise my wrists off the table (like a good boy) and the caps are just wonderful to use.

Do you think filling the keyboard case with silicone(caulk) is a good idea, and will it be as effective as putting sound dampening foam?
The silicone have to be Neutral Cure one, otherwise it will damage the PCB.
@@SwitchandClickOfficial I did it on my ikbc c87, which was pretty hollow sounding.
I even put silicone between the pcb and the mounting plate.
It's definitely better, but there is still some ring to it.. I was wondering if the other methods would be better. :)
No, you are just filling space which does change the sound and how far it travels before it reflects, but not the same as sound dampening.

You have inspired me to take the plunge and go the custom keyboard route with a hot swap board. One requirement I have is a print screen button and the function keys, Does that mean I have to go TKL?
A lot of different keyboards come with software where you can costumize layers or reasign keys to different ones.

I use o rings on my keyboard with outemu blue switches, and it feels smoother, sounds quieter and is overall better, I suggest that anyone who's thinking of getting o rings, should definitely get them.

Hi, I know I'm late to the thocck party but here goes I modded a Old razer Black widow X Te, the old razer clicky green switches, Massive over lubed switches with G-Lube,Tape mod single layer, Filled the case totally with High density Foam thats close to memory foam feeling stuff. Now apart from a tiny click it is thocck tastic. Thank you for your inspiration to mod an old keybar instead of making more Ewaste and buying a new one.
i swapped some of the pbt keys in my mx brown keyboard with thinner abs caps from a cheaper keyboard and it feels better for some reason, less mushier and can feel it 'bottoming out' alot more clearly
i swear once you type with lubed tealio switches, you cant go back to mx reds. its like going from 144hz to 60.

Pff, i have a keyboard and when i press some keycaps it sounds like a spring noisy sound. Its called ping. The ping is from switches, not from under keyboard material or case bad structure. If i don’t have lube, the sound is reducing in time, or just stays like that? P.S.: i have Outemu Blue switches

It will probably stay like that. Lubing the springs a little should reduce it.
