in 5th grade when this came out my brother stayed up late playing and was like all sad the next morning. I was like why you soo grumpy? He’s like you’ll see. That fkd with my emotions XD
I would argue that Hojo is the real villian. He experimented with this alien’s cells. Used it to infuse his son with them. And kept the truth of his birth from him. Which led to him of course believing his mother is that same alien
The Sephiroth you see during Disc 1 in the OG FF7 isn’t the Real Sephiroth Think back, to earlier in the game, when we see President Shinra dead at his desk with a sword in his back. Remember leading up to it, there was a long blood trail, with the origin point being headless Jenova’s containment cell. If you had looked at the containment cell back then, Cloud makes an observation that it had been broken open from the inside. Without this detail, you’d assume Sephiroth broke her out, carried her body and killed Shinra on the way out (to be fair, I did too.) But something you’ll learn about Jenova, her cells are able to manipulate whatever body they are host to, both in control and in body form. Recall every time you meet Sephiroth, he leaves behind a piece of Jenova to a Boss Fight. After all this, if you haven’t guessed, what is actually going on with Sephiroth in Disc 1, is that it isn’t actually Sephiroth, but Jenova masquerading as Sephiroth. Everytime you encounter Sephiroth it’s actually Jenova, and she literally flings a piece of herself at you as a Boss Fight to escape. The real Sephiroth is as you saw, is the shirtless one in the chosen land whom Cloud gets mind controlled to give up the Black Materia to. So if you watched AC and got confused how Kadaj transformed into Sephiroth, this is why (he absorbed Jenova’s unaccounted for missing the head.) Everytime we see Sephiroth in the OG Game, its not actually him. It's either a hallucination or it is a piece of Jenova. The only time it's the "real" Sephiroth is during flashback scenes (like Nibelheim) or at the very end of the Game. It's not exactly fair to say that what we experience of Sephiroth from FF7 is how he really was because it's actually Jenova. Sephiroth had been at the Northern Crater since Cloud plopped him into the Lifestream during the Nibelheim Incident. His body was effectively screwed up, but his will clung on and he managed to hatch his scheme nonetheless, eventually manipulating his connection with Jenova via the Jenova cells in his body. Since Jenova was a shapeshifter, and her corpse was never 100% dead on a cellular level, Sephiroth was able to reshape the image of his mother's body into a copy of himself. Hence Jenova broke out of the containment tank and killed President Shinra, the Midgar Zolom, and so on. Everytime we encounter 'Sephiroth' during our chase we are really seeing Sephiroth working through Jenova. This is why we fight a form of Jenova whenever we encounter 'Sephiroth', and also why a piece of Jenova's corpse is left behind each time. With that, the body of Jenova, but the will of Sephiroth killed Aerith. Jenova killed Aerith. Jenova was using the guise of Sephiroth. Sephiroth isn’t awakened until you reach the North Cave. Jenova needed Sephiroth to use the Black Materia to summon Meteor, but she got it to him. She was responsible for everything else. Everytime we see Sephiroth in the OG game, its not actually him. It's either a hallucination or it is a piece of Jenova. The only time it's the "real" Sephiroth is during flashback scenes (ie Nibelheim). It's not exactly fair to say that what we experience of Sephiroth from FF7 is how he really was because it's actually Jenova. That said, the sole line attributed to Jenova herself is said by the entity during this same scene ("Because‚ you are a puppet", addressed to the mind-muddled Cloud), and the extent to which Sephiroth manipulated Jenova, or vice versa, is heavily debated amongst some fans. To some, Sephiroth has never really been free of Jenova's influence in the OG, even when he appears to be using his connection to his own advantage. I sometimes am in that camp myself, and I think one of the fascinating things about this game is that it can be open to interpretation.
Thanks for your thorough analysis. I have two questions for you, since I cannot wrap my head around these: 1) Why did Jenova suddenly awaken in Shinra building? Was it because it got exposed to some of its DNA when cloud stepped close to its containment chamber? 2) How did Jenova find the Masamune with which to slay President Shinra? After all, the fact that the Masamune was the murder weapon, and that Sephiroth is the only one who can wield it, is the only thing that convinces us and the party that the culprit is really him, and that he’s alive and well. Where did the Masamune come from? Was it kept somewhere in Hojo’s lab, for instance?
The explanation makes sense, but it sounds like Jenova's headless body somehow reanimated itself and used its psychic powers to make everyone think they were seeing Sephiroth rather than a headless alien corpse. The ReMake trilogy does something a little different, making every Sephiroth appearance him projecting himself through the Jenova inheritors (the cloaks).
Looking back on this gameplay wise, I feel that half of the video, specifically the 1st and 3rd Jenova battles weren't really visually engaging to watch. Just me spamming the same moves over and over till victory was achieved. Though it looks like I made more of an effort in the 4th battle to make it more visually entertaining. But hey, at least the music is fantastic.
thats just how old school RPG games worked. you had many options which allowed for multiple playthroughs but usually you just pick a build and stick with it.
This guy loves himself some enemy skill materia. One fun thing to try is reflect on your whole team, then cast a high level magic on all against your team. You’ll get it bounced back three times !

I’ve never played the original game, but ever since I saw the main menu screen. I kept thinking I’ve seen the floor in it before. It looks JUST like the floor the last time you fight Jenova in the original!! So one of two things is going to happen. One, they’re either lying about Rebirth ending at the Forgotten Capital, and it will actually end at the Northern Crater. Or two, when “that” scene happens, we won’t simply fight Jenova in the same spot. Maybe Jenova will make another illusion just like she did in Remake, and that we’ll actually fight her at the bottom of the Northern Crater.
I really wish there was a hard mode for this game. Not just excessive difficulty but mechanics that required strategy. Enemies having far more status effects, hitting a bit harder for the point of the game youre in and having more health. Even in my first playthrough as a kid it got to the point where i just roflstomped every boss save for ruby, emerald and Final Sephiroth.
The moment you grow KOTR enough to duplicate twice and grow mime twice so whole party has never ending KOTR and enemies can't even get time to fight back.
Cant wait to go to the gold saucer and grind out battle square for omnislash, if they even bother to do that in the remake. Hope they add chocobo breeding so i can get my good chocobo to get KotR materia too.
If I'm understanding your question correctly, if you want to get the flamethrower enemy skill you have to find the flying enemy, Ark Dragon, on the right side of the mithril caves and have him use the attack on you. Hopefully this answers your question. Apologies if it doesn't
The first Jenova battle takes place on the Shinra ship Cloud and crew sneak on that leaves Junon, which is shortly after going through the mithril caves. There's no Jenova battle in Midgar in the original game. I edited in the bit where Cloud first sees Jenova while in Midgar at the beginning cause I thought it'd be appropriate. I think that's where you might be confused
You can encounter and recruit Yuffie for the first time in any of the forests in the Junon area of the map. Though if I remember correctly, the encounter rate of fighting her there is lower than if you encounter her later in the game, like the forests surrounding the Temple of the Ancients for example

I love how this ominous aliens main method of attacking is a bitch slap!
Cloud: "We will defeat you!"
*Slap Slap
Jenova: "bitch please I've been eating planets long before yo' mama was a sperm"

Jenova LIFE battle is brilliant. They play Aeirth's theme, no victory fanfare, no victory animation. Shit's somber af

Girls: Do boys ever cry?
Boys:
I was so angry and crying that entire fight. I still get teary eyed when I fight that boss.
Even better in Rebirth! The actual Jenova theme taking over Aerith's and your hatred and anger building up with every phase is simply genius!
I'll never ever get over how the second encounter plays Aerith's theme throughout the entire battle... literally as every player is in tears
Yes, Jenova kills Aerith not Sephiroth.

Remember, the true antagonist of ff7 is a alien from outerspace not a divinity neither a god
It depends, considering Lovecraft's cosmic horror roots that are present in FF 7.
Remember, the true villain is also a sphere with tentacles

I love how from her design to her lore to her motives, you just don't know wtf is up with this strange *THING* from space.
Honestly using Omnislash on Jenova LIFE makes a lot of sense.
