    Apparently when the F-16A first came out, Dassault and France were extremely annoyed that it was getting so many sales in Europe compared to the F1. Yeah the Viper did flashy dogfight stuff, but it had no radar-guided missiles! So they went and designed the Mirage 2000 to match the Viper in WVR and continue to beat it in BVR. Then the AIM-120 and C-model happened, and suddenly the Viper was ACTUALLY a world-beating monster.
    So I guess what I'm saying is, I'd like to see what a Mirage F1 with full armament can do against a Viper rocking AIM-9L only in a BVR setup. 80s style. We're Dassault right, or just salty?

    • @Registered_Simp
      @Registered_Simp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In all likelihood, if the F-16 pilot stays defensive and in or close to the notch and allows the F.1 to close the gap for them, the match is still very much in favor of the F-16. Though the F.1 does have a chance if the F-16 decides to get a bit too aggressive prior to merge

      All of the "lightweight" fighters including the F-104, Mirage III, F-8 Crusader, Gnat, F-5, to F-16 suffered from having a nose that was too small for a powerful radar. For a long time, a larger diameter radar was a better radar and it wasn't until the mid-80s that there was enough signal processing power to make a smaller diameter radar that had decent performance. The Mirage F1's Cyrano radar wasn't spectacular and many customers elected to not buy the 530 missiles due to their weight and poor performance.

    The F-1C/E initially had an advantage over the F-16A. The former carried the Super 530 MRAAM, whereas the F-16 only had the AIM-9. Interestingly, there were two attempts to make the F-1 more competitive: the South African defense industry tested a "Super Mirage F-1" that was equipped with the RD-33 engine, and the French did something similar with an F-1 fitted with a M53 engine. Both programs ultimately failed to produce production orders.

    • @Sacto1654
      @Sacto1654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you mentioned the SNECMA M53 engine. Dassault developed the M53-engined F.1E specifically for the same European fighter contract that the F-16A won. It would have been interesting to see if the more powerful F.1E would have a chance against the F-16A.

For the last few years he has flow A4 Skyhawks against them, and he still wins most of the time, which I find hilarious. he said what he most looks forward to in the f1 is it's speed. He said he can just run away from a lot of planes. But at the same time, he said the French were poor designers with their cockpit and control designs, which he has to learn to use.

      @rogerpennel1798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prateekmahapatra1789 - What you need to keep in mind with any aircraft is that there are holes in their flight performance. They aren't perfectly balanced across the entire spectrum. Some don't do well at slow-speed maneuvers, some don't do well with high-speed maneuvers, some don't do well with high angles of attack, some have great initial climb rates but poor sustained climb rates, and some have great acceleration but poor top speed. So every pilot doing Dissimilar Air Combat Training is trying to force their enemy into playing to your strengths and their weaknesses. Having aircraft with dissimilar performances is a great learning tool to train new pilots because they don't know for certain what they might end up facing in combat so they have to be ready for anything and recognize when they are being lured into a fight that puts them at a disadvantage and how to leverage their aircraft's strengths to survive. The A-4 is a really good aircraft for simulation because it has very good low-speed performance.

    This fight also happened over the aegean seas in the 90's when the greeks still used F1's in intercepting turkish F-16s away from greek airspace. One dogfight actually ended in a roller to the deck (overseas) and the turkish F-16 didn't pull up in time. With the pilot ejecting and only a few injuries it didn't end in tragedy but a pretty interesting story.
    Also in round 1 the F1 pilot reminded me of a similar incident that happened on my island's shores where an F1 had an engine failure low over a city. He maneuvered it himself off ashore but when he tried to eject the system malfunctioned and he ended up in the sea sacrificing himself. He ended up close to the local airport,but cause he didnt wanna risk an emergency landing failing, and the plane crashing into houses nearby, he went for the sea.

      Very precise comment, Greek Mirage F1 vs Turkish F-16 had happened a lot of times over the Aegean from 1987 until 2003 one Greek pilot died soutn of island Agios Eustratios in 1992 he refused to disengage from the dogfight as the Turk was in his six and crashed in sea, the Turkish invader for a while didn't had the same fate.
      Mirage F1 was the best fighter over Aegean from 1975 untill 1987 it could very easily be on the six of Turkish F-4E and Greek Air Force used on Mirage F1 heat seeking missiles AIM-9 Sidewinder (not a word for French missiles).
      The Greeks after the appearance of Turkish F-16 made tactics in which could win under circumstances Turkish F-16 and they had a maneuver kill of a Turkish F-16 south of island Karpathos at 8/2/95
      All these untill 1990 when Greek F-16 Blk 30 appeared in companion with Greek Mirage 2000 and took the upper hand.

    Yes we do use the Mirage F1 as an aggressor to train our pilots. The Mirage F1 is flown by the contractor Draken. They also fly the L-159 which is pretty much the L-39 and they fly the A-4s as well. Here at Nellis our F16 pilots train to become essentially what everyone knows as a "Fighter Pilot" hence Nellis being refered to as "the place where fighter pilots are born". Our pilots will go off and become mission commanders, have the opportunity to become IPs themselves here, along with many other opportunities.
    Great video GS.

    The F1 is an interesting jet because with most 4th gen fighters onwards you can get away with mediocre fighting geometry, as they are designed to be very forgiving with AoA. The F1 is not that way; it can be a good fighter if you manage your energy correctly and utilize the right tactics, but it is still a 3rd gen fighter and is not forgiving in AoA, engine management, and coordination. Using the vertical with the F1's acceleration to regain altitude, employment of high/low yoyo to your advantage, boom and zoom tactics suited for this type of fighter, and proper rudder usage at low speeds are going to be integral to the success in gun fights.

    In Spain, we had the F-1 and the F-18 before the Mirages squadrons transitioned to the Eurofighter. Some F-18 pilots used to tell that a well handled F-1 could put into troubles an F-18. Also it's true that our version (F-1M) was the most advance F-1 ever existed, with great ECM and electronics upgraded by national companies. If the develipers of the Mirage finaly brings the "M" variant would be great to see this match.

    I'm not sure what modules are available for DCS, but it's obvious the Mirage F1 is toast against pretty much any 4th gen fighter. I'd be curious how it would do against something closer to its technology level, like a MiG-23, a Viggen or an F-4E. The F-5 might also be an interesting match up in WVR.

    Crashing into a hospital might be a good idea. Dont have to travel far to find a doctor, beds are right there (all over the place). As for the Mirage's final resting place, I think it might have been a golf course. In which case, it killed 4 players and 4 caddies on the 12th. Does a crashed fighter jet count a GUR or a natural hazard?

    So, that 2nd and 3rd fight ending, both times the F1 looked like it had pushed "the cobra button." Out of curiosity, what needs to happen to the flight surfaces to make that happen? Like, is it technically ably to cobra but then departs flight, or is it a situation that you can't replicate unless control cables/ hydraulics are compromised? Anyone know?

    • @tipnoel
      @tipnoel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's an FLCS override switch in the M2000 that basically gives you full authority over the control surfaces. It's only supposed to be used in case you somehow manage to put the jet into a flat spin (it's labeled "Vrille", which is spin in French)
      I'm not familiar with the F1 at all, but I'd assume that even though it's not FBW, there would be some computer assistance to prevent you from departing controlled flight. And if that's the case, there's definitely an override switch, probably somewhere on the lower left of the cockpit forward of the throttle like in the M2K.
      (I'm french btw, sry in case my answer is a bit messy)

      Modern Fighter jets are typically designed to be dynamically unstable - that is they are not inherently stable aircraft, ie: it takes a flight control computer to control the plane - the pilot just tells the FCS where he wants to go, The FCS flies the plane. Hundreds of control inputs per second. Faster than a human can react.
      You kill the FCS with gunfire, or gimp enough of the control surfaces that the FCS can't handle adjusting for the natural lack of stability in the design... and the aircraft will depart.
      Since these planes are designed with a center of mass with a center of lift pretty much right on the center of mass, or even slightly forward of it - typically if the plane departs and is still carrying much in the way of airspeed, it has a tendency to pitch nose up violently in a stall, scrub airspeed, drop the nose back down to horizontal and then fall out of the sky like a leaf falling from a tree, usually with a rotational component about the yaw axis - the dreaded flat spin.
      Sudden and severe Damage to the hydraulic system in its entirety can cause a similar violent pitch up stall, since without any stabilizing input from the pilot or FCS even if both are intact - the aircraft will tend to pitch up violently. Usually the hydraulic systems have some redundancy, but the backups can get hit too.
      Occasionally, when the pilot bails out and takes a couple hundred pounds of pilot, seat, and gear with him - it changes the CG of the plane enough and it stabilizes and wanders off without a pilot till it crashes (that's probably what happened in the first fight) sometimes the opposite happens - the plane is a dead stick but still flying somewhat straight and level, the pilot bails out, the CG shifts aft and the plane violently departs, pitch up - and falls out of the sky in a flat spin.

      If I remember correctly, there have been interviews with F-16 and F-35 pilots. On those they say the F-35 wins. Don't compare what you see the F-35 do in DCS with reality. The F-35 in DCS is a reskinned F-15.

    The Aggressor aircraft used to train US pilots are the Israeli F-21 Kfir, not the Mirage.
    Similar aircraft, the Kfir is a knockoff of the Mirage.
    ATAC is a civilian contract company that flies them and the Hawker Hunters as Aggressor aircraft for missions supporting TOPGUN training and others.

Kfir's are basically Cheetah's, both of which are mirage 3 platforms and are actually much more capable or modernized compared to most F-1's. Though all (f1 and M3) have massive maintenance issues/hard to keep flying. Draken also has an F-1 fleet. Many more F-1's in the air as aggressors than Kfir/cheetah/mirage3s between the two main red-air companies.
