Shelby Lynne's father shot her mother in the driveway of the family home before turning the gun on himself - in the presence of 17-year-old Shelby and her younger sister in 1985 (Wikipedia.) Beyond heartbreaking. Easy to see how she identifies with the song.
I had to check out this video after watching the TV show "Army Wives" where Shelby Lynn appeared in an episode, playing a down-and-out singer who had walked away from a promising career (due to alcoholism, I think), Her character sang at the Hump Bar on the show but preferred to go back on the road to taking a regular gig singing there. I didn't know her music but was sure that she was a pro, so I looked her up and listened to some of her music. I like this performance of John Lennon's song "Mother" sung with such deep emotion. I grew up a Beatles fan from the first time they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, and then enjoyed their individual careers. It's wonderful to see their creativity interpreted by different artists.
Listen again knowing that Shelby’s mother was shot and killed by her father at their home when she and her sister were kids and in the house. Different spin from Lennon maybe but different singers can bring different things to a great song.
Sorry, not into it. I appreciate if this song speaks to you, but she doesn't get it. This song isn't about healing, it IS healing. She doesn't go near as far as Lennon did. I recommend you all listen to the original, by John Lennon if you like this version.
