"Growth Rings" Co-written by Jeremy Bout and recorded by Neil Peart of RUSH, one of the greatest drummers of all time, this short film honors the way in which music marks moments in our lives. Just as the life of a tree can be understood through it's growth rings, we can look at the milestones and eras of our lives and reminiscence of the songs and bands that resonated with us during those times.

This film is relevant in so many ways, in current events and in the truths it conveys, penned in Neil's inimitable style and delivered as eloquently as he ever did. We were fortunate to be able to experience his gifts, even moreso that he was willing to share them for so many years. And with such fortune, the vacuum left by his absence is that much deeper and emptier. I still find myself struggling, on occasion, to grasp a world without Neil Peart in it, but he lived a life so enriched that he will continue to inhabit it, in intangible ways, for many years to come.
To your memory, Mr. Peart. Thank you for everything.

Ironically, I had a 100 year old oak in my back yard, cut down just yesterday, the day this was released. It was sick and dying and dropping limbs...big limbs whose thickness were measured in feet, not inches. It's hard to count the rings on the stump, the chainsaws did their job really well. But it saw a lot in it's days and shaded the yard wonderfully. Lost my favorite tree and favorite drummer and philosopher within 6 months of each other, but I think everyone can say we've all lost a lot this year.

I think had he stayed with us, and no longer being able to play drums, that voice narration would have been an *excellent* twilight 2nd career for Neil. I can hear him narrating for PBS' American Masters, or other documentary-type things worthy of that terrific voice, and of course would have to appeal to his curiosity and intellect.
Then again l can hear him reading children's books, or books for the blind!
I just may give voice work another try, after losing interest years ago. Starting by volunteering to record books for the blind may be a good start. Maybe that is my elusive silver lining.

I've often thought about what Neil discusses at 6:49 and how many people haven't found "that singular focus... that thing you were created to do.". I count Neil as one of the blessed few that found his true calling, became a master at it, and was both talented and fortunate enough to have his art "speak to the world". And we are equally fortunate to have experienced his art...

Neil’s growth rings ceased at 67 but so many of us continue to grow and will be inspired not only by his music and lyrics, but by the example of how he lived his live for generations more.

Neil, you are part of all of my growth rings. Even though you are gone, you will continue having a place in those rings and I will grieve your loss and celebrate the gifts that you gave. Your writing, your lyrics and your music. RIP my brother

Neil lived such a full life and left such a body of work, in music, videos, and books, it's as if he's forever with us. Generations that have yet to be born will discover and become enamored of his work.

I remember an interview Neil did with Mark Goodman on Sirius (pre-XM merger) where Neil said he would like to narrate nature documentaries.

Hearing this solidifies why I love Rush’s music and why I miss Neil Peart. He had a unique voice, a gift with word craft, he was able to articulate an abstract idea and make it understandable for each to understand. Missing the professor today.
