  • Neil Peart would've turned 69 years old had he been alive today. Chad Smith takes a moment to reflect on his artistic genius and the legacy he left behind. A truly heartfelt tribute.

When legendary drummer Neil Peart and legendary teacher Freddie Gruber had an unexpected meeting at Drum Channel, their spontaneous conversation covered musicality, technique, orchestration, and much more. Watch these 2 masters... and learn from the best. Neil Peart's Masterclass equips you with creative concepts and applications to expand your musical vocabulary as he shares what he has learned in the areas of composition and articulation 👉 drmch.nl/37Ukaor
    ---
Neil Peart was a Canadian-American musician and author, best known as the drummer and primary lyricist for the rock band Rush. Peart has received numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honored. He is known for his technical proficiency and creative ability to compose behind the drum set.
    ---
Drum Channel founder Don Lombardi comments: Neil Peart's loss was devastating on two levels. First, of course, to the entire drumming community. As Jimmy Chamberlin recently commented, “A piece of Neil lives in nearly every contemporary drum part in rock- whether people realize it or not.”⠀

Secondly, on a personal level. Before every tour, Neil would block out a Drum Channel studio for a full month to practice before Rush rehearsals even started. One big lesson I definitely learned from Neil is always be prepared.⠀

While he was at DC we would have lunch every day in my office and he would always want to know what other drummers might be coming in to visit or record. It was always amazing to me that he was just as excited to meet his drumming idols as they were to meet him.⠀

There are so many great memories. I once bought a light at Restoration Hardware because I thought the wing screw design would be perfect for the Time Machine set- and Neil agreed.⠀

When he liked something he would just light up. If he thought something was not quite right, he would never say he didn’t like it. He would just say, “Let’s try something different.”⠀

Neil cared greatly about education for drummers and the importance of having a good private teacher. He almost quit drumming at one point but his teacher encouraged him to keep going.⠀

There is a lot that we can learn from Neil as a person and a drummer. We will do our best to continue our mission... as he wanted it. - Don Lombardi

That was it. I have never felt that way about the death of any other musician/ celebrity or what have you. But the driving force behind my OWN drumming had gone and it hit like a freight train. It still stings, y'know?

Beyond their musicianship, Rush are all very good human beings. They managed to skip the bad phase of being rock stars. Ed wasn't perfect, but at least he found and kept his sobriety, which in my mind forgives some of the low points.

I was 11 years old, in the summer of '80, and one of my friends plays Permanent Waves for me. Watershed moment. I immediately knew that this was the direction that I wanted to take my playing. The power. The complexities. The nuance. I had only been playing for a couple of years, at this point, so I was still very impressionable, but that was the day that I found my biggest influence.

I was born in Los Angeles and a teenager during the seventies. It was awesome being able to see so many bands and concerts during this time 70 - 80's. Of all the great bands that I was fortunate enough to see live, none put a mystical lifetime spell of wonder, amazement and sheer enjoyment on me like Rush. I have few regrets in life I've been super lucky, seen Rush many times over the years but not being in attendance August 15, 2015 at the Forum is without question my biggest Regret! I had no excuse besides the day to day doings of life which is No excuse. I really thought that they would chill and do some selective shows later down the road. This will forever haunt me ..... moral of the story as bands, athletes, teams, race car drivers whoever or whatever turns you FN ON don't wait go seem um learn from my mistake, you'll look back and be glad you went. Oh and Chad you friggin Rock!

That was just a delightful, thoughtful and genuinely moving reminiscence. I really appreciate your generosity with your time and the things you share. You mentioned classical music, and as it happens, I was at Leonard Bernstein's last rehearsal. We didn't know that that was what it was at the time, but I think about it a lot now. As you clearly express, this stuff is important. All the best!

Very sincere tribute by Will Ferrell. Neil peart was an amazing drummer and extremely innovative. He had those massive drum kits. He certainly was the opposite of simplicity like for instance another legendary drummer Charlie Watts who played a simple 4 piece set. Snare, mid tom, floor tom and bass drum. With just a high hat, crash, and ride. Neil pearts kit was like a huge machine that surrounded him. It contained up to 40 pieces. Im assuming that means every sound making device in his kit and not 40 drums. I always thought did he really use and need all of those dozens of toms, cymbals, bells kitchen sink, shower, cocktail room. Bathroom, gong, chimes, block, cowbells, etc. The answer is........of course.......Yes!!!!🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

That was great Chad wonderful stories.I played Bass first worked my way to Rush and like a switch turned on listening to Moving Pictures and that changed my Life. Have been playing drums ever since. Geddy got me there Neil convinced me. All drummers should as you say immerse themselves and absorb the infinite artistry that is Rush and then there are the Lyrics. On my ship the Racenante screaming through the galaxy, headed for the heart of Cygnus head long into mystery. Why would I remember all those words I guess he was a visual writer you could imagine yourself in those words. Bravo Drum Channel.

The funny thing is as I've matured as a Rush fan of more than 25 years, Neil's drumming is actually the thing I admire "the least" about him; it's his lyrics and the kind of person he was that has left the greatest impression on me. The empathetic concerns at the heart of his lyrics and the fact that he was always deeply aware of and connected to the wider world are things that have literally shaped my life and my worldview. I heard Nobody's Hero for the first time when I was a deeply impressionable teen and its impact on me was permanent. I think you could play that song to any English speaker in the world and they would be emotionally impacted by it.

When I was a young punk, in the 70's I was into Sabbath, Purple, all those bands that would become "Heavy Metal." anything but what would become Prog Rock. Rush at the time was waaay over my head as far as music appreciation. Back then I think in the late or maybe mid 70's Rush did a New Years Eve show at Maple Leaf Gardens (Toronto) every year. This year for Christmas presents my sister gave me & my brother tickets for the show. First I was blown away how three guys could make so much noise but for reasons unknown at the time what really got my attention was the drummer. I couldn't take my eyes off him. I had never seen a band before (not that I'd seen a lot of live music but I watched a lot of Don Kirshners, etc.) that I payed so much attention to the drummer. And I had no idea why at the time he just got all my attention when as you know it's usually the guitarist or singer that everyone watches. To make a long story short that show didn't really change my music taste but years later & now I certainly realized & appreciate that Neil Peart, in my opinion, was the greatest drummer ever. Another addition to that "hell of a" band. Thanks Neil.
