This is hilariously full circle. 10 years ago I bought my first Subaru. Was looking for mod videos and found you guys. Recently brought the Subaru out of storage to get to work bringing it back to what it was, this video came up to show me how to check for boost leaks on the cheap. You guys are making auto community history and have been since 08!
Back when I had my 92 Colt hatch with a self built 4G63t engine, I made a boost leak tester out of a spray paint (rattle can) cap and a 1/4" air chuck and did exactly what you guys did here. When you're broke, you learn how to get in touch with your inner McGuyver and make shit work. I set the regulator on my small compressor to 15 lbs and plugged in the air line and found that my vacuum tees were the problem. Man do I miss owning a turbo car. Thanks guys!
what they had trouble getting by their own pockets, now is the income of youtube, a lot easyer. And moog makes great music, and marty is more bald, which also increase the revenue
Man, I just saw this video now… such good old days Marty and moogs with their old content… simple, down to earth and a bit of cheeky banter… unlike the mainstream crap these days :(
Even though i live in the USA, most of the cars MCM works on aren't available to me, and i drive a naturally aspirated infiniti g35, i love watching every single video these guys make. Who cares if most of it doesn't apply to me, these guys make everything fun.
hey thanks for the tips, gona try this on my wrx top mounted intercooler as i think ive got boost leaks for sure. ALSO watched the front mount intercooler kit video 5stars GJ
But you can use the rest for something else. What is left over still has value. Cost of the silicon pipe for THIS project was significantly less than $14.99.
@sdutango Generally no...this pipe would be pressurized under normal situations. All your doing is adding "boost" without the extra noise of the engine running. This lets you hear where leaks are.
if you use tyre valve instead of compressor end, you can just go down to your local servo with a couple tools, put it on there and use their tyre inflator
I think it's safe to say that most car enthusiasts do. It's one of the cheaper every day gadgets/tools we own that makes it possible to enjoy the hobby.
@16GDSM Top Gear UK is amazing. Black200sxser is referring to Top Gear Australia (totally different program sharing the same format) which has not been received as well as networks had hoped in Australia.
Hi, I've just this video. I don't have a compressor, can i use a good spare tire, that i can set to 1 bar with a footpump air thing, and test the leaks with it? Cheers.
Sounds like more than a boost leak, a non-turbo lancer would be about that quick. Could be all sorts of issues, post up a video of it running. Bit hard to diagnose over the internet.
their little home made system would be superior to the bought one if it had a pressure gauge bolted into it and a ball valve between the plug and the air fitting. given those parts can be found cheap enough.
Actually, this boost leak tester is not that good. Best way to do this is to pressurzie the turbo intake. That will allow you to test the turbo too. Also, you can leave the intake charge pipes on. Then you listen for leaks. You will hear air escaping into the engine, but my method will allow you to test the entire system, including Throttlebody, gaskets, vacuum hoses etc.
can you guys make a vid of you running the car off the pre compressed air from the air compressor hahahah would be cool running 100psi / 8bar boots please do it
@kx125JLA There's no performance advantage though as it isn't actually doing anything. But if you want someone with no clue to think your car has a turbo, go ahead. :)
@black200sxser You kidding? Top Gear is epic shit, I do however think these guys should do 5 minute "quick tip" or whatever stuff WHILE Top Gear is on, No offense but even mighty mods needs to realize that Top Gear is just good viewing fun, nothing can replace.
great video, this is a much better alternative than buying a stupid anodized aluminum one from greddy/AEM for over $100, ha fuck that. thanks once again!
13 years later and still helpful. Thank you.
Seriously, I just got my first turbo car and I've been watching the guys for years.

I miss these old episodes.

Who would've known that i would be back on old MCM for pointers, been watching for 14 years + already damn
I think i watched in the day. Now i needed it to find out what is wrong with my cossy. Thanks guys for all the years of brilliant stuff
Did a search for boost leaks. Led me straight back to my fave MCM. Thanks guys. Should have known you would have this covered. Lesson learned.
Watching this in 2016, time sure flies when you are building a race car.
what they had trouble getting by their own pockets, now is the income of youtube, a lot easyer. And moog makes great music, and marty is more bald, which also increase the revenue
@Donald Ranski Experienced a full rebuild after a blown head gasket.

Thanks guys. Don't have a compressor but I've got a bike pump that'll work just fine. This was more helpful than the forums.
Yall come a long way brothers. one day when i crossover the water, im coming to visit you
mighty car mods always there to help me out
Here they are 14 years later, still helping me diagnose my car
Can you guys make an extended version of this showing how to find leaks in your boost/vac lines...
I love what you guys are doing!!!!
Holy sh*t, you guys actually made something useful not just super funny! ur vids rock! I dunno how you dont already have your own tv channel..
This video is now 10 years old!! (Woah)

lol this project will cost under $10 and the price tag for the silicon pipe is 14.99.
0:46 i love this show guys but come on lets be real
That $14.99 price was for a meter of the stuff.
They only sell it by the meter.
But you can use the rest for something else. What is left over still has value. Cost of the silicon pipe for THIS project was significantly less than $14.99.
Good one guys! Only thing I can suggest is using some soapy water to find leaks.
lol watching this just after turbos and temples 2, the og super turbo!
Nice audio match at 2:38.
I was hunting for your comment Neil. Thank you!
these guys have sure gone along way
Cheers did have a leak now running great.
I definently want to see more things like this.
@sdutango Generally no...this pipe would be pressurized under normal situations. All your doing is adding "boost" without the extra noise of the engine running. This lets you hear where leaks are.
You should in addition to the pressurizing of the pipes use soapy water on the joints. This will make finding your leaks much easier.
you guys need to get this show on MTV!!
does anyone agree???
Love how all these kind of videos just assume you own an air compressor
if you use tyre valve instead of compressor end, you can just go down to your local servo with a couple tools, put it on there and use their tyre inflator
I think it's safe to say that most car enthusiasts do. It's one of the cheaper every day gadgets/tools we own that makes it possible to enjoy the hobby.
Come on mate brothers sisters cousins dads boyfriend has one always!
for like $50 you can never have to pay to fill up your tires again
ever heard of a bike pump?
@16GDSM Top Gear UK is amazing. Black200sxser is referring to Top Gear Australia (totally different program sharing the same format) which has not been received as well as networks had hoped in Australia.
Cool, will try this on my 944 Turbo. Thanks!
Thinking about doing the same with my 940
...volvo lol
cool
good to know for when ever i buy a turbo car or install a turbo on a car.
My Eclipse GST had major boost leak. Luckily, it's a real easy fix if you know what you're doing.
good vid guys..keep up modified the legend EK10-superturbo-
Now I have a built boosted B18C5 in my EK Civic coupe and it spools much slower with the Turbonetics 60-1 so I have to look for boost leaks...
Great video guys
2:39 Hero 🔥, song name?
nice vid just one point
the pressure that it is tested at needs to be 30%to 50% higher than peek boost
like in all pressure testing
Love the content and humor!
@kx125JLA Yes and we've made a video on it. Check on our channel.
the rimes on that car are they the same as the ones that were on the car u worked on episode 1
on my car the intake's really hard to get to, would it work to just put a plug with a valve after the turbo and leave the intake attached?
Has anyone noticed that the number plate on the Nissan is the same one that's on supergramps
Ha! I'm wearing the same shirt as Marty, and it's a car-work shirt. Awesome.
so to stop boost leaks u just gotta tight things down real good and they will stop?
Wow haven't these boys done well!
nice little editing candy at 2:35 :)
nice idea, ill be trying this out!
i have a little question:
If you have a portable aircompressor (with tank) can you inject air into your carb and supercharge your engine with it?
Under $10... Guys its clear at 0:46 that JUST the silicone pipe costs $15, love the show just stop BSing about prices.
Hi,
I've just this video.
I don't have a compressor, can i use a good spare tire, that i can set to 1 bar with a footpump air thing, and test the leaks with it?
Cheers.
Don't u put it on turbo inlet and not unbolt rest ?
hey guy,how about twin turbo checking, can u show its..
nice love this show
Sounds like more than a boost leak, a non-turbo lancer would be about that quick. Could be all sorts of issues, post up a video of it running. Bit hard to diagnose over the internet.
PVC solvent probably a better choice.
what is this for? will it damage any parts if done wrong like using too high psi?
Did I miss exhaust part?
their little home made system would be superior to the bought one if it had a pressure gauge bolted into it and a ball valve between the plug and the air fitting. given those parts can be found cheap enough.

can i use a boost leak tester on a s/c car?
@kx125JLA There's no performance advantage though as it isn't actually doing anything. But if you want someone with no clue to think your car has a turbo, go ahead. :)
would this test wastegate leak ?
how about twin turbo,explaint please..tq
2:37 was i the only one who noticed what marty did?
ten bucks! wow man where do you shop??????? just the glue costs ten bucks.
should start a show called houseo's car mods
Holy fuck this was 10 years ago!
This is some og shit
$10! haha the silicon hose was $14! but i guess they go on how much they use
I am having a little trouble with your accent, did you say 48PSI? OH 1 bar. 14.8 psi
DIY they said,$10 they said, because we all have a preasurised air thing just lying around
oh yeah i didnt notice that
it now shows 18
12 now two years later...
You'd get about 2 kilometres until your fuel pump springs a leak on to your exhaust and your car catches fire.
i dont understand why this is flagged as spam?
I love turbos with an ego, I also love the fact I can make my own tooling :D
lmao why did i have a feeling u would say u should probably see a doctor.. lmao
because people do that when they dislike stuff.
you know they make pvc glue for those pvc fittings...
@black200sxser You kidding? Top Gear is epic shit, I do however think these guys should do 5 minute "quick tip" or whatever stuff WHILE Top Gear is on, No offense but even mighty mods needs to realize that Top Gear is just good viewing fun, nothing can replace.

this car looks familiar.
i probably have boost leaks, but my turbos big enough to be like "mwahaha i'll just make more!" of course i'm only running .5bar atm lol
Kuj Gaming "only 5 bar", good story, is that your N4S or your GTA "car" you're talking about?
