I am a native of Campo Felice and as a young boy I watched this race from our family home and terrace which began my obsession with race cars . I was actually there during this race I 5 and remember it all .

Io c'ero ed avevo diciotto anni. Ultima Targa Florio e ricordi vivi ancora oggi.

What's hard to imagine is that these races were conducted on open, active roadways with the locals using them at the same time as the race cars were zooming around---how fabulous that people had no issue with that back then. Today, we think we're soooo tolerant of this and that but there is NO WAY such activity would be conducted today. Someone, somewhere....would lodge a complaint and that would be the end of the race. Great that we live in today's "such tolerant world," isn't it? Good Laud.....

The Mille Miglia was conducted on open roads, because obviously the Italian authorities couldn't close a 1,000 mile course. The Targa Florio, however, the roads that were utilized the 45 mile course were open to the general public for practice days- but for the day of the actual race itself, those same roads the course utilized were closed to the general public just for that one day. But yes, those were crazy times.

The roads weren't closed during the first few days of practice but closed for qualifying and the race. Different times.

I just drove the entire route on 18 July 2013. Let me say that the road is in no condition for a sports car race today. It places it is still a beautiful winding drive and the scenery, of course, is second to none. A sports car, however, would have its suspension destroyed on those same roads today.

rjg917- So were we and watched from Campofelice sharing wine and panini with the locals. Still have the lap chart we kept with times written in the centre pages of Il Giornale di Sicilia. Where did you watch from? Over forty five years of spectating this was the best event I've ever been to. Even learnt 'Due biglietti andata e ritorno a Campofelice, per favore' as we were staying in Cefalu and used the train. Ferrari were based at the Hotel Artu there along with many smaller teams. Absolute magic.
