Nino Vaccarella - Targa Florio 1965

  • After winning the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, the former headmaster of a nearby school became the local hero of the Targa Florio race after winning in 1965, then repeating in 1971 and again in 1975, when it was no more a World Sportscar Championship event. He also drove the big V12-powered Ferrari 512S in a heroic yet ultimately losing effort in 1970, damaging the car in the final stages.
    Vaccarella participated in five World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 10 September 1961. He scored no championship points. He also participated in several non-Championship Formula One races.

    Thanks for sharing - great footage and interview. And a few lovely shots of the Midget of Hopkirk and hedges at 6.24 finished 11th overall apparently... molte grazie

    That 8-cyl. Porsche was the same car that ran at Sebring that year. Ran long races with 220-HP engine. Didn't look anything like the 909 Bergspyder which came later.

    Living there and knowing the roads like the back of your hand is a huge advantage. You'd know every nuance and little mid corner bump on the entire circuit. Add to the mix a good driver in a fast car and you're just about assured a victory, if you have good luck. LOL

      +505197 Brian Redman says it took 60 laps to learn the 21 km Nurburgring so how many laps would one need to learn a 74 km circuit? So, yes, a competent local driver must have had an enormous advantage at the Targo. Great to see an actual interview with NIno.
